GMK NAUTILUS NIGHTMARES

GMK Nautilus Nightmares goes live on December 5!

DROP PAGE

"From a caprice of nature, not from the ignorance of man. Not a mistake has been made
in the working. But we cannot prevent equilibrium from producing its effects. We may brave
human laws, but we cannot resist natural ones."

– Captain Nemo, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Inspired by deep sea monsters and ocean calamities, GMK Nautilus Nightmares is a
continuation of the 2017 project featuring a brand new colorway and novelties.

Available for pre-order this December at Drop

Proposed kits

CORE

The Core Kit is the starting point for everyone. Composed by 136 keys, it provides basic
layout coverage for boards ranging from 60%, 65%, 75%, TKL, 96-key, 1800, CP and Fullsize
layouts in both standard and winkeyless variants.
Some notable inclusions are the accent enter and escape, split backspace and stepped caps
lock keys.

FORTIES

The Forties kit provides extra layout coverage for many small form factor and ortholinear
keyboards, including Planck , Minorca, Sebright or Percebe. The kit includes small space
keys, and Enter and Escape accent keycaps.

EXTENSION

This add-on kit extends Core’s layout support by providing multiple shift keys in 2.25,
2.00 and 1.00 units sizes for FC660-like and 60% keyboards with arrows, small space keys
and a second B for split and ergonomic keyboards such as the EM7, Alice or Lubrigante, and
extra layout coverage for 60%, 65% and 75% keyboards.

ISO

The ISO kit adds layout support for German and UK ISO keyboards.

Novelties

Featuring the Nautilus submarine, Kraken and Giant Waves, the novelties add will give you
the extra touch to take your keyboard even deeper under the stormy ocean.

Space Keys

The space keys includes accent space keys from 1.00C to 7.00C for both standard, split,
and 40% keyboards. On top of that, this kit will extend your layout coverage by including
two 6.00C space bars so you can cover an HHKB or Cherry G80-1800 keyboards.

Really dislike no ISO in base (only 4 keys needed) but instead we have those:
-2 tabs
-6u spacebar
-6u spacebar
-a lot of 1u modifiers
-10 different versions of pg up/down
-1.5u code (which we have alt, ctrl for already)
-2 ansi enter

Same goes for numpad. Splitting up kits like this is just so expensive.

I’ve always been a fan of murky water atmospheres and sea creatures, any ideas for “kraken” themed novelties?

Those listed keys are more useful than ISO, which is an incredibly small crowd.

Numpad is probably an even smaller crowd. How many people use fullsize compared to other sizes? I think it's about 30%.

It's simply a popularity game to lower the price for the majority.

Looks really good! Since I‘m usually not that into green keysets, I will have to let this sink in first tho.. (Sea pun intended .. ;)
The renders are gorgeous, really good work on those! What I think would be nice tho, if there were render with more neutral and / or more common colored boards, as most people don‘t have those (imo) „fancy“ and exaclty color-fitting boards.
Love the idea of keyboard specifically made to fit the color scheme! Genius!
Ah and by the way, I think you mixed up the inch and mm numbers.

I'll add more renders with time, it's just that in most cases I want to make the keyboard be secondary attention point, this is why most people didn't even realize that there's even a brand new keyboard there :)

You are absolutely correct about the inches, it should be 15.7 instead of 17.7!

Haha, I totally meant the 17.7 inches.. ;) (seriously tho, just was confused as my brain thought, that 900mm was too big for a keyboard, while clearly the deskmat was meant.. sorry about my confusion)
Ah yeah, makes sense about the „keyboard secondary“ point, completely valid and it does draw a lot of attention on how good the keycaps already are! :)

I think I like this. I'd be a little worried about it suffering from the solarized dark effect in terms of matching the renders, but maybe there's enough contrast in the legends for it to work out.

Happy to see the numpad keys get separated into a kit, hopefully this becomes more standard at some point.

That's why I plan to use a RAL color palette for this set, as the results we've got in the past with this system is way much better than anything you can get with Pantone.

Holy man...

That could be a possibility, I was happy of how it looked on SA Nautilus

Call me crazy but I really think the novelties kit is doing a disservice to the "evil depths" motif the palette is going for. Like, I would still have the "shrimp on a line" enter novelty. but I would switch it to like a skeletal fish/shrimp instead of the lighthearted nautilus version, if that makes sense?

Or just replace it with the Cthulu For President 2020 logo  :))

Just for extra clarification: don't expect the set to come any time soon, at all. In fact, don't even expect the set to reach the group buy stage. Please, do not take that for granted.

I know that with all these renders it might sound weird, but that's how I do my projects, I just try to do my best and present something in the best possible way I can. And prior to publishing the project page the only people that had seen it were Mike from Novelkeys (as they have designed the deskmat and I asked them for permission to make some renders of it) and some friends, basically just like I did a long time ago with SA Chocolatier.

I'll definitely consider some of the ideas for the novelties, I've seen people have suggested krakens, Chuthulu, or GMK Camping's compass (which I think worked so great with SA Nautilus).

The squid isn't hiding the submarine, it's a part of it. The submarine novelty is based on the Nautilus II from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic.

I’m in for a Special Edition Verne... My only suggestion is adding H,J,K and L keys with arrow sublegends to the novelty kit.

