Reeally liked the blue one. Is there any possibility to either offer the mods separately, or base with the nishi alphas? I don't remember if this is possible with GMK and Drop. Excited.

Excited to get in on this!

Any chance of a kit to cover missing mods for those of us who bought the drop tkl/65 kits? I'd really like to move my tkl kit to an hhkb layout and it would kinda suck to double up on some stuff. I'd think there are a fair number of people in the same boat too.

This looks great!

Adding the coloured spacebars in a non-base kit would allow people to cover both red and blue sets by getting one base and one alphas of the other colour plus another smaller kit. I would personally be very interested in doing this.

Also I would like to second the comment wishing to have other vendors that aren't Massdrop.

Very nice! Have been waiting for it quite a while.

I know it's hard to have the DC kit, given the low number last round but I really need it. Many things have changed since last round. Recently we have the nice sold number for Colevrak+ for the GMK WoB set even when it's a extension kit only without the base. And Drop has changed its sale mode from preorders/GBs to more like products in stock. Maybe Drop would buy it out if MOQ is not reached in this case?

Blue Samurai looks phenomenal, but yeah, I don't think you should leave the Hiragana sublegends in another kit. It's GMK Samurai. Make the filthy gaijins pay more to stay foreign ;D

Seriously though: Nishi in the main kit, then Latin and Pure as seperate ones.

Pure latin should stay in the base kit.
Recent drop Red Sam kits only had Nishi alphas so pure latin should stay as base alphas for this regular r2 run.

Also, any chance for deskmats?
Would definitely sell as hot bread.

Long shot but... +for EU proxy if possible

I think that I just got done buying all the sets that were available (at the time - 1800, ortho, and tkl) to adequately cover my Candybar Premium that I will hopefully be getting in July and now Drop is going to get another $300 or so out of me.

Edit - I would prefer Nishi in the base.

Nice. Had regrets after seeing this and not joining in R1.

Looks like your base kit has decent 40% coverage but a 1.5 and/or 1.75 return would help make that go further. I think if just one of them could be added that the 1.75u would be most beneficial but I’d have to double check more recent 40% boards.

Since this is a Japanese themed keycap set, it would make more sense to use nishi as standard alpha in base kit like other set namely: bushido, alter, bento, etc.. just my 2 cents.

FINALLY!

Now, let's check 'em kits. Both blue and red sets are identical except for the color, so my comments will apply to both:

1) Esc and horizontal ("ANSI") Enter are present in black and yellow; vertical ("ISO") and numpad Enter keys are present only in black. It's fine if you leave this as-is, but consider adding accent versions of the latter Enter keys.
2) Consider including the F13 key.
3) ISO is correctly supported in base. You don't have to change anything, but do consider replacing the R4 \| key with R4 <> (to follow the "terminal style" instead of the "PC style"). This change would apply to the Nishi sets as well.
4) Consider adding an 1.25U R4 Fn key.

5) Nishi sets are missing the R3 1.0 \|む keys (it IS correctly present on all other rows, though).
6) Same goes for the pure Hiragana sets: the R3 1.0 keys are missing.

7) The 2.25U and 2.75U space bars in the base kit: EXCELLENT. Now, could we ask for an additional, separate kit with just those four keys (red and blue, 2.25U and 2.75U)?

Looking forward to this!

I really like the blue base kit a lot! Please keep it Latin only.

The hiragana sublegends on all the kits lately are overdone. They're not even good for people that use kana input methods. ろ is misplaced, no ー key, no ひらがな or 変換 or 半角 keys, most are missing the ¥ and 「 」 keys, etc. It's all so people can feel cool with characters they can't read.

The "Theme" argument often used is also bad, especially since the sets don't respect the theme enough to have something near JIS support. Imagine a Germany themed set without even ISO support.

