If I'm still living here and drive, I can probably pick up as many as one tall and two short people in the lower ontario area.

Wow, just realized I live less than 5 hours from Montreal! I want to go to carnival this year.

boiler and i are looking at a feb/march timeframe. venue will probably be at UIC again. next time i'm in town to visit boiler, his wife and the soon-to-be-new rugrat, we'll talk about possible other venues in case it looks like we're going to fill the one we used last time. otherwise, expect to find a place to stay close to campus.

Now, I must acquire a chauffeur to transport me to the obviously fine establishment where this convention will be held. Will the convention be held at the Ritz-Carlton Chicago? Or perhaps the Trump International would be better suited to cater to us?

Well, Chicago is an easy trip for me, but I dunno if you guys know what Chicago is like in Feb.?  Average temp is something like 24F, which is -4C.  Which is a "nice" day in Chicago in the winter.  But I'm not complaining.  I always wanted to get one of those black toes from frostbite.  I wonder if the really shatter if you hit them with a hammer?

While it's true that a really cold day is not pleasant at all, those are rare usually. The key is to wear good clothes and prioritize efficiency over the look! If you wear good clothes, it should be enjoyable. Also, if you don't have "real" winter clothes because you don't need them where you live, at least make sure to have an outer shell that stops the wind and then use layers of clothes depending on the actual weather to keep you hot. And wear boots and/or at least good socks.

OOOOooooooo I barely got to sled as a child, growing up in Kirkland. The snow didn't usually last long enough to ride down, or it would rain and get covered and ice and no one wanted to play in that crap.

given this discussion about snow, keycon west might be better placed during the winter so that midwest and east coasters can get out of their horrible snow-covered hovels and go somewhere nice for a change.

I think this is a good idea. We could have video conferencing between sites on big projectors so it would be like everyone is in the same room together.

Many trade shows and conferences are in "hot" spots in the winter (Miami, Las Vegas, etc) and "cold" locations on the summer (Chicago, Denver, etc)

Regardless of final location and time confirmation, I think GH and GH meet ups/Keycons are going to be evolving. Some behind-the-scenes long term planning for the continued growth, and making these possibly "more available" or perhaps forming "chapters". Food for thought.

given this discussion about snow, keycon west might be better placed during the winter so that midwest and east coasters can get out of their horrible snow-covered hovels and go somewhere nice for a change.

...might as well go all out and do Keycon Cancun.

Should build a 40 foot motor home outfitted with keyboard displays, and the Keycon Girls going from city to city.

Keycon USA so played out. 2015 Keycon international. Let's bring GHCSGO to dream hack

Yes! geniekid and I have the same idea :D.

Regardless of final location and time confirmation, I think GH and GH meet ups/Keycons are going to be evolving. Some behind-the-scenes long term planning for the continued growth, and making these possibly "more available" or perhaps forming "chapters". Food for thought.

I don't know. Outside of Keycons, it's hard to get other meetups going. Just look at how hard it is to get an East Coast/NYC meetup together. At the moment, it seems like there will be 5-6 people at the MechanicalKeyboards.com/Nashville meetup. I thought there would be more people interested in that.

I guess being the the SF bay area, there is a higher interest, more people, and higher geek factor. Even meet ups are pretty rad.

Knowing this info makes me not want to move from the area :)

I think it's more of the concentration of GHers there and good public transit. But there seems to be a general higher interest.

I was really trying hard to make it to that one, but I'm helping my brother move in that timeframe, and with the cost for me to get to Hoff's meetup, I can only afford to do that one for now.

Another fun fact: This site is called Wallethack for a reason.

What about those of us crazy bastards that enjoy the snow?  I actually ride my bike and do more grilling in the winter than the summer.  I also like to make and eat chili in the summer and eat way more ice cream in the winter as well.