Noted, those could be added to the Novelty kit, but it's not on my top priorities list.
And we could say the same for accent arrows, which I didn't add because I consider them too distracting.

I was JUST thinking to myself the other day that a set with a blackened teal colorway would look really good. Guess I'm in! Might even save a couple bucks with the numpad being separate.

If anybody ever makes a keyboard with that color in the renders, I'll definitely have to empty out my wallet for it.

Please for the love of all that is mighty let us have NORDEUK/Nordic kit!

I'll fish this from our short exchange over the Massdrop talks discussion page:

This question is always asked and while I'm open for debate for this kit, and most of the time I just give the same answer: it is not viable to offer kits that don't reach even half the MOQ and get them done and only in very rare ocassions when we know for a fact that there is an enormous hype for the set given how the interest check has gone (like Nautilus), a set should consider its addition.

Because even with sets that have massive hype, NORDEUK kits do pretty badly: GMK Space Cadet reached about Ľ of the MOQ, even with some people customers actively trying to help reaching those numbers by purchasing multiple kits!

Let's say that I have with certainty that there's huge interest for this set and an international kit can be done.

So, what to do now? Given how the kits have been designed, the conditions for an international kit should be easier, right?
Not really, price is a huge factor for this kit, even with a smaller main kit. So maybe a NORDE with the UK keys could work, given the pricing of the space cadet one (which was 45 USD sans ISO enter keys and shift) it would be around 50 USD. And this will definitely backfire with the British people because "no way am I going to pay 50 USD for 4 keys". We have to keep in mind, the UK community is the biggest (and most active community) by a good margin here in Europe, so if they are not buying the kit then we have a problem, which is exactly what happened with GMK Space Cadet.

So, here is what you probably don't want to hear because the truth is that there isn't a magic formula to make this work: we have to remove keys and get a kit around the 30 USD and maybe that way MAYBE it could work. So let's say we do a kit where we do not feature the tertiary legends, and those that could be considered non-essential such as E € key, the Q @, and the M µ, and try to make it as small as possible it would get us around. I will count the 2 ISO enters as "double" keys so we can better guesstimate the final pricing:

I'm going to study two options, the first one will be having just German and British support, as these are the two largest communities in Europe. The second case will add Nordic support (NO/SE/DK layouts).
  • For an UK (5 keys) + German (19 keys) +2 ISO enters and shift (5 keys) that would be 29 keys, which should be between 30 and 35 USD.
  • For an UK (5 keys) + German (19 keys) + NO/SE/DK (8 keys) + 2 enters and shift (5 keys), that should be 37 keys, which will end up in probably 40 and 42 USD.

So I'm going to discard the latest option, because it will definitely be well over the 30 USD target price I said I wanted, and go with the German/British combo. So, now that we have a kit, given how I've set up the kits, with this cheaper base kit without Numpad and ISO which more people should be able to get it should be easier to reach MOQ for an international kit, right? Not necessarily, and we don't really know for sure because this situation hasn't been given before for a GMK set. In fact, I think that the result of doing this will be that I get more complains for having a 120 USD kit and a 30 USD International that is should fit the needs of most people rather than a 150 USD base kit with just the UK keys.

.....
(I snipped your quote out to not create such a long response)
I really appreciate you writing up such a thorough repsonse Zambumon.
I do understand that a lot of planning and thought goes into the kits.
Yes, the UK and GER communities are by far the largest one's in EU and that it's important to cater to them first and foremost.

I do however think that spacecadet isn't the best set to base all of these predictions and guesstimates on.
Mostly because i thought that spacecadet was going to sell more kits that it actually did. And i have a feeling that this might be because people like looking at spacecadet but it's not a kit they would put on their own keeb.

Most of all i think it's a bit foolish to not make a norde(ger/uk) kit just because you don't think it's going to see enough buys.
If the set is going to be ran through massdrop i would like to hope that massdrop might be kind enough to help the kit go through.

I personally only use ANSI, but my girlfriend really needs the legends to match because she is not as big of a nerd as me so she doesn't touch-type.

PS. Sorry for double posting both here and on MD but i didn't think you were actually going to go through all replies and respond to them.

That's just the most recent set, so he used those numbers.  It's been like that on MD for a while, and they can't just keep pushing them through.  It's not like they're going to make the money on it after.   They don't even run out during the cappening events.

For sure, we don't know how often or for how long MD will keep pushing kits through.
I'm sure they have a good way of figuring out if it's worth for them to put kits through.
It's widely known that they some times purchase some sets to get kits over the next price drop and don't share that lower price with the participants, i'm not saying that's wrong of them, i'm just saying that it's probably all of these things that makes pushing kits through sustainable for them.

Massdrop buys extras, but they don't buy that many extras. And I don't think it is good to have GMK making kits that are nowhere close to the MOQ.

I also think that if the numbers aren't there, we shouldn't put strain on the economy of the sets in order to prop them up.  I get it- I have layouts that I want to cover that I pay a lot more because of the structure of sets, or can't even cover with certain sets.  But that was my choice to use that layout.  There is only so long that this situation can keep going on without affecting other areas, and it shouldn't be viewed as a sustainable situation.
