[IC] Keycap and Switch Try Tour
« on: Sat, 02 February 2013, 14:27:27 »
THIS TOUR IS NOW LIVE, SIGN UP!

If you want to see the old OP, just hit the more button! ^__^

I'm starting a tour so that people can try out different keycap materials and switches. If you want to try mounted MX switches, go sign up for Hashbaz's Universal Switch Tester. The Mr. Interface Switch Try Bag has these switches as well as a MX Ghetto Green that tjcaustin is making for me (THANKS BRO :D). The tour also has the following caps:

  • Thin ABS (Thanks for the donation from Lastpilot!)
  • Thick ABS or Cherry Doubleshots (Thanks for the donation Mashby!)
  • Thin PBT (Thanks for the donation Mashby!)
  • Thick PBT (Thanks for the donation from Lastpilot!)
  • 2 Tipro relegendables (Thanks for the donation The_Beast!)
  • Zinc Cap (Thanks unnamed friend!)
  • Wario PBT Doubleshot
  • Thin ABS in DSA profile (Thanks for the donation ray4jc!)
  • 4 POM Caps (Thanks for the donation Takaki!)
  • 4 Thin DSA caps (Thanks for the donation ray4jc!)

Details can be found here.

This tour will be starting in June 2013. I am hoping to get 5-10 people interested in the tour. Shipping work the same as Akimbo's previous/current tours. Shipping will be in the form of a USPS Small Flat Rate Box, which costs $5.85 to mail.

The Tipro is from The_Beast. Thanks so much to everyone who donated!

More
So I've seen switch testers floating around GH. Hashbaz has one and Mr. Interface on DT has a whole subforum on them. Switches define how a board might feel and decide whether or not you buy.

But I think there's another keyboard element that is missing: The keycaps. How many times have you seen the debates on whether or not Signature Plastics' doubleshot ABS caps measure up to the Cherry doubleshots. Or how Imsto's thick PBTs are better than normal PBT caps. Maybe you want to try and PBT or POM cap but don't feel like paying money for something you're unsure about. Maybe it seems silly to buy a SINGLE cap just to try a new material out. Ever want to see how "Cherry-like" SP's caps really are?

I guess my point is, if we have switch testers, maybe we can send around a cap tester. We could help answer all these questions.

We could mount a bunch of different caps on a tenkeypad, board, or maybe even these. I'm talking like POM, PBT, ABS, Zinc, and anything else I'm missing. And then maybe stepped caps locks, scoops, nips, center dots, scoops/nips as well.

I apologize if this is a bit wordy, I like to write lol. But would anyone want to sign up for this?

I would definitely be interested in this.

It would seem that we could send a bag with alpha keys and spacebar of each set type and a key puller so that people could try them out on their own board. Package should be lighter than a whole keyboard, so it should make shipping easier.

1. WASD Keys
2. SP Double Shots
3. IMSTO PBT Thick
4. Original Cherry Double Shots
5. GMK Double Shots

Any other series that should be included?

This is a cool idea.  I can probably rustle up some spare SP, WASD, and Cherry caps.

My signature hasn't changed since 2012. I should really update it.

Do not forget about Devlin double shots and Devlin's PBT (blank?) as well.  Devlin's keycaps are real nice.  Some other mentions are QWERKeys.

Too risky.  Would most likely get stolen or something.  I'd be down for this, especially if it had POM.

Oh cool, I didn't see any responses so i figured this was a bad idea but I'm a encouraged now.  :D

Is there a preference as to how exactly we want to distribute the caps? Do we like a switchbag type tour where the caps are loose and you mount them to your own board? Or would we rather get some tenkeypads (To cut down on shipping costs?) and share them like that?

Mashby, I think DT's wiki has examples of engraved vs laser etched. I'll hunt down the link later.

Yeah, I know the difference between those types of printing, I was more referring to "SP DS PBT DCS". I don't know that I've ever seen any and I think it'd be nice to have pictures to what's included in the tour package.

Just a thought.

If we can get enough interest (Say 10 people) who'd like to do this, I'll start gathering caps for the tester. I can then show pictures of what will be included before I send it out. Wish I knew how to start a poll...

So here's some caps I'd be willing to add to this tour. I'm thinking I'm going to make it a bag but I'm not sure how I'd organize the keys so that people know what's what. Also, I think I'm going to keep this to CONUS and maybe Canada. That international shipping hike is a bit pricey.

Keys from left to right:
1) ABS [Pink ESC]
2) ABS with side printing
3 PBT [2nd gen 420 and GH cap]
4) Polycarbonate and ABS [GH January Pack]
5) ABS [CCnG Stepped Caps Lock]

I think the side printing vs the top printed ABS feel a bit different. And the stepped caps lock key feels different just because it has the cap. It's made of ABS. The GH January cap has the following composition: Second Shot/Clear Part = Polycarbonate; First Shot/Legend = ABS.

If we have enough interested people, I'll  start asking for keys to borrow (you'll get them back when this is done) and for a preference on a keycap bag vs a cap-mount such as a tenkeypad.

However, it doesn't work on a PS2 connector. It's some weird Tipro interface. Plate mount blacks BTW

Kawa, I'll make a BOM if people tell me what they'd like. I know mashby is looking for different profiles as well as the keys I included.

