« on: Wed, 09 October 2013, 19:18:21 »
First and foremost, shoutouts to Krogenar and this discussion for jumpstarting this thread. I also took Krogenar's thread title.

This thread will contain information on keycap sets, their color schemes, and related information such as profile.

WARNING: THIS THREAD HAS A LOT OF PICTURES AND MAY LOAD SLOWLY. :P

If you would like to help, please post information in this format (borrowed from Krogenar). ANYONE CAN HELP, SO PLEASE POST INFO. Thanks :D:

Other Notes: This color scheme is being offered in both DCS and DSA profiles. BunnyLake: "1. The usage of tooling for stepped key was allowed by OTD. 2. From web store: "A prefix often used in scientific and technical words, to denote something above or beyond the usual, normal, expected, or healthy level. Sometimes used to mean extreme or specifically "more than super-". Extended tsangan kit includes mods with "Hyper" and "Fuse". Also the GB offered color-coordinated (blue) USB cable.

Other Notes: The first GB to be make using the Cherry Replica legends. Toxic Set is another set that was postponed until these legends became available. Originally there were going to be 'webbed' orange polycarb, but because each keys varied a bit too much, it didn't look good as a complete set, and this idea was abandoned in favor of a solid white base and a distinct orange polycarb legend. Also, the GeekHack Nostalgia set also uses the Cherry Replica Legends.

Handerbeit!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Inline would be better. Include multiple photographs/renders behind the spoiler tags, but pick one that is 'representative' of the scheme -- something full-on, top-down photo -- that stays outside a spoiler tag. The one I selected for DSA Retro wouldn't fit that description. I'll find another.

Updated my post for Retro DSA.

Found nice photo of Commodore64 photo (inspiration for Retro DSA), and posted techkeys image of the set.

Nested spoiler tags, so that all that is initially seen is the name, and the representative image, and then a spoiler to get more detailed information, and then within that spoiler, more images?

I like Krog's style.

This way when browsing it is easy to look through the various color schemes, and then you can se the details for the one you like, and further ee more images if on wishes.

OTHER NOTES: Inspired by color scheme of the Commodore64 keyboard. Multiple kits including Nostalgia (grey), ISO and reverse colors were available. Matt3o: "We are grateful to the otd.kr community that allowed us to use their DSA 1.75 stepped key tooling for this group buy. Thanks guys, you rock!" During production it was discovered that modifiers over 2 units were slightly too large, and interfered with nearby keys -- GB organizers had replacements made and sent out almost as soon as it was discovered. Notable for use of Matt3o's GB software for kit selection, and relative speed of the groupbuy.[/size]

I like that. I'm going to incorporate an inline real smaller image as the base image though.

Don't forget, when it comes to "Red Alert" there are about 3 different sets that can fall under that heading.

First, the original, Korean group buy set, AKA Rebel Red Alert. These had symbol-only modifiers, and several expansion kits. There was a contrasting white-on-red number row done up in SP's Isotherm font legends. And red-on-beige modifiers, etc.

Second, Ragnorock's Red Alert 2.0 group buy set.

And most recently, tjcaustin's Klaxon group buy. Included the option for white-on-red alphas.

Maybe make them into AKAs for the original? They're all basically the same color scheme, though, right? White on Red.

Would it make sense to also include material ABS/PBT/POM? And also the type of legends Double Shot/Dye sublimation/Laser etching/Pad printing?

Would it make sense to start with only custom-created sets first?  In other words, sets that aren't made for keyboard or typewriter manufacturers?  So like group buy sets on GH and DT as well as some sets on techkeys and Originative and such.  Otherwise, you might get overwhelmed with the huge number of different keycaps that come with various keyboards.

So like Triumph Adler would not be among those sets, but could be added as a bonus for color reference, since it's a "classic" scheme.

Nope. Dump the info here and we have four people who can modify the OPs. This is more about the color schemes than the actual keycap info in my opinion. We can always go back and edit the keycap details but I envision this to primarily be a color reference...with lots of additional detail.

I don't want to set too many rules, I just want people to contribute so I think the lack of goals can help that. If that's not the case, we can change how we're running the thread. But for now, let's see what happens.

