The Geekhack Glossary
« on: Tue, 05 November 2013, 10:52:01 »
Welcome to the Geekhack Glossary!

We will collect common terms and abbreviations with a short and precise definition here. This glossary is mainly directed at new members who might not understand what certain abbreviations or terms mean that are commonly used on GH. If you read a term somewhere in the forums but don't know its meaning or if you think that some term needs an explanation feel free to reply to this thread, we will then add a new entry to the glossary.
If there are any mistakes please report them as well by replying to this thread.

To search the glossary, you can use your browsers search function, usually activated by pressing Ctrl + F.

Vintage - buzzword created to make users think that old switches feel smoother, thus should be purchased at a nice premium when they would have just sat in a box. In reality, this can't be corroborated with any factual evidence. In fact, statements have shown that "vintage" switches are just like any other switch and different batches result in small differences.

Disqualified for not using tags.

I'm NOT a fan of the shine discussion here. This should just explain what the phrases mean. Can we edit that out of ABS, PBT, and POM?

This list should be objective as possible and not be leading.

I took it out. Should the differences between the plastics even be mentioned at all?

I'm not sure. I envisioned this as just a phrase/abbreviation guide. Like a supplement to someone's reading while they're going through threads. I think there's enough info everywhere on the differences on the plastics.

Thoughts everyone? Let us know what you think. BlueBär what are you thinking?

Yeah, I like the idea of a Glossary, where you can go to look up terms you don't know yet.

It should be linked in the nav bar at the top of the page, when complete. Just a single, locked, one-post thread.

YES this is what we need. I was going to suggest this a month or so ago when I first really got into this.

I think stuff like tsangan and possibly things like stabs (stabilizers, but people love calling them that which confuses noobs)

I think those things need to be in the wiki, for sure, but a glossary would just be to explain confusing terms. Like stabs, as you said. And DS, when people mean double shot.

Should the entry for Tsangan etc. contain a description of its contents (ie. 1.5 Ctrl and Alt,...)?

Also:
LoL
CoD
BF4
BL2

Shouldn't we limit it on keyboard terms?

Diatec is a coportation that makes power supplies, PC peripherals, and keyboards under the brand name "Filco".

Diatec info page

Diatec is the coporation
Filco is the keyboard brand name.

Just like how Kimberly-Clark sells tissue paper under their brand name "Kleenex".

Another abbreviation: Click Clack Keycap (CC or Clack or Clark)

And should we rename this to GeekHack Glossary? Or do we think Dictionary works?

Edit: Should the entry read "DT - Deskthority, another keyboard forum/community"? instead of "Deskthority [DT]?

Yeah, glossary might work better.

I put the abbreviations and other forms of the terms in brackets except if the abbreviation is normally used, ABS for example.

Fantastic idea!  And should be linked from the Simple Questions thread.

Some humble suggestions:

CC - see ClickClack
ClickClack - a GH user who makes custom keycaps; also refers to these keycaps, the most common of which features a stylised skull
Clack Factory - ClickClack's business name (?)
Clark - mispronunciation of "Clack", as in "Click Clark"
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I united them to one short entry since they are all referring to each other in some way, but I really liked your definition - thanks!

I'm done for today - the glossary is 2652 characters long right now (with BBCode about twice as much), not bad for a single day. Again thanks to everyone who contributed!

GH  :-[

GLWS

If you're asking what they mean:

GH = Geekhack
GB = group buy
GLWS = good luck with sale
GLWT = good luck with trade
GLWB = good luck with (wanted to) buy
GLWA = good luck with auction
GLWTW = good luck with testing water

It sometimes seems like a whole other language.

Commonly, there are 60%, 80% (86/87/88, or TKL), and Full-size (104/105). Also my 40% haha.

110% is something sprit made up to describe extra keys on a full-size. :)

Don't forget 75%. Also, even though there's boards like the FC660 that are slightly larger than 60% I don't like adding a specific percentage for those. It just makes it overly complicated imo.

I'm NOT a fan of the shine discussion here. This should just explain what the phrases mean. Can we edit that out of ABS, PBT, and POM?

This list should be objective as possible and not be leading.

...so I added a neutral definition.

PD for paid - is it? Saw it a few times, not sure what it means.

Never saw PD. Do people really need an abbreviation for four letters? :-X

All others were added.

