Title: The Username Thread
Post by: microsoft windows on Sat, 14 August 2010, 11:21:57
There's a lot of people here who have funny usernames. Where did they come from? What influenced your username? What does it mean?

Mine's obvious. I picked it because I like Windows.

So, what does your username mean?

I picked mine because it looks good in Verdana plastered all over peoples sigs and my pics.

Nah, I posted the reason earlier in this oldtimey thread. (http://geekhack.org/showpost.php?p=83344&postcount=24)

Agreed ^......MW gives you a lot of free advertising. Be sure to thank him if you haven't already. Kishy is getting gyped.

Mine has little to do with computer input devices.

Mine is the starting letters of my 3 names, seemed as good a way as any of coming up with a unique online username.
It's nothing to do with India, or Hungary (yes, it sounds Hungarian to Hungarians, apparently.)

Not more imaginative than that, I'm afraid.

Anyway... It is the least stupid of the three on-line names that I have used the most throughout the years. :-P

Mine comes from the mispronunciation of a Japanese word (about 7 years ago, long before I knew anything about the language).

Hara - Japanese martial art term, equivalent to the lower of the three dantian in Traditional Chinese medicine, a name for the "center of being".

How I got from Hara -> HaaTa, can't really remember exactly, but it didn't have any numbers, and was unique, so it stuck.

Mine was actually a suggestion from my Sweetie. Years ago, i wanted to join an IRC channel, but couldn't think of a good nickname, and we came up with "aubade" because it was a pretty sounding word.

An Aubade is a song sung at dawn, and so gradually, as i started moving onto places where i could use longer names, i simplified "Song sung at dawn" to "Morning Song", and the rest as they say, is history.

A didjeridoo / digeridoo  ( there are many spellings and they are all techically correct interestingly) is the world's oldest wind instrument.  You play it by circular breathing to keep the drone sound going for as long as you want.  I play them and used to make/sell them and instruct others on how to play and circular breathe.

What's in a name?

Today is my birthday - August 16 (same as Madonna). I am forever amazed at how deeply my personality reflects typical characteristics of the astrological sign I was born under; I am Leo to the third degree according to the Book of Birthdays, Sun in Leo and something else too.  One of my dearest friends in High School, who also shares the sign and a love of CS Lewis books, presented me with an original watercolor painting of a tiger under a tree as a graduation gift.  It also bore this dedication in calligraphy: Following the Lion- Always walk through life like the tiger you are-- "Never a tame lion..."  (I've not been known for being particularly quiet or reserved in general.)

Many of my early e-dentities were directly derived from that, "ftlion", usually as username and since I didn't trust leaving my real info everywhere, the name "advocatus leonibus" was usually used as the "real" info since it also shared my real initials as well as the flavor of my spirit as an outspoken individual and the nature of the King of Talking Beasts.  Occasionally this also was condensed into a username: LionsAdvocate, lionsadvocat or simply AdVoCat.

There came a significant shift when I started finding ways to hack my cell phone for the purpose of adding ringtones and games via "howard forums" and I adopted the e-moniker "voxleo" which was related to the Audiovox cell phone that I loved enough to buy eight of (due to failed experiments in the hacking of same as it had a notoriously fragile file system - but, thankfully, they were going for as little as 5 bucks on ebay) until the time when the Razr V3xx took its place.  I found the name to have a nice double layer to it and it is still one that I use but it tends to be sometimes confused with one "Vox_Leo" from Singapore who is somewhat well known via their blog.  So here was actually one of the first instances of the slight variation which I think is a little softer and smoother en francais si vous plait.

There may be a future iteration in that I have just learned that the Danish/Norweigan for "lion" is "love" (where the o has a line through it, but I don't know how to make the character on the keyboard- yet).  Very significant since my actual given name is Chinese: love + bright, pure, true, or clear, bell.

And now I am properly screwed if I should ever be investigated for anything since this is the first place that has tied all those identities together.  Damn you!

