It's there special editions with their branding but they look pretty good.

That's actually what I prefer. I use a Filco tenkeyless for ergonomics, and have a separate numpad to the right of my mouse. I'm using a $15 ebay special with mx blacks, but I've got some browns on the way for a swap.

Hello everyone!

Does anyone know if these Ducky boards are as loud as Filcos when bottoming out keys? My first/only experience with mech boards was a Filco w/ cherry browns. I can remember disliking the loud "claks" the board made when I bottomed out keys while typing/gaming (and so did my wife). I currently own a Razer Blackwidow which I bought at Frys simply to try out Cherry Blues...love the thing. I agree with Manyak the thing is super quiet and Im thinking about keeping it; BUT, I've been itching to buy something different...with Cherry Blues.

I don't think it's fair to call a site out on such things. Besides, when you look at other large tech sites like Anandtech, Tom's Hardware, & TechPowerUP! there are far more ads (like in text ads) which are much more annoying.

To me Overclock.net seems much more classy of a place. Besides; there's no reason to hate on other people for what they have that you don't.

I don't see what is so special about this when compared to what KBL is trying to do with our keyboard? All they did was put one of the OCN keys in the ESC position and get ducky to custom print "Overclock.net" on the spacebar. I hardly call that a custom OCN keyboard.

It seems so. The "****ty" (even wannabe) forum beat GH to the punch in creating a "custom" keyboard. The "premier" English-language keyboard forum has squat, and we've been doing the keyboard thing for over 3 years. OCN's a newcomer.

I guess we have different definitions of custom-branding (or I consider varying degrees of it). The OCN board still uses the Ducky name and part numbers and all the associated specifications that go a long with that part number. If the GH keyboard ever works out, it will be "rebranded" but will do so, under custom specifications....Cherry Red/Clear keys, double-shot keycaps, plate/pcb mounted, tenkeyless, etc....which is why it may never happen. I will applaud OCN if they can get something like that done.

It's all business for OCN and Ducky though, the GH board is for us to have something cool and different with no profits in sight.

The $140 version is PBT. I decided that if I was going to buy one, I should buy the better version.

If anything, I might keep the wrist rest, and sell the keyboard to an OCNer. We'll see. Maybe the PBT version is better.

The PBT keycaps or the white on white ABS version doesn't have that problem, Ducky probably got a faulted mold for their stock spacebar.

The PBT gold lettering on black set should be fine (seems that's what's on that 9008 you bought), I bought separate set of them to put it on my RK-9000

Well consider this:

Awesome amazing custom keyboard that doesn't exist

vs.

Pretty good rebranded keyboard that does exist that's being released at a time when half the traditional mechanical keyboard brands/distributors are having trouble/not available.

Who cares if it isn't amazingly custom? If you can't get everyone to agree on what those custom specs should be (like GH hasn't been able to) then you won't get anywhere. But if you offer everyone the same basic package, and hits the major check boxes, then you're good to go.

And you have to admit, being able to order from OCN will be a lot more convenient than ordering from Taobao, and you can reverse the spacebar and put on the stock Ducky Esc key if you're a whiny ***** about it.

You can actually turn it off in your profile options, the same section where you choose wide or normal theme. Scroll all the way down, it's opt out of animated banners or something like that.

i figured that was the case. just being difficult. I actually think this a great deal. Whether OCN excites you or not, with the standard switch spacing, you can just swap the spacebar for a blank one. I'm starting to wonder why its so hard for the white ones to make it over here (the US) when there are SO MANY of them on Taobao.

Ducky's are not well-made and there are plenty of in-depth reviews in the Reviews section that highlight the many build issues. If Topre is a Porsche then Ducky is the GM of mechanical keyboards. When Ducky came out all kinds of people were annoyingly fanboing them up here, without even owning them (like Moogle and lmnop). The flurry of buying them was followed by an even larger flurry of selling them in the classifieds section.

That's why I'm really surprised itlnstln even bought one. He was here when all that went down!

