Title: [GB] Alps DCS Infinity modifier kit (Over)
Post by: Badwrench on Thu, 09 April 2015, 20:42:02
Ok guys and gals, here we go.  This is the official GB for the Alps DCS Infinity mods kit.

Colors for the kit are NN (black)/BX (Teal blue) and are done in double shot abs with a DCS profile so that it matches the majority of existing alps caps.  Font for the caps will be Cherry.
[attach=1]

The 2 logos for the kit are being generously donated by Nubbinator, njbair and jdcarpe.  An ultra huge thanks to you guys for the suggestions and donating to get these done.  I sincerely hope that they will be used again in the future for many more custom Alps keycap sets.   :thumb:

Nubbinator: 1.25x "Alps" mountain logo.  njbair: 1x "Alps" mountain logo.

jdcarpe:  "Glider" logo (minus the grids)

Pricing:  (current pledges to MOQ in parenthesis to the right of the pricing - I will be updating this every couple days unless there is no change)
I have added a small amount to the initial costs to cover shipping to me, but they still don't include the paypal and shipping from me.

Infinity Kit  (total pledges:  66) Final order #
25 sets                   $59.16 per set   (20)
50 sets                   $43.22 per set   (35) <---- we are here  :thumb:
75 sets                   $37.78 per set   (6)
100 sets                 $35.36 per set   (1)

Optional Modifier Kit   (total pledges:  54)  Final order number
25 sets                   $13.49 per set   (26) <---- we are here (only 4 more pledges to 25 or 50 MOQ to hit our goal)
50 sets                   $8.99 per set   (21)
75 sets                   $7.65 per set   (2)
100 sets                 $6.77 per set   (2)

Ideally, if we can get to the 50 MOQ tier, the pricing will get much better(Accomplished!).  The order form is done similar to a Massdrop style of entry for the GB so that we can track where we are on MOQ and help people that are on the fence in case they are worried about the buy not making the tier they want.  (Thanks to Mashby and enigcoder for the help).

Current status:
(6/11/15)  Preparing invoices
(6/19/15)  All invoices sent
(7/13/15)  Placed order with SP

And signed up.

And to maybe encourage people to sign up, I'll be making some Alps Dollies and maybe some other random Alps cap to randomly be given away starting at the 50 mark.  I'll make one cap for every multiple of ten, so 5 at 50, 6 at 60, 7 at 70, with a max of 10 at 100.

I think the wording was a tad confusing where the form calls it the Optional Infinity Kit. It's actually the non-Infinity keys that are optional.

Thanks

Because this is a traditional GB without using a site like PMK or Massdrop, there are really no rules about how it runs other than the honor system. So if 50 sets are accounted for, you're in. If fewer than 50 go, Badwrench could decide to give the 50+ people a chance to buy anyway, but he could also decide just to go forward with the fewer than 50 sets. Make sense?

Yep.  Hopefully we just hit 100 sets and no worries :d.  Still trying to wrap my head around using these on a Dell at101w.  I'm sure I can make it work somehow.  Alps boards are very confusing lol.

Why get in on this group buy? One word: freedom.

You're here reading this because you have an Alps board of some kind, or at the very least, some interest in Alps/Matias switches. You probably also have one or more Cherry MX boards as well. Those Cherry boards probably all have different keycaps. But what kind of keycaps do you have on your Alps board? My money says they're stock. Because a good set of aftermarket Alps caps is hard to come by.

Those aftermarket caps on your Cherry board represent one kind of freedom. Freedom to choose. Freedom to express yourself with your color choices, unique layouts and combinations. But ironically, that desire for freedom of expression has enslaved you to the Cherry MX world. Meanwhile, your Alps boards remain faithful and reliable, like a Model T Ford. And just like a Model T Ford, you can have any color as long as it's black.

NOT ANYMORE.

This group buy also comes in one color: BX Teal Blue. But behind that BX blue stands a legion of color choices waiting to heed the call--the call of Alps group buy success. Will you step up and do your part? Will you rise before the world of Cherry MX oppression, proudly fly the Alps flag and join us? Will you risk your wallet to open the doors to a wide world of switch and keycap options for generations to come?

If we succeed, we do so together. And we may emerge with thin wallets, but we emerge with SP DCS Alps modifier keycap sets in our hands. And then, they may take our stock keycaps away, but they will never take...

Also, nobeleese, no true ending date as of yet.  Next week I will start updating the op with the pledges from the order form so that we can gauge our progress.  My hope is to be under 45 days before I close the gb and start sending invoices.

I have one question, the caps support ALPS stabs or Cherry/Costar ? If I remember correctly SP had only Cherry stab mount.
I would love some for my ALPS 60% but as I'm going to use an ALPS plate with ALPS stabs I'm wondering if :)

There is something in the air throughout the keyboard community. No, it's not the smell of Krytox lube or polyurethane keycap resin.

It's a revolution.

Perhaps you think I'm speaking in hyperbole. Perhaps you don't think this buy is a big deal for the community. Well, to any who would debate me on this issue I say, can you type your arguments on BX Teal Blue modifier keys? Not without this group buy, you can't.

And meanwhile, we scroll through page after page of threads with titles like Post your Topre board and Post your keycaps. But where is the Post your custom Alps keycaps thread?

It's right here:
[attachimg=1]

This is the Age of Keycap Enlightenment, my friends. No more will we stand idly by while our Alps boards suffer a fate of obscurity. Together we rise, and together we will make this buy--and every future Alps keycap group buy--a revolutionary success!

Apologies in advance for the noobie questions.

1. What is the PayPal address supposed to be on the form?  Is that the email address associated with my PayPal account?

2. Does anybody have advice on how to get either stabilizer bars (I assume Matias is our best hope) or at least the appropriate wire to try to bend?  I have a V60MTS, so I'd need to get costar inserts and Cherry-style Alps thickness wires... I think?