Here's the hit list as I can see it, with some notes on how we might define a "scheme" -- all this input from everyone is awesome. It feels like we plopping down a huge piece of clay on a wheel and shaping it up as we go.

======
HIT LIST
======

Red Alert / Klaxon
Toxic
Miami
Cream Cheese on Green
Lily
Coffee
Bumblebee
Graphite
Dolch (multiple variants?)
Yolch
Orangesicle
Sindarin
Valentine
White Valentine
Hyper Fuse
Sanctuary
Calm Depths
23 Commando
Turtle Power
Skidata
Olivetti
====================================

I think what we're doing is working -- pick a CS and start filling in the blanks. Even if all we do is get the name and a decent picture, and a thread that focuses or mentions it, that's a great start.

From Photoelectric - thanks so much!
Quote
Korean CCNG
If it's the same colors as GH's CCnG, then I would include it as a variant, or just as a footnote that it was done by others. Make sense?
Quote
Blue-green with Gray SP DS ABS set
Sounds like a unique color scheme, so it should get it's own entry -- but what to call it?

Quote
Round 3 from DT (multiple sets)
Round 4 from DT (multiple sets)
Earlier rounds?
Grrr, badly named! But I guess that's the name, right? If they're all the same color scheme, same entry.

Quote
Dye-Sub thick PBT "IMSTO" sets by IvanIvanovich: round 1 and round 2 - various colors, mostly on white + beige/gray
Vortex dye sub thick PBT sets sold by Feng in a group buy (lavender, light blue, white, "WYSE", gray, and rainbow) <-- I guess this one might not really count, as the creators are somewhat ambiguous (some people dyed those sets in China)
If it's a unique arrangement of color, then I would give them their own entry, but they would require a good name -- maybe figure out what they most closely resemble?

Quote
Original Cherry double-shot set sold by Originative (white + beige + black font)
Orange + Charcoal (Originative SkiData imitation)
Aren't the Originative sets meant to resemble classic Cherry color schemes? What would we call this scheme? Classic Cherry 'Color-on-Color'? SkiData would definitely qualify as a uniqueCS.

Quote
DSA Dolch (group buy by team RedLine)
If only the profile is changed, I would assume it goes under the original CS entry.

Quote
Purple with white GMK modifier set (IvanIvanovich's GB)
CMYK GMK modifier set (IvanIvanovich's GB)
Esc GMK pack (IvanIvanovich's GB)
Gray + Black + White doubleshot GMK set (IvanIvanovich's GB)
Do we want to consider modifiers alone as being a CS? I don't think they would qualify? What do you guys think? A CS (in my mind) is a complete keyboard color scheme (legend colors as well), including alphas and mods, but not including the case color, or the keycap profile. But what about legends? Let's say I do Turtle Power, but change no colors, except changing the legends to Comic Sans -- does it qualify as a new CS? I would say it would not. It's just a variant of Turtle Power.

Red Alert is the original White on Red color scheme. Rebel Red Alert is the second round. I think Klaxon and Klaxon 2.0 are rounds 3 and 4.

Ragnarock isn't the same color scheme or buy, that should be split up from Red Alert.

Round 3 and Round 4 are Dolch replica Round 3 and Round 4 with extras. I think there's different color schemes available in them. Round 3 had orange for example.

For things like Dolch GMK and Dolch DSA, I'd like input on how people would like to see it. We can separate the OP by company or just put in two profiles.

And yes, I think modifiers are color schemes. But I'd like to focus on full sets first. CMYK and RGB can come later.

Also CS = Color Scheme. Took me a second to figure that out. If we're going to use new acronyms, please define them. This thread will have too many of them as it is.

I will update the hit list once we define some things such as the IMSTO Buys and what we want to do with a modifier set. We being the community here.

WTF are you on about? I think you ate some crack for breakfast or something. :P

The original "O.G." Red Alert set, AKA Rebel Red Alert, was a Korean GB set. If you bought everything, it's like 220 keycaps or something like that. Red-on-white full set, red-on grey mod set, contrasting white-on-red number row.

Red Alert 2.0 was a GH GB, organized by Ragnorock. Made some of the GH elders mad, who started calling it "fake alert." Had the option of white-on-red modifiers.

