Title: [IC] Where can I get 100g+ springs
Post by: MOZ on Mon, 05 August 2013, 13:24:03
I would like to try some really stiff springs, the 80g I am using on the blues right now is great, but I would like to try some more stiffer ones.

Where can I source some 100g, 120g, 150g even? Anyone know where?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't find a better section. Fell free to move to correct section.

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46595.0 ? Buy these, take the springs out, and sell the switches? I think that should be right...

CPTbadass suggested using the ballpoint pen springs, I love heavy spring too but too lazy to desolder and mod my switches :S

Good question for Simple Questions I think.

There are springs that exist in the range you want but they're REALLY rare and you won't find a full board of them. Why not try a pen spring? That seems to be a popular answer for this question.

That is a good question. I'd be in for some also.

We should organize a group buy maybe? Providing that we can find the supplier for springs

So you're too busy to mod your board but you're volunteering to run a GB? Weird priorities :P

I have tried the spring from a number of pens now, however they lack consistency. I also feel that they will wear out much sooner. Some that I tried started to feel lighter after a week of abuse.

I'd be in, given we can find a supplier and most important thing is the springs have to be consistent.

Anyone know the source for the Originative springs, they seem to be quite well manufactured.

Buy some clears, take the springs and sell me the stems :)

If we're talking bottom out force yeah, clears are the heaviest AFAIK.

I don't find clears heavy  at all.

We need accurate data on the Cherry MX switch springs!

I've seen the thread, he didn't mention actual "source" of the heavy and light springs. Also, he didn't test the clears.

However, I say your spring swap thread, did yiu actually notice a considerable difference between the black and clear springs, if yes, how much?

He did test the clears alone actually. 90g is what he states, though the DT wiki says 100cN which could convert to 90g, not sure.

Quote directly from that article:

So far, I have measured 6 spring types:
Genuine Cherry MX "clear"

And I think that the clears are heavier than Blacks. It's probably the same feeling as the jump from stock Blue springs to 65g. I have no ACTUAL data though unlike rkinze. Might wanna read more carefully  ;)

1.0197 g = 1 cN

Is this for keyboards or another application? Not sure why you need a spring so stiff if it's for keyboards. If it's for keyboards, try merging two stock red/brown/blue spring inside the switch.

Yes, it is for keyboards.

I like them heavy, that is why. As for merging, interesting take. So one top of another or coiled between each other. HAVE.TO.TRY

It doesn't work this way. Adding 2 springs together doesn't simply add up the force. It's more like an exponential increase in tension. Try two blacks, and you'll see it'll be too heavy to be a usable switch. That's why I suggested combining two lightest springs. Last time I measured, I think I was able to almost get 300g with two heavy springs (forgot which ones exactly).

One on top of another won't work. You'll have to put them parallel with each other, then "merge" them so they look like 1 spring.

I think I just answered that on the post right above while you were typing.

One on top of the other is a super long spring, it won't work well. Inside of each other is what you'd want.

That you did sir. I can report results and see how this goes. I've also got 55, 62, and 65g I can try to see if those are any different.

Great you can do a complete test, with different springs combined. Please do report findings.

Merging two would be fine on most switches (if it doesn't bottom out the spring since you have twice the coils), but on a blue switch, the slight offset could snag the various parts inside a blue stem. Blues can be fickle this way. Test every switch for excess friction before you button it up.

Other alternatives:
If you know someone with a 3d printer, they could print off small spacer to up the pressure. Just a simple washer is all you need.
Not that they are for everyone, but Jailhouse Blues, with uncut green spring should get you between 95 and 115 grams activation force.
You could also use the "o-ring method" of Jailhouse Blues, but instead of the o-ring at the top making them Jailhouse Blues, put the o-ring in the bottom. I'm not sure how well this would work, it's just a theory.

I think grays have the highest of any stock switch. I'm pretty sure they are heavier than clears by a bit.

That being said, I could also use a few gray springs!

I tried two blacks and it was well over 250g. That thing was frightening. I then tried two 55g's and it appeared that any spring with a tight coil arrangement will not work, simply because the other spring gets in the way and it locks the switch at full upright. Oh well :/

There are 3 rare switches made by cherry that are in the range you want: MX Super Black (linear), MX Ultra Blue (clicky), and MX Super Grey (clicky) -> (I was actually the one who coined Super Grey long ago, though I have yet to acquire any of the Super/Ultra switches...). Ultra is the term designated for switches that are stiffer than Super, and Super is already stiffer than current production. There is probably a Super/Ultra tactile switch out there, but it has yet to be discovered.

It would be $5 for 100 spring, not bad at all!

28 at 110... You wouldn't want people who have fullsize boards to have to order 2 sets of 100.

Ed's math makes more sense.

Interest form up, need some suggestion about the google form...

Would migrate this to a separate thread if enough interest is shown!

I tried the dual 80g spring merge mod, and even my beast of a fingers had to bow down to the stiffness. Waaaaaaaaaay too stiff.

Haha! That reminds me of my friend's baby grand.

How did you get so many posts‽!? I swear that you were at 100 posts just a minute ago...

I've had 2 or 3 days like that.

It's so satisfying when all of the first ten threads in "keyboards" say "last post by Thimplum"

What KB are you using now?

At the moment I'm on an ASUS laptop, with a chiclet keyboard. It's actually not half bad for a laptop keyboard.

Ripster's spam was the only spam worth reading as he would actually integrate real help and knowledge into some of his posts.

If you read the old threads, you can see his posts when people quoted him.

Plus, he's banned on Deskthority, but his posts weren't deleted.

Or on OCN.

Or on reddit.

I have had confirmation from Originative, that we would need 500 orders for 100 springs a pack for any ONE weight over 100g, and it would cost $5-$6, the reason are that these springs will be made for the first time by his supplier.

That would be great, please do report your findings, and then maybe we can have a GB.

The dealer Originative use, has asked for much too high a MOQ.