Thanks!

On No. 2, if nothing else materializes, you might try a hobby shop.  There are some stiff wires that would probably make good stabilizer bars, that they sell for use in things like making handrails for model trains.

I think "piano wire" or "music wire" is the stuff you're looking for. Just need to find the right diameter, which is posted on the reddit wiki. I think it's just under 1mm.

Hey, you.

Yeah, you. The one who is reading this thread but hasn't joined the group buy yet. I need to ask you a question.

What are you waiting for?

Maybe you don't like custom keycaps? No, that can't be it. Maybe you already have BX teal blue Alps modifier keys in a curved profile with awesome custom legends? No, that's not it either. Maybe you can think of a better way to spend this kind of money? No, that's definitely not it. So what's holding you back? These BX teal blue Alps modifier keys in a curved profile with awesome custom legends are as nice as they come. There is literally no Alps board that couldn't benefit from this buy.

Maybe you're waiting for some big company to save the day. Maybe that will happen, or maybe not. You don't really have any say-so or control over that. But in this group buy you do have a voice. You do have control. You and I, and everyone in this buy has the power to shape the future landscape of the keyboard community. How many people do you think have said, "I like Alps switches but I don't want to buy a board that I can't get caps for," and end up getting Cherry MX switches instead? Don't you think a few glamour shots of decked-out Alps boards might sway their opinions? Then in turn, come time for the next Alps group buy, there are that many more Alps boards out in the wild.

It's time to break the vicious cycle!

So, for the stabs situation, would picking up some costar inserts and wire stabilizers from WASD be all that's needed to make these work with a V60MTS?  I currently have one (clicky) and another on preorder (quiet click).  Eagerly looking forward to getting some nicer caps on them.  :thumb:

In for a set of each. What's the time limit or end date to this GB?

Alright gonna reply to myself on this one.  I don't think this plan will work unless I can source some custom wires.  I tried fitting some 2x costar stabs from my other boards into the V60 plate mounts and they were just a tad bit too short.

Yeah, the alps wire is shorter and also a thinner gauge.  You will need to either bend your own in the smaller gauge, or wait and see if Matias gets a set done (there was talk of this happening).

Yes, ISO-mods with the stabilizer style Matias is pushing for the enter-key would be awesome IMO (I hope his will be the standard in the future), hopefully this will be possible in future buys if alps-kits get more popular. I'm joining since I can use most of the caps even tho I'm ISO user and I feel it is important to support this buy since it enhances the likelihood of future buys happening. If nothing else, it's for a good cause. :D

I can't remember if I've thrown my hat anywhere into this GB. Can someone who can tell, let me know?

I think the last I read, it was set to end at the end of the month ... when I've got basically no money. If it's set to end mid-month, I can afford this set, maybe.

Okay, hopefully my bad memory doesn't screw with your numbers.

I'll just say it publicly so I'm more likely to remember: in for one @ 50# price-point.

Maybe getting this will force me to complete my handwired 60% board, hmm?

There is no base set to compliment this set. The colours should work for pretty much any set out there however.
PBT as far as we know is not a possibility with DCS ALPS caps.
The alps mechanism uses a significant portion of the stem as part of its mechanism. That is why ALPS caps have their stem go inside the switch stem instead of vice versa like on MX. MX adapters can only be made possible by adding an mx stem on top of the existing alps stem thus greatly increasing the height.

Just ordered my first alps board granted it's an older apple board but either way that adds momentum for me to pick up a set of alps compatible caps. Looking forward to the outcome of this set and possibly most likely picking up a set. This hobby even tho just beginning for me can obviously be quite an expensive hobby. Or life. Great to see we've got some momentum here on this buy today. Assuming Hoff and evera signed up for one set each, added to the count on the home page, we are just 10 sets away from tipping at 50! It's an exciting time to be an Alps enthusiast, blazing a trail through the frontier of Alps keycap group buys. That is, after all, what we're doing--exploring new frontiers. Just like the settlers of old, eschewing the relative comforts of home, pushing westward, braving new challenges, risking their very lives all for the promise of a better tomorrow.

My friends, you and I are the Alps pioneers.

Many others have gone before us and fallen. Even some of us in this buy have attempted to settle the Alps GB wilderness, and we've come back with our tails between our legs. But we've nursed our wounds and bounced back, stronger than before. And we're focused--we've got our sights set on one thing.

One Thing. BX Teal Blue modifier key caps from Signature Plastics.

Some buys offer fancy alphas, color packs, layout adapters, and a whole bunch of other stuff. But all of those things add expense. This buy is about keeping it simple, the way the pioneers did things. One thing. You stick to that, and everything else don't mean squat.

[attachimg=1]

Will you join us on the frontier trail? Will you pack up your family and step out on faith with us? Because we need your help to give Alps enthusiasts everywhere a better tomorrow.

Thanks for all the hype njbair, I can't help but picture you like this:

I think when we hit 50 orders (25 and 50 moqs met), I will message those that entered for the higher MOQs to see if they want to join at 50 and then give the buy a couple days for stragglers.  Once I close it, I will start collecting (shipping will be included since I will know how much you will be ordering and where it will be going).

So, with Touch_It buying in at 50, we have effectively tipped the main kit at the "desired" level? This is great news! :D And with only 4 left (with Touch_It) for the optional kit, it's likely to also tip at 50, lovely. ;D

Exciting times! The historic first ever successful Alps keycap group buy is about to drop. The Infinity Keyboard is on Massdrop for another round. KBParadise are making their v60 and v80 with Alps switches. Matias is going to town with promises of PBT keysets in the not too distant future, and already has full ABS sets for sale.
It's a great time to be a fan of Alps keyswitches!

edit: Somebody ought to hype this again over on r/mk and DT. Someone who's good at that sort of thing... ;D

Colors for the kit are NN (black)/BX (Teal blue) and are done in double shot abs with a DCS profile so that it matches the majority of existing alps caps.  Font for the caps will be Cherry.