I like my 1087, the build quality is quite shoddy compared to a Filco, but hey it's $40 cheaper than a Filco tenkeyless, AND the ducky comes with more features.

For what it's worth, I think what OCN is doing is great. If they wanted some cheap promotion, they could have easily just gone rubber dome, printed their name on it, sold it for $50, and people would have bought those too. At least they went mechanical offering two types of switches even. Getting a super high end mechanical keyboard customized with logos would have cost prohibitive I'm sure. Getting a specially made "one of a kind", original design OCN keyboard would also be out of the question. By the way, it's not rebranded like some here say. It obviously says Ducky on it.

Obook might be having a day off on Sunday. Just wait for Obook to come back with a quotation for you on the Noppoo with browns. Many people have said it to be the best keyboard they've ever tried with browns.

I'm not completely in agreement with the direction of this thread. I think $110 for a full keyboard with media keys, plate mounted switches, and ABS, standard stem placement, isn't that bad. Especially since there is no official distrobution channel, besides tankguys. Maybe the construction could be better, but if there is a serious quality issue that I am missing, please elaborate (I have read about the frame issues with the 1087).

For someone considering one of these keyboards (if not swayed by the OCN affiliation) what would you recommend in its place?

You don't have to look too hard on any computer hardware forum to hear a few reports. The most common one is they seem to die after a month or so on some people. I had one with a very stiff left shift. I'm sure that reseating it would have helped but thats not something that you should really have to do.

So... ignoring the childish comments and stereotypes about OCN members, why are these deemed bad keyboards by some in this thread?

Looking at the reviews of the Ducky 9008, it seems to be really solid. The only complaint I've seen is that the casing is a little thinner than a Filco's (the benchmark it seems). I'm not sure that I see what the problem is with build quality with these boards. You can even get PBT key caps for a modest amount more.

Perhaps someone will elaborate?

Yeah I realized that most comments where. and yours in particular didn't bother me.

I'm really happy that OCN has done this to help get the word about Mech. keyboards out to those who would otherwise be ignorant of or apathetic towards. OCN is a very large medium with a lot of different people with different interests, so its nice to think that it will really help. Hell if it wasn't for OCN I would have never even known about Mech. Keyboards in the first place. And it was Ripster and Phaedrus that convinced me to buy my first Mech. Keyboard despite my doubts. Now I'm shopping for my second after loving my XArmor U9BL, but realizing that the noise levels don't fit my lifestyle very well (late night gaming and not be single).

I would agree though, in the context of what I have read this seems to be completely different from the proposed GH keyboard.

I suppose that I should not have gotten as defensive as I was. OCN may not be my most frequented forum, but I enjoy it there and I enjoy the community (what I truly judge a forum on). I can easily say that the community on GH has impressed me, however.

I'm good with my purchase. From the accounts here, the PBT version was pretty good.

Never did I say I was purchasing the keyboard to spite you, specifically. It was in spite of the site as a whole, including myself. We have been the "premier" North American keyboard site for over three years, and after OCN jumps on our keyboard bandwagon, they have a keyboard with their logo on it. We don't even have a re-branded keyboard, let alone a fully customized one.

I am willing to help out a GeekHack keyboard if you want to collaborate on something, I'm just a busy person and haven't had the time or desire to work on something by myself.

Besides that, everyone knows that iMav lets me out of the dungeon on the weekends. I never post after about 4 p.m. on Friday. This was a three day weekend, too.

Just to make things clear. It has never been a goal of geekhack to make money nor to pimp product. Things like the cafepress store, the GH key group buys, etc are born out of member requests. So, I don't see another forum coming out with a rebranded keyboard as a poor reflection on GH whatsoever. More power to them!

My main goal in the keyboard deal I am working on is to get something I want (but I believe others will like quite a bit as well). They will be offered for sale to GHers because I will have lots left over due to the minimum order quantity.

Profits will go into the geekhack maintenance fund.

I'm actually colorblind, so it would look fine to me. I would just get strange stares from others (more than I already get by using a blank keyboard at work).

