Mixing Metal (Zinc/Tin) and Plastic components?
« on: Sat, 11 March 2017, 14:19:38 »
Hello geekhack,

I registered because I have a question regarding custom keycaps material compatibility:

Does anyone have an experience with combining metal and plastic components in a molding process?

I'd love to create keycaps with a metallic base and a plastic resin on top and while I understand that it would most like have to be done in two steps (first the metallic base with stem, then the plastic resin over the metal), I am not sure how I can make both metal and plastic bond together. One option would be glue, but that is definitely my last resort since it seems tedious and could alter the look.

My prefered resin would have been polyester or FRP but I am unsure if they stick to metal when molding or if there is any steps that I have to take to ensure good results.

Thanks for your suggestions!