The 2 logos for the kit are being generously donated by Nubbinator, njbair and jdcarpe.  An ultra huge thanks to you guys for the suggestions and donating to get these done.  I sincerely hope that they will be used again in the future for many more custom Alps keycap sets.   :thumb:

Pricing:  (current pledges to MOQ in parenthesis to the right of the pricing - I will be updating this every couple days unless there is no change)
I have added a small amount to the initial costs to cover shipping to me, but they still don't include the paypal and shipping from me.

Infinity Kit  (total pledges:  58)  updated 5/24/15
25 sets                   $59.16 per set   (20)
50 sets                   $43.22 per set   (31)
75 sets                   $37.78 per set   (6)
100 sets                 $35.36 per set   (1)

Optional Modifier Kit   (total pledges:  50)  updated 5/24/15
25 sets                   $13.49 per set   (24)
50 sets                   $8.99 per set   (22)
75 sets                   $7.65 per set   (2)
100 sets                 $6.77 per set   (2)

Ideally, if we can get to the 50 MOQ tier, the pricing will get much better.  The order form is done similar to a Massdrop style of entry for the GB so that we can track where we are on MOQ and help people that are on the fence in case they are worried about the buy not making the tier they want.  (Thanks to Mashby and enigcoder for the help).

It's time for everyone here to think long and hard about committing to a second set at the 75 MOQ. It's not that much more money, and it will *not* be hard to sell later, even at a premium if you're into that sort of thing.

This is genuine Alps swag, folks. The stuff off legends. Think it over!

If you're worried about waiting, the Infinity round 3 will almost certainly take longer. I ordered mine towards the end of round 2 in March and still haven't gotten them.

I plan on using mine on a dell at101w (somehow).  Wish I had had the funds/time for a Hasu pcb.  Would be awesome. (If you like 60% boards)

I PM'd Hasu to see if I could sneak in a PCB on the recent buy, if he has room.  I have blues and greens that need 60% homes, and only standard ANSI looks good to me (I would be tempted by a HHKB Alps layout though...), so I was never sold on the Infinity. Keycap options keep me from the V60.  I've been using my fullsize blues all year, it takes up so much room but I don't know if I can easily go back to the MX in my Poker!

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking.  I was looking at my original drawings when I posted that.  This set includes both bottom rows.

Just a quick bump.  Only 4 more orders on the optional kit and we will reach our goals of 50 Moq for the buy.  At that point, I will close it and start invoicing.  So close!

This is great. I'm looking forward to these. In the meantime, I have a noob question:

I plan to use these on a V60 MTS-Q. I signed up for the full set including modifiers. What else will I need to buy to make this work? I saw some mention of stabilizers etc., but have no clue how that works. Could anyone please list the exact things I will need to buy, and ideally with a link to a reliable vendor? I will *really* appreciate it! I want to make sure I have everything ready for when I get the new keys!

Sincerely,
cdp

You can find some seriously cheap Alps boards. Check out the Dell AT101. They pop up in the classifieds every now and then.

I picked a Unitek with white alps from ebay for like $30 a couple months ago and I've been using it as my desktop daily driver since then! Unfortunately it suffers from big-ass enter disease so I'll have to pick up another when these caps drop  :thumb:

That's part of the appeal of getting into Alps for me. It's much cheaper to get into versus other switches.

Note the at101w will not be natively compatible with these due to stabilizers.  With that being said there is a way.  I plan on winging it once I get my caps.

This is pretty much the answer.  You will have to tinker with the stabilizer wire and get some costar inserts (wasd has them).  Not 100% a sure fit until someone tries.  I put the caps from my chicony (uses costar inserts) on my old at101 and with just a tiny bit of sanding to the bottom of the insert it looks like it will clear the plate at full switch depression.  I didnt have the wires to test the bend though.

We made it!  Our goal of 50 MOQ for each set has been met.  I will be pming those that submitted for the higher MOQs to see if they want in at the 50 price.  Give me a couple days to sort everything out and start putting out the invoices.

I will close this GB on Monday.

Once all the invoices have been paid, I will place the order.  From there I am going with the 4-6 week lead of SP plus another week of sorting/packing from me.  I will be mailing them as I pack and will go in order of time ordered.

No worries if you move during the wait, just keep me updated and I will make sure to change as needed.

Hello everyone, just a quick update.  I am currently waiting for the total shipping price on the caps from SP so that I can get the invoices together.

Would people prefer to be invoiced with the shipping from me to you now or would it be better to do a second invoice with the exact shipping charges (maybe just international?)

Thanks for all the hard work, badwrench. This is my first group buy experience, so I'm gonna pass on opining on that one (either works for me). I'm excited to think about alphanumerics now - which vintage keys will look best with these modifiers?? Time to buy a few alps boards to examine alphanumeric options?

I'm not really clear what you're asking here, but I think a single invoice would mean less money spent on PayPal fees, wouldn't it?

AEK II caps in white. Dell AT101 caps in beige or black. That's the beauty of these teal modifiers. They go with everything! They are the blue jeans of keycaps.

Should be the same amount as it is just a percentage.  I think what I am going to do is invoice the Domestic orders with the shipping since it is a known amount and do 2 invoices for international so that I can get exact rates.

I really wasn't going to go ahead with this one but njbair made me do it.

Some may call it hype, but I meant every word. And I'm positive you will not regret it.

