Don't mean to butt in, but I was thinking of schemes that could complement the Infinity DCS drop. I thought of this! Might not be everyone's cup of tea. BGA mods, WFK alphas, WFK legends on mods, BGA legends on alphas. I was also concerned about too many designs resembling others (like hyperfuse). xP

Second picture shows the layout with Infinity DCS mods.

I definitely think the mod's text color should be the alpha color to get better contrast. I think the blue-on-blue would look too similar on a board.

As for naming, Alpine Winter sounds pretty good.

I'm interested in a GB. I think it would be awesome if you incorporated the super key logo that is in the infinity kit.

I hadn't really thought about legends. This is a good idea, especially if we go with a name like Alpine Winter.

Normally, custom legends cost extra because SP has to cut the mold insert. But since the mountain logo has already been cut, we should be able to get it done at no additional cost. I donated the extra to have the 1x legend cut for Badwrench's set, so I own that one. But I'll have to check with nubbinator to make sure he's okay with us using his 1.25x legend as well.

The question is, do I then include blanks as well?

I'm fine with using the legend as long as this is a non-profit GB.

Awesome! Yes this will be a non-profit GB. Thanks, nubs!

So just to keep everyone happy, the bottom row keys will include (2) 1U Alps Logo, (2) 1.25U Alps Logo, (2) 1U blanks, and (2) 1.25U blanks. I'm open to opinions about adding 1U and 1.25U Fn keys as well, so everyone let me know what you think.

Here are some mockups, one with BX mod legends and the other with GTL legends (same as alphas):

I'm not convinced that the keyboard-layout-editor.com colors are accurate. I really do think the BX teal will stand out just fine against the BGA blue background, but without color chips I can't know for sure. Does anyone have color chips, or know someone who does and can get me a decent picture of GTL, BGA and BX in the same photo?

EDIT: I just had an idea for a third option. BFQ is pretty much a brighter version of BX, as in they are close to the same hue. I think it might stand out better for the mod legends while still going well with BX teal from Badwrench's set.

I like all 3 mockups.

I do really dig the BFQ legend mockup the most, but think that the GTL might be the most universally liked due to less mixing of more colors (even if your eyes will most likely see them as the same.
wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

I agree with the BFQ legends. The lighter color contrasts better with the darker blue keys so the legends appear to be the same color as the infinity set, even if slightly lighter.

+1 For BFQ legends.  Though I would agree with Badwrench that I feel the higher contrast of using the same color of the alphas for the modifier legends (GTL) would be better liked universally, but I definitely understand wanting to complete the chain by tying this to the Infinity Mod set, which I still think is a great idea!

Based on the layout editor mockups alone, it really looks like it's between BFQ and GTL.

I still have a hunch that BX might be bright enough on its own compared to BGA. Here's a composite based on Krogenar's color ring scans:

Hopefully this gives a better sense of "real life" looks. Still, a tough call to make.

I hate to backtrack on what I said earlier but GTL looks less cluttered than BFQ. I'm thinking the keys won't look quite right unless you are pairing it with infinity modifiers. Also, any reason why this couldn't be expanded to TKL or 104 keys? Even if it was an optional part of the GB, I'm sure a lot of us would shell out the money to put them on their v80mts's.

Definitely GTL. It will make the set more universal, which at this point we kinda need.

OP has been updated with a new mockup including GTL modifier legends, Alps icon mods in 1U and 1.25U, and bottom-row Fn keys in 1U and 1.25U.

Also, any reason why this couldn't be expanded to TKL or 104 keys? Even if it was an optional part of the GB, I'm sure a lot of us would shell out the money to put them on their v80mts's.

I'm pretty convinced that we need to keep our focus on 60% for this buy. Lastpilot will have a TKL/104 set coming soon after this one.

Also, forgot to mention I think I've settled on Alpine Winter as the name for this colorway. It fits so well even without it being an Alps set, but all the more so because it is Alps.

One more thing, can I get a sanity check on the extra keys? Particularly the top row, I'm not sure why or how I ended up with a blue 1U backslash. Is that a normal thing?

I love the name Alpine Winter.

I thought it looked more wintery when there was more than one shade of blue. It also made it look less like a copy of Raindrop.
Like njbair I also suspect the contrast just might be ok with BX (or BFQ) legends on the mods, but it'd hard to say, really.

I'm defo keen for a TKL set. I got one of the trial run / initial small batch of the V80MTS, but I don't think mk.com have them restocked yet, so there can't be very many of them out there yet.

The blue R1 1u Backslash should probably be blue R1 1u Grave/Tilde for people who want symmetry.  Technically you could use either key on the right edge, but I have to assume most people who use split backspace do it in an HHKB style.

I'm not sure why such a key was in the Infinity modifiers set.

Here's a couple examples I quickly found on vintage keyboards where a 1u blue backslash would come in handy. Notice they're ISO
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Focus-Electronic-FK-2001-5-PIN-DIN-Clicky-Mechanical-Keyboard-ALPS-Type-Switches-/171910326204?hash=item2806a767bc

I have no idea if anybody would have a need for a 1u modifier backslash for their 60% keyboards though.

