Originative: Vendor Review
« on: Mon, 28 April 2014, 20:14:14 »
Vendor subforums are a privilege granted to select vendors to advertise on geekhack, post news updates about their upcoming goods, and provide customer support by answering questions and resolving transaction issues.  Vendor subforums provide free advertisement space, and as such, vendors are expected to give something in return to the community through investing some reasonable amount of time and effort in maintaining their subforums and keeping some positive presence on our site.

Which brings us to the current state of Originative as a Commercial Vendor on geekhack.  Given Sherryton's absence from geekhack for many months and complete lack of customer support on his subforum, along with many outstanding orders that Originative is yet to fulfill, we are re-evaluating Originative's eligibility for keeping their own vendor subforum on geekhack.  We have concluded that Originative has been abusing their vendor privileges by using their free advertisement space but not putting in any effort in assisting our members with their orders, practically ignoring them, which is clear from multiple discussions on this subforum.  We are therefore taking the following actions against Originative:
  • The following users: "sherryton", "hazeluff", and "originative" have had their moderation privileges revoked
  • The Originative subforum has been converted to "Reply-only" format
  • Representatives from Originative have one week to respond here with any statements in their defense, after which we will decide whether to archive this subforum

Please feel free to respond to this announcement with your comments.

I agree. Something needed to be done or it's basically setting a precedence that vendors can do what they please with no recourse.

Even a simple "Hi guys, I'm too busy to post on GH right now but I'll respond as soon as I can" would go a long way towards alleviating the frustration.

As it is, we don't know whether an order will be fulfilled.  Recent orders were, older orders were not, or were incorrectly supplied and never rectified.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

He will most likely.

The bad part about this whole thing is that originative offers products that aren't really available anywhere else. So it puts their customers in a tough situation, risk buying from them, or not get hard to find items such as dolch keycaps, korean springs, and kmacs.

A comparable company would be EK, with topre keyboards, but they seem to have great support.

Speaking of that, why doesn't EK have a subforum? I've always wondered. Sorry if it's a "bad" question to ask...

I think there was some drama with Brian from EK at some point. People treated him poorly (ripster?), possibly when they quit selling filcos. I remember reading about it on the old geekhack. He had a presence at one point.

I'm not saying it was Ripster, or I could be totally wrong my memory seems pretty suspect these days. But Ripster did come to mind.

If memory serves (and if what I've been told is accurate), it was mostly just backlash because EK 1) stopped selling Filco and 2)didn't sell the FC700r. A lot of it did come from retspiR, but it wasn't just him.

Either way, GH and EK don't really have a good relationship, and I doubt that there's much we can do to get them a subforum if they don't want one.

He probably does, but since he was only given a week to respond, it is only fair to make sure he's aware. I'm not defending his actions or saying that he deserves anything from GH, but you can't have a trial and not invite the accused.

tbh it makes sense that they wouldn't notify him on external sites, since the trial is only contingent on how active he is on gh.

This is correct--we need our vendors to be actively checking their subforums and posting updates.  The situation is pretty clear already, and if a vendor is contacted directly and asked to post, it just goes around the problem of not posting voluntarily.

I disagree; the goal is to provide an ultimatum that either 1) forces him to take responsibility for his actions or 2) results in termination of his sub-forum privileges.

If the ultimatum is not actually delivered to him, a third outcome is possible, in which he never sees this thread and loses his sub-forum privileges because of that.

In my opinion, the decision to terminate his sub-forum should be based on whether he is willing to take responsibility for his actions, not whether he happens to read GH this week.

Now, I agree that he should be reading this forum. Moreover, considering the extent of his transgressions, I think it would have been completely justified to kick him off the forum without any kind of review process. But, now that one is happening, he should be notified of it. If he is not, then the decision hinges on something that is secondary to the real issue at stake, as I have pointed out. And, it seems a bit disingenuous to me to not even inform him.

Also, part of him taking responsibility includes fulfilling all the outstanding orders to GH members. If his forum is deleted, GH loses the main leverage it had to help out its members in this regard. All this to say that his activity on the forum is crucial, but I disagree that it's the main issue at stake. The main issue is him taking responsibility and paying his debts. And the best way to bring that about is to make sure he knows about this thread.

Anyway, I am biased. Originative has good products and I think everyone would win if he would shape up. To me it's the best outcome.

But I will not interfere, and I will say no more on the matter.

"geekhack.org", by which i mean the website, any owners, staff, or anyone else administratively or legally associated with it, are categorically not responsible for the actions of independent vendors who post messages, public or private, on geekhack.org

to all the brilliant friends who have left us, and all the students who climb on their shoulders.

It has now been one week since the statement of Originative's vendor review was posted, and given the current situation, we will proceed with the following punitive action against Originative:
  • Originative's vendor space on geekhack.org will be archived (hidden from view), so they will no longer get free advertisement on our domain
  • sherryton, originative, and hazeluff are no longer allowed to engage in any form of commercial activity on geekhack.org

This subforum will be archived in 24 hours.

Welp, bye.

Will originative be added to the list of banned vendors? Or just this subforum?

Considering neither operator is allowed to do commercial things, I'd say originative is banninated.

It was fun while it lasted - so much promise.

Sherry had the resources needed to make it successful, and the demand was there. The execution was just incredibly poor. Sherry dun goofed.

Would they ever get a chance again? I would really love for originative to get their act together and come back/be allowed back.

It technically *happened* with gmk dolch, like around june-ish (If I remember right..) of last year. It was like a miracle. But this time the fall out was worse so....expect nothing to come back

Yeah it was.  I got a few things from him before he went AWOL and now it would pay to be patient and wait for BunnyLake or Ivan to run a real Group Buy soon, consisting of thorough GMK goodness.

By the way Imsto is running his Group Buy BSP, pbt, key-set at this very moment.

I don't think we will miss out on any future key-sets coming out of Germany  :thumb: .

Oh well, I wasn't around back then so I don't know anything about that. :(

This is justified, but it's kind of bittersweet.