The future of Alps keycap options is a little brighter thanks to you and everyone else who pitched in. That's the really great thing about getting in on the ground floor. I believe there will be many more successful Alps keycap buys to come in the months and years ahead, but there will never be another first successful Alps keycap group buy. You and I and everyone else here will always be able to look at these teal beauties and remember how we made this happen.

Badwrench, our fearless leader, you will be seeing "post your Alps" threads for years to come, and know that your perseverance made our shared success possible.

Thanks, also, to jdcarpe and nubbinator for contributing designs and funding for the custom legends. You guys made sure this keyset will stand unique well before someone pulls a keycap and inspects the stem and switch underneath.

And finally, thanks to everyone who helped promote the buy by sharing links on other sites, or helped keep the thread alive with your comments. Your efforts to spread awareness helped push this buy over the tipping point and beyond, even onward to a further price break at 50 units!

I hope everyone here appreciates the wonderful sense of community and cooperation manifested by this group buy (even more so than most). In a way, I'm sad it's almost over, because I love that sense of anticipation and I really enjoyed being a part of this thing. I mean it when I say that every time I look at these modifier keys I'm going to think back to this group buy and smile.

Hey everyone, a quick update.  We are down to 11 unpaid orders.  We had a couple people cancel, but they will not hurt the MOQ (especially since I am going to try to get them myself and sell them in the classifieds later for those that missed this - depending on my funds when all payments are in).

Yeah, so no excuses I haven't payed yet.  Right now I am 200 % drunk.  I will pay this weekend.  I said that last weekend, but stuff came up last week :(

Ok, we are now down to 7 outstanding payments.  I have sent out pms (and an email since their username that they submitted was not found).

I would like to get this thing ordered, so hit me up with a pm or email so we can figure out what we need to do, thanks.

If there are people dropping out and still spots available, I'd love to get in on this group buy for both the infinity and optional mod kit.  :D. I'm kinda upset I'm just learning about this now haha.

It probably depends on what other keys you want to combine these with. It will probably look great with most combinations.

ALPS ABS doubshot group buy on Massdrop. Black/Olivetti/Dolch

I'll be interested to see how it plays out.  The only boards you could use them on are vintage, Matias, Keyboard Paradise, or the Infinity, off the top of my head.  500 is asking a lot, considering the lukewarm interested we have seen so far.

What about the Ergodox? I realize all caps won't fit, but is there any way we can get people running an Ergodox GB?
I'm interested in the Infinity Ergodox redrop in September, and I'm planning on getting either Matias Click or Quiet, not sure which yet. I've already ordered the Olivette and Dolch in preparation.

aww. There are five or six in the wild. Somebody filed one of my aluminum plates out so they could make an ALPSdox. Then recommended no one else do that because wow was it time consuming.

But we've nailed down, I think, the shape of an ergodox-ALPS plate .dxf so, yeah it could happen.

Note that those Tai Hao sets are oem profile and this set is DCS (close to cherry height), so they will be off just a bit.

It is cool to see that they are at least on offer, but as said before, that 500 MOQ is out there.  This set was up for several months just to hit the 50 MOQ.

I think a huge part of it is pricing too.

I didn't take part in this for several reasons-- stabilizer compatibility, a poor stylistic match with the rest of the board I use, but most of all the price.  You're getting *some modifiers* and it costs as much as a cheap Kailh-switch board from China.

For the same price, the Tai Hao option gives you two complete 104-key sets.  A lot can be forgiven for that.  (personally-- I LIKE Tai Hao's typography better than SP's if you're not doing spherical caps)

I'm trying to decide if I should go for it or not... I know they won't fit right on my Tactile Pro, but I could potentially build a Leeku 3000 or GH-122 to fit them.

I hear where you are coming from about the price.  I worked for a long time to get the most compatibility for the least $$ for my set, but it is difficult when you are doing an uncommon mount.  There are too many different layouts (most with that damn big-ass enter) and then the fact that space bars are hard to come by.

How different is oem vs dcs.  would mixing the sets suck. Or is it negligible and I wouldn't notice too much.  Also begs the question of which set would look the best with blue modifiers.

I actually have a full set of Matias caps. I can probably lay out a row on their sides and take some caliper measurements. Then if someone can do something similar with any SP DCS set we can make comparisons that way.

I bought 3 sets to support the GB but I'm probably not going to use all 3.  If BadWrench is okay with transferring orders I'd be willing to let 1-2 go at cost!  No wait.  That's insane.  Cost + 1 dollar.

EDIT:  The extra dollar to be Paypal gifted to Badwrench.

EDIT 2:  2 of my extra sets and 1 of my extra add-on sets have been transferred.  I have one more add-on set if anyone bought only the base set and now wants the flexibility of using these mods on a *standard* 60%.

EDIT 3:  My add-on set has been transferred.  All I have now is one base set and and one add-on and anyone who wants them can wrest them from my cold, dead hands.

PMK site says Modern Selectric has a production delay something to do with it being SA, which this is not. So are we now before or after Modern Selectric?

I received an email from SP today:  Rough shipping date from them to me is 8/27.  Well within the 4-6 week lead time.  I will turn these around asap and will post tons of pictures and whatnot  :thumb:

My bday is three days later. Sounds like a pretty dope bday present to myself.  :p

How likely are these to match up reasonably well with the recent Massdrop full Alps sets? I think DCS is closer to Cherry profile, whereas the ones on Massdrop were OEM I think?

I also have some stock Matias caps which I'm hoping will work.

edit: Hey, does anybody have a plan for what to do about stabilizer wires? I'm happy to buy some wire and a wire-bender tool for myself, but if there's an easier option I'm all ears. Or am I the only one planning on putting these on a keyboard with Alps stabs?

