Title: What is your WPM?
Post by: dewcorps on Thu, 17 November 2011, 20:11:21
I will start off, my average WPM is usually around 51, what is yours?

Here (http://hi-games.net/typing) is a typing test just in case.

There have been some other threads but there hasn't been one in awhile, so I'm sure this is fine.

Mine is about 82 average, of course it really depends on how difficult the text is. Generally my lowest is around 74 and if the text is real easy I can do around 95. These are texts from typeracer and keyhero. In the TypeFaster typing tutor on the "Common Words" exercise I get just above 100 pretty consistently, but it's both easy text and I've done it so many times that I know what comes next without even having to think about it.

I run about 65-85, but I'm slow compared with some here.

I remember there was a good compendium of them not too long ago where people posted typeracer (I think?) screenshots, and there was a list. I was about at the bottom.

Recently, I had to transcribe some audio in QWERTY, and I surprised myself as to how fast I could do it, but it was a lot less comfortable for me than Dvorak. I think I'm about the same speed in QWERTY, but I tire out faster.

Hmm, the flash won't load for me.

80-85. When I'm typing I feel like I can go faster but my fingers just can't keep up. Which sounds stupid but if only my hands were more coordinated!

Everytime Ive tried these tests my wife has to come in the room to see wtf is all the noise. (usually gaming with headphones)

Around 65-70 according to tests, but the combination of having to read off what I'm typing plus tests making me flustered slow me down on them. When I'm just typing thoughts straight from my head, I can easily go at least 20WPM faster.

For typing speedtest, I suggest this website

http://hi-games.net/typing

This website has nice option of replaying the whole test you've just done. It has 4 different test times.

If you are typing in Colemak/Dvorak rather than Qwerty, you can also set the layout to reflect your layout while typing as well as replaying.

Sean Wrona, World Typing Champion, is on top of all records
(http://www.upl.co/uploads/hiscore.jpg)

My hi-games.net profile (http://hi-games.net/profile/4314):
30sec: 84wpm
1min: 78wpm
2mins: 74wpm
5mins: 71wpm

These speeds are only the fastest speed. My average speed is around 65-66wpm.

I just did a typeracer. I hit 51. That's basically the speed I was at on my Model M, so I'm glad I'm back at it on my Cherry blues.

I recently learned how to touch type in September. On a site like this http://speedtest.10-fast-fingers.com/  with random easy words I get between 80-95 depending on how warmed up I am. (This is on a rubber dome or scissor switch keyboard). If I'm using a site like http://play.typeracer.com/ or http://app.typrx.com/ with passages, I'm usually around 70-85. Once there are numbers and symbols, I start slowing down. I'm sure once I'm typing on MX blues, my speed will increase. I'm hoping to consistently be around 100 by the end of the year.

My old QWERTY speed was on average between 110-120. I stopped playing typing games for a while and my speed dropped to around 105-110 average. Then I wanted to mix things up and so I learned Dvorak.

I made this decision a few months ago, and I'm up to 100-110 average (much higher with easier words as easy/common words are especially easy in Dvorak). Because of this advantage, I've broken my high speed records with Dvorak, but I'm still working to build up to my old average speed. I spent years getting to that high average, so I'm patient about it.

I would say I average 140~150 on 10fastfingers.
no way I could hit that on other typing test sites though with punctuations, numbers, and etc. probably 120~130 on those sites.
http://profile.10-fast-fingers.com/39/Lei%20Namkung

i find myself typing fastest with red switches.
when i went to do the test on my blue after using red for some time, i found myself reading the words faster than i was typing them lol

I'm usually around 80WPM on typeracer.  Much less if I'm drunk, but not much more if I'd had a lot of coffee.

Just got an 89wpm on the test posted by OP about astronauts. I think I could have gone faster but the year "1959" got me.

The second test put up by Tony, I got 97wpm.

I only did one minute tests and on typeracer I just got an 89 and an 85. So I guess my average is around the mid-80s. I can probably keep it up for a little while if I just have to read-type. I'm never in a position to keep typing for extended periods of time so not sure where I max out.

On another note anyone here have their own version of touch typing rather than the standard homerow stuff? Like my hands usually rest on:

~65 with normal typing ~84 was the max for me.  I don't count the test unless it's gets less than 5% error.  Speed is nice, but I like to retain some accuracy.

Average on typeracer is 109. English or German doesn't really make a difference for me. When working I never reach those speeds because coding isn't really represented by theses tests, so it's pratically useless :D

I will try some of these test sometime, but when typing up Technical specification documents, I go around 90-92 and that is average for long typing sessions, speed wise I average around 112ish, I can go faster but I end up making mistakes on this crappy rubber dome, cannot wait for WASD to get red switches then Ill go into BEAST MODE! lol

My average on Keyhero or Typeracer is around 115-120. Typing for a long time doesn't really affect my typing speed in any way, although my fingers do tend to get tired after an hour or two.

I for one never advocate these typing tests as "accurate" or even useful, i'm not a dictation person, no i use the computer to type out words that come from my head into the computer. And with that I do it nearly one to one, of course I could talk faster, but I'm happy with the way I can just "spew" out mind to type if i have to. I think someone linked one of those programs where it just gives you a wpm of how a "real" person types instead of looking at the screen and reverbing stuff doesn't actually measure your true speed, unless all you do is dictation.

I'd say I average between 92-95 words per minute. I topped out once around 98. Haven't broke triple digits yet, but I'm working on it.

I vary from the 50-65 WPM range. My typing style is odd and keys I don't use often sometimes mess me up. My maximum ever was somewhere in the 90s in high school.

I can maintain a standard/easy literary text for 5 minutes at 108 WPM apparently. I'd say that's actually a good estimate of my current average with Dvorak.

How can I increase my accuracy? I can obviously touch type pretty well, as seen in my last post, but I find myself fumbling and striking the wrong keys way too much. It's slowing me down.
Title: What is your WPM?

To improve accuracy you can try to type slower and achieve 98+% or even 100% accuracy. Then you slowly increase the speed.

I think the 5 minute test on hi-games is an accurate reflection of one's true average. So saying, I currently believe I average 100 wpm now (yes, I got a 100 wpm on the 5 minute test there).
hi-games(dot)net/typing-test,300/watch?u=4557

I also have an average of 111 wpm based on 48 tests I have taken so far on speedtest - ten - fingers site:
profile(dot)10-fast-fingers(dot)com/1476/Maestro
(Although my best score is only 123, which I've gotten multiple times. Ps: I attribute this 'low' high score, for me anyway, to my predisposition of favouring english sentences over non-sensical random words.)

I seem to average anywhere between 100-110 wpm on typeracer without race-selection and have even got as high as 131 wpm with race selection. (last ten races average, of course). My best race on typeracer was 161 wpm on a 2 line quote.

