I have always pronounced it "Tope-ray", but this guy at my work pronounces it "Topp-er"... Which one of us is right? Or are we both wrong?
I say "rubber dome"
I say "rubber dome"

toe-prahIn all seriousness, that's what I thought. But I'm not sure where I got it from.

Because when IRL are you going to be discussing keyboard switches?
Topper. It rhymes with Copper.
But seriously, it's pronounced "toe-prah" (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=9289.msg166824#msg166824) and rhymes with Oprah.

Like Oprah with a T.
OT: now I'm reminded of that Oprah bees gif. Lol.
Because when IRL are you going to be discussing keyboard switches?
Everyday? You don't talk about your hobbies with people?
No one I know understands why you would ever want a keyboard other than the one that comes free with your computer, so no.
I don't really know anyone that would be interested in talking about that with me.

Samesies. I never had to say Topre until Keycon, and it came out slow and awkward
Created by Japanese, so shouldn't we go by Japanese pronounciation? The pronunciation from my link was how the recording at the Topre Corporation said it. If it's good enough for the public recording, it's good enough for me.
Get them into it then. Talk more about it. That's also in the prophecy.

that's not so easy for most people
The closest I ever got to getting a friend into keyboards, was me helping him pick out one online, but he cancelled at the last minute, because he realized he was about to spend $110 on a keyboard
maybe it's people my age but no one sees the difference after trying boards and after me trying to tell people about them...
Japanese - To-pu-re (toe pooh ray)Sounds about right. (“Toe poo” doesn’t sounds so attractive though.)
東プレ is a three syllable word. Toe. Puh. Ray. :]
Toe-Preh!I say the same thing.
You guys forget what Topre stands for
Tokyo Press
If we go by Japanese pronunciation of that it sounds something like toe-prey
東プレ is a three syllable word. Toe. Puh. Ray. :]
東プレ is a three syllable word. Toe. Puh. Ray. :]
It gets shortened to TOE-PRAY because of how the Japanese language works. Kind of like how "desu" is usually pronounced "dess"

Let's get some actual audio recordings people. There was one in the old thread IIRC.

But the problem is, the usual English pronunciation is broken, because of English. That's why most native English speakers can't speak Czech or Japanese without a horrible accent.

Well, Canadians have center as "centre" with the same pronunciation, so I initally kind of read it as Toe-per in my own little world.
Most people that I've heard speak it (just online videos really), say it as you do.

Hi guys, Japanese guy from Tokyo here. I pronounce it,
Toh pu REH
or at least that's as close as I can get.
Well, there's no ray in Press, so the "correct" pronounciation of Topre should be toe-preh.There's no toe in Tōkyō.

Whenever I read Topre in my head I say toe purr.

One syllable.
No confusion :D
Topre noun [sur-kuhl - jurk]
Toe-Pruh
WOW! I just had one one of those wtf moments. I'm somewhat dyslexic and had been reading Topre as Torpe for years. This has blown my mind.

I pronounced it [to.pe`r] (X-SAMPA) but I didn't realize it was Japanese. Also, thats because its similar to how my name is pronounced: [zai.be`r]. However, knowing its Japanese doesn't help because neither <p> nor <pr> is valid in Japanese syllabary as far as I'm aware. So it must be from English or another language that's loaned in. You'll notice that プ is Katakana which is reserved generally for transliterating non-Japanese words, so that theory seems to hold up. That said, [to.prei] is probably the correct pronunciation. There's no I in PRESS.
