[IC] SA Tundra Fade Base + Artisanal by Captus Keycaps
« on: Thu, 28 January 2021, 13:12:33 »

We are thrilled to announce one of our very first keysets, Tundra, which we have been working on for a while now!
This set was inspired by tundra biomes, notably the Tarfala Valley in Sweden, where you can find white mountaintops, goldish and dark brown soil, and vivid green plants rich in chlorophyll.
The release features two sets: A base set with ANSI, ISO, numpad, and a deep gold anodized aluminum artisanal keycap, which will also be available separately.
We decided to go with the SA profile, as it's a smooth, robust, rounded profile, perfect for the vision we set out for this release.

About us:

We are a small company composed of keyboard enthusiasts and folks who work in industrial design.
Our goal is to experiment with various manufacturing techniques on different types of Aluminium, PBT/ABS plastic sublimation and dyeing procedures in order to bring unique,
one-of-a-kind keycap ideas to life. The brand aesthetic we are looking to build is of functionality, minimalism and designs narrated by a strong foundation of thought and story.

Can you let me know what color each level of the gradient is?

SP will probably ask for that also.

I'm assuming SP because Maxkey hated us using white for SA Jadeite (and the quotes we got backed showed).

Most of the manufacturing process will be accomplished in-house!

Do you have Pantone or RAL colors, I can't do anything with hex codes.

I don't know a single manufacturer that can color match based off of hex codes.

Update: We have asked for clarification, and Pantone colors are not going to be needed dye-sublimation manufacturing (otherwise known as thermal sublimation).

Unless you have those values printed acurately you'll still struggle to colour match them to your renders, or know if your manufacturer is being acurate, thats why standards like Pantone and Ral exist. It's true they're not needed to convay the information to the printer, but make sure the information your convaying is acurate to the previews you're displaying, you can't convert hex to cmyk and call it done.

Thank you for the feedback! The colors are originally CMYK, because the designs were finalized in AI, the renders are however RGB, because render engine works better with that. We will pay more attention to accuracy in the future.

The RGB -> CMYK thing is really minor, to be honest.  That's not the problem.  The problem is that even though the ink will output according to a CMYK rubric, the actual caps themselves will not necessarily actually match that color once the sublimation is complete.

The base white plastic of the keycap is likely to alter the final output.  In other words, you won't be able to verify that the result of the sublimation is actually correct.  The ink might be right, but the plastic combined with the ink may not be.

What you need instead of CMYK colors is a list of Pantone colors that approximate that gradient, so that each step in the process can determine what blend of ink, combined with the plastic, will yield the color you ultimately want.  In all likelihood, in order to compensate for the dye sublimation and the base plastic color, the CMYK output of the printing mechanism will have to *differ* from the CMYK approximations of the final cap colors.

TL;DR:
Pick Pantones (or RAL colors) for each step in your gradient.  Keep them all in the same family (Uncoated / Coated).  Then you will have a definite physical standard to work against rather than an ink standard.  And you'll be able to verify that the final output caps actually yield that intended color.

I love the concept of this set, but I can't help be a little bit thrown off by the brown bottom row.  I would prefer more green and white options on the bottom row too.