Also I don't seem to do too badly in the endurance tests, past a certain point, as can be seen with the 95 wpm I got on the 50 minutes (yes, that's right 50 minutes non-stop!) test on hi-games.
hi-games(dot)net/typing-test,3000/watch?u=4557

There you have it, those tests kind of show the whole story of me as a typist, but what they don't tell you is that I am also a very inaccurate and fumbling  and nervous typist (but I guess, who isn't while taking those texts?).
I am trying to bring these problems down to improve further. Also I feel this laptop keyboard on which I type is holding me back a lot from truly achieving my dream wpm of 150 (on average). I hope to save enough money to buy a mechanical keyboard one of these days.

(Ps: I placed the dots instead of providing the actual url's with .'s instead, cause the site was not letting me publish the actual urls.)

Title: What is your WPM?
Post by: dark_side on Tue, 22 November 2011, 07:56:30
Well, 161 wpm is my best race on typeracer, yes.
I actually have exceeded that a good couple of times while practicing with an offline typing software.
And yes, all those were done on a laptop keyboard (with very "small"  and close together laptop keys to boot).
But I'm sure there are more people who can achieve high scores on a laptop keyboard. I personally know a couple of guys who are much faster (on average) and use laptop keyboards. (Although neither of their keyboards are as small as mine, comparitively).

Anyways, I really hope to get my hand on a "real keyboard" soon. This laptop keyboard is really making me extremely error prone.

My WPM count has been around 50 since my High School days. It's never gotten higher, and I'm okay with that. I can go higher if I press myself but that leads to RSI.

Using Cherry Browns/Blues/Reds and Topre has almost totally wiped out my RSI. The ergonomics of light mechanical switches are pretty remarkable.

For semi-extended periods, I generally sit around 85-90. For minute-long bursts I sit a bit over 110. Not amazing, but certainly a fair enough speed. My bottleneck is more not having enough stuff to be able to type than not being able to type quick enough.

Same here, though I'm trying to break it. Also, I type much faster with memorized text or anything I come up with (like a paper, etc). Also, I do much better with copied text that is written in a similar style as my own.

Finally: are you my typing dopperganger? My numbers are pretty similar to yours as well.

According to the site, it says I hit in the 70 range (done twice, 1 minute test, 76 and 78). On speedtest (the one with the string of unconnected words, I get around 80-90s.)

But ultimately I don't think it really matters because I end up slowly typing anyway when I am actually typing my essays anyway :/

117 on the 2 minute test the OP linked (http://hi-games.net/typing-test/).  That's actually a kind of fun test because there are a lot of words I don't think I type very often.

Although, it would certainly be nice if there were two spaces after periods like I'm used to.  I had to backspace a bunch of times to fix that.

1. I type in Dvorak, and it's nice, though given that it's a little easier to switch, I recommend QWERTY people switch to Colemak. It's really just a good idea to switch from QWERTY.

I do 80+ on QWERTY (traditional and laptop keyboards), and 100+ on Dvorak (Kinesis Advantage) in typing tests, however I have to strain myself and try a few times to reach those scores. Not sure what my sustained WPM is when I work/type in a relaxed way, probably 30% less.

130WPM is pretty impressive. What keyboard are you using? I recommend a keyboard with straight columns for accuracy, particularly the Kinesis Advantage. I was never terribly accurate either on regular keyboards, but on the Kinesis I can touch type with great accuracy, even when jumping 2-3 rows all the way to the number row.

86 WPM last 10 races on Typeracer. Around 80 WPM over 782 races. I've never quit a race just because it's not going well, unlike 95% of the other players. I hate people doing that.

Have you considered using some alternative layout? Even international QWERTY has special characters mapped on combinations with AltGr (which can be pressed with right thumb easily without moving whole palm from the home row).

Well as you know (being a fellow Czech :-)) the number row is utilized as much as the other rows. AltGr combinations are not for me I think :-) I also did research on the matter of alternate layouts and conclusions is, that they are optimized for english. Dvorak would give me +1% speed if mastered compared to qwertz. With colemak the situation is similar. I dont think there is any better choice then qwertz :-( Nevermind Mrs. Matoušková (Matouskova) uses qwertz as well so I guess problem is not the layout :-)

I'm 72-80 wpm.  I think I move my fingers too much (my finger travel is too long) to be any faster.  I find that if I try to move my fingers very little I make more mistakes.  Do others find the same thing, or are you just as accurate if you move your fingers the minimum amount?

Depends... If typing with Polish characters it's around 75-85 wpm. If typing without them or typing English it's more like 90-95 wpm. That's with 99-100% accuracy.
I'm using normal QWERTY. When I first started to only touch type after moving to blank keyboard about 2 years ago I typed around 60 wpm without Polish characters. I can definitely see advantages of blank keyboard in touch typing training.

I just did the 10 fast fingers test with the random words and got 104, 93 and 101 with like 3 errors in each of those. I think the paragraph tests are better gauges of WPM, but that was the only test that wasn't blocked at my work =P

I have a PLU-ML87 with Blues. The keyboard looks interesting, but I don't think I particularly want to splurge $300 on a keyboard. I am just a poor student after all :P

17 ! (with huge efforts)

I turned to bépo about a month ago, and lack time to train.
Before, I was on dvorak for coding and writing (badly) in english, and was often switching to azerty (which I never really learnt) for writing in french. I've lost lot of time learning dvorak because I didn't know bépo exists. This last layout is the perfect one for me, it even gives direct access to important characters that are unavailable on azerty, like accented capitals or —.

I got a 209 wpm on typeracer using a cheap, low-quality compaq laptop keyboard.

Bottomline: I guess mechanical keyboards are just good for the comfort factor, speed you can get on any keyboard you are used to.

Low-profile switches can often improve your typing speed.  On the other hand they can also increase RSI pain and possibly the chances of developing RSI.

Longer... but that doesn't stop me from finding out whether my car can still do 130mph.

On the other hand I live on my computer not behind the wheel, so typing at ~120wpm when I need to bang something out is acceptable and cruising along at ~80wpm otherwise keeps me comfortable and able to keep on chugging.

I admire, your restrained and wise approach towards speed.
But I like to die in a "blaze of glory", be it on my vehicles or otherwise (keyboard).
But anyways, I think we're drifting from the topic of conversation though.
Like I acknowledged before, mechanical keyboards do have their charm, and the only reason, I don't have one is that they are not available in my country :(

136 with 0 errors was my best on 10fastfingers. I had to keep redoing it because "America" "don't" and "India" kept screwing me over and im not completely used to the HHKP2 Layout yet.