Edit: Is there any need for a 1.75u ctrl (or is it 2u? I can't really tell)?
Edit Edit: Never mind, HHKB layout uses that key.

Edit Edit Edit: My post is all kinds of wrong

Wouldn't that still be the wrong profile since the vintage boards have the backslash on R4?

Yeah but those aren't Row 1 profile anyway. Also FYI, those are not ISO...the inverted L-shaped Enter is an ANSI variation, and the Apple version is its own thing.

I think that key should actually be a mod-colored grave/tilde. I'll update the image in the OP. Please keep the sanity checks coming!

I like the idea of including, at least as an option, mod-colored caps for Backslash/Pipe and Backquote/Tilde. This provides the option for color symmetry on the board. Thanks.

I agree 100% with this. I think having extras is much better than being without, even if the cost is a little higher. I'd say keep the backslash and tilde as they are with mod-colored options for the sake of customization and symmetry!

I agree with you both. I originally had a 1U mod-colored backslash/pipe, but I don't see a need for that. Boards are usually set up one of the following ways:

Standard

Symmetry

Symmetry w/ Split Backspace

Symmetry with Grave/Tilde

Standard with Esc and R2 Backspace

I can't think of any variations that need a mod-colored 1U backslash/pipe, so I'm scrapping it.

In fact, I remap my keyboards to a HHKB layout, so that I swap Backslash and Backspace, CapsLock become Left Control, and I swap the Alt and "Win" keys (Mac layout).

I love BX and BGA. Can't go wrong with either of those or both. I'm interested. Hopefully we can finally get a full ALPS set off the ground.

Keep in mind that Alps have a small following, limited number of boards that use them, and aren't cheap to do at SP.  There is going to be massive price ballooning with all the caps people are asking to add.  Make it small and tailored to what's readily available and you'll have a better chance of making it happen.

Just wanted to add my support. I'm in for a set, preferably without purple or yellow (I like the blue!)

I'm definitely mindful of price creep here, and it's something I definitely want to avoid. Compared to my original mockup in purple and yellow, the current mockup includes four more extra keys and one fewer spacebar (since the AEKII spacebar isn't available), which probably works out to about even. I don't intend to add any more, and I may decide to get rid of the bottom row Fn keys depending on price (since I added those last and haven't heard much one way or the other about them).

Speaking as someone with the Infinity in Hacker layout, I am okay with this. As a touch typist, and as someone with a programmable board (obviously), legends are more of a luxury than a requirement for me anyway. They're just nice to look at, but I don't need an FN on the bottom row. I can deal with using a 1u blank for the additional 1u keys next to the Alpine mountain logo.

I actually plan on using Badwrench's modifiers for the first two rows from the bottom up, but my aforementioned thoughts are just in relation to this set alone. :thumb:

I'll add my support to keep the 1.25u fn key, but it's not the end of the world if you remove them.

I'm interested.  I like the bluish or purplish modifiers, with a light grey alphas.  Not a fan of yellow, too loud.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

In fact, I remap my keyboards to a HHKB layout, so that I swap Backslash and Backspace, CapsLock become Left Control, and I swap the Alt and "Win" keys (Mac layout).

So are you saying you would use a 1U blue backslash?
Depends on the board, but with most standard layouts, such as, for example, the KBP V60MTS, what is needed is a Backslash key that is the same size as the standard Backspace key. I usually just end up with incorrectly labeled caps or I use blanks for the mods.

By the same token, on a standard layout board without a split Right Shift, I usually remap Right Ctrl as Fn, so if a 1.25x Fn cap were available, I could use it. Otherwise, I use a mislabled cap or a blank.

In case anyone's wondering, this project is still alive and kicking. I'm eagerly waiting along with many of you to find out what happens with the Badwrench buy.

Matching that set was one of my main goals for this buy, but I really want to stick with Cherry font for the legends. If SP doesn't offer to remake the keys in the right font I'm not really sure what to do...

I think it will be completely fine to continue with the original plan even if SP doesn't fix badwrench's buy. For me, I wasn't planning on pairing the two sets together anyway, and I assume that goes for most of us. Obviously the final decision is yours but that's just my two cents.

Regardless of whether or not the issue with Badwrench's set gets rectified, I still plan on using it with Alpine Winter, simply because it's more of a representation thing for me. I don't really care if the fonts end up not matching. Having the two sets on one board and having a tricolor keyset would be way cool, especially since they are meant to go together. I'd say stick with the Cherry font, man. :thumb:

When all is said and done, I plan on souping up my Infinity and getting a soft case made with the Alps mountain logo used in this set. :) I like the fact that the logo kind of represents both this and Badwrench's set. I like the sense of unity here. ^-^

I'll be buying this for sure, I actually have a use for alps caps now! If it drops could we get blanks for each row in a few colors?

I guess it really doesn't matter what happens with Badwrench, this set is what it is and Cherry fonts are probably the only way to go.

Just 1u keys for each row that match the colors. SP does single key blank child deals all the time.
