I can maintain an standard/easy literary text for 5 minutes at 108 WPM apparently. I'd say that's actually a good estimate of my current average with Dvorak.
very impressive :-) . To reach such spead you must spend severals hours typing (straight hours) per day. Let me guess you are a writter :-)
Mine WPM is about 25 , God i really have a lot of practice to do judging from all the remarkable speeds you acheive guys:sad:In highschool, mine was 17 keystrokes per minute.
60-65 on copied text. 75-85 on memorized text. I have the bad habit of needing to look at the keyboard when I type, even though I don't actually need to see the letters.
Here are two typing games you might enjoy. It is like typing tests and drills, but you can do it offline.

Typing of the Dead

Note: you should go to Options and set the keyboard type to US after installing it.
i can do 300 wpm if the words dont have more than 3 letters...
those games dont seem very useful, as the hardest part i have with touch typing is the letters and numbers.
side note 1: i would love to switch to dorvak
side note 2: wheres ripsters wpm?
I use dvorak and can manage up to 130WPM with zero mistakes and a relatively easy passage. That being said, my accuracy is atrocious so I end up being around 100-100WPM on average.
Have you considered using some alternative layout? Even international QWERTY has special characters mapped on combinations with AltGr (which can be pressed with right thumb easily without moving whole palm from the home row).
130WPM is pretty impressive. What keyboard are you using? I recommend a keyboard with straight columns for accuracy, particularly the Kinesis Advantage. I was never terribly accurate either on regular keyboards, but on the Kinesis I can touch type with great accuracy, even when jumping 2-3 rows all the way to the number row.
Brings back memories as a kid back in middle school, where my teacher used to yell at me for not typing with home row. Although, she gave up realizing i was typing over 70wpm at 12 years old. I type with my entire left hand and can solo type at least 80 WPM without even using my right hand. I use my pointer, middle, and ring finger on my right for most of the keys on the right side and my pinkie for all the commands, legends, backspace, enter etc while my right thumb sit's around acting all dumb. It's weird too because i consider my self a touch typist while most would say otherwise due to me not using homerow.
I am around 65, I don't know how to break this, it looks like a bottleneck for me. :(
Around 120wpm, when I'm working for long period... 160wpm at sprint speed.
Hey while I'm here could one of the younger geekhack members tell me what a "finger roll" is? I've seen it mentioned here and elsewhere.... Didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for it...
What a waste of nice keyboards!Just because I can't type properly doesn't mean I can't type at all. And it's not a waste. At least to me it isn't...
Not at all. However, the inattentiveness from the ADHD combined with my extreme laziness makes it difficult for me to learn things that I have no interest in learning.
It's interesting that apparently none of you use http://speedtest.aoeu.nl/I haven't heard of it.
As the author of that one, it makes me wonder if you simply never heard of it, or if there's something wrong with it. Also, I'd love to hear your WPM or CPM scores with this test, in comparison to what you get with the other tests. It'll probably be a bit higher since I've only used very simple words and no punctuation.
The reason for creating yet another typing speed test, was to collect statistics in order to get percentile ranks. As you can tell from the histogram on the page, the curve isn't quite symmetrical.
By the way, my own highscore is 648 CPM (130 WPM).
I'm assuming you already have a great keyboard, so there's no room for any big improvement in that area... :)The same is true of Origami (as noted by Kunihiko Kasahara, for one). I read really super fast, so It's not a problem for me. If could read a whole line at a glance, then look down and type it all. This is how I used to type, though now I'm getting better at using all my fingers (the only reason for me to look down is to get my bearings, and make sure my fingers are in the right place, A big concern if you only use 6 fingers max to type.)
With typing tests, one thing that really helps is to read ahead. When you're typing the nth word, you should be reading the (n+1)th word or even the (n+2)th one. Apart from that, it's a matter of skill, and that can probably only be improved by years and years of practice.
hmm.. apparently I type faster with MX blacks than I do with MX Blues. 97wpm with blacks, and 75wpm with blues. these are the best of 3 tests.

Mine peaks at around 95wpm on TypeRacer, but a better average would probably be 85. I've realised I'm quite an inaccurate typist, however, and this has increased recently since I've been trying to get used to my new keyboard with Cherry MX Blues after using rubber domes all my life. But I'm having a much more comfortable typing experience these days and the errors will decrease as I get used to the switches.

The difference and increase in your performance has very little to do with the keyboard. You've improved primarily because you're actually practicing, and trying to type faster; in part to justify the purchase of your silly expensive mechanical keyboard.
We've all been there. Once the veil gets lifted, you'll realize it's a time sink hobby like any other. It's the rabbit hole as another member has put it.

I meant that the prevalence of inaccuracies in my typing has increased since I got it, which probably supports your point, but mainly it's just because of the different feel of the keyboard. Pretty sure my speed has remained the same during the switch (pun unintended).