It's funny because i've taken this test in the past using my cherry mx clear board and could barely get 118-120. I remember sitting there for over an hour doing the test over and over because i used to average 120+ back in high school [you used to have to take GWAM tests to take certain computer courses]

Brings back memories as a kid back in middle school, where my teacher used to yell at me for not typing with home row. Although, she gave up realizing i was typing over 70wpm at 12 years old. I type with my entire left hand and can solo type at least 80 WPM without even using my right hand. I use my pointer, middle, and ring finger on my right for most of the keys on the right side and my pinkie for all the commands, legends, backspace, enter etc while my right thumb sit's around acting all dumb. It's weird too because i consider my self a touch typist while most would say otherwise due to me not using homerow.

I always thought the definition of touch typing was not having to look at the keyboard in order to type, irregardless of whether or not you use the home row.  Good job on your part though, I bet you could have probably typed faster than your teacher. :)

Touch typing is the no-looking bit... 'proper form' is that home-row nonsense.  As long as you are comfortable with how you type then you're all set.  For some people learning 'proper form' is part of what causes them pain.  If you let your body be your guide you have a much better chance on not screwing it up (your body that is).

When they decided a typing class would be mandatory at my HS they asked me to take the test so I could get credit and not needlessly take up a spot in the class.  I had already been taking programming classes when they did this.

Hey while I'm here could one of the younger geekhack members tell me what a "finger roll" is? I've seen it mentioned here and elsewhere....  Didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for it...

It comes down to balanced typing or rolling. Balanced typing refers to the typing you would find in a typewriter. Where the layout of the keyboard forces you to type consecutive letters with different hands (because they are in opposite sides of the board). Rolling typing refers to the opposite, where the layout allows "rolling" - where with one hand you can type a whole word. For example, in a QWERTY layout, if you type "are" you only use your left hand. And when you type the last two letters (i.e. "r"-"e") your hand does an outward roll movement.

Some people don't like this because a outward roll movement can reduce speed. I personally dont give a ****, I actually prefer rolling as it feels more natural. I'm not sure at all but I think that DVORAK has more rolls.

I was using typeracer.com for a while and i noticed a huge increase in  speed and accuracy. I think this is one of the reasons why I type as fast as I do now. If I didn't use that site I would probably still be typing like 30 or 40 wpm.

The other software that I used when I first was learning how to touch type was the Mavis Beacon Learn to type software. It was fairly cheap and got me use to using the home row and typing with the correct fingers. The software does have some games but nothing worth writing home about.

As the author of that one, it makes me wonder if you simply never heard of it, or if there's something wrong with it. Also, I'd love to hear your WPM or CPM scores with this test, in comparison to what you get with the other tests. It'll probably be a bit higher since I've only used very simple words and no punctuation.

The reason for creating yet another typing speed test, was to collect statistics in order to get percentile ranks. As you can tell from the histogram on the page, the curve isn't quite symmetrical.

By the way, my own highscore is 648 CPM (130 WPM).

I'm assuming you already have a great keyboard, so there's no room for any big improvement in that area... :)

With typing tests, one thing that really helps is to read ahead. When you're typing the nth word, you should be reading the (n+1)th word or even the (n+2)th one. Apart from that, it's a matter of skill, and that can probably only be improved by years and years of practice.

The same is true of Origami (as noted by Kunihiko Kasahara, for one). I read really super fast, so It's not a problem for me. If could read a whole line at a glance, then look down and type it all. This is how I used to type, though now I'm getting better at using all my fingers (the only reason for me to look down is to get my bearings, and make sure my fingers are in the right place, A big concern if you only use 6 fingers max to type.)

My only problem with "learning" is motivating myself if I'm not actually learning anything. This is not laziness, but a lack of it! Instead of wasting time not learning, I spent it reading and learning about new things in a similar field. I try to spend as much time as I can learning or sharing.

So basically, what matters to me is my peak typing speed since I only type when i know EXACTLY what i am going to type (unless i am copying somethign from paper to the computer).

One thing that typing tests have really improved is my style of typing and gettin everything right the first time.

Especially considering you don't use proper touch typing form (or it appears that way), and it looks like you have to move your hand a fair bit sometimes to activate the middle top row keys. I don't use proper technique, as I use my right hand for 'b' as well, and I never use the left shift key to type capital letters.

I think most of these test mean jack-sh... because if you guys are taking them over and over again, it becomes practiced.

So, essentially when you have a precog. awareness of what you're typing, it is no longer off the wall.

For example, Insy's been a member of typeracer for many years, but the Texts on the site has not changed, there are only about 30 different strings,

so he's essentially typing the same 30 lines of text over and over again.

Notice sean wrona's average sustained speed over an hour is only 150 or so, while he can burst 230 on practiced material such as typeracer

Which is why sustained speeds on NON-practiced text is the truer measure.

For example, using the 1 hour tests on Hi-games. but of course their library is limited as well.

True, but that also applies to each individual word too. Your muscles will know how to type certain words quicker simply because it's done it over and over. It's not exactly like you're reading each individual letter and typing them as they come up with any speedtest, unless it's a speedtest that just throws a whole bunch of random characters at you (which isn't really a reflection of speed, since you're not really required to type random strings of letters and numbers).

While I can't comment, since I only ever do maybe 10-15 races on typeracer every few months when I am bored enough to do so, I doubt that people will be able to memorise every single passage of text that is on there.

At the same time though, I understand that these aren't good measures of speed as they only last 30 seconds or so. I think it would be very tough for anyone to be able to keep up their average typing speed as recorded by typeracer for a period longer than a couple of minutes.

It's interesting that apparently none of you use http://speedtest.aoeu.nl/

As the author of that one, it makes me wonder if you simply never heard of it, or if there's something wrong with it. Also, I'd love to hear your WPM or CPM scores with this test, in comparison to what you get with the other tests. It'll probably be a bit higher since I've only used very simple words and no punctuation.

The reason for creating yet another typing speed test, was to collect statistics in order to get percentile ranks. As you can tell from the histogram on the page, the curve isn't quite symmetrical.

By the way, my own highscore is 648 CPM (130 WPM).

Just got same score as you on my second try.

Your score: 653 CPM (that is 131 WPM)

Nice little tool!  Not sure it captures "actual/realistic typing speed," because the words don't form sentences as humans normally type, but then again it is another interesting typing speed metric.  Pretty cool.

edit:  love the summary of typing mistakes, just noticed it.

edit2: typed on Das with browns, qwerty, no o-rings.

Mine peaks at around 95wpm on TypeRacer, but a better average would probably be 85. I've realised I'm quite an inaccurate typist, however, and this has increased recently since I've been trying to get used to my new keyboard with Cherry MX Blues after using rubber domes all my life. But I'm having a much more comfortable typing experience these days and the errors will decrease as I get used to the switches.

The difference and increase in your performance has very little to do with the keyboard. You've improved primarily because you're actually practicing, and trying to type faster; in part to justify the purchase of your silly expensive mechanical keyboard.

