[IC] Keyset Display Case - preliminary IC
« on: Mon, 28 October 2019, 07:16:52 »
Hello Geekhack,

I have here a very preliminary interest check for a keycap set display case. I am an industrial design student and I have come up with this potential product as part of one of my studio classes.

I found that the majority of enthusiasts have more keycap sets than keyboards, and also that in many cases keysets are stored in ziploc bags and hidden away. This is an odd gap between value and storage method, especially in the case of expensive and hyped sets. This discrepancy illustrates a gap in the market for a storage solution to contain and display sets that aren’t currently being used.

228959-0

This display case is intended to serve as both a storage solution and a display solution. It provides a replacement for GMK trays which hide the caps from view and can be flimsy, and has enough vertical space to hold SA keycaps, solving a problem that exists with JTK trays.

228961-1

It is quite easy to access the keycaps for mounting, with simple slide-out trays reminiscent of some jewelry storage solutions. The trays and the window are made of acrylic, laser cut and acrylic welded together, and the case is a painted wood.

228963-2

This case has 4 trays, which should provide enough space for fully kitted out keysets or two different base-kit-only keysets. Notice each tray has a dedicated spot for the ISO Enter, allowing both ANSI and ISO users to display a full 60% plus F-row set on the top tray.

228965-3

The case could be painted in colour to reflect the set it will hold.

228967-4

Thank you very much for reading. Please keep in mind that this design is very preliminary at this point - I am posting here in hope of receiving community feedback on the viability and desirability of this project, as well as feedback on aesthetics and functionality. If the interest is great I will begin working on manufacturing logistics, but at the moment I am looking for feedback and validation of the design.

I’m not sure if this is actually practical but it’s a cool idea

I agree this is a really cool idea though not practical because of the space that it eats up. People throw away their GMK trays/boxes and use ziplocks to save space.

Would get one if this happens tho  :thumb:

Would you consider the idea of making the trays parallel to the bottom surface? To maximize the space

I've always thought it was strange that something like this does not exist.  Granted it will be a niche product because it will take up quite a bit of real estate. But I'm going to be tracking this and if the price isn't too bad, I'm in.

The way I could be tempted by this would be if it had an option for trays that had columns for keycap separation, in addition to the rows. Then it could be used for artisans

This is definitely a good way to keep different keysets organized and still have a way to display them if you were so inclined.  I'd be interested to see how much this would cost.

Cost looks like it might end up being fairly prohibitive which is a shame - the idea is great, but to make it practical for the regular consumer I really do hope the price is manageable.

Maybe I'll start collecting keysets instead of keyboards  :))

Here's a practical way to use it for storage.

Most people use their keycaps, but not their numpad/accent/novelties

Make a smaller form factor case specifically for numpad+accessory caps

Maybe have a display on the top for the numpad and a drawer on the bottom for the extra keycaps. < I love this idea

Like some of the others have said, the idea is really cool and would love to get one for my self, since I hate stuffing keycaps away. But for me price is the issue as well.

Really cool, but I find the issue with these kind of things are usually the price. If they're like $50 each, then I think people would rather just buy more keycaps or boards. Might be worth it if we can hit $20-$30? This would be extra cool if they could slot on top of each other to be stackable.

Acrylic materials are very fragile. I suggest to assemble and sell them without processing international shipping.

Maybe for 1 extra set, but if you have 35 sets not on boards, this is going to take up a lot of space and cost a pretty penny.
F Keys belong on the left.