Red Samurai was the first set I really wanted but couldn't get since I wasn't in the hobby when it was released. It is still one of my favorite set of all time. I have the drop tkl version but it has very limited compatibility of course. Glad that it is back and I am in for both colorways :)

Just separate the alphas so people can choose. I'd rather have the weeb alphas and don't want to pay extra for them.  :))

if you split the kits you'll end up paying about 10% per kit extra regardless for GMK kit split tax, this is the worst solution

10% might be optimistic. Tough to get split alpha and mods below 165 USD combined and thats GMK dark money. Didn't oblotzky try this with oblivion R2?

Highly suggesting to combine red and blue novelty kit. only difference between them is the base colour for the sets, and there are more mod colour keys than the accent keys too boot.

need to see a separate alpha base splitspace bar kit too. make it as a single kit containing red and blue, though I would rather see it separate.

Am I sensing redsun making gmk green samurai hit the battlefield down the line?

+1 for green samurai.

More seriously, as neat as the original redsuns run was, I’m not a super big fan of red color ways. I’m taking serious interest in blue samurai now.

I would really like to see more of the R1 novelties turned into R4 novelties. As a 40s user, I can’t use any R1 keys if I want to keep profiles correct. Having more R4 novelties also means stronger 40s support without running a 40s kit.

Not a fan of the R1 1u backspace that is “bsp”. It should be “back” or “bksp” or just the icon IMO.

Can the spacebars kit for Blue Samurai be blue? For those who have R1 of Red Samurai, they would be able to buy the Nishi blue set and spacebars and not have to buy another whole base kit just for blue alphas.

Not sure if Planck support is a goal, but if so, then you'll need a 1u R4 Enter key, and alternate R3/R2 Tab/Esc keys. A mod-color :; key would also be good, as well as R4C 1u keys in the spacebars kit.

Going to +1 on combining the novelty kits. 19 of the keys are identical, and 15 are just color variations. Might help get MOQ for whatever colorway is less popular.

Looking forward to this!

you're not incorrect, but this wouldn't even fit a JIS board in the first place and weebs will buy it cause it's weeb ****

i don't think GMK has the right weeb mold so a few bucks can be saved by not bothering

How about we DO bother and get the kit right? Later "weeb ****" can benefit from the new mold GMK would make to get things right in this set.

I'm talking about the alphas, not the bottom row.

Also, the JIS layout (still) doesn't have standardized keycap lengths on the central bottom row. Some have a 3U space bar, others don't.

Most of the rest of the physical layout differences ("ANSI" left Shift, "ISO" Enter, split Backspace) are already supported... except for the splitting of the right Shift on the inner side.

My guess is this will be two separate group buys.  You don't want to have to participate in both GBs just to get a spacebar kit.

Just like how the Decorations kit was identical in both Belafonte and Hennessey GBs when they ran concurrently last month.

For the novelties kits, please consider adding or moving one of the r1 shurikens to r2. It's just, I don't know what the object is that's being depicted in the current r2 novelty, so would like something more universally recognized to put there.

Absolutely agree with it, after all this a Japanese theme keycap set, there is noway that the base kit includes no gaijin sublegend on it.
The low number in the nishi kit in the r1 doesn't not mean much as most of the people will buy a base kit only imo.

I'm talking about the alphas, not the bottom row.

FYI, other recent sets are using those legends as well, so the molds will likely be accounted for by the time this set gets quoted / goes into production.

There's a few things in the current hiragana sublegends that could be improved upon:
  • The R1 \|む key should be changed to \| (for better compatibility with Japanese layouts, without affecting regular ANSI/ISO layouts; the mold for this key will exist because other sets use it).
  • The R4 \|む key should be changed to \| (same reason as above; mold exists).
  • A R3 key with a む sublegend should be added, as pointed out earlier. This should either be #~ (mold will exist); or it can be \|, but in this case ISO users get a duplicate \| key (this is also the case in the Latin base kit). This key is also required in order to have ISO support in the Nishi kit in the first place.
  • The missing (han)dakuten sublegends ゛ and ゜ should be added to the bracket keys: [{, [{.
In short, see how GMK Deku or GMK Sumi did their hiragana sublegends. Keys circled in red are what can be updated here.