We've all been there. Once the veil gets lifted, you'll realize it's a time sink hobby like any other. It's the rabbit hole as another member has put it.

I meant that the prevalence of inaccuracies in my typing has increased since I got it, which probably supports your point, but mainly it's just because of the different feel of the keyboard. Pretty sure my speed has remained the same during the switch (pun unintended).

Around 120wpm sustained, but that's what I do for a living.

I haven''t used any of those sites everyone has mentioned.

I tried that "Ten Fast Fingers" website and find it odd it doesn't include either punctuation or numbers?  Any one have any idea, why this would be the case?  Letter's alone is not an indicator of how fast people type the languages.

Btw - has anyone considered creating a typing technique sub forum on here, given that it is all keyboard focused?

Do you think there would be interest for that type of thing?

Me too. I find that if I slow down a little and focus on accuracy rather than speed, I actually end up with a higher WPM. Mistakes slow you down more than whatever increase in speed you're getting from moving your fingers faster.

134wpm is my best so far. Tested on typrX (probably my most favorite out of the ones I've tried). I managed to get 127wpm on TypeRacer. This was with a crappy Dell rubber dome keyboard packaged with their desktops while I was at school. My speeds drop a bit because I rarely use my Filco Majestouch Black with Cherry MX Blues (and a JIS layout) because I'm not used to the feeling, but it feels great. I need to start learning DVORAK.

Improper typing technique is not neccessarily bad, especially on QWERTY, because QWERTY is inefficient. People somehow "fix it" this way. (See Sean Wrona.)

I don't know, really. On typing tests I'll get 45-70, but I get easily confused when I'm being told what to type.
When I'm just writing something, like this, I'll type a bit quicker once I get into it. I think I might make a few more mistakes on reds than on other switches due to the fact that they're so light and I'll often rest fingers on characters that come later in the word and accidentally press them. That doesn't happen all that much on browns and very rarely on blues. I also notice that I should probably train myself to type properly, although it's not that important since I don't do significant amounts of typing at the moment.

10FF isn't accurate but it's fun and helps boost your ego :D

48 :(

I don't feel so bad hitting 82.

For me, wpm isn't that massively critical.  I'm a Unix admin so my typing is in spurts and then I look at output.  Even for developing scripts, I'm stopping to go over what I've put in and making changes.

They do if you're talking about formal typing lessons...I'm not saying people do not have the ability to type fast in whatever way works best for them..but going against the conventional "taught" method is quite interesting to see...

Another way to put it is...a technique that is something that can not really be taught or replicated..for example, Sean Wrona's technique I doubt you could teach that to someone else as there are no set rules in places...Maybe you could but would take so much longer than teaching them with the establish "proper" way.

"The proper technique" is somewhat universal, and quite efficient with optimized layouts (Dvorak, Colemak). The thing with "improper" fingering (duh) is that some di-/trigraphs/words are more efficient that way.

I'm similar, except I type with an even weirder combination using my left pinky and right ring finger but I use my right index for space bar. It's because I keep my keyboard off center and have my mouse directly on top of my keyboard on the desk while the keyboard is in the tray.

Actually, here's me typing about 120 WPM that I posted here at the start of the year:

I'm getting between 80 and 90 with these tests. But my accuracy is atrocious (~90%).
Back before I got a job, I actually had my typing speed certified. They had some interesting rules. The primary rule being, anything less than 99% accuracy is not a valid speed. I'm no longer certain, but I seem to recall that backspacing wasn't allowed either. Finally, words were a set number of characters, not actual words. That way 'of' 'a' and other short words don't count a single word each. At the time, my certified speed was 69 wpm.

There is quite a bit of logic to this. The more errors you make, the more time you will need to spend re-writing the same section of text, whether it's immediately with the aid of backspace, or later on as an actual editing process.

I rarely type long paragraphs, and I definitely don't type from written text anymore. As a result my speed and my accuracy have both dropped over the last 6 years. I strongly doubt that the speeds being recorded by these tests follow the same rules.

Ultimately, if I'm composing something, such as an email, I only need to type as quickly as I can think, which is about my average speed anyway. I'd like to type faster, but it serves little benefit. I've recently discovered that slowing down and thinking my sentences through, enforced by handwriting speed, actually results in better language. If I type straight from my thoughts, I end up with a less flowing, less well written text.
Title: Re: What is your WPM?
Post by: Polymer on Thu, 06 December 2012, 07:17:44
That sounds like the type of test you had when you actually learned on a typewriter...

All your mistakes counted, you couldn't actually backspace because it wasn't possible....you counted actual words...

I think nowadays they all use some sort of formula (I think one site used 5 characters = 1 word) and of course backspacing is allowed...it isn't realistic if you can't correct a mistake (which slows you down of course).

It really doesn't matter how fast you type as long as it is fast enough to do what you need to do...

That said..I don't considering hen pecking and staring at the keyboard doing 20wpm to be "fast enough"...but anyone doing 45-60+ in whatever style they want is probably good enough for most...

Well, Sean sent me a message saying that may have been his fastest loss ever back when that happened, so, I really don't know what else to say other than proper technique is using all of your fingers to type, not only some of them.  As previously mentioned, this is not set in stone, but certainly neither of us are  typing "cats" with two fingers.

The only real "technique" for maximizing speed is reading ahead and unconsciously positioning your fingers/hands/arms/body in a way which affords maximum fluidity and efficiency relative to the upcoming content, as opposed to telling yourself you need necessarily press a certain key with a certain finger.

I average about 100wpm on typeracer lately.  My accuracy is horrible though, which slows me down quite a bit.  I don't type in the "correct" fashion - in fact, my left pinky I never even use while typing for some reason.  I think it's due to having surgery on it, and the nerve past the first knuckle is dead - so I can't feel my fingertip there.

When I happen to get "lucky" and get 100% accuracy, my rate goes up into the 120-130ish range.  I've become extremely fast at hitting backspace :)

Sustained typing in "brain dump" fashion usually results in a bit faster typing, probably around 110wpm over long periods of time.  The dictation slows me down quite a bit since I find myself "thinking" about where my fingers are.

Practice really does help.  A year ago, my speed was around 70-80wpm on typeracer.  I am also extremely keyboard dependent due to not touch typing.  I have to get used to a board layout before I can get anything near these speeds.  Sitting down at someones workstation to do some quick work usually is lot of frustration for me.

What's a reputable website to test one's WPM? Some websites such as 10fastfingers.com don't seem to provide a good real-world example of WPS since the user is only tested on words instead of entire sentences.

Ummm... If you type 78 words per second, you don't need any test, you're already approaching the Chuck Norris level.

I am just over 40 wpm. That sucks, but I have been typing with 2 fingers for the last 15 years. My problem is the I got used to 2 finger type because it was more natural when gaming. Also, I type in french most of the time and the accents are annying to type.