Glossary? Awesome!

I got a suggestion: There are several stores and other sites mentioned. Could you add a link to those sites? I mean... if you get the information about something you were looking for and then have to look for a link somewhere else seems like a hassle ;) (even if it might be as trivial as using a search engine).

It could also be a link inside the forum such as the "all keycaps site list" thread: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45672.0

Maybe a collection of vendors would be something, but I don't know if I want to add links in the glossary. It really takes just a second to search for a site.

I think that there's already a great list of vendors showcased by the Keycaps thread and in /r/mech. We could point to those lists but I'm also not sure if this is the thread to do so.

I kinda saw this thread as a lit of words and abbreviations used on GH that might confuse new members or not really be relevant outside the GH community.

Ok, I'll look for them. Question: are we concerned about copyright? If yes, I'll ask the original poster for permission before we put in the glossary. I don't have any of these kits, unfortunately.

I make is a personal policy that all the pictures I post will have a link giving credit; check out this link. You should give credit and then if you want, you can PM the OP. I usually just link without asking with the policy that if they ask me to take the picture down, I will.

This for tsangan kit

For Moogle kit, I thought the one here by Ovoxo is quite good - his Moogle kit from Round 2:

Ok, are these good for glossary especially when you come into GH now when the GB are over: Miami, Hyperfuse, GON, GH60, Round 4 and Round 5 and whatnot. I'm still not sure what exactly is GON and IMSTO. Ha ha.

Check this out for Keycap GBs. I'd rather put the GBs over there.

I'm still not sure what exactly is GON and IMSTO. Ha ha.

Ever scroll down on the main GeekHack page and go look at "Vendor Forums" and all the sub-forums underneath that section? GON and IMSTO are right there.

The glossary is mainly for terms and acronyms people don't understand while they read through threads. You still need to read threads though.

And BS - buckling spring, for that matter.

RD - robber dome keyboard, where each keypress deforms a rubber dome causing contact between the PCB and a conductive pad under the rubber dome.  Commonly used in keyboards packaged with systems.
BS - buckling spring - a switch technology where a physical spring buckles as the keycap is pressed down, causing an electrical contact to be made.  Common in older IBM and recent Unicomp keyboards.

Both a bit verbose, I know.

Should we add in TKL/75%/60%/40% here or should I add it to the OP of Simple Questions? I think there's some confusion. Do we need it at all?

Not necessarily.  People might assume it is 75% the physical case size, whereas it is actually based on the number of switches.  Isn't it?  LOL

OK I added a general note for percentages and changed 60% slightly since that is kind of an excpetion. I think this is a good compromise, please tell me what you think.

This is on purpose as "tenkeyless" is a lot more common than "80%". I can add a "see tenkeyless" though.

Agreed - but we have MOQ, GLWS, WTB etc. in the glossary too, so I think it should be in it.

That's where the name of the site comes from and what the name "Geekhack" means - the explanation of what "Geekhack" is, is this forum and its community. I don't think it fits to be honest. Compare it to the entries for Deskthority or KBDMania for example.

However maybe we should do a newki entry called "The History of Geekhack" - thats where it would fit perfectly. There's one on the old wiki but it just contains links to esoomena and the mystery keycap...

That's a good idea - the mystery keycaps, new moderators, r00tw0rm, perma-banned members, all that makes up GH folklore and should be recorded somewhere for posterity.

Should add in rubberdome or RD. What's a good definition for it though?

RDOMS

I'm not so sure about this one. I feel like the GH lore is part of getting to know the community. Seems to cheapen the experience if there's just a thread about all of the stories.

Your point is valid, and would provide new members with a sense of belonging as they learn the lore and history.

OTOH how many people actually read this sort of stuff before asking questions?

Also it would provide a handy reference and, ideally, links to the relevant posts for noobs like me :p

What do I do now? Burn my only CC as a ritual to wash my sins off my soul?

I think that generic definition should be fine (although CC would have the last say).  The main thing is not to say where dibs come from or what to do with them.

Hm. Is it worth putting all the Korean stuff here or should there be another thread that compiles all of that. What do you think would be easier for people to refer to?

Maybe we should make a thread that collects custom keyboards? I could put in a short definiton for korean customs though.