Klaxon GB (RA 2.0 copy) was of course run by tjcaustin, and the new thing about it was the inclusion of a white-on-red alphanum option. There is no Klaxon 2.0 yet.

Round 3 and Round 4 are Dolch replica Round 3 and Round 4 with extras. I think there's different color schemes available in them. Round 3 had orange for example.
Round 4 had 4 distinct color schemes. Info
  • Spherical-Style - A space cadet inspired set.
  • Round3-Style - Dolch color set with some orange keys.
  • Retro-Style - A soware inpired set with tweaked colors
  • Noir-Style - I belive this was just unique because of the many symbol legends
For things like Dolch GMK and Dolch DSA, I'd like input on how people would like to see it. We can separate the OP by company or just put in two profiles.

It seems like if the colors didn't are exactly the same as the original we should just include a note that a replicate set was made and maybe some info like date and differences from original.

And yes, I think modifiers are color schemes. But I'd like to focus on full sets first. CMYK and RGB can come later.

This makes sense.

CPT, in the OP, you have 'Triumph-Adler' for one set, keep in mind there are 3 known schemes that TA goes by, so that could get very confusing

The Originative Sets should be different from the original sets, as they are not replicas but slightly different versions of the original sets, just something to keep in mind

there should be a thread on just Cherry sets..or just on sets in general

What does everyone think of using mockups? I really don't want to include them since I feel they aren't accurate to what the real caps look like. Maybe that section can be CGI Renders/Mockups?

Some of the color schemes we're cataloging have never actually been made (Yolch, Orangesicle). I wouldn't make the "representative" image the mockup or render if there's a photo of the real thing. The contrast between the mockups and the actual sets can be pretty striking!

No, I think you're right to keep us on track. If we don't stay focused, we'll run out of steam. Let's review why we're doing this. Is it so that we know the minutiae of every groupbuy? (Was it DS ABS DCS?) No. I wanted to do it so that when someone said "SoWaRe is so awesome", I would have someplace to find out what they meant, colorwise. Or, if I wanted to develop a new, ugly color scheme that no one but me will ever want (House Tully) I can make sure it hasn't been done before.

So if all we manage to do is create a list of the color schemes with a representative photo, then I think we've succeeded -- the extra details are just cream that we can add and refine later on. I'm really to blame with my template with all those extra details, LOL!

Yeah that's my feeling too Krog. We make a repository for colors first and all the little details are great additions. Of course I'd like this to be as information-rich as possible but I'm just a try hard :P. It's kinda like playing through the story mode and then being a completion-ist in a video game! ^__^

And cool MKULTRA :D

jd rage corrected you about O.G. Alert Klaxon 3.0, and now you have butthurt. It's cool -- we all understand now.  :p
We'll have a nice photo list of all the major color schemes very soon, and the correction wars can rage.

With different color schemes? I don't think so.

there are countless cherries out there with a lot of differnet color schemes and varieties
There just isn't a ton of information on GH about them..

Do you have any information on the other sets?
I do have some on my desktop at home, so i'll get it to you later
In Sherry's GMK thread, people are confusing a German Police Board for a Triumph-Adler one, but we have reason to believe now that they are the same exact board now...
There is information out there on them..it's just hard to find  :))

Hey Anson,

Cherry Classic Beige, Olivetti, and Ski Data are slightly different than mine.

I will explain.  My Classic Beige, everything is on par, but the white keycaps are very sharp.  For the Olivetti, the beige is suppose to be a darker grey.  The white keycaps are also very sharp.  And lastly, the Ski Data's orange is no longer available.  I went with the new GMK orange known as V2.

The colors used in Two Tone Classic Beige are BJ CP and CR. Olivetti is BJ CP and V4. Ski Data is N9 and V2.  For the Dolch, it's CC, CP, and N9.

DCS is an SP profile, which is supposedly their Cherry replica profile. Or are you referring to the original Cherry and GMK stuff.

Yeah, original Cherry and GMK stuff.  You put Cherry DCS Profile.  SP's 3 top row replicates the Cherry profile, but the 3 bottom row does not.