Similar changes should be made to the Pure Hiragana kit. See how GMK Oni or GMK Sumi did their hiragana-only legends. Keys circled in red are what can be updated here, and orange denotes optional additions.

Once again, none of these changes negatively affect existing support for ANSI/ISO layouts, they just improve upon it.

Note how I deliberately avoid saying JIS, because people who type with kana input usually don't use a full JIS layout on mechanical keyboards because of the odd bottom row. They just use all of the kana alphas, and these changes are intended to better support them.

you're not incorrect, but this wouldn't even fit a JIS board in the first place and weebs will buy it cause it's weeb ****

i don't think GMK has the right weeb mold so a few bucks can be saved by not bothering

How about we DO bother and get the kit right? Later "weeb ****" can benefit from the new mold GMK would make to get things right in this set.

JIS is a 3u spacebar ISO enter layout that is not supported by any existing custom PCBs that i am aware of, so it's 100% not worth it to appeal to that layout

I'm talking about the alphas, not the bottom row.

FYI, other recent sets are using those legends as well, so the molds will likely be accounted for by the time this set gets quoted / goes into production.

There's a few things in the current hiragana sublegends that can be improved upon:

This could be further improved by ensuring the R3 key will be \| (not #~), while making the R4 key be <>. This would ensure consistent terminal style in all cases.

I think the latter key's mold doesn't exist... but it can be created, AND getting the US English/Nishi legends 100% right can be a feature to market as an advantage of the Red/Blue Samurai sets.

I'll echo what many commenters have already said:

+1 for Hiragana subs in the base kit. With subs in the base kit I would strongly consider picking up both red and blue.
+1 for V2 Hiragana sublegends.
+1 for fixing some of the sublegended keys, especially the square bracket/brace keys.

I hope at least some of these changes can be incorporated. Very happy to see this set making a proper return, I'm sure it will sell well. GLWIC/GB.

Spacebars other than 6.25u and 7u in the spacebar kits should be alpha-colored, imo.

I completely agree.  As it stands, only alpha-color 6C and 1.75C are missing.

You're probably looking at this one, which is the set from Round 1. Don't get this one if you are interested in the Round 2 group-buy, that one will be available in June.

Also in the 'add 40s support' camp  :p tbh, I don't use 1.75 enter and the base kit is sufficient for me, but I do think having 1.75u enter will be beneficial to 40s out there

I just saw some changes were made to the novelties which i'm not really looking forward to, tbh  :'(

- Please keep the yellow sword enter novelty instead of the yellow base red romb one.
- Get the 1u R2 and R3 novelties back like rev.1 as 65% boards are quite popular and those are really good to have to make the right most column fulfilled with novelties.

At least make a poll or something in order to check feedback that way  :thumb:

Yea, this is increasingly looking like a post to sell early interest and not to solicit feedback of community wants.

The novelty changes aren’t good IMO. And the addition of text novelties, while neat, is baffling to me. This kit doesn’t need two sets of novelties that will be very expensive and polarizing. Increasingly it’s looking like I’m going to pass this up. GL everyone.

The novelties changes are quite disappointing imo too, those in r1 are more iconic especially the katana yellow enter and samurai helmet.

And yes, I agree with someone above, we do hope this thread is really gathering opinion, discussing and getting feedback from the society. No interaction nor society's concerns have been addressed as I can see.

Just hope that all the changes are for the sake of making people love this set more instead of creating more ''new molds'' and making it more expensive.

Is one of the Oni-Tengu-Ghost rows in the text novelties supposed to be R4? There are two that are labelled as R3 currently which feels weird since there are no R4 1u novelties.