Sorry for my naivete, as I don't have any real Alps experience (though tons of enthusiastic hopes!). I have an Infinity in the mail. Will the stabilizer wire that comes with the board work off the bat with the stabilizer mounts in this set (MX mount)? I've got no qualms with wire bending myself. I like being resourceful and taking to DIY if I can't find another solution or if DIY is more cost-effective/practical for me. :thumb:

What jdcarpe said is probably the solution.  I'm putting these on a Dell at101w and decided I'd yolo a solution when they are in my possession.  I'm definitely a hands on learner.

Yes, you are right (had to remove the cap and check). It is indeed apls-style, have mx-style on the spacebar, hence my confusion (only have two stabilized keys). Sorry about that.

You should be good to go right away - no tinkering required.  This set is primarily designed for the Infinity board with other applications being possible with figuring out your specific stabilizer (ie: Matias wires or making your own).

So Matias now has caps and stabs for sale on the or website. So my thinking is that stabs will work in one of two ways.

1) Use Matias stabs straight up
2) Use a combo of costar inserts and Matias stabilizer wire and housing but not the Matias inserts. The Costar inserts can be bought from WASDKeyboards I think.

I've not been able to test which of these methods works yet though

so... photos on Monday, Badwrench?

I took a closer look at the keycap profile photo I posted above (thx Jacobolus!) and it looks like most of the apparent difference in height between TaiHao and DCS is at the bottom edge of the keycap. The height from switch top to keycap top is very close to the same. So now I'm thinking these will work quite nicely on all the TaiHao-clad v80's and v60's out there.

Ok guys.  Good news and bad news.  Caps are here.  Unfortunately the font they used was exactly like the mockups.  I have already messaged SP but I don't expect to hear back from them until Monday.

The color is exactly how I pictured it, but the hard left capitalized fonts just bug me.

I'm sorry guys.  I feel like I have let everyone down on this.  I have gone back on my emails with SP and the font was originally talked about in the first emails, but after that, it was just the small changes we kept making to dial in the set.  Even the invoice has no mention of font, and I totally missed that (however it also has no mention of using the mockup font either).  I will talk with SP on Monday and see what can be done to fix this.  Again, I am super sorry - I didn't even want to post any pictures or even turn on GH.   :'(

Seconded. I just think this set is really cool in general, and a wonderful step forward to having more Alps sets produced! I will be rocking this on my Infinity with pride. :D I don't mind the legends at all. When Alpine Winter happens, these will definitely be mixed in!

It's totally on SP's fault though that the legends were not Cherry, but it's okay! Maybe they will remedy the issue, but if not, I do like the set as is. :)

In all honesty I can live with it. I'm happy to just get a set of modifierss that I'm not taking from two or three boards to get a decent color match. Most alps boards I've dug out of an ecycler have "big ass enter" and there goes the mods.....

I actually like the look of the legends, and I can't say they're any worse/better than cherry. I really hope you aren't still feeling bad about it, you've done a huge service for so many of us. I bet if you sent out the caps as they are now almost all of us wouldn't even know the legends were different, and the ones that would have noticed probably wouldn't mind. Out of all the things that could have gone wrong, this is very minor.  ;)

I'm interested to see what happens. This is SP's error, but it's an understandable one. If they own up to it, maybe they will offer a partial refund for those who want to keep them as-is. The rest they can probably replace and post for sale in the PMK store. That would make a lot of folks happy who were late to the party on this buy.

If your hypothesis lines up with what SP actually decides to do, I might just have to have both the original font and the Cherry font versions. Misprint from the very first Alps group buy...I can see that receiving collector attention one day. Then again, usually the things we think will be worth something never will, because everybody else thinks that too.

Haha, well there is THAT aspect of it too, sure. I just think it'd be cool to have though! A rarity, regardless of worth, especially if Cherry font'd corrected sets are offered on PMK. Definitely something that I want along with the corrected sets if that happens, BUT I'm trying not to get too far ahead of things now. I'm happy with what this is currently though.  :thumb:

I don't want to be too quick to place blame for this minor mishap, though.  If the exact font was not explicitly finalized and confirmed between both parties when the final order was placed, and not specified in the invoice, I don't think there is a clear blame.  These things happen.

Regardless, the font works for me as is.

Well, if the font was explicitly stated at the beginning and agreed upon and everything else was fine tuning, then yes, it is SPs fault.

It's been my experience, having spent 8 years in manufacturing, that any time a customer had an issue like this, the manufacturer takes the blame for pulling the trigger on production without clarifying the specifications, even if the prints/designs made no explicit mention of it. Putting legends on a keycap without asking which font to use is a lot like tapping a screw hole in a part without asking the thread size.

That said, any reasonable customer usually recognizes that they could have helped avoid the issue by stating things more clearly, and it's hard to find good vendors so you want to keep them happy with you as a customer. So they'll usually work with the vendor to find a solution that's fair to both parties. In our case, we don't want SP to change their policies or prices for community-run group buys, so we don't want to make unreasonable demands. It's a weird dynamic, though, because their only true customer here is Badwrench, but he also represents the entire community so SP should have an interest in keeping all of us happy.

I think if they offer a partial refund option for those who want to keep the set as-is, then sell the returns on PMK, that would be a fair compromise and nobody could really complain about that. They don't even have to reproduce every key--the custom logo legends and the GEEK HACK key are fine as-is.

So, after going back through all my emails it looks like I started with cherry font.  During all the fine tuning and changes a new email thread was started since the original was getting too long.  In the new thread I left out the font specification.  While in the newer thread the order was placed.  There was never any mention again of font and the invoice merely said Infinity alps cap set.  I see mistakes on both sides with me or SP never confirming font other than when this all first started.

Maybe I should ask for a mockup of some kind before finalizing my order. I have a feeling SP might do this from now on anyway.

Well, if the font was explicitly stated at the beginning and agreed upon and everything else was fine tuning, then yes, it is SPs fault.