But since I got my first mechanical keyboad, I took the resolution to force myself to relearn to touch type.

I already went from 50 wpm with 2 finger, to 20-30 with touch type to around 40 now. Can't wait to see what it will be in a year.

I also never used a palm rest before, probably because I felt it was unnecessary while typing with 2 fingers. Now that I start to type with all my finges, I start to understand why people love them.

I will wait to see if I really need one for a few months. These wooden ones looks great :) ...

Did a bit more testing the other night and I seem to be a bit faster on the Ergo 4000 than on my Model M.  Probably because I've been using the MS ergo keyboards for so long both at work and home that I'm used to the shape.  It took me a bit to get up to speed on the M but I managed to peak both out at 88wpm.

I must admit, I really haven't tried to type for speed in at least 10 years as my job (Unix engineer/admin) doesn't really have a strong necessity of fast typing.  Even when doing some programming or scripting, I'm usually thinking through how I'm going to do things.

I'll have to wait on getting my MX red keyboard, though.  Surprise expenses popped up that I've got to take care of first.

For typing words that are on a screen and not thinking about what I'm going to write: 60-70 WPM consistently, sometimes 80, very rarely 90.

For thinking out what I'm going to say and typing it out, maybe 50 WPM just because I have to think about what I'm going to type. If I already thought about it, then I can match the above, but just barely.

(I'm also pretty even on my laptop keyboard compared to my Leopold...wonder why)

Getting a decent fast WPM is not hard, getting the correct finger positioning is hard.

There's no correct finger position, imo. Type whatever is the most comfortable position for you. For example, the word "intro" the 'correct' way would be to type the T and the R, would be the index finger. But since they are so close, it's faster to type the T with the index finger and the R with your middle finger.

btw, in 10fastfingers my record is 113 wpm (steelseries 6gv2 with mx blacks) and in typeracer, 106wpm.

well, there MAY be an "ideal" finger layout... but that would vary with language.

The standard "home row" technique is terribly out of date. asdfjkl   is silly...    awefjio;  is the best home row

If you want to take it a step further replace ; with "right shift",   this way you don't have to  turn your right wrist to type "left" hand capitals.. ;D

At typingtest.com, I can hit about 100-105 wpm on a good day...otherwise around 90-95. Which is the reason I can't get a blue switched keyboard for my cube.

If you want to take it a step further replace ; with "right shift",   this way you don't have to  turn your right wrist to type "left" hand capitals.. ;D

or i guess you could learn how to use your fingers / hands / wrists / body.

too slow.. and the more variance between motion, the more easily it can break rhythm

http://data.typeracer.com/pit/profile?user=precariousgray

not too slow.  like i said, learn to use your hands.

Anywhere from 60 to 80. Though that is my actual normal speed, not some high score on a webpage.

It may not seem very fast compared to some people here, but I think my typing speed is fairly fast, and fast enough for me.

My typing speed varies from 70-90. I seem to be in the bottom of the category here compared to ya'll typing freaks, but it gets the job done for me.  Though i wish to break the 100 some day, but in my 27 years of my life i still have yet to get there.

very impressive :-) . To reach such spead you must spend severals hours typing (straight hours) per day. Let me guess you are a writter :-)

I wish. I just love typing. Maybe some day I'll start a novel or a script, but I can't guarantee finishing anything.

Me too. I don't admit this outside of this forum. Everybody thinks I'm weird, even my fellow nerds. But to me, the sound of a nice key switch is just as musical as playing a piano. I go to a number of typing sites after working all day on my keyboard just to play music and relax. I even go to youtube just to listen to other keyboards that I like.  ;D

Burst speed of 163 on colemak for invented text, average speed of 120.
Burst speed of 136 on colemak for read text, average speed of 110.

My speed on qwerty and colemak is exactly the same for read text. I don't really read ahead

I'm getting slower because I have CTS in my left hand. I mostly use only my index finger in my right hand (one without CTS).

Hold on, typing with one finger is slow. Are this words per minute or characters per minute you posted?  :-)

Hey, are you able to switch between qwerty and colemak on the same keyboard and still achieve the same WPM ?
Or do you have different physical keyboards for each layout? I'm asking because I can type both dvorak and qwerty,
but not on the same keyboard, I find it confusing. Instead, I've associated dvorak with split/matrix keyboards (Kinesis Advantage, Ergodox, etc), and can only type QWERTY on normal flat keyboards and laptops.
So I'd like to learn about your experiences here.

45g actually hurts my left pinky from using the shift.

I'm also a big guy (six foot five) with freakish lanky hands, but there's something about the way the left shift really HITS the bottom on a 45g (I have a 55g realforce and it does NOT have this problem because of the cushioning effect from the 55g rubber dome.)

Typing on this scissor switch right now is actually less painful and I'm typing faster.

Now at home I will still be using my 55g Topre Realforce 87u.... it's amazing how much better 55g is (at least for little old me)

I think ur using left-thumb for space bar on gaming-habit..  it accounts for 10+ % of keys..

so by switching to right-thumb for that one key you can shift (at least as far as key distribution) up to 55% left hand and 45% right hand. that's more even than something like 60-65% on the left hand for many people.

it's different in many ways..

with type racer.. you can practice the same thing over again, so you can memorize and optimize transitions..

not as easily done on 10fast..

the reason people are usually faster on 10 fast, is because the words are shorter and no punctuations which had never been practiced.

Dvorak would definitely benefit with punctuation, because it's so much easier to reach (in the q/w/e positions for apostrophe, comma, and period respectively). Some people just aren't too good on it, maybe because it's a different type of word recognition.

Also left hand is preferable on Dvorak, because the left hand pretty much doesn't move. The right hand is better in QWERTY because the left hand is used more, so it balances load better.

I do not know why, but it went up a little in recent months. I can hit 90 on 10 fast fingers. Though this is not really my actual typing speed. I type comfortably with few mistakes at about 70-80 WPM. Though I can hit a "highscore" in those type websites of close to 100 apparently, but that is when I am really trying and I can only do that like one out of 10 tries.

Personally, I think anything above 60 WPM (one word per second) is reasonably fast.

Took the typing test and got 110.

Pros: Not a bunch of random text like 10fastfingers.

Cons: Make one mistake for a word, and all the following letters after are counted as error, causing lots of backspacing to fix a Single error.

I personally get about 125wpm through 10fastfingers.

I am surprised to see that you make 165 WPM with  95.7% Accuracy, you must type the backspace really really fast.

What happens to me is that when I realize there is a typo, I already type a few letters, then I have to push backspace to delete those letters, and it has to be exactly those letters. That slows me down a lot. Any trick for this?