Agree. I also want 1u r2 and r3 novelties back for a 65%. To echo what some other people said I also really liked the samurai helmet and want that back. I mean this is a samurai set, it was the most samurai looking icon of the originally pictured novelties. I don't really understand why that was taken out and now we have a 1u skull novelty instead.

To answer some questions:

- Hiragana sublegends will stay as is for now.
- I had to choose a route, two base kits or just one with hiragana addons. One route could be more expensive for another.
- Latin alphas will remain in base kits because it seems to be more popular and because there are Drop kits available.
- Not adding more keys for unique layouts.
- Ortholinear support is not a goal based on interest.
- If I skipped question, it can probably be answered by checking the latest kits.

- I will update 'Menu' 1.25u to 'Fn' 1.25u in base kits.
- Novelties changes soon.

i'm assuming this is still in the design phase, since the red novelty kit has more keys than the blue one. only thing i'd like to see is the number of novelty kits cut down to 2, max.

either:
1 blue novelty kit with picture and text novelties + 1 red novelty kit with picture and text novelties
OR
1 picture only novelty kit that has both red and blue keys + 1 text novelty kit with red and blue keys (if any)

i understand your desire to have English only keys in the base set since drop GBs are meant to appeal to a more mainstream audience (who are more likely to put this kit on a corsair keyboard than a GOK or similar), and i can live with that as long as the nishi and hiragana sets are not too expensive. in the R1 GB, the ortho kit was $85, and 42 of those 82 keys were alpha keys. based on that, if the new 50 key alpha kits can be made available for around $50, i think it will be fair.

But now the concern is price. Those are quite large novelty kits and look like they could push up on the $70 price range. Yikes!

Why have additional arrow kits been included in the novelties kit?

Need 2u spacebar back in for split space support to make it more complete, please!

Hello, my friend is looking to purchase the Blue Samurai set, but when we checked Drop, we only saw the Red Samurai set. Are they running at different times or am I missing something? Thanks in advance!

The Red and Blue Samurai group buys haven't started yet.  The Red Samurai that is up right now contains sets specific to Drop's keyboards.  It will be open for three months.

The Red Samurai group buy related to this IC will probably start in the first week of June.

The answer is almost certainly no, because I'm pretty sure that Drop co-owns the Red Samurai IP now, or at least has exclusive distribution rights for it.

+1… 2u space is severely lacking now… I don't know who was surveyed but a ton of people will want that… not everyone has been buying the Drop ortho kits, many are waiting for this GB.

Red Samurai 2 are already on pre-order on drop.com, but I don’t see the blue version on there and don’t want to miss out on red if I can’t get the blue, hence the question.

The new round 2 kits have not been posted on Drop yet. What you're seeing on drop right now is a separate ROUND 1 kit specifically for Drop keyboard layouts.

Read the posts before yours in this thread.

Shame there are no ortho kits this time. Brought one of the existing kits for my brother for his lilly pro
Need one red and one blue for my mine(latin)  lilly pro and lily rgb

Or at least offer a latin alpha kit in each color and a mod kit.

Unless someone else in Australia wants to swap latin alphas for nishi(for the red)

Any chance to add nishi to base kit or add another base kit option. I think would drive a lot of orders especially given this is a japanese themed set, it makes more sense to have nishi in base. It would make me buy it if that were the case.

Your ebst bet is to buy from other listing if you want the caps with both characters on them. 100usd for the tkl isn't too bad

There are 3 different listings on Drop - one for their ongoing red nishi offerings for TKL, 60%, and ortho that has been around for a while, one that is a second round of the red base set and various add ons, and the first round of blue. I purchased the TKL one recently and can verify that it goes for $100.

You can. On the first drop down list scroll down and there are options for space bar etc. It'll say e.g. Space bars - $70  and subtract the cost.

Edit: sorry my mistake.. I bought the novelties only.. There doesn't seem to be an option for just the spacebars..