There's much more high-fashion and hip clothing stores than you'd find at other midwestern malls, say, the Mall of America (which gets boring when you live close to it).  ;)

You guys should consider coming to Ottawa in the swing of winter.  Montreal is great and all, but we've got the worlds largest skating rink (7.8Km/4.85Miles), Winterlude is awesome for checking out sweet ice and snow sculptures and unleashing your inner child as you fly down ice slides and run through snow mazes, all while eating the tails of our national animal, the Beaver! (Note: Beaver Tails are a delicious pastry, not an actual part of the animal.)  And if you're into a little more adrenaline filled snow experience, some pretty good mountains are 20-40 minutes drive from downtown Ottawa for some good skiing/snowboarding.

....come to Ottawa! :D

There's been a bit of buying/seller at the last few meetups I've been to but it's not the main focus. Not that you couldn't do so but I haven't seen a lot of it. Mostly it's a meetup to play with keyboards and hang out :).

I can look into it, but it could easily be a few thousand dollars to get a hotel space...

I looked into hotel spaces in Indianapolis.  It wasn't more than a couple hundred for a whole day.  But Chicago is different story, I imagine.

Indianapolis is much cheaper in comparison to Chicago by far, but I would guess that the burbs would be a cheaper option as well.  I will try to attend but it will depend on the date chosen and work @.@

Next year is already looking like it will be busy.

Yea, don't have it in Indianapolis.  I just think that a space could be rented without having to drop thousands.  You could call some chain hotel off the interstate and they probably would be thrilled to have something in one of their conference rooms.  Not like they are a popular spot for conventions.

But free is always better.

Ok, here is the first link from Google when I typed in Chicago meeting space.  Plenty of options in downtown for less $500.  I am sure the farther out one and less glamorous one gets from the city center, the rates only get cheaper.  And more negotiable.

For the sake of costs, I would suggest having it out in the suburbs as well. There are dozens of places with rooms you could use.

I've done small meetings and conventions at this place (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/chinw-chicago-marriott-northwest/). Nice hotel, friendly staff, and located right off Interstate 90 about 30 minutes from O'Hare.

So long as I can get there without having to take a toll road, or a 2 hour detour to get around said toll road, it works for me.

Can we start nailing down at least a couple week window?

I want to start planning my meetup but don't want to get to close to the con for obvious reasons.

From Waterloo, you can pretty much take US 20 all the way until you're within 15 miles of the hotel I linked to. It then intersects another highway that will essentially take you right there. It should be fairly easy to use Google Maps and use the "avoid toll roads" option.

The one at the university, correct?  One advantage of that space is easy accessibility via public transport.  A location out in the burbs will not have that advantage.

With all this planning around college spring breaks, if you do it anytime mid-April or later, then you avoid those breaks.  But then we have finals prep.  Then college students should be free by mid to late May in this part of the States.  We mostly work on the semester system in these parts, not that pesky quarter system the west coasties seem to love.

Check out the archived events subforums for Keycon 2013 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=150.0) and Keycon 2014 (organization (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=167.0), live-posting (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=169.0), media (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=168.0)).  This should give you an idea of what goes down at the events.

You should expect keyboards, friends, food, kendama (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60595.0), presentations, and other geekiness.  There will be a rough itinerary put together with slots for the various presentations and food, but a lot of the time will be meeting people and talking.  And eating.   ^-^   Expect much ice cream.   :thumb:

:thumb:

Cool, thanks Hoffman!

Most of Keycon is a lot of fun.  However, I'd be willing to skip the anal probing of first-time attendees this year, tbh.  Dunno what that has to do with keyboards.  But hey, I guess it wouldn't be Keycon without at least a little anal probing, amirite?

Just putting this out again. There are roughly 2-3 spots open at my house for people to crash if they want. Maybe more if people don't mind couches. Just ask and I'll add you to the dibs list and contact you through PM as the event approaches.  :thumb:

Yeah, there are three beds and then a few couches. I need to figure out how many people I'm ok with having over. I'd like to judge the interest, so far it's just you and CPT.

If any Canadians are going, I promise, I'm not an axe murderer.
I've been rehabilitated and now I only use keyboards for that kind of stuff. Aside from social workers.
Everyone on GH knows that you shouldn't hit a social worker with a keyboard.

Now the real question... how many keyboards can I fit in my car.