To anyone that is afraid of letting me borrow you stuff: I will pay for shipping both ways and pay you back if anything happens to the caps. I know I'm very new so if there are reservations in me running this, perhaps I can get someone else to host it. I'll still bear the costs.

Let me know what would work best for everyone  :D

I also might be able to add a Mr. Interface Switch Try bag to this tour. For anyone who doesn't know, read up about it here. However, instead of the blue alps, I'll have a white monterey and an omron instead.

Oh and a zinc cap in addition to the switches/caps.

The only issue is that I have to buy it. I'm not trying to be cheap, I'm not just sure what to do with it after the tours are over. If we get enough interest, maybe we can spread the cost around and I can offer something for the money.

And by eventually, you mean in a couple of years. For the swtich tour, I'm predicting about 2-months total for 10 people to be able to try the board for ~3 days.

Also, I compiled all the suggestions into a new list. Please see below and let me know what corrections need to be made.

One More Thing

Is the idea to include only the 37-key alpha set, or do we want to include the spacebar and maybe the shift keys too?

I'm assuming that the idea is for people to try them and do some typing with them and get a sense of what they feel like. Personally, getting a couple of keys doesn't really provide me with a true feel. It's only when I type on them for a few minutes that I have a true sense of what they're like.

I'm worried about how much the shipping might be with like 10-20 alpha sets and the switches and the single caps.

But more importantly, I'm worried about information overload. Can you imagine having like all these sets and switches? It'd be like Christmas until you realized you had a set amount of time. I originally thought I'd just provide a few caps of each profile just for brevity's sake.

Not that i need this by now, but a good idea for sure. For a tester tour I would just send out like one of each. Sure it is harder to get a feeling for it, but then some are pretty drastic like abs vs pbt vs pom. Profiles do need a bit more than one to get a sense of typing on it. Maybe set up a rental service or something for full sets?
Also if you happen to need something, I wouldn't mind putting out some things on loan either.

I think I'm going to leave mashby's list of profiles for another day. I want to concentrate on different materials (ABS, POM, PBT, etc) and that switch bag.

Mashby, if you want to help me coordinate another IC/Tour of keyset profiles, PM me. That'd be another cool project to work on.

Ok, I'm sorry I've been stalling on this but I've been really busy at work and with some other projects. I'm going to borrow Mashby's list and post it below. I think I'm going to have 4 of each keycap type from the list above. If I can get the donations that were posted earlier in this thread, you'll get to try out the MKC and WASD keycap pullers.

I also I got my hands on a Mr. Interface switch bag. I am planning on sending out a package of as many of these caps as I can find and the Mr. Interface switch bag. I have a few relatively big boxes that we can use. Hopefully it won't cost too much to ship with USPS. I'll check into the pricing.

I think the way I want this to work is that I'll ship out the box to the first person, then the first person is responsible for paying to ship for the next person. I think that's how the other tours are conducted? (I'm not sure) But other than that, there will be no sign up costs. If you would like to donate to help me offset the cost of the Switch Bag, I'd be very grateful. I paid $55 and anything I might get more than that will be donated to GH. (No I'm not trying to guilt anyone, just saying.) I think eventually, when all the tours are done and/or the interest dies down, I'd like to see the switches donated to mkawa's force vs displacement tester or maybe just donated to GH as is.

Anyways, the next step will be I'll get all the caps in that I can and update the above list with what has been added to the box. I want to write a review on all the caps and switches as well. While I'm writing, I'll be using that time to gather interest and hopefully make a new thread like the Dell AT101 tour if we can get at least 5 interested people. I'd then like to have the tour be done in waves like Hashbaz's Ultimate Switch Tester.

If there are any questions or concerns, please let me know. And if you have any other suggestions for caps that can be added to the list, tell me and I'll update the list.

I compiled all the suggestions into a new list. Please see below and let me know what corrections need to be made.

So now that I've cleared up some free time. I have some caps coming. I'm attempting to get a hold of the following (there will be 4 caps of the following types):

  • SP or thin ABS
  • Cherry or thick/doubleshot ABS
  • Thin PBT
  • Thick PBT
  • POM caps or any sort

I'll also have 1 zinc cap for this tour. Along with the caps I still have the Switch Try Bag. It should all fit in the small flat rate box.

My question for anyone who can help me out is that there is a lot of interest in green switches. Can anyone donate a switch to this cause?

How about splitting the sets up a bit?

That way people can get in only on the sets they're interested in testing (and shipping) and perhaps they can start/end with the person who has the set.

Also less of a wait for trying something new as the whole kaboodle won't be stuck on 1 person at a time.

I'd be willing to lend one of those number pads you you. However, you wouldn't be able to type on it, since it's not programmed.

It has blacks

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of free time and I don't want to spend a lot of time chasing multiple people to ask them if they got the caps and ask them to ship it if they're late. It'd be easier imo to keep the whole kit in one place. Plus I think the Switch Try Bag is something people want to play with and that can only be in one spot at once.

Beast can you PM me? I think I'd like this.

Add me to the list bro!

A proper thread with a listing of people, items, and other info will go up when I get all the stuff I'd like in. Right now I have the Tipro and Switch Try bag. Waiting on the caps and then I'll post the thread with all the info. Sorry this has been a little disorganized but I've never don't something like this before. Just bear with me for a little longer ^__^

I'm not sure if you need them, but I've got the stock Poker set if that would help.

I'm not familiar with the stock Poker caps. Are they thin ABS caps?