I tried that "Ten Fast Fingers" website and find it odd it doesn't include either punctuation or numbers? Any one have any idea, why this would be the case? Letter's alone is not an indicator of how fast people type the languages.
This is weird. I don't really understand how my WPM isn't that different when I'm typing normally and when I'm trying to type really fast...

more mistakes. I have the same issue. Yeah, you're typing faster, but you misstep more.
If your accuracy is <95%, you're trying to type faster than your body is currently ready for. You want to go for that balance between speed and control.
10FF isn't accurate but it's fun and helps boost your ego :D
I'm at 136 WPM now.

I'm actually curious to know how fast people type using improper technique..Improper typing technique is not neccessarily bad, especially on QWERTY, because QWERTY is inefficient. People somehow "fix it" this way. (See Sean Wrona.)
You see a lot of people not typing with their pinky (So like 3 fingers and thumb) or funky things like index finger on the spacebar, etc, etc. It would be far more interesting to see how fast people can actually get like that.

They do if you're talking about formal typing lessons...I'm not saying people do not have the ability to type fast in whatever way works best for them..but going against the conventional "taught" method is quite interesting to see...
Another way to put it is...a technique that is something that can not really be taught or replicated..for example, Sean Wrona's technique I doubt you could teach that to someone else as there are no set rules in places...Maybe you could but would take so much longer than teaching them with the establish "proper" way.
i am in dilemma to use the most standard way to type or my most comfortable way. Both have their pros and cons.
78 wps? Good for you.

What's a reputable website to test one's WPM? Some websites such as 10fastfingers.com don't seem to provide a good real-world example of WPS since the user is only tested on words instead of entire sentences.

Ummm... If you type 78 words per second, you don't need any test, you're already approaching the Chuck Norris level.
Anyway, I recommend hi-games.net (http://hi-games.net/typing-test,300/) and keyhero.com (http://www.keyhero.com/).
Getting a decent fast WPM is not hard, getting the correct finger positioning is hard.
Getting a decent fast WPM is not hard, getting the correct finger positioning is hard.
There's no correct finger position, imo. Type whatever is the most comfortable position for you. For example, the word "intro" the 'correct' way would be to type the T and the R, would be the index finger. But since they are so close, it's faster to type the T with the index finger and the R with your middle finger.

btw, in 10fastfingers my record is 113 wpm (steelseries 6gv2 with mx blacks) and in typeracer, 106wpm.

Got much faster at 10fastfingers...without punctuation and stuff I guess I can type faster.

Burst speed of 163 on colemak for invented text, average speed of 120.
Burst speed of 136 on colemak for read text, average speed of 110.
My speed on qwerty and colemak is exactly the same for read text. I don't really read ahead
I'm getting slower because I have CTS in my left hand. I mostly use only my index finger in my right hand (one without CTS).

Everyone admiring Sifo for his mid/high-140. I'm more impressed by your ability to average that in typeracer, seems way harder to me. Very impressive.

Yeah my typing position is really weird. It's a gaming position rofl. My left hand rests on wasd ctrl and spacebar and use it for most of the board while my right index finger does iopklm keys

I think ur using left-thumb for space bar on gaming-habit.. it accounts for 10+ % of keys..
so by switching to right-thumb for that one key you can shift (at least as far as key distribution) up to 55% left hand and 45% right hand. that's more even than something like 60-65% on the left hand for many people.

it's different in many ways..
with type racer.. you can practice the same thing over again, so you can memorize and optimize transitions..
not as easily done on 10fast..
the reason people are usually faster on 10 fast, is because the words are shorter and no punctuations which had never been practiced.

I am surprised to see that you make 165 WPM with 95.7% Accuracy, you must type the backspace really really fast.
What happens to me is that when I realize there is a typo, I already type a few letters, then I have to push backspace to delete those letters, and it has to be exactly those letters. That slows me down a lot. Any trick for this?

More often than not I find myself deleting whole words with alt+backspace. It's usually faster for me to retype the whole thing correctly than it is for me to try to spam backspace the correct number of times and start over half-way through the word.
I don't type 165 WPM though. More like 110-115.

122 max on typeracer here, 110 max on 10FF. I type a lot faster on 10FF, but I get really stressed out because I lose control.
Broke 120 for the first time (back to qwerty on my 87U 55g)
I doubt I'll ever be in the top 90% but I'm ok with that. At work it's all about IDE shortcuts, ctrl space etc :) Still I enjoy a nice keyboard, even if I can't 100% touchtype.
All you guys in the top 90% do you type out everything properly or just go with the flow. Keeping my fingers one home-row and typing everything properly drastically drops my wpm. The whole proper thing kills me with no right pinky finger. I tend to hover and type using my properly working fingers, but i suppose i should slow way down and practice more.