More often than not I find myself deleting whole words with alt+backspace. It's usually faster for me to retype the whole thing correctly than it is for me to try to spam backspace the correct number of times and start over half-way through the word.

I don't type 165 WPM though. More like 110-115.

Ditto on deleting the entire word. If you're looking for speed, mapping backspace to caps lock helps as well. Unless you're one of those Unix noobs who likes caps lock for control (like myself xD)

Ctrl + A + backspace if you're on those kind of sites.

With typos: 80-90 WPM. With 100% accuracy: 110-113.

I don't really care about typing speed, but I do occasionally visit typeracer. If I try to type with super sonic speed, I just get a looooot of typos... i.e "waht, shoudl" etc... :<. I also get nervous for some reason when I feel like i'm typing really fast, so my hands starts to shake and I **** up, lol.

I would dispute that somewhat. My mind is more ingrained to naturally go for the backspace when I make an error, so just pressing control isn't too difficult. The only real issue that I have with using Ctrl+A is that you might actually be typing out a paper and it would delete everything, and you'd have to undo it; also, it requires a lot of wrist turning on a keyboard lower tier than the godly Ergodox.

I usually tend to hover at the 100 wpm mark, mainly due to my not being able to leave a mistake incorrect and I end up mashing backspace to fix it.

I've had severe eczema (mostly on my hands) since I was born.  My pinky and ring fingers always had cuts on them, so I rarely used them when typing.  I average around 100 WPM or higher, but I could probably increase my speed if I practiced using all my fingers.

I average about 85 wpm on typeracer and 10ff. When I took the 5 minute test on hi-games I got a right around 79 but I wasn't rushing and made a lot of mistakes. On typeracer I have seen my wpm at 120 but I always choke or make mistakes. If I had 100% accuracy I'm sure I could hit that kind of speed but for now my highest repeatable speed is 105.

I have had a blank HHKB for a week so I know that I can touch type without looking. The number row is still a little iffy so I will type a 7 instead of an 8 or something. I don't use any form of "correct" typing. As far as I can tell I use four fingers (index and middle on both hands). My hands fly all over the board but my left hand rests on Shift, A, W, D, Space (I used to play a lot of FPS games). My left thumb is used for space, left pinky for shift, and right ring finger for backspace (on the HHKB). My right thumb is never used for anything. I'm sure I could type faster if I learned proper technique but I don't have much desire to do that. I am pretty content with 80 sustained and 110 peaks using my strange style.

I'm in the same boat. I have hit 110 on typeracer but can barely get 90 on 10FF. I guess there are some short and easy sprints on typeracer that let me hit the higher speeds while its harder to keep that up on longer tests such as 10FF.

I get in the mid 80s pretty consistently.  I haven't improved for years.  I am much more accurate and have to "think" less when I'm just typing straight from my mind as opposed to dictation.  I thought getting blanks would help me learn how to touch type better (I STILL get the symbols wrong sometimes, even after a year) but it hasn't helped at all.  I'm probably going to give in and get some white printed keycaps for my HHKB at work.  At  home it doesn't matter as much and I rarely do anything but forums and IRC during those hours so **** the symbols :)  I think its strange that I haven't gotten used to symbols, but the arrow keys, and most of the function layer are second nature, and I find myself reaching for them even when I'm on other people's keyboards.  The worst is the backspace/del area, I'm ALWAYS hitting those wrong on other people's keyboards.  That and the caps lock/ctrl switch.  I do it even on my TKL boards and laptops so thats not an issue, but definitely using other people's machines its an issue.

Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't just forego alternate layouts altogether....but then massdrop is doing more ergodox so here I go again...

You guys are all very fast I'm no where near your speeds, probably around 50 average due to mistakes.  Of course I can type faster when it's something I'm thinking of rather than trying to nail every ",.; on typeracer.  Also my right pinky can't be used for typing it's either locked forward or back.  Never really thought about it until recently. I can do a grab/clenching motion fine, but I cannot stab at a key, I don't even use it to hit the enter key, I use my ring finger instead.

Anything I can do?  I'm not very accurate with my left pinky either but it does not lock forward or back as bad as my right hand.  My other 4 fingers are fine but compensating with them throws off my alignment.

If I type home row style I'm lucky to hit 30 wpm :(

I have the same problem with my right pinky as well, it just doesn't want to cooperate. I still hit P with my ring finger.

I learned to touch type through this website - http://www.typingweb.com

Just keep at it for like a few weeks and it comes pretty naturally after that. In fact I should get back on there to sort out my right pinky finger.

Just got even faster. Love this 87U!

110-125 /w reds.
115-130 /w browns/blues
110-125 /w blacks (hate using blacks though, winds me up).

I just can't seem to get much higher on reds, I always seem to be getting 110+ with about 5 typo's and a few words with errors and backspaces and what not.

Will hit that 150 mark with Reds one day though, I'm happy with this though, :).

I doubt I'll ever be in the top 90% but I'm ok with that.  At work it's all about IDE shortcuts, ctrl space etc :)  Still I enjoy a nice keyboard, even if I can't 100% touchtype.

All you guys in the top 90% do you type out everything properly or just go with the flow.  Keeping my fingers one home-row and typing everything properly drastically drops my wpm.  The whole proper thing kills me with no right pinky finger. I tend to hover and type using my properly working fingers, but i suppose i should slow way down and practice more.

How many WPM is the top 90%? I definitely don't type 'properly'. I can get 100-122 WPM on typeracer typing like this all the time: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/106134265/2014-03-10%2021.45.01.mp4

One of the most hilarious things I have seen is the consistent trend for people to think that not typing with proper technique is something praiseworthy.

I type with a modified standard a Dvorak technique (using middle finger for 'p' ('r' in QWERTY)). I use the opposite hand for shift, and all that. When speed actually is made to matter more than just what a good level is and it becomes a sport, every optimization is important. That said, standard technique (and I) have still found no use for the right thumb.

I was too lazy to read through this thread, but from reading just this post, you have no right pinky finger...? (Or a not properly functioning one?)

Never fear! I used to type slightly improperly - I hated using my right pinky finger (everything else was correct though; I still kept my fingers on the home row for the part) and could achieve 110+ wpm. I transitioned into typing almost completely correctly (still no opposite shifts.. I just use whichever I feel like using :p) and went up about 10-15 wpm, but am stuck right there currently :(

Slowing down and practicing is one method to do it, but I'm rather impatient and I like to just change one thing at a time so my speed doesn't go down too significantly but I can still try to improve. Perhaps try just a certain finger, set of fingers, or hands (or technique such as opposite shifts).

typing on my day 1 ergodox i did this:

Your speed was: 23wpm.

