Title: [OTD] Updated Wiki
Post by: notflipperdan420 on Sat, 16 March 2019, 17:44:01
Hi Geekhack.

It's been too long since the Deskthority OTD wiki has gone without an update.

With the growing interest in OTD boards within the community, I thought it'd be nice to make an updated wiki people can refer to and check years from now.

I'll be updating this thread every few days / weeks with a new board, so stay tuned.

356L

The first in the OTD lineup is the 356L. Following in the footsteps of the DK Saver, it is one of the earliest Kustom keyboards to be made.

Made from German aluminum, the keyboard is a lot heavier than it looks, weighing in at approximately 1.5kg (3.3 Pounds) despite not being an angled case.

As the L in the name suggests, it is designed for use with Linear switches, but it's said that the 356L also goes well with MX Blues.

Being the oldest and first of the legendary OTD 356 series, it is one of the rarest and most sought after keyboards by collectors.

356N

Following the 356L is the 356N. The 356N wasn't limited in quantity like the previous 356L, but had far fewer participants at around 30 units total.

This was said to be due to the group buy date of the 356N being too close to that of the 356L. Therefore, not many people joined due to financial reasons and that makes the 356N the rarest OTD excluding prototypes and special editions.

And yes, the naming scheme is pretty much the same. The 356L is designed for use with Linear switches in mind, while the 356N is designed for Non Click (aka tactile) switches in mind.

You might be wondering how a board can be designed for a particular switch.

The designer Eungsam was very meticulous and prototyped every one of his boards multiple times (with his own money) until the boards were "perfect" by his high standards. Then provided those boards to the OTD community at almost no profit.

He used the same PCB material as that of OG Cherry boards (CEM-3) instead of the usual FR4 to replicate the feeling of OG Cherry boards into the 356N. Cherry PCBs are over 1.5T in thickness while the 356N's PCB is a very thin 1.2T to help the PCB flex more and allow for a better typing feel.

Eungsam also thought out the case design so there is space deliberately left over in the bottom of the case. This helps increase pleasant pinging sounds made by tactile switches. The 356N is also the first OTD (or first Kustom) to use a rubber band in between the PCB and plate to produce a "bouncy" typing feel while helping to reduce unpleasant sounds.

The main difference difference between the 356N and the 356N MK2, is the anodizing. Both have a "hairline" anodizing where you can see lines running across. However, the 356N has the "hairline" running vertically as opposed to the 356N MK2's horizontal "hairline".

356CL

Here we are at the legendary 356CL. The holy grail. The grandfather of all modern day Kustoms. It's the board that set the standard.

To say it has impacted modern day Kustom design is an understatement. It's the first Kustom ever to utilize a brass weight insert, and first Kustom ever to have an angled case design.

You don't see many boards nowadays that don't have an angled case design and or a brass weight, right?

The 356CL wasn't born that easily. Even after countless prototypes, there were many issues.

Most notably, due to an problem with the aluminum used for the case, the ano left streaks (lines) on what would be the top half of many 356CLs. These top cases would later become 356CL DGE, but more detail on that in my next post.

Eungsam with his high standards, remade all the top cases due to this issue. That is why there is such a big color difference between the top and bottom half of most CLs.

Groupbuy Date: June 2009

Layout: Winkeyless 84

Units Made: Around 90 ~ 120 units. (Some say 60 Gunmetal 30 Black, some say 90 Gunmetal, 30 Black)

Controller: Holtec 628A

Types of Plates Available: Aluminum (Red), Polycarbonate Half

Engraving: Yes

Connection Type: PS2

The reason I cut out The Cheat was

1. It's not considered an "OTD" board by many due to the fact that the groupbuy wasn't run by Eungsam (응삼), the designer of the 356 series, 456GT, and 360Corsa.

2. The guy who ran the groupbuy, Aqua (아꽈) has low key scammed and still hasn't shipped out all units while going afk.

3. Some additional info regarding The Cheat. Groupbuy was ran on November, 2010 and supports full NKRO. Color options were Red, Silver, and Black.

Yes, but the Koala is considered an "OTD" board by most, opposed to The Cheat. Also there is a lot more to talk about regarding the Koala.

The first boards made was actually prohibited to sell. Other boards have restriction on flipping (hence why bundles are so popular there) and selling outside of Korea. Only 360c was avail to the world.

I'm pretty sure the 356C was just a prototype version of the 356CL. I say this because it was originally revealed back in 2009 (http://www.otd.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=album&wr_id=3562&sca=&sfl=wr_subject%7C%7Cwr_content&stx=356c&page=16) in some photos from a meetup. Then some proper photos (http://www.otd.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=album&wr_id=3932&sca=&sfl=wr_subject%7C%7Cwr_content&stx=356c&page=16) were posted the next month by the 356 series creator eungsam/danville (check out his photos on OTD if you have the time, they're some of the best keyboard pics out there) (http://www.otd.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=album&sca=&sfl=mb_id,1&stx=danville). This precedes any images of the 356CL, but the design is clearly near-identical.

Bonus pic :

IIRC nasby has it, and it was an early 360C proto

bruh don't make me dig up the 356CL DGE posts

Thought some people may be interested in these. These are taken from the PDS section of OTD, which you need an account to access. For that reason I've uploaded them as PDFs/JPEGs. Originally posted by eungsam/danville.

The 356CL DGE manual should apply to 356CL/356.2/360c too - it's the guide I followed when I assembled my 360c years ago.

