A place to show my alps progression
« on: Sat, 15 July 2017, 21:31:56 »
Well as I'm new to the forum I'd like to just share what I have currently in progress(Restoring some ALPS boards). If this is in the wrong section please let me know :s

Yesterday I had received an order off eBay, it consisted of: 1x MCK-101 FT(serial is MCK101SX but model is MCK-101 FT?) 1x KB-5181 and 1x Unknown Packard Bell(Unfortunately later I found it to be rubber dome :S). When I had ordered these I didn't actually know what type of switches they had, I just crossed my fingers and hoped as they were in an estate sale and it seemed pretty obvious whoever let these go were collecting them. The eBay lister had multiple others listed and I snagged all 3 of these for $40 including shipping. These were the pictures I had received(Minus the Packard bell, I won't be covering that further).

So a little after I had won the bid I did a little research, I found that both these boards could have various different switches so I didn't bother with it much further. I wouldn't know until I opened them up. So I waited. I was pretty happy with what I found, in the KB-5181 I found Monterey Blues and In the MCK-101 Green Alps clones :thumb: I was pretty stoked. So after looking things over I decided to restore the KB-5181 and put the MCK-101 on the backburner until I find more caps for it. I'll be using a combination of caps from the MCK-101, an AEKII I had previously, and the KB-5181 to make the set. I'm super excited and am currently in the process of retr0brighting the case and washing all the keys. Throughout the time I'll upload more progress on the board but for now I'll post a little picture dump of what I've accomplished so far

Excellent clean-up job. SMK "Montereys" are very nice switches.

What are those green doubleshots?
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Thanks!

Those(still learning, but doubleshot are the grey/colored keycaps right? With the double layer within them?) are from the MCK-101. No idea if they are original to the board or not but they look amazing and are in awesome condition, I was pretty impressed. I think that entire board had doubleshot keys, I pulled everything but the letter keys(Not sure what the terminology is here, I'm talking about the keys included in a 40% minus the couple modifiers, you can see what I mean in the very last picture of my post) and put them on the KB-5181.

Got it together! Photo dump + video(The flash on my phone loves to show the slightest bit of yellowing. In person you can't see any of it. Unfortunately/fortunately I like my things clean, so i'll need to work on it some more. I also found out the enter key, both shifts, and the 0 key won't work on this board. I'm a little butthurt that I don't have this the way I had originally wanted but I'll fix it soon.):

Removed the AEKII letter keys. Not sure what I was thinking these doubleshots feel and look 100x better.

What are those green doubleshots?

Appears to be the green legend Alt keys for the Ortek MCK-101 board. Also blue legend Shifts and red legend Ctrls

Indeed, I had said that above. The entire board is using the keys from the MCK-101.

Well, It's been awhile.

Projects I am working on now:

H87a build with SKCM Brown Alps, commissioned "AKrylic" Orion case (still waiting on this), Hiney Alps PCB and WKL/TKL plate (I also grabbed an AEK plate and extra pcb to make a WKL AEK build at some point with these orange Alps). Also still waiting on some cool looking JP Macway keycaps.

*Not Alps* Alice build with stock west german vintage blacks from 1988, USB-C Project Keyboard pcb, and commissioned "AKrylic" Alice case(haven't even invoiced yet). Also grabbed a POM plate to try out when I eventually get a POM case that is compatible (all POM errthang)

UPDATE:

Finally got my case in from AKnyang. I am happy with the craftsmanship of this case minus a certain flaw (not really sure how I feel about it). The case I commissioned was a Frosted clear acrylic Orion case.
I'm using both SKCM Brown and SKCL Green Alps with a Hinney h87 alps pcb. Overall I am pleased with this build and am just really happy to get it done(ish). I still need about 4 keycaps lol (stepped caps, enter, \, backspace).

You can see in the pictures the issue (bubbles/seperation between the layers).