You made 7 mistakes, your mistakes are shown in bold text:

Mayday afternoon in Oxford Street, and Felix Freeland, a little late, on his way from Hampstead to his brother John's house in Porchester Gardens. Felix Freeland, author, wearing the very gray top hat of the season. A compromise, that like many other things in his liffe and works, between individually and the accepted view of things, aestheticicm and fashion, the critical snse and authority. After the meetung at John's, to disvuss the doings of the family of his brother Morton Freeland, and better known as Tod, he would perhaps look in on the caricatures at the English Gallery, and visit one duchess in Mayfair, concerning the George Richard Memorial.

-------------------------

what that website had me type for the test was friggin retarded.  I mean what the ****? how many commas was that?

I got 108 on the 10fastfingers test using my Model M. If I could be bothered I would try on MX Blacks - I'll do horribly for sure.

I could probably type faster if I ever used my pinkies when typing. Weird habit I picked up on when teaching myself to type over time.

It was a fluke to have hit that speed. The word sequence barely deviated from the home row. I don't think it in any way reflects my speed in the real world. I loaded up the old school version of The Typing of the Dead last night haha such a cheesy game, but quite challenging on harder difficulty! Definitely helps you identify any flaws in your technique.

Thank you for that link.  So, I'm sooooo slow typing the way you are supposed to.....My first test was only 22 wpm keeping my fingers on home how.  I have worked up to around 40 now over the last couple days.  I think my pinkey will work ok for this, but I do have to slow way down to use it without screwing up too much.  "?" really screw me up as well as pressing the left shift... Going back and doing corrections does not help on the typing test so you gotta get everything right on the first try.

I'm all over the place, really.  10 fingers speed tests are generally around 100 (last test: 110 on a model m), but anyone who thinks those are representative of real world typing speed is kidding themselves.  The highest I ever got is 122.  type race is usually quite a bit lower, because you have to do things like "type words that are more than four letters long," "capitalize stuff," and "occasionally type a piece of punctuation, a symbol, or a capital letter." Sometimes when I type I'm undoubtedly doing something like 120 wpm, but there are also times when I stumble or freeze a lot or just mess up.  I think the idea of a realistic, measurable typing speed is basically bunk for anyone but the very best typists. though perhaps people with something approaching proper typing form might be a little more consistent, whatever their speed might be.  I rarely use pinkies, my right hand tends to float, and I usually hit the space bar with my right index finger.  My wrists are often at strange angles.  And I have some slight nerve damage in my left hand that has some effect as well.

I seem makes sense. I tend to be in the 150 area, but one thing that helped me a lot was learning to use Ctrl+backspace to delete the entire word. I should try reading a bit more ahead, as I sometimes get bogged down trying to read the words. Nice tips.  ;D

It's not something I tried a dozen times either...  maybe two or three times, max.  I've never cared much for speed typing sites, until I found out a couple years ago that there was actually some tournament that had a decent cash prize (not great, but...)... so then I spent a decent amount of time on typeracer for a month or so but not much since then.  Doesn't look likely that anyone is going to do a speed typing competition w/ a decent prize any time soon...  well, not for keyboards anyway.  Being able to text rly fast on a smart phone is a lot more meaningful..   :thumb:

I parked my account on there at 222wpm in last 10 (heavy race selection, obv)...   Didn't do much race selection before that, so the 171 avg is pretty accurate.  I haven't been to hi-games (I think that's what it's called?) in a while, but I'm pretty sure I got something like a 180 on the 30 second typing test on my second or third try.

Pretty much at 60 now. Well, except when I'm winding down like now.

I started at a whopping 15.... Now, after 1, 1/2 years on a mech board. I'm nearly at 60 :p

I seem to be getting about 60wpm on the typing web test with bursts up to 70 about 98-99% accuracy on my best runs.  :( I don't think I will ever get a lot  faster as I seem to be hitting keys as fast as I am physically capable of.  Of course I could improve slightly if I make less mistakes. Although you don't have to delete the word and continue on it will stop until hit the next correct key which really seems to slow me down.  Soon as i come off home row I lost speed big time.

Been practicing for over a month... I seem to type a bit slower on this topre board than my brown board at home as well, but it sure if great to type on anyways.

I get a sustained like 95-105 and can hit 120/125 on good days on my blues. Something about that rhythmic clicking flow it's like spectacular. But I had no idea the CTRL-Backspace thing was a thing this might literally be changing my life. I used to be around 70-80 but with touch typing my speed went through the roof . Taught myself to touch type by buying a das ultimate with no labels which forced me to use muscle memory  :thumb:

Can anyone in the upper 100s advise no how one may be able to increase typing speed and decrease typos overall? I.e. what has honestly really worked for you. When the speed of your thoughts begins to match your typing speed writing is an incredible experience and I feel like I'm close but not really there yet.

My current max is 73.  That's as fast as I can go when everything comes together.  55-60 is what I can maintain comfortably.  I try for zero errors at any speed.  I'd love to be at 90 wpm but I feel like I've reached a peak.  I'm hoping it will come with time.

I suck on regular membrane keyboards.  I don't have to use them much but when I do it does literally feel, like I've seen other say, like typing on a wet towel.  Go back to a mechanical, any mechanical, and it feels rather effortless in comparison.

Around 140 WPM. I can also type one or two words ahead but then I get alot more distracted when I make a mistake. Except for the fact that I feel forced to use backspace I'm also out of concentration in that case. That's why I prefer to read a little bit ahead, it works for me :)
learning to use Ctrl+backspace to delete the entire word.

wow I had no idea this existed....

Me neither that is amazing

I just got my best on typeracer 92

Another helpful tip is to use ctrl + (left or right) to navigate through words and ctrl + shift + (left or right) to highlight words.  Sometimes there are certain words you want to keep in-between words you want to delete.  I haven't had to use my mouse much when typing up documents anymore.

Might as well also post a "10 fast finger" result here

This is kind of my typing style. Not really fast, but it is comfortable because I make few mistakes. I do type faster in Dutch than I do in English, simply because I spend more time doing that, it is how I started/ learned to type and my fingers and muscle memory are more familiar with the words.

Also, I have to admit, that if you add things like numbers, symbols and punctuation (for example, typeracer). My speed drops A LOT, with about 10 WPM. Though I maintain a high accuracy. I do not hit the wrong keys, I just slow down a lot.

I do not think I would ever type as fast as Sifo for example. I think that at least to an extent, it is an innate skill. My sister spends way less time behind the computer than I. Yet she types at >100 WPM on her laptop's chiclet keyboard, while I type only about 70-80 on my fancy pants keyboards. We both use a traditional normal style of touch typing with barely any difference in the technique.

I'm also faster in Dutch than English even though English should be a 'faster language' to type. Takes more time for me to process the words I'm typing, just get around 130 WPM with it.

My answer is anecdotal—because I want to include a pitch for the Dvorak key layout, see.