Just so everyone knows, the four Keepers have access to edit the first four posts that I made. I believe BlueBar added the Triumph Adler info, which is why I'm so confused. People keep telling me I edited something that I didn't lol. No offense to BlueBar, just pointing that out so if I seem lost, that's why.

Image borrowed from this thread. Related to that do we have a plan on what to do with images it'd be nice if we stored all the images in one location to prevent problems if those pictures stop being available. Obviously that could lead to problems if people are possessive of their images and don't want them used here.

And no, there is currently no plan to back up these images. I'm not sure what the best way to do that is. Thoughts anyone?

Also, I'm done editing this for the day. If you've added something and it's not in the OPs, it will be. I would like to thank everyone for contributing so far. And I'm sure the Keepers love me dumping work on them :P

From the GB threads. Not sure about Rebel Red Alert.

Red Alert 2.0
red(RBV) on white (WFK)
red(RBV) on gray(GAL)
white(WFK) on red(RBV)

Klaxon

Main post with (roughly) finished entries starting to fill out. We can check these off, they're in the main list:

RainDrop
Retro DSA
Handarbeit
Red Alert
Dolch
Miami
SoWaRe

The following entries are peppered throughout the thread, but have not yet been placed into the main list.

Triumph-Adler
Bumble Bee
Round 4
Noir
Wyse
Klaxon
Ragnarok
Cream Cheese and Green

Which would bring us to a total of 15 color schemes indexed.

MKULTRA said he was working on the following, which haven't appeared in the thread just yet:

UPDATING THE SETS I HAVE KNOCKED OUT HERE.

Toxic
Lily
Hyper Fuse
23 Commando

I'll do the Valentine sets right now.

That leaves the following color schemes to be picked up:

Coffee
Graphite
Yolch
Orangesicle
Sindarin
Sanctuary
Calm Depths
Turtle Power
Skidata
Olivetti

Oh, and sorry Cpt about not using the formatting from earlier.

I'll do another mass update when I'm out of work unless someone else gets to it first.

I feel the Valentine and White Valentine are good enough for inclusion.

Feeling good about Coffee and Turtle Power entries -- only issue is that I need help determining what legends were used. I just assume that they're WYSE for the most part, but if this is incorrect, please correct me!

Nice work.  :thumb:

Yes these both look to be the standard wyse font. In fact the first post from the turtle power gb says that's what they are.

All group buy keycaps from Signature Plastics will use WYSE font unless otherwise stated. It costs around $35 per key to use a non-standard legend, last I heard, and that even applies for other Signature Plastics fonts, such as Isotherm. So not many GBs will use a non-standard font, and will stick with SP's stadard font, WYSE.

Thank you! Also, your updated bbcode template was a big help. My only modification was making the 'rep image' 500px wide (looked better to me on the top page) and added an additional break code between CG renders and Notes. I've also been looking into an offline BBCode editor (meh, nothing I really liked) and figuring a way to download the whole mess into HTML for safekeeping. If someone's photobucket account gets canned we could lose some images, that kind of nonsense.

Well one option to back up the page would be to in Chrome/FireFox. Choose "Save Page As...", make sure you have "Complete web page" selected and it will save the html from the page plus make a directory will all the images from the page.

I'm updating the second post right now, it's a bit behind. I'm going from 1st page to last page since we missed some, so don't worry, I know for example that Ragnarok is not up to date even though I just included it. However, if you post images, please state their sources. I do not feel comfortable using the work of somebody else without giving them credit for it.

*sigh* Ok, I figure it's probably more important to get the entries up and 90+% right, and that most people wouldn't mind if their photos are used -- they did post them to the Internet, after all. I'll see if I can attribute every photo for you. Otherwise, just delete the photos if you think that's the wise decision.

Theres nothing to sigh about. Just write their names under the photos. Yes they did post them on the internet, but does that mean we shouldn't say "thank you" in some way? I mean we also write the authors of each entry under it.

You have permission to use any of my photos!

That is very kind of you ;) I will still give you credit if we use one of your images :p

Another request: Don't put too many images in each entry, reloading the first page already takes a bit because of all the images :-X I think 2 or 3 should usually be enough.