This is a lot easier said than done (Nubbinator can confirm).  If you have the means though, I would.

It's fine. I'd prefer the cherry font, but if SP doesn't want to replace them, it's no big deal (for me a least).  ^-^

Ok everyone, it looks like SP is going to re-run the incorrect caps.  As soon as they know the production schedule, I will be notified.  I will update this thread as I get the info.  Sorry for the delay everyone.

Great news for people that only liked the cherry font.   My question (as I am just curious). They made the full run, and shipped them all to you? Or made all the sets and shipped 1 set to you? Or something similar?  Also what happens with the incorrectly made set/sets?

Thanks for being awesome!

Sort of.  Keep in mind that the custom keys (alps/slider/GH key/blanks) were all correct, so they will not be remade.  It will not quite be a complete second set.

Eh, close enough. My keyboards tend to be a little wonky because I type in dvorak and not many sets come with adapter kits. Some mismatched fonts will barely be noticed.

Shouldn't need to be.  I bought boxes that were a little large, and they still fit 2 sets of modifiers easily with bubble wrap.

Just make sure you pack them in plastic clamshells from GMK so they get that nice, worn-in tumbled look.

Yup.  You have the option for both.

Also, I just received a V60 courtesy of inanis, so I will be playing with the stabilizer wires to see what can be done to get them to work with costar inserts.  Looks like rhe width is fine, just need to play with the distance between the bends.  I will be picking up some wire on Tuesday and tinkering during the week.

I'll even buy an incorrect set, I'm sure there will be plenty floating out there. Just throwing my interest in either Cherry font or the black Sheep font out there.

Caps work on the V60.  I went looking through my old boards for one with the same gauge stabilizer wires and came across an old Compaq rubber dome.  The width of the bends was narrower, but that actually worked out better since upon straightening, the side arms ended up shorter (what I wanted), and it was just a matter of dialing in the angle to make sure that the switch can go through its stroke without binding.  The only wire I couldn't scavenge was the one for the right shift key.  The Matias uses a really long one that is almost as wide as the cap.  I ended up just modifying the stocker.  It is just a hair off on the right side and I plan on redoing it once I source some wire.

One thing of note.  The stock Matias caps have the stem slightly recessed while the SP caps have it pretty much flush.  Rows 1-3 are pretty similar in height, but row 4 (Z row) is a bit different.

Aside: is there anywhere one can find a 6u Alps spacebar (to make a perfect HHKB layout)? All the sets I see have 6.25u bars. :/

Or should I just hold out hope for the Alpine Winter set?

Waiting will be the only stock option, I think. Aside from buying some key caps from an Alps Infinity, but then those would be DSA. I bought a pair of 6u DCS MX-compatible spacebars in black from SP (as they have listed on PMK) and plan on doing a stem swap mod on one of them. Glad they come in two packs, just in case I mess up.  :-X

This right here is a huge part of why I'm doing Alpine Winter. You can barely find a 6U Cherry spacebar, let alone Alps.

Yeah, I have an Infinity set, but I got the non-hacker plate (idiot!). Not the end of the world because I would need a custom plate anyway (that doesn't have the non-HHKB switch cuts). Not sure if it has both spacebars amongst the caps, but I don't think I could live with DSA.

Thanks for the confirmation, though. Update us on how that stem swap mod goes!

Will do! I have a lot of fun ideas for my Infinity. Mine is indeed the hacker layout variety, which already seems uncommon, but even more so in the original bent case variety (which I fell in love at first sight). Took a bit of searching to finally find one! I think you guys will like what I have in mind, unless, again, I seriously screw up. Haha. Hoping to pull through and post my build log on here. The bent case infinity might be my favorite, but it's so minimalist, that I wanted to do something to make it just a little more unique and practical.

Yeah, the hacker layout seemed very unpopular despite being the most-voted layout for the Infinity. Obviously because of lack of support. I love the look of it though. Good luck finding an Alps plate that supports the HHKB bottom row! Yeah, hindsight sucks. :-\ Did you get yours with a case or like mine with the bent plate?

Indeed. And some aren't even compatible with the Infinity! When I first got my Infinity (which had MX Greens installed), I tried to use the 6u space bar that came with the Gateron blanks I have, but not only did it have an offset stem, but also incompatible spacing for the stabilizer stems as well.

Definitely not a good thing!

I do have a universal plate on the way (jdcarpe's design) that will support the row, but it will have extra holes. I'm sure I'll have to get a custom plate cut :/

I got a case since I was in the second MD round. Didn't think to look for a bent plate. They do look sharp.

Looking back, I would have gotten the standard bottom row layout if I had it to do over again. But as more and more of these things are being made, I think you'll start to see more 6U spacebar options appearing in the wild.

Just a quick heads up for everyone.  The replacements caps are in production and should be finished soon.  In the mean time, I stayed busy  ;D

Would it be possible once you get the latest modifiers to take a side by side picture of both to compare the differences?

Will do! I have a lot of fun ideas for my Infinity. Mine is indeed the hacker layout variety, which already seems uncommon, but even more so in the original bent case variety (which I fell in love at first sight). Took a bit of searching to finally find one!

I have a "spare" Hacker Layout Bent Plate for the Infinity if still inclined... BNIB... or anyone else for that matter.

PM me if interested. I would be more than happy to trade for a Flat plate.

In case you don't want to wait for a trade, BlueNalgene is getting ready to run a group buy for Alps PCBs and plates, and I think his plates will support the Infinity layout. IC thread here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=74524.0).

Also, if you need a full set of Alps caps, I'm running an IC for those as well (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=74783).

I just finished my build with a bent plate hacker layout case. I definitely wouldn't mind having a spare myself for a future project, perhaps with orange or green alps!