I looked them up on Taobao (thanks to that translation above!) and it looks like most are around 950 to 1000 Yuan... So, about $145 to 150 US. Not astronomical for a filco, but a lot for something still in it's home country. I hope PCHome or Armygroup pick them up.

EDIT: I just realized that someone should probably move this to its own thread... Since we are no longer talking about Ducky boards.

Got mine today. Nice keyboard. I bought the uber-deluxe, PBT, $140 version with the wrist rest and extra keys. No crooked spacebar and everything works like it should. I'm not sure if they are manufactured by Filco or not, but if not, they did a great job knocking them off. Without measuring, it feels about as heavy as the Filcos I used to have. The only disappointing part about it is that the keycaps are pad-printed, and not in the Filco sense, either. These are more like the old IBM white-on-black pad-printed style, so we'll have to see how long they stand the test of time. Otherwise, I am very impressed. The keycaps have a nice feel to them, but they are about as thick as the Filco caps, and you can definitely tell they are of a different plastic than the Filcos. I kinda like the Filco stabilizers better, but the Cherry-style stabilizers in the Ducky are pretty nice. Depending on what the Leopolds are like in a full-layout, I might get a Tiger/Keyboard of the Year/whatever edition for work and move the OCN version to the crib. Overall, I have to give this a thumbs-up.

The wrist rest is pretty nice, too, but it makes my palms sweaty. It could be a little taller, too.

It's definitely a surprising choice. It's like a "Buy One, Get One Free" offer. Buy the PBT, and get an Otaku version free (once you wear the printing off). I contacted imsto to see if there were any 108-key, engraved sets available. Otherwise, it's a great keyboard so far. We'll see how I like it after a week's worth of use.

True, but I would make a couple of points about this:

The way they did the pad-printing sucks. It's not even as durable (in theory, I just got the 'board) as the method used by MS and Logitech, let alone Filco.
Why go out of your way to include premium key caps and use non-premium legending?
Myself and others do not mind the "Otaku" look to an extent, but sometimes it's handy when things like needing to type in (good) passwords since there is no on-screen confirmation of keystrokes.

All that said, minus the legending of the key caps, I have absolutely no problem recommending the DK-9008. It's a solid 'board that, in my mind, is every bit as good as a Filco and, in some ways, better. Perhaps some of the other models have QA issues, but I am very happy typing on the one I have.

Technically, you could call it "lasered with infill," but it's not like the Cherrys that are more "engraved" and filled in.

I was a little shocked at how easy the printing came off the Esc key. So far, I haven't seen any evidence of more wear; I'm hoping it stays that way, I actually like the khaki/black look. If I were to do a double-shot order, I would consider a khaki/black combo. If I wasn't so swamped at work these days, I would show these whipper-snappers how to set up a GO and get it shipped.

The F9-F11 keys double up as extra function keys, can't remember which is which OTOH, but basically the LEDs indicate when extra functions such as...

Windows key lock
Windows key, Alt swap (for Mac users)
Ctrl key, shift swap (for some Linux nutjobs)

... are enabled

Just some numbers you might be interested in.

The first batch of OCN keyboards was 240. We sold ~190, gave away ~50 in contests, had one defective (bad switch), and one return.

Current batch is selling excellently as well.

We broke even or just above on a per-keyboard basis. Overall a loss counting the ones given away. OCN doesn't make money off its branded products, it makes money on advertising.

I'd bet the keyboards are basically written off in the OCN advertising budget, probably a noticeable loss is taken. Notice people at other forums mention OCN when people ask about getting a Ducky? Pretty cheap compared to random website ads I bet, and a much better site visit return.

For the record, the California gig is with a different company. Have to wait a couple weeks to see if it comes through though.

I've thought about proposing mechanical keyboards as a new product for them, since they have established global distribution channels, which no-one else in the market but Razer can say. But I doubt they'd go for it. A shame too, I thought up a business model and marketing stratergy and everything.