One of the most hilarious things I have seen is the consistent trend for people to think that not typing with proper technique is something praiseworthy.
I type with a modified standard a Dvorak technique (using middle finger for 'p' ('r' in QWERTY)). I use the opposite hand for shift, and all that. When speed actually is made to matter more than just what a good level is and it becomes a sport, every optimization is important. That said, standard technique (and I) have still found no use for the right thumb.

I did the 10 fingers test while having a conversation with a customer at work and got 110. Anywhere from 130-150 under normal circumstances when concentrating. I'm thinking about learning colemak, but I'm waiting to hear back from IT about admin privledges to install the keyboard layout.

Your signature result, while now I know is false, seemed to be realistic. I guess not.

90WPM. I really wish my typing style wasn't so FUBAR. I really only use like 3-4 fingers. I tried using an ErgoDox and my form made it extremely difficult. I'm almost 30 now and it felt impossible to unlearn all the years of typing wrong.

It was a fluke to have hit that speed. The word sequence barely deviated from the home row. I don't think it in any way reflects my speed in the real world. I loaded up the old school version of The Typing of the Dead last night haha such a cheesy game, but quite challenging on harder difficulty! Definitely helps you identify any flaws in your technique.

Very nice either way, still proves you can sustain it on simpler texts.
Looking forward to trying ToTD when my laptop is fixed. :D

Cheers. I really want to get fast enough to be able to type what people are saying as fast as they say it. I guess that'd be in excess of 160wpm constantly. Might be a long shot, but the ToTD game is a good a place as any to practice :D
I have the same problem with my right pinky as well, it just doesn't want to cooperate. I still hit P with my ring finger.
I learned to touch type through this website - http://www.typingweb.com
Just keep at it for like a few weeks and it comes pretty naturally after that. In fact I should get back on there to sort out my right pinky finger.

Thank you for that link. So, I'm sooooo slow typing the way you are supposed to.....My first test was only 22 wpm keeping my fingers on home how. I have worked up to around 40 now over the last couple days. I think my pinkey will work ok for this, but I do have to slow way down to use it without screwing up too much. "?" really screw me up as well as pressing the left shift... Going back and doing corrections does not help on the typing test so you gotta get everything right on the first try.
90-100 WPM very low accuracy
any tips to break 100?
How do you guys type so fast on 10fastfingers and those racing sites?
I always misread part of a passage and type the wrong thing ... maybe I am slightly dyslexic :p

Reading is an important factor on those sites though. I read around 4 to 5 words ahead of what I'm typing at that particular moment.
Around 140 WPM. I can also type one or two words ahead but then I get alot more distracted when I make a mistake. Except for the fact that I feel forced to use backspace I'm also out of concentration in that case. That's why I prefer to read a little bit ahead, it works for me :)I seem makes sense. I tend to be in the 150 area, but one thing that helped me a lot was learning to use Ctrl+backspace to delete the entire word. I should try reading a bit more ahead, as I sometimes get bogged down trying to read the words. Nice tips. ;D

I haven't been able to beat 97 yet, I typically get 96 when I test.. so I am consistent at least. I'll have to try some of the tips here, though I generally get going and then think I'm going to break the board as I bottom out hard. I think I need some heavier switches. :)

Me neither that is amazing
I just got my best on typeracer 92
Just typed 160 on typeracer... aww yeah!Congratulations, not ashamed to say that that is almost double my speed :thumb:
Thanks Frenir! :)You're welcome :)