Many thanks to Badwrench for sending these to me early (I used the shipping costs I paid to have these sent early and so I'll be billed for shipping again once the Cherry font versions come around -- I requested this because I accidentally bricked my vintage blue alps board and desperately wanted to put its remains to use :P)

Looks good! Are those "feet" something custom that you added?

Thanks! Here are some more pictures to show some detail. The feet/non-slip pads are something I've added, yep! The stock bent case has no sort of gripping feet at all and skids around like crazy. It's practically a sled. Soooo I decided to add some silicone foam to the bottom to prevent that and because of the crazy surface area, it doesn't slip whatsoever. It's grippier than any keyboard I've used, haha. No way I can use a sleeve case with this, but thankfully I have a HHKB zip up case that fits it nicely.

Also notable is the acrylic sheet I used to cover the exposed area of the PCB on the bottom. It was mainly done because it was uncomfortable to grab from beneath, but it's good to protect all the exposed circuitry. I glued nuts down to the PCB on the other side (with loctite brush-on, loctite ultra gel, and E6000 [overkill?]) and used M2 mounting screws to secure it to the plate. If any of the nuts were to come unfastened, it'd be almost impossible to access the PCB without cutting/tearing/snapping the acrylic off, which wouldn't be good, so I made sure they'd stay put.

I originally had the idea of doing that bit from the thought of adding LED strips or a battery pack to make it wireless. :)

Excuse the fuzzy pics.  :-X The last pic shows the detail of the backside!

This is an unexpected but welcome surprise.

 Awesome, I'm in for both

Check it out, yo. Those are the Tai Hao doubleshots from Massdrop on the alphas. The legends are Cherry-ish enough that it completes the look quite nicely. The spacebar is the original DSA PBT spacebar from the Infinity kit. Not yet having a white/gray/beige spacebar is the main reason why I went with white on black for the alphas.

The profiles are slightly different, but nowhere near as big a deal as I had imagined.

This candy didn't stand a chance.

I'm so psyched that I can finally use my Infinity keyboard! Thanks so much, Badwrench, for blazing a trail forward to Alps goodness!!!

Those DSA blanks are brutal. It doesn't help that the Infinity plates are too thick for Alps switches to properly clip into place (this is not an issue with Cherry switches). When I first removed them I irreparably broke two Matias switches. Had to buy replacements from mechanicalkeyboards.com.

Well, now that you have a few that don't work, use one of those to mount all of these at least once.  Once you have mounted these once and pulled them off, the next time is much easier.  That first time basically takes any flashing or irregularities off the stem and allows you to mount and remove them much better.

Infinity is not a bad MX board, mechanically. But the Alps bit is kind of an afterthought. Firmware-wise, I'd rather have hasu's TMK over anything else, so Alps Party is a no-brainer.

OK, so I've ordered some filco/cherry stab inserts. What about the stab wires? I don't have a bunch of old keyboards lying around to scavenge from, and don't exactly want to risk damage to my original (alps style) wires by bending them up. Do I need to buy some wire and a wire-bender tool, or has someone got the hook-up for me?

What board is that? A v60?

Matias V60 QC

And to the other two people who asked, the keyboad is a Tai Hao Clicker 21

Keycaps are in Bulgarian language.

Sorry, I would recommend just being gentle.  Probably get some pressure straight up and then add a tiny wiggle from left to right while maintaining upward force.  Having just pulled the stem out of an mx switch, I know how you fell.

I broke two Matias switches when I first removed those DSA caps. I had to buy replacements from mechanicalkeyboards.com. From them on I decided I was not going to put them back on, and my Infinity sat unused until these babies arrived.

How was the typing feel on them, my good man? Was it worth it compared to ABS in your opinion? I'm still not sure how I feel about the difference, but it seems pretty negligible. I'm planning a blacked out alps keyboard soon, so I might hit you up for those caps!

Er, though Last Pilot's graphite replica buy will be something that might fit well too!

I like the feel of PBT but I don't like the DSA profile. If you can use the caps with their oddball sizes though, they're yours.

Just remind me around the time Alpine Winter ships and I'll throw them in with your order.

Infinity with HHKB layout in a Tex aluminum case. Dell AT101W alphas. I still need a HHKB sized spacebar to get the bottom row right. I might mod this one if I get the time. I'm also considering making some switch blockers or maybe just getting silver vinyl to clean it up.

Taobao Olivette alphas. No HHKB spacebar support so funky bottom row again.

Loving the mods though. This infinity is finally getting some use.  :thumb:

I didn't realize you could "fake" the 6.25 spacebar by using smaller mods like that. Pretty clever!

I would just use it as-is until Alpine Winter gets there.

Oh snap! I appreciate the generosity! Thanks, njbair.  I've never typed on DSA before, so it'd be an interesting experience to be sure. Aside from the 6u spacebar, everything else should fit. I'll chime in when Alpine Winter gets to that point.  :thumb:

Most definitely in on the Winter Alps set. Just trying to see if there were any modifier extras to go along with a Tai-Hao set while I wait for your ship to arrive in December. Looking to get an Infinity based Hasu powered Alps board up and typable before December. Thanks though.

They look awesome! Had some damage pulling the Massdrop DSA off (stems stuck in two switches, three switches pulled to the point of not working) but am getting these on this weekend. Thank you, Badwrench!

Pretty much why I'm in BlueNalgene's GB.  The Infinity is great but there's definitely room for improvement.
Wow. I wasn't aware of this. I was hoping the Infinity would get another drop so I could try Matias Alps, but this sounds like Infinity 2.0.
Infinity is not a bad MX board, mechanically. But the Alps bit is kind of an afterthought. Firmware-wise, I'd rather have hasu's TMK over anything else, so Alps Party is a no-brainer.
TMK's firmware is substantially more powerful than the stock Infinity fw. It's a shame they (for whatever reason) used an ARM chip on their board — I have nothing but nightmares trying to get TMK to work on it. Alps Party should relieve my suffering (and the boss HHKB plate).