Sure there is -- seems, well, petty and silly to insist on that before placing the entries into the lineup. One of the Keepers more recent declarations was to "get stuff done". Well, I'm getting it done! Have I missed the occasional umlat? Almost certainly. But the point of this exercise was that it wouldn't be an exercise -- it would get done. How about this, as a compromise: if someone says, "Hey! That's my image!" we attribute it.

Okay, well, I'll get around to it when I've got more time. I'll defer to Capt (Archbishop of the Keepers) on whether these entries require attribution before inclusion. In the future, I'll be sure to attribute everything. As for sighing -- I sigh when it suits me. Sometimes I even throw my arms out when I do it. ;)

And here I was expecting to hear from Ray's lawyer. Again, I don't think the purpose of the Color Scheme Archive was to be an attribution engine. It was to get images of the schemes up there for viewing. Ray, still enjoying your avatar. Voltan rocks.

I'm just putting them all in here as an experiment. Break them out into categories if that makes sense. Maybe break them out by colors, or maybe by whether they actually exist or are just proposed color schemes.

I think you misunderstood me a bit.

I competly agree! After all, this is a workshop. It was a please, and I did add the sources on the entries I just added. It isn't too bad if we add the sources later, however the "source code" of the second post is already very long and adding the sources later just takes up more time imo.

Okay, well, I'll get around to it when I've got more time. I'll defer to Capt (Archbishop of the Keepers) on whether these entries require attribution before inclusion. In the future, I'll be sure to attribute everything.

I was just talking about the photos, nothing else.

Again, I don't think the purpose of the Color Scheme Archive was to be an attribution engine. It was to get images of the schemes up there for viewing.

It isn't. But it is still a wiki of some sort.

Subtle? Sorry, I had Calm Depths (aka Bloo) on the brain from earlier in the day. Also, umlauts are the tool of the devil -- much like the metric system.

Other Notes: Sherryton: "This was a special order made by the owner of iomania, and I think he also owns KBDMania.  Before moldings by Signature Plastic were very cheap. It was somewhere around $15-35. I think the guy paid around $25 / legend." Round 2 later made reversed colors available. Seems that a GB was run by Tsangan, then a second round was started by GupGup and then picked up by tjcaustin. For second round of this color scheme, individual kits were referred to as CCoG (Cream Cheese on Green) or GoCC (Green on Cream Cheese).

Thanks metalliqaz -- CCnG entry added to my list.

Ok, here's what's left as far as I can see:

Waiting on MKULTRA for Toxic, Lily, Hyper Fuse, and 23 Commando.

That leaves: Graphite, Orangesicle (CCnO), Skidata, Olivetti, Solarized (maybe waiting for them to settle on style?), and Round 3, Round 4 which frankly are puzzling to me. Am I correct in believing that Round 3, and Round 4 each contained multiple sets? Also, as suggested by metalliqaz, IMSTO light blue and gray PBTs -- does IMSTO have a name for these color schemes?

Round 3 was dolch colors. Round 4 had several styles. Noir which posted in this thread, spherical which you have, retro style which is similar to soware, and r3 style in classic and orange.

I just poked around and realized that the Imsto dyesubs were actually released in pretty much every color, so I would say it doesn't count as a distinct colorway.

I think the second post now takes too long to load up. I can resize the preview images and upload them somewhere, then it should load a lot faster. What do you guys think?

That's a good idea. I think we need a backup like xavierblak and BlueBar are suggested/suggesting for the images. Load time and keeping the images up is something I didn't really think about. It's loading fine for me but maybe we can set the images at like width=300? I think anything smaller and it will be hard to see.

Can we provision a directory for the images? I like the 500px wide images, but I understand that for others a long load time would defeat the purpose of the archive. The images are the whole point of this, however. What about putting the extended entries (and those additional images) on the second page of the thread, and the main index can host a single representative image, and a link to the extended entry?

Or, we trim down the excess images to make the entries more manageable?

Also, I was thinking -- would it be a good idea to put a PM link in each entry, for corrections? I played around with getting the PM system to insert a subject line, but couldn't suss it out. It would be nice if you could put a "correction" link into each entry, and if you click it then a PM opens up to a designated user, with a subject line such as: "Handarbeit Correction". Or is that overkill? I can make it send to a designated user, but not the subject line.

