[IC] Headphone stands- 1st design idea up, need feedback
« on: Fri, 09 August 2013, 03:42:11 »
I have been gagging to get some headphone stands created for a while, now is the time for me to do it I think, My work is expanding and I want to go into different fields and audio has always been a passion of mine.

I am looking to make some from acrylic, wood and brass/ aluminium in a range of prices. I can do flat pack acrylic kits and you can piece them together, this will keep cost down and postage costs. I can do custom wood ones and high end brass and ally ones.

I have TONS of ideas floating around. I will post some pics of my ideas and some sketches later.

If you are interested, let me know below.

Thanks!

I'd be interested in a geekhack themed stand (orange / grey + logo or something like that).

It should be rather cheap though, nothing extra fancy. I mean I don't want to pay more for the stand than for the headphones themselves ;)

Oh, I'm definitely in for an inexpensive acrylic kit.

I like the idea of bright colors, closed in by opaque black, much like the geekhack theme, so I'm down for that. Though, I'd be happy with just about any color and black. Keeping an eye on this one.

i would be in for a stand! Depends mostly on the shipping cost, might not be so cost effective getting one into aus.

Oh, I've just bought a coat hook for 23p and attached it to the side of my desk  :(

If these are nice I'd still possibly pick one up. I quite like the upside down u curvy shape if you know what I mean?

this seems like one of the things you could go to home depot for and start putting together random pieces of pvc pipe.  though obviously any of the above mentioned materials would be better

Crap pic I know, but I am just thinking of ideas. I like the idea of 2x 5mm acrylic side pieces connected by 10mm thick acrylic rods in a contrasting colour, i.e black frame and orange inserts

There is no pressure on the headband, the cans simply rest on the top and allow the cans to retain their natural curvature.

I mean on the headband that goes on top of my head.  With two plates of acrylic supporting it I'm worried it might leave indentations in the padding.

That depends mainly on the weight of your headphones and hopefully the vendor will have the edges smoothened out in any case,

Understood, perhaps we can work out a bevel on the top so they wont.

Second, more traditional style, in GH orange and grey.

I like this idea, it allows for any sized can to sit without any undue pressure or force.

Slimmer, more elegant design, now onto looking at the Omega style.

The design above will be the simplest to make, ease of construction, could ship flat pack and would be cheapest. Could be acrylic, wood, metal etc.

You'll have the problem of the 90 degrees edges cutting into the headband.

I am a little skeptical of the strength of the acrylic for the top though. Perhaps a metal rod would be better?

Acrylic is stronger than people think of it, brittle, yes, but strong.

Most lower-mid end above headphones are pretty light and the acrylic rod would hold. What thickness do you have in mind?

Metal is always good, but it would increase costs, maybe have it as an option?

Well, this is just the, 'throwing stuff thats in my brain onto the PC' stage lol.

I think a 3 or 4 mm thick rod will be plenty.