Hahaha, you noticed :DThanks Frenir! :)
30 WPM. Been at that for years ever since learning to type in high school. Now my mom on the other hand was 100+ WPM.
My answer is anecdotal—because I want to include a pitch for the Dvorak key layout, see.I am teaching myself Dvorak for the challenge. I've only been at it for 30 to 60 min a day for several days. ATM I can type at about 5 wpm. I can type 60 to 80 using QWERTY. I'm wondering if it's worth it for the effort to meet or surpass this. It would take months I would think.
= Ander's Typing Saga =
I learned to type in high school—on QWERTY, like everyone else. And yes, this was entirely pre-PC, so we're talking typewriters. (Dad gum, where'd I leave my walker...?)
My QWERTY speed never went much beyond 60–65 (which I remember reading back then was in the range "expected of a good secretary"). This, despite typing for hours each day on Bulletin Board Systems (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system), the hobbyist-based precursor of the Internet.
Then I found out about the Dvorak keyboard layout (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard). It make so much sense, I decided to try it. I added the Dvorak layout driver to my DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file (fun chatting with dinosaurs, ain't it?) so my PC (an XT-compatible 286 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PC_compatible), I think—ha!) was a I didn't move my keys around or relabel them; I just kept a small printout of the Dvorak layout next to my PC, and consulted it only when necessary. (I still chuckle when I see "dedicated" boards with Dvorak and other alternative layouts... The idea is not to look at your fingers!)
It took me two weeks to reach my QWERTY speed—and from the very start, Dvorak felt much more comfortable and natural.
It took me only a month or so to reach 100 WPM. I eventually leveled off at 110–115, where I am today.
It's so simple now to switch to Dvorak on virtually any computer. However, on the rare occasions where I must type something in QWERTY, I have no trouble doing it. It's just not nearly as fast or comfortable (surprise!).
I'm sure the other QWERTY alternatives are just as good, or even better. But if you type a lot, and speed and comfort are important to you, I heartily recommend you shed the ankle-weights that are QWERTY and switch to something easier. :?)
OK, thanks for your attention. You can go do something else now. Typingly, A.
Long time ago me too, mid 170's. I think that could be close to the human limit? Then I got old and had Parkinson's disease. Now reduced to hunt and peck. I picked up the name Typo before they knew it was not a laughing matter. I still code but I have had to drastically reduce my cost due to lack of speed ability. Amazingly I am still a good coder in multiple platforms it did not fry my brain yet. The issue of like 10WPM really sucks bad. Just kind of glad to be alive that's all. I do not need an income anymore but is just what I like to do. Due to my crazy low cost people are busting down my door lol. I am going to completely retire pretty soon though. I mean just using the internet is enough entertainment at this point. Okay sorry, too much information lol.
Wow, I've added about 10-15 wpm to my typing speed by simply dropping the legs supporting the board. I don't know why I always liked them raised, but I notice considerably less wrist strain and less mistakes with the board level.
I'd like to drop the height of the board at least another 6 inches, but with the current setup that is not possible.
I've seen rumors of people typing over 300+ WPM. Now THAT is crazy.

i don't believe this unless they're using some kind of shorthand like typing with a stenotype. the fastest typists in the world type around 200 wpm
My wpm is horrible. I've trained myself to touch type better and I've gone up a little but I still only average prob 60-70. Record is 82wpmThis is OK. My average is 60-70. 100 and more is only for the gifted.

Right now I average around 100-110 on Typeracer and 120-130 on 10ff. I am using Workman layout. It took around 3-4 years to reach this WPM on QWERTY, but I have now reached it in only a few months of typing on this layout.
Training every day helps too. If you spend only around 15 or 20 minutes just typing in Typeracer or whatever program you use, you can increase your speed. I gain around 10 wpm a week now. Believe it or not, 3 weeks ago, I couldn't even hit 100 wpm.
Sincerely,

Wow thats incredible!
WPM in 10FF just means is your ability to do the test - top 200 to 1000 most frequently used words in the english dictionary, alpha keys only, no numeric, no punctuation, no modifiers/toggles.
Improving at 10FF involves memorization, sight reading ability and muscle memory. Improvement in 10FF does not help me type faster in my job (paralegal). You will do better at 10FF by developing highly idiosyncratic technique for alpha keys only and you can see this on youtube by watching people do 200+ WPM. I saw a guy do 215 WPM using only index + middle finger + thumb on the left hand and index + middle finger on the right hand. I didn't think it was possible but it turns out it is. I saw another guy do 200 something WPM on a chiclet laptop keyboard and his technique was very unusual. It resembled chording, which I haven't seen anyone do on anything that isn't a steno.
On 10FF my peak WPM is 104 (average 95) over 228 tests (1 minute, top 200 words). In reality my typing speed is much slower than that and more variable depending on how unusual and/or unfamiliar the words and phrases are but its in the region of 50 to 75 WPM. I don't know anyone who can type at conversation speed (200ish WPM) who doesn't shorthand.

Typing slowly helps with that. If you are trying to type fast, you make a lot of mistakes. Increasing accuracy actually makes it so that your wpm goes up, because you are getting less words wrong.
My best record was 202wpm, and never reach that again somehow
You guys should try keybr.com, they watch on your mistake and give you the test that will slowly improve it through time, and it's really goood (except the typing competitive is really bad)
they have track on your improvement progress, that good for you to watch which key is faster through time and which is not.

I use typings.gg to measure my speed and practice. For tying tests i average around 90 but i type much slower when i'm writing something.
It makes sense. My speed has increased a little lately. I'm averaging like 76-78 or so now and I was at about 65 a week or two agoI use typings.gg to measure my speed and practice. For tying tests i average around 90 but i type much slower when i'm writing something.
The reason for that is because you need to take breaks to think about your writing. The human brain needs to compute things in processes, and switching between processes (for instance, each sentence you are writing), will take time to do. Also, it also takes time to think of something new; writing has a lot of this.