Speaking of transporting large amounts of keyboards.  I will never forget jcrouse wheeling stacks of kustoms into KeyCon on a dolly.  :))

So, er, okay, KeyCon. You've got special shirts. And there are cool KBs to see. And I assume you bring along some of your own KBs to show each other.

But then what do you do? Sit around and type? Couldn't you do that at home?

I love KBs as much as anyone here. I'm just  trying to picture this, though... In the long run, wouldn't it be sort of like a solitaire convention?

There's a whole other dynamic to it in that you're hanging out with people just as passionate about keyboards as you are. There's a lot of camaraderie and shared interests beyond keyboards that make the trip worthwhile. You're hanging out with your friends, swapping stories and making new ones.

Even if you're new to the community, I highly encourage attending if you can. It's a ton of fun.

Dude I was in the same boat as you but then I was able to attend a small meetup that Hoff hosted and it was great, we talked about way more than keyboards. Everyone I've talked to from GH has some other hobby in common with me other than keyboards, also they've mostly been really cool guys.  :thumb:

I suppose people who're obsessed with KBs might be more likely to obsess over similar things, too—accordions, or dominoes, or those pill containers people use who need to organize their medication by days of the week... Or Necco wafers you unwrap and line up by colour... Or those doorbell demo displays they have in hardware stores...

That'd be great. However, I can just imagine myself saying to my wife, "Hey, Sweetie, I'm thinking about spending $1K or so flying to Chicago and staying in a hotel and eating out all the time so I can hang around with some other guys and talk about computer keyboards." And then wondering why I've had my credit cards confiscated.

I totally get that. And actually, I'd go even if all you did do was sit around talking about KBs for days and days. I was just pretending to be non-obsessive. It was a novel experience, but not something I'd want to do very often.

At the first keyboard gathering I've been to (dangwang) it was held at a bowling alley..  Sometime after wards some guys came up and said "what are you doing with all the keyboards here?"  Like a group of introverts I don't remember anyone replying to them.

Afterwards I came up with what could have been an awesome reply: "The local drug cartels are running a contest to see who can smuggle the most narcotics in a keyboard without being detected."

It wouldn't take much for Geekhack to crowdfund $250 for a meeting space.  Not like we don't have money laying around.  Although some places charge extra for AV equipment, and may not allow outside food.

I recommend low balling venues on their stated price, or asking for free add-ons.  Worth the try.  From their perspective, if they are having trouble filling the space, any money they make is better than nothing.

He's 100% correct, I used to work for the Swissotel Downtown (IT) and dude, you wouldn't believe...multibillion dollar corps. would have that one twat that would haggle for EVERY little thing. Knock off 20-30 grand off their bill...it was unreal. They expect it to be honest.

Need to get my hotel arrangements set up.... Everything close to venue so expense.

Maybe I can stay where I did last time and make hoofverso or cba give me plentiful rides...

:thumb:   I can give rides if needed.  Only downside might be that I'm staying pretty close to the venue so I'd have to drive out to wherever you'll be, but I'm not sure how far that would be.

If Hoff or CPT is driving you, the Sheraton and Renaissance are close to my house.

I'd be willing to give rides also, I also live about 10 minutes away from there, but I don't mind driving...

I'll be driving up as long as the gas prices stay below $3. Actually I'll probably drive up anyways just so I can bring the collection and have room to buy other stuff if that option comes up.

Here's an idea for those who will be in town for more than a day: Does anyone want to get dim sum? I think that'd be a lot of fun. Good way to chat and chill for a while. I think there's a few of us who are going to be in town for a couple of days before and after the actual meetup on Saturday.

You'd school me, my offense is pretty weak because I normally play doubles and I prefer defense. I'm better at scoring with a 2 bar than I am with a 3 bar.  :))

If anyone would like, I could provide musical entertainment for the event.  So far I know how to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Ode to Joy on the viola, and various other short folk tunes and children's songs.  I'll take requests for any other simple songs on the alto clef D major scale.  Also, I'm not very good, so it probably won't be enjoyable entertainment.