Edit: Oh and I could need some help with TG3 and Deck, Deck is a brand of TG3 Electronics, right?

It could be easier to have a Custom Keyboards section that could include ongoing projects from GH as well as older Korean customs. TG3 is the parent company for Deck keyboards, TG3 offers alot more variety of electronics whereas, Deck is more or less their gaming logo for keyboards.

Added definitions for Deck and TG3

On the Deck website, it seems like they want their keyboards to be known as a backlit gaming board.

On the TG3 website, they advertise themselves as "...a leading supplier of engineered input solutions". They sell their input devices to the "...medical, industrial, point of sale, military, mobile data, telecommunications, white goods, and gaming..." marketplaces.

I could change TG3 to "An input device manufacturer that is also the parent company of Deck." if that suits it better.

However I think I should actually reduce the Deck entry to just "A keyboard manufacturer" since I used that already a couple of times and didn't expand any other entries on what kind of keyboards they produce.

Might be worth adding links to GMK & BSP websites since there are lots of companies with those names :
http://www.bspeurope.dk/home.html
http://www.gmk-electronic-design.de/en.html

Also,
BNIB : Abbreviation for "brand new in box".
NOS : Abbreviation for "new-old stock" - unsold stock of a product that is no longer produced.

Will try and post some more here soon.

Added your definitions, thanks!
However I did not add the links, I kind of want to keep it link-free (it currently only contains two links to pictures). The entries for both BSP and GMK include the full name of the companies - searching for those gets you directly to the websites.

I don't think adding something that barely even is a thing would be useful. I mean the thread is only 2 pages long, and there are no pictures apart from 3D renders of it yet. If it becomes more popular, sure.

Welcome to Geekhack!

They are differences on the F and J keys to help touch-typists find the home keys.

Bars are short raised sections along the lower edge of the keycap.

Scoops are where the keycaps are dished slightly more than the other keys.

There are also nubs - small raised pimples usually in the centre of the keycap, although you're more likely to find those on the 5 key on a numeric keypad.

Bars are, of course, the best option out of these :p

So far for me, bars have been the only option haha. Seems like the other two are unique to keyboard hobbyist shops or vintage keyboards. IDK about the raised dots, maybe for the older cellphone keypads?

Alps can also refer to a stem/mount design for keycaps. The Alps mount is used by Alps switches and by Matias switches and looks like this:

Just means extra large super big.  Not really a keyboard-specific term.

Often used in reference to Enter keys that are abnormally large.

Since Windows 98 is so ubiquitous it would be redundant to add this to the glossary.

Being a relative newcomer to the wonderfully obsessive world of keyboards i think the Glossary is an excellent way for the noobs like me to get acquainted with the terminology used by the community.

I think it would be useful to have reference to the new and hybrid switches available ie:zealios,Tealios,zealiostotle,cherrystotle,zilents,hako,halo...etc this may have been done elsewhere on GH but i think the Glossary should be a one stop shop for terms and abbreviations that aren't immediately recognised.

There definitely should be a summary somewhere how they differ, in what variations they're available and which ones are great, good or trash. I don't think that fits in here though, and I don't have enough knowledge about them to create anything like that.

Terms and abbreviations, yes, but not necessarily a technical discussion of the differences between all the various switches.

Perhaps noting that X, Y and Z switches are compatible with Cherry switches would suffice.  And maybe noting one particular aspect of those switches that differentiate them from vanilla Cherry switches.  Zealios - switches designed by Zeal with a distinctive purple slider.  Something like that.

HI, thanks for the glossary!
I'm absolutly new to this so I thought I'd read the glossary first.
It's great but some word can be odd for a newbie. You describe DSA and SA as "DSA: The short spherical keycap profile used by Signature Plastics." "SA: The tall spherical keycap profile used by Signature Plastics."
I thought they were typewriter style keycaps. Isn't the word "Concave" more fitting for the definition? Again, I just discovered the keyboard world, maybe it makes sense to describe them as "spherical".

Generally, the concave surface of old (pre-1980s) keys tended to be "spherical" (that is, a high edge all the way around) and modern ones are usually "cylindrical" (with high edges on the sides but not top and bottom).

My guess is that since manual typewriters took a firm solid strike to actuate, there needed to be a well-defined depression for your fingertip to press and not slide out of.
