Introduction and a few questions!
« on: Fri, 03 September 2010, 01:24:21 »
Hello,
Just wanted to drop in and say hello to everyone.  I have been lurking here for awhile (ever since I discovered I had an interest in mechanical keyboards), but haven't really had anything to contribute until now.

Little background... I work in a large hospital, parts of which are old, dusty, and full of ancient equipment...electronic, medical..you name it.
I have been looking around recently for any old keyboards laying on shelves, in cabinets, etc.   Unfortunately, not too long ago the hospital had a huge project called 'operation dump' with the goal of cleaning up of said 'dusty corners' deep in the bowels of the old hospital units.
Kicking myself... I remember about 6-7 years ago I couldn't swing a bat without hitting an old IBM keyboard in some units...

Anyway, I've been scouring, and recently came up with 2 relevant 'acquisitions'.
One was an ibm model M (yay!)... except it happened to be one of the few rubber dome models (boo).  Didn't get any pics of it..its a nice keyboard, I cleaned it up and I use it at work.. not bad for a rubber dome..

However, I also came up with this interesting keyboard..which at first wasn't sure if it was even mechanical... It feels like it was mechanical...but I didn't recognize the switch when I took the cap off...until I did the research on the model numbers...
It's a Hi-Tek RT101+ in great condition...found it dumped in the corner of a network closet.
I think you guys call these switches 'Space Invaders'.  Apt... :)
I don't know much about it, maybe you guys can enlighten me.
I haven't tested it (don't have an AT-ps2 adapter yet), but its in amazing condition..it was dusty but otherwise shows very little sign of use.  I'm guessing it was used as a terminal for an old router that got used maybe a handful of times and has been sitting in the closet for 15+ years.
It feels great to type on.. different than anything I've typed on before.  The keys are very quiet, but very tactile.

Anyway, here are the pics, enjoy

I will probably clean it up really well, and test it out and then maybe try to trade it for something else.  I really can't stand small backspace keys...drives me nuts.  So if anyone is interested in this thing, or want any other info, let me know.

Also, wanted to thank all you guys on this forum that contribute to this fine niche of nerdery.. I've learned a ton about keyboards here.
Thanks!

Scott