Your browser should download the images parallel, so while you are still loading the big images that are hidden in the spoilers, you should already be able to see the smaller preview images.

If there are errors people should just post them in this thread or write a PM to one of the Keepers, I think that would be the easiest way.

Where should I save the preview images? Imgur?

I've been using Cap's "Questions/Answers" thread as a model, and over there they try to minimize the discussion that happens in-thread. I figure a link in the entry itself might cut down on the discussion. Or, we have a mod trim out the discussion once it's reached it's conclusion, to keep these sorts of pages squeaky clean?

The red text lines above need to have the crossed out text changed to what I put in green to be correct. Pretty much everything it says under the Dolch entry on page 1 is what it should also say for SkiData

Although keeping the thread clean is a good idea I don't think it matters in this case. We have five posts at the first page reserved (and I think we can squeeze some more in if needed) so all relevant info should be able to get saved in there. Everything beyond that would just be open discussion. Or do you want something else on the later pages?

Can we provision a directory for the images? I like the 500px wide images, but I understand that for others a long load time would defeat the purpose of the archive. The images are the whole point of this, however. What about putting the extended entries (and those additional images) on the second page of the thread, and the main index can host a single representative image, and a link to the extended entry?

Or, we trim down the excess images to make the entries more manageable?

Extended entries are fine now but it's a bit of pain to hunt down later. I would rather just have the archive all in the first five entries and the discussion behind like BlueBar said. I'm forced to the do the extended entries with Simple Questions because of how large it is and my lack of preparation when I first started it (I only grabbed the OP).

I think PMing one of the Keepers or just posting here like Flynn did works fine. Agree with BlueBar.

Where should I save the preview images? Imgur?

I think Imgur is our best bet. It seems to have the highest bandwidth capacity.

I have recently exceeded my imgur free image quota, and it is hiding some of my images :(
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs.

Ok, updated with the table of contents and info that Krog added. Please check it out and let me know if the Table of Contents is working well and if we're missing anything.

Also, the second post hit the 40k character limit. We might need to start pushing all the links to bit.ly or goo.gl.

Edit: At a quick glance, I think we're missing this and this from R3/R4 and this. Think MKULTRA has some stuff coming too?

Other Notes: The first GB to be make using the Cherry Replica legends. Toxic Set is another set that was postponed until these legends became available. Originally there were going to be 'webbed' orange polycarb, but because each keys varied a bit too much, it didn't look good as a complete set, and this idea was abandoned in favor of a solid white base and a distinct orange polycarb legend. Also, the GeekHack Nostalgia set also uses the Cherry Replica Legends.

My previous three posts are what's done so far. First post is the index, second is existing color schemes, and the third post is for proposed (or in process). I think all that remains is Round 4, in more detail, and Graphite, I think.

I think the picture we had in place was of the actual TA tyepwriter, so this is an improvement. I will update my own with this new image.

TA usually refers to the blue and light gray scheme, although this is also a TA color scheme. The photo from Ivan was similar to the next photo with the caps on the typewriter, just a close up.

I've updated my working post with that new image, changed the photocredit, and in the notes section referenced the discussion that the blue color show may be faded, and not represent the original color scheme.

I wish we could host these images with GH directly.

The Geekhack 60% Nostalgia is OAS and... NN : http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49655.msg1210898#msg1210898

And there are 2 photos in this post: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49655.msg1211490#msg1211490

Updated the GH Nostalgia entry, but I haven't moved it to 'produced' -- not until I get a nice shot of the keycaps on a keyboard -- but it's technically headed for the 'produced' category!  :thumb: Thanks for the update Oobly.

This is yellowed light blue that turned to teal.  Originally it was all light blue, from what I've been told--likely N5 for the modifiers and Olivetti blue for the legends (V4)  (Reference: IvanIvanovich).   That teal color does not exist in the GMK color selection, and to imitate it, a custom color would need to be ordered.

Ouch! This thread made my computer freeze.

Don't look at some of Halverson's sale threads then
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs.