I've had pocky since i was like toddler, literally cuz it's so cute parents buy em for kids to eat. I think pocky is probably just as iconic as the hershey bar, hershey bar drums up thoughts of the good ol times and thats why it keeps on trucking on, just like pocky drums up good times of childhood and i guess gives ppl who watch anime a "i got to have that, to eat and interact so i can be in the anime" kind of feeling.

according to:
http://www.fileformat.info/tip/microsoft/enter_unicode.htm
Quote
Method 1: Universal
This method works regardless of any of your language settings, but is the most cumbersome to type.

Press and hold down the Alt key.
Press the + (plus) key on the numeric keypad.
Type the hexidecimal unicode value.
Release the Alt key.

can't test, no windows machine.

I lauched my VM just to test this.

Windows is weird and actually had a code to enter that is different from the hex value:

If you wan't to know how to find this out:

start > run > charmap

then either locate the charter of interest, or copy/paste one into the text field.

at the bottom it tells you the info you need:

U+00D8: Latin Capital Letter O with stroke (ripster's favourite)

Keystroke: Alt+0216

Almost all the basement-dwellers I've seen are creepy-looking 40 year old virgins!

I don't live in a basement. For a long time, I didn't even have a basement. I just keep my computers tucked away down there out of site from visitors.

Within 20 years, you're going to look back and think how great being 30 was, and how dumb you were for not realizing it. Make the most of it while you can.

Totoro is a legend! :)

My nickname comes mostly from playing Half-Life in multiplayer. Used to go by Saint before that. After a while, I adopted Half-Saint in most on-line forums. A friend of mine drew the avatar for me about 4 years ago.

Cheers

30 only sucks if you let it.  I don't.  I do more these days than I ever did, and I am probably in the best shape I have been in for years.  On top of all of that I have the perspective of those 30 years to make the most out of everything I do.  I stay active, have fun, drink, and **** a lot.  I do not sit on the couch and watch TV.  There's a world out there to enjoy.  Take some meds for the ass-burgers, get out of the house, and discover what's out there.  That's why I am only on GH during work hours.

For some reason, reading your post while listening to the background music in the Dental Office I work at (Taylor Swift-Love Story) got me really inspired.

I'm usually on here during work. Every once in a while I'll go on in the morning or evening, but that's about it. But of course, there's a lot of time for going on the forum at work.

Sorry.  I watched Eat, Pray, Love this past weekend with my GF, so I might have gotten a little emotional. That movie was emotional, 40+ women crap.

Thread derailment back to the original topic (by a newbie)!

My original internet name was dodokiller as a retort to a friend changing his AIM acct name to something random involving dodos every 8 days (i.e. freefallingdodo). I also appreciate the fallacy of claiming to actively kill dodos.

Later, when making a new World of Warcraft (a game which I sadly/happily no longer play) character, I wanted a name that reflected the theme of hunting dodos but had already used Dodohunter. I then recast the name of Al Gore's quixotic beast to serve my purposes: Manbeardodo.

The final evolution of my name arose when I joined a raiding guild whose members were incapable of reading Man-bear-dodo; many people thought my name was pronounced Man-beard-odo and the nickname Manbeardo was settled upon.

I like the name Manbeardo now because it reflects my reluctance to shave.

I debated correcting it but I decided not to since I figured she deserved credit for getting most of the sentence right :p

I think it all depends on how it's done. I would prefer someone pointing my mistakes rather than letting me think I have the right answer.

That said, it should be "s'il vous plaît."

My username is very simple, my first name and the site name. I will never forget my username even if I have not been here for a long long time. Password can always be reset, but we need to know the username.

I might have given an explanation earlier, but my name is just an old rip on Lisp. See this wikipedia article on Lisp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisp_%28programming_language%29#Symbolic_expressions).

By the way, most lisp code actually doesn't contain more than an average number of parentheses (and usually even less, if you count {} and the like as parentheses), they're just nested differently compared to most other languages.