I knew he had a blog, but I didn't realise how much he'd posted there compared to on OTD (http://www.otd.kr/bbs/board.php?bo_table=album&sca=&sfl=mb_id,1&stx=pilmuk) :)) Looks like he had at least 5 DGEs at one point!

Bit of an odd one, but I couldn't think of anywhere else to post this.

A while back it came to my attention (shoutouts to yui for that) that OTD was nearing its expiry date (27th March). We immediately started worrying that eungsam wouldn't renew the domain, for all kinds of reasons. It'd been 4 years since the site's last renewal, and it's a total ghost town at this point. I also have reason to believe that eungsam is entirely separated from the hobby at this point. It also didn't instill confidence, knowing that the site had already gone down for a few months sometime last year. While OTD might be a ghost town, it's still one of the most important sources of keyboard information in my opinion. There are so many keyboards, both custom and vintage, that you won't find documentated anywhere else. And even beyond that - OTD is the origin of so many trends that we see in keyboards today. The members there, along with the members of kbdmania, were the true originators of so many things. If record of their existence were lost, it'd break my heart.

Now, eungsam did end up renewing it. He waited until the date of its expiry, but he did do it. It's good for another 3 years. So, for now at least, this was done in vain.

Before he did this though, while it was still a very real worry that the site would go down, I started working on a scraper. And I did complete it. I've now got the entirety of OTD on my hard drive, with the exception of some sections I can't access (OTD Studio, and marketplace posts that are restricted by writing power). All images have been downloaded, and every post/comment has been scraped into a database that could easily be reconstructed into a website, allowing for full search capabilities. If a time ever comes when OTD goes down, and I want to provide this to the public - I will of course do all I can to remove/censor any personal information or photos of individuals.

I wanted to post this here just to let everyone know: 95% of the site's been backed up, there's no need to ever worry about it disappearing. Maybe nobody cares anymore, but I wanted to post just in case somebody does. I know I still do.

P.S Korean forum software from the 00s can go **** itself. It was a legitimate nightmare to do the scrape :blank:

Hiya! Here's a pretty + rare picture to grab your attention:

-----

Some of you might've noticed that, while otd.kr is still online, only the homepage is accessible. Maybe it'll get fixed in the future, but it's been like this for some time now.

This combined with previous periods of downtime has brought me to the decision to release otd_archive to the public.

I've started with the two richest sections of the website:

Album (https://www.kbdarchive.org/otd_archive/album.php)
Freeboard (https://www.kbdarchive.org/otd_archive/board.php)

Other sections will follow when I have time (reconstructing these pages is a bit time-consuming), but these two boards contain 90%+ of the posts from the site. More than enough to start with, I think.

The webpages are stripped of links (except for Album and Freeboard on the sidebar), since they would lead nowhere, but I've retained almost all of the original design.

Most importantly, the search bars found at the bottom of Album and Freeboard are fully functioning, so please use them! (and also pray that I won't have to eat my words when my server crashes)

Oh, also, clicking usernames will show you all of their posts on the board you're currently browsing.

If you encounter any dead images there are two possible explanations:

I say all of this to say - if you find a post with dead images or a dead thumbnail on the main Album browse page please let me know. Send an email to the address found here. (https://www.kbdarchive.org/cherry/submit.html) Explain the problem, and include a link to the page in question.

Further to that, if you come across any other problems with the site, or any images that you think should be removed please contact me at the above link.

If anyone has any requests, e.g a new search option, do let me know too.

Lastly, before I go~

Absolutely amazing work Photekq! It is a shame that OTD is finally dead, but we are all very lucky to have you around to keep the legacy alive. Did you have any posts that stood out to you while going through and scraping the site? Would love to see what you may have dug up if anything.

Hiya! Here's a pretty + rare picture to grab your attention:

If you encounter any dead images there are two possible explanations:

  • I removed them on purpose. OTD was a very tight-knit community; members there often shared pictures of themselves, and of their family. I've done my best to remove all of the family photos and member's photos of their children, as I'm not sure how I feel about re-hosting such personal images. I've left some pictures of people - specifically pictures of the members themselves and keyboard meetups. If you have a different stance on this, I'd be open to hearing your thoughts - perhaps I'm overthinking, or perhaps I'm not thinking enough. I also might've missed some, since it's hard to manually filter through so many images without any oversight.
  • There's some ****ery going on. OTD was inconsistent when it came to handling images - some would have 'src="/folder/folder2/image.ext", others would have src="./etc", and rarely they would have src="otd.kr/etc". I've had to bodge this a bit, and I think I've handled all cases, but I could be wrong.

I say all of this to say - if you find a post with dead images or a dead thumbnail on the main Album browse page please let me know. Send an email to the address found here. (https://www.kbdarchive.org/cherry/submit.html) Explain the problem, and include a link to the page in question.

Thank you for preserving otd, I'm glad that most of otd is archived even if the website goes down forever.

Thanks to anyone who's commented or messaged me. I'm really happy to know that people will put the archive to good use other than just myself!

I've uploaded the files I used to do this task. This is only for learning purposes, or for people that were curious. Please don't use these yourself, even if OTD comes back online:

To be honest, while I have browsed most of OTD in the past.. I wasn't manually scraping this or anything, so I didn't have every page flash before my eyes.

I'll post some favourites here in the future, but for now I need a break from looking at OTD :p

That sad that we cant backup 100% of, i think we lost a lot of info of OTD Projects. That's gonna be great if someone can find contacts of Eungsam/Any moderation to renew the expiration date so we can back to past. I Still want to see an info about 356F. 356ES, 356LS and other boards.  :blank:
