[crowd sourcing] open source laptop: Novena
« on: Tue, 06 May 2014, 14:29:54 »
So, while trying to search for the buffalo keyboard (similar but different from the Atreus ... anyone know what I was looking for?) I found this:
the Novena computer platform, emphasizing the certainty that what you expect to have in your lap, is what actually arrived.

Also, it's a laptop, albeit a $2K netbook that could run WinCE, but will probably come with linux. Not sure, but considering the "if you cant hack it you dont own it" philosophy, I doubt the resulting forums will have much sympathy for folks who install any closed-source OS.

They've met their goals now that I've found them ... and I'm considering buying a board but probably won't. Still, the idea is fascinating to me ... Imagine something like the Ergodox (built by a dozen vendors), but it's a full computer.

Cool that a project such as this exists, but it's WAY too expensive.

That's the problem with doing product development outside a large corp. If you can't expect production runs in the 6-7 figures, you have to spreading the R&D out over the initial production run. And R&D is expensive.
