There was an Model F a few days back , new in the box that went for $371. So I imagine this would go for a bit more, possibly.

It's a Lexmark right? I assume it's basically the same as a full size blue label but tenkeyless?

No, it's not a Lexmark. Yes, it's the same as a full-sized Model M, minus the tenkey.

Er, yes, it IS a Lexmark.

Made in USA in or after 1991 = Lexmark.
The changeover date was in 1991.

Oh hamburgers. I thought all blue labels were Lexmarks, wasn't sure this also applied to SSKs, so that's affirmative? Are all grays post-'91 inclusive Lexmarks as well?

Sorry if it's repetitive, I've read conflicting info so better safe than sorry.

I've got an SSK made in 1991. But I don't think it was made by Lexmark.

IBM Box and case labels made my Lexmark clearly indicate: "Manufactured for IBM by Lexmark"

Case in point:

1993 SSK Made by IBM: http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/9242/subcatid/0/id/175803

1993 SSK Made by Lexmark: http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/9242/subcatid/0/id/155790

No worries; if you search for this you'll find me making the same mistake about 2 years ago :)

Lexmark acquired IBM's US-based keyboard manufacturing business overall; that doesn't mean they actually changed anything immediately, but it was under their control as early as 1991, which does include some of the gray labels for sure.

1993 is the year when visible changes started appearing, along with new models.
Either way, I don't think it should matter. It's the same manufacturing process, plants, etc. Not sure why people get hung up about the manufacturer.

The products may be identical or almost identical. The manufacturer shouldn't be an issue if you intend to use the keyboard and are not worried about its re-sale value. However, if there was a high likelihood of selling the keyboard in the future, I'd take into account general perception of some apparently cosmetic things, e.g. IBM vs Lexmark; Grey label vs Blue label. These factors are important to people to whom I've sold Model Ms and, therefore, to me.

Ok this one is confusing me, it's blue label but the date is '90. Did he swap cases or something?

I just measured the SSK in front of me.

Width of SSK: 15 3/4 inches or 40.0 cm

Sorry I don't have a Leopold TKL.

Then, in 1996, IBM bought the division back from Lexmark. My Model M blue label was manufactured in Oct-96 by IBM, not Lexmark, in Greenock.

So if Lexmark took over in '91 and this board is '92, there's a good chance they haven't made any changes to it (ie. is this Lexmark made or Lexmark designed as well)?

I dunno. Is finding something you like, which is no longer produced, that has been sitting unused in new condition in a box for the past 20 years, awesome?!

My concern with buying a non-NIB is that you're buying a 15-20yo used keyboard. Granted the M is built like an AK-47, it's still a used 20yo piece of hardware. With a NIB, chances are that I would be using it for the rest of my life.

I've got "the knack", so that's not an issue. Also, I type with latex gloves on, so the germs should be a non-factor.

Although the SSK is NIB, it may have broken plastic rivets inside, in which case you may have to do a bolt mod to make it last for eternity.
