Can DSL cables be throttled?
« on: Wed, 27 July 2022, 03:43:06 »
Hello, I have a weird internet package paying for 1200 mb/s.

But after clean restarts, I only get to 900 mb/s.

I know internet connections can be throttled but seems like a lot.

Should I downgrade to 1000 mb/s?

Thanks

didn't know dsl can go that high.

but most routers won't do 1200mb/s wan->lan throughput.

the network adapter also has to be 2.5gbe

Yes I see, I might as well just downgrade to 1000 mb/s, correct? The 1200 mb/s plan is a scam

Not necessarily scum but:
  • you may have shared bandwidth
  • you may have peek time slowdown
  • your speed measuring method may be inaccurate or different to the one your ISP uses
  • maximum nominal speed is pretty much always more that reality

DSL has issues with distance.

It's not a shared line like cable so you get what you get without the (local) slowdowns but the further you are from the nearest telco box the worse your signal will be. Downgrading to 1000 will likely end up with you only getting 800, that's the reality of DSL. It's a distance problem.

What you can do is have them check if your neighborhood is wired right. I had a telco box at the end of my driveway but the idiots who wired my track ran my lead to the other end of the block then back to that same box and then into my house. Removing this upped my speed by 30%.

Another thing to try and I've had this happen for myself and customers...
Downgrade, then complain you aren't getting even close to the rated speeds, if you catch the on-site tech and explain your speeds you can sometimes get them to bump your connection to the next level in hopes you get what you are actually paying for. Customer support will not do this for you but an on-site tech can sometimes be convinced to do it. This was the next option before they removed that pointless extension on mine, they still upped mine after and I ended up with an extra 10% more than I was paying for.