Welp, I decided to finally put the Cherry mods on my Infinity, also with OG Dell AT101 thick PBT caps for that finishing touch. I have orange Alps in the board now as opposed to the blue Alps it used to have.

When Alpine Winter comes around, I'll be switching over to that thin ABS and blue alps again.

The matching profile definitely looks heaps better. I liked the AEK caps, but they just look a little off next to DCS.

It's not too difficult! For caps with Cherry stabilizer mounts, wire around half the height of typical Alps-stab wire works well. That's what I found after bending my own. For trial and error, I just used paperclips (and they work fine, haha) but using music wire is usually the way to do it, or rebending and snipping the old wire.

Oops, I meant to do that.  Sorry.  I will pick up some wire and do a photo tutorial soon.

This will be most appreciated by me. :)

Sorry for the lateness of this, but I don't get a lot of time to tinker.  Had a free morning so I thought I should get this knocked out.

Note that these measurements are only for the V60 as I don't have any other ansi alps boards.  The infinity is already set up for the costar stabs.

RT shift:  SP caps are 24mm center to center for the cruciform stabilizer mounts.  The V60 wire mounts are 40mm at the outside edge.  What this means is that the wire is going to have to be bent back on itself to make a trapezoid shape.  One thing I highly reccomned is the use of the larger costar stabs over the shorty ones.  This will give you a bit more wiggle room in the height of the wire.  I have mine at 14mm with the larger inserts, but with the smaller ones you will need to be at 13mm or you will get a little binding as the key bottoms out.
[attachimg=1]

For the other stabilized keys, just bend the sides to get the correct height of 13mm (this way you are good with either style of insert).  Make sure that you leave 14mm or more clearance for the switch between the tops tabs of the wire.

Also, is there anyone that has not received their set?  I have not had any return packages, but still would like to know, thanks.

Here is my board. I'm only using a few of the keycaps on my current alps-board. I'll build a HHKB-style later on where I will be using most of the keycaps ;D

Sorry for necro, but it's like 2 months later and I still didn't figure out exactly what kind of wire to buy for my Alps stabs. Any suggestions / links?
I guess I need to get something that's 19AWG == 20SWG guage, but what about the hardness? Also is it possible to get a sensible amount for just one keyboard? The smallest packages I'm finding online are like 6 foot long, and curled up meaning I would need to find a way to straighten it first....

Man, I've used paper clips before! As long as you get a solid wire, you should be okay. I know I saved a particular gauge of piano wire that was perfect for Costar and Alps stabs. I'll have to try and find it. Yeah, it's going to be hard to find the wire not curled up, maybe try searching for "rods" instead of wire.

EDIT: here's a good resource! (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65132.0)

I think you're going to want wire around 1mm. Let me measure my Costar and Alps wires for ya real quick.

Costar: 1.29 mm (this came off a vintage Alps NTC)

Alps: 1 mm

Thanks E3, I had a go with a paperclip a while back, but it didn't turn out so well. Guess I'll have another try...

Not a problem, good sir. I used paper clips on my FAME keyboard when I couldn't find any Alps wire (I now have a bunch more than I need, lol), and I got the wire to work fine! It's tricky though, especially if you're using a mix of Costar and Alps (I had to at first because the caps were ridiculously inconsistent and used both cruciform stab mounts and Alps), since the height for each is pretty different, and like Badwrench pointed out, some keys need specially bent wire because of the spacing of the mounts in relation to the stab clips in the plate (if we're talking about cruciform mount).

Good luck!

What diameter wire did you use for bending your Alps stab wires? 0.039 inch music wire?

Well, I used paper clips on my FAME as a temporary fix, and I had costar wire from my NTC to use with my Infinity. Regarding the fame: I ended up getting enough vintages that were salvaged for parts that I did not have to use any homemade wire. :P

However, I was going to use that exact diameter, and I think it'd work without a hitch.

I will go ahead and order some 0.039 inch wire and a Dubro bender. I'll be sure to let you all know how it works. :)

Yeah, that DuBro thing is like £50 over here, vs $10 USD. I'm not too keen on the 1000% transatlantic markup!

It's possible to use pliers, but instead of using the pliers alone to force the wire to bend, I'd use something with a 90 degree angle as a jig to bend the wires around with the pliers.

I figure I'll get something like this, if I ever graduate beyond paperclips

I just used a pair of hobby needle nose pliers for mine.  The wires I used were salveged out of an old rubber dome.

Holy ****, get this cap a doctor!

If you still have the stem, get some plastic weld epoxy or some strong super glue! If you don't have the stem, you can always transplant one from an old Alps key cap you don't care for (9u space bar anyone?).

Sadly the stem was so tight in the matias switch, it wouldn't even budge, i've got plenty of stem candidates like left over tao-hai's.

Sounds good! Yeah, an old Apple IIc I salvaged switches from has a broken cap and the stem was incredibly difficult to pop out. :(

What I use for the stem transplants is a nice pair of flush cutters to cut around the stem I want, then I use a dremel with a sanding wheel attachment to get down to the stem and get everything smooth, then I adjust the height manually from there until it's aligned with the other caps.

For setting the stem, I've used some plast-aid (http://www.amazon.com/Plast-aid-80400-Plastic-Repair-6-Ounce/dp/B004DFHSM6) pool repair stuff that bonds well with ABS, though you could use anything from super glue to epoxy putty. Just be careful and use a pair of tweezers to set the stem.

Something that isn't an instant bond might be a good idea so you can adjust it before it sets.

I just tried with some wire and a Du-Bro, works great. I also ordered an additional pin for my Du-Bro to bend Cherry wire (lots thicker).