= Ander's Typing Saga =

I learned to type in high school—on QWERTY, like everyone else. And yes, this was entirely pre-PC, so we're talking typewriters. (Dad gum, where'd I leave my walker...?)

My QWERTY speed never went much beyond 60–65 (which I remember reading back then was in the range "expected of a good secretary"). This, despite typing for hours each day on Bulletin Board Systems (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system), the hobbyist-based precursor of the Internet.

Then I found out about the Dvorak keyboard layout (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard). It make so much sense, I decided to try it. I added the Dvorak layout driver to my DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file (fun chatting with dinosaurs, ain't it?) so my PC (an XT-compatible 286 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_PC_compatible), I think—ha!)  was a I didn't move my keys around or relabel them; I just kept a small printout of the Dvorak layout next to my PC, and consulted it only when necessary. (I still chuckle when I see "dedicated" boards with Dvorak and other alternative layouts... The idea is not to look at your fingers!)

It took me two weeks to reach my QWERTY speed—and from the very start, Dvorak felt much more comfortable and natural.

It took me only a month or so to reach 100 WPM. I eventually leveled off at 110–115, where I am today.

It's so simple now to switch to Dvorak on virtually any computer. However, on the rare occasions where I must type something in QWERTY, I have no trouble doing it. It's just not nearly as fast or comfortable (surprise!).

I'm sure the other QWERTY alternatives are just as good, or even better. But if you type a lot, and speed and comfort are important to you, I heartily recommend you shed the ankle-weights that are QWERTY and switch to something easier.  :?)

OK, thanks for your attention. You can go do something else now. Typingly, A.

I am teaching myself Dvorak for the challenge.  I've only been at it for 30 to 60 min a day for several days.  ATM I can type at about 5 wpm.  I can type 60 to 80 using QWERTY.  I'm wondering if it's worth it for the effort to meet or surpass this.  It would take months I would think.

I picked up the name Typo before they knew it was not a laughing matter. I still code but I have had to drastically reduce my cost due to lack of speed ability. Amazingly I am still a good coder in multiple platforms it did not fry my brain yet. The issue of like 10WPM really sucks bad. Just kind of glad to be alive that's all. I do not need an income anymore but is just what I like to do. Due to my crazy low cost people are busting down my door lol. I am going to completely retire pretty soon though. about 80 wpm. it was about 80 wpm in qwerty, and now it's about 80 wpm in colemak. to my surprise, the layout isn't my limiting factor. it's just the speed i feel comfortable moving my fingers up and down, which would be the same in any layout. but i continue to use colemak because i don't like my hands jumping around so much in qwerty. it's also the same speed whether i type on staggered or columnar keyboards

Wow, I've added about 10-15 wpm to my typing speed by simply dropping the legs supporting the board. I don't know why I always liked them raised, but I notice considerably less wrist strain and less mistakes with the board level.

I'd like to drop the height of the board at least another 6 inches, but with the current setup that is not possible.

Yup, it's definitely more ergonomic to type with a flatter board and It will reduce the strain on your fingers ... some extensive users even have negative tilt

positive tilt on a keyboard is bad unless you're in a situation where the desk is high and you can't do anything about it. writing desks, for example, are higher up

I currently avg around 50 to 60 on my iris, just not used to the layout enough to hit much higher consistently.

Only about 90-100...but my typing makes no sense so it's fine with me.

I've seen rumors of people typing over 300+ WPM. Now THAT is crazy.

i don't believe this unless they're using some kind of shorthand like typing with a stenotype. the fastest typists in the world type around 200 wpm

Yeah, it'd be difficult to break ~220 without stenography. Typeracer has some users that have broken that without stenography, but only on short texts.

I typically average somewhere between one hundred and one hundred and twenty words per minute.

My wpm is horrible. I've trained myself to touch type better and I've gone up a little but I still only average prob 60-70. Record is 82wpm

This is OK. My average is 60-70. 100 and more is only for the gifted.

my wpm is around 95-100 on my whitefox with hako violets, just built an iris though and with that my wpm took a huge hit, down to like 60 on average if I'm lucky.

Getting used to a new keeb is fun though.

Right now I average around 100-110 on Typeracer and 120-130 on 10ff. I am using Workman layout. It took around 3-4 years to reach this WPM on QWERTY, but I have now reached it in only a few months of typing on this layout.

Training every day helps too. If you spend only around 15 or 20 minutes just typing in Typeracer or whatever program you use, you can increase your speed. I gain around 10 wpm a week now. Believe it or not, 3 weeks ago, I couldn't even hit 100 wpm.

Sincerely,
treeleaf64

WPM in 10FF just means is your ability to do the test - top 200 to 1000 most frequently used words in the english dictionary, alpha keys only, no numeric, no punctuation, no modifiers/toggles.

Improving at 10FF involves memorization, sight reading ability and muscle memory. Improvement in 10FF does not help me type faster in my job (paralegal). You will do better at 10FF by developing highly idiosyncratic technique for alpha keys only and you can see this on youtube by watching people do 200+ WPM. I saw a guy do 215 WPM using only index + middle finger + thumb on the left hand and index + middle finger on the right hand. I didn't think it was possible but it turns out it is. I saw another guy do 200 something WPM on a chiclet laptop keyboard and his technique was very unusual. It resembled chording, which I haven't seen anyone do on anything that isn't a steno.

On 10FF my peak WPM is 104 (average 95) over 228 tests (1 minute, top 200 words).  In reality my typing speed is much slower than that and more variable depending on how unusual and/or unfamiliar the words and phrases are but its in the region of 50 to 75 WPM. I don't know anyone who can type at conversation speed (200ish WPM) who doesn't shorthand.

Typing slowly helps with that. If you are trying to type fast, you make a lot of mistakes. Increasing accuracy actually makes it so that your wpm goes up, because you are getting less words wrong.

My best record was 202wpm, and never reach that again somehow
You guys should try keybr.com, they watch on your mistake and give you the test that will slowly improve it through time, and it's really goood (except the typing competitive is really bad)
they have track on your improvement progress, that good for you to watch which key is faster through time and which is not.

my best on keybr.com is 141wpm
my best on 10FF is 202wpm and 10FF give you so simple words that you can always typing so fast with it.

Thank you for telling me about keybr.com. I usually use typeracer because it adds punctuation, but I will give keybr a try.

I use typings.gg to measure my speed and practice. For tying tests i average around 90 but i type much slower when i'm writing something.

The reason for that is because you need to take breaks to think about your writing. The human brain needs to compute things in processes, and switching between processes (for instance, each sentence you are writing), will take time to do. Also, it also takes time to think of something new; writing has a lot of this.

It makes sense. My speed has increased a little lately. I'm averaging like 76-78 or so now and I was at about 65 a week or two ago

Usually its because you cannot think as fast as you type, which is normal

I won my first typing competition
