Started playing piano for about 4 years as a kid. Then got drums 13 years ago and took lessons for 5 years and got pretty good. Moved onto guitar and bass as well as vocals harmonica etc. I consider myself a well rounded musician. Loved making music and wanted to learn to record professionally so I enrolled in a private school at metalworks studios in Mississauga for audio production and sound engineering and learned to use all kinds of analogue rack gear and well as SSL and Neve consoles and also learned editing on tape. Played with a few bands in highschool and right now I just write and record in a small home studio I have set up for myself and just do the solo thing now.

Wow, you have a really nice home studio.

I started playing the piano at 5, then drums in junior high, then bass, then guitar.. I've never been in a band but I've recorded some of my own stuff.  I'd like to learn how to sing properly..

currently have a publishing deal with Epitaph Records.
that is so sick! Do you know or have ever met Brett Gurewitz, the founder? if so I am Super jealous! I am such a huge Bad Religion fan, as you can tell from my avatar.

Also I have been playing guitar for about 5 or 6 years. Iv never really played in a band or anything, I took lessons when I was first started, but I have to my anxiety to play in front of other people lol :x

Yah actually. A few times. He's a cool and laid back dude.

I've been playing drums for a long time. I've played in a few of punk/hardcore bands, a "rock" band sort of like The Killers or something, and now in a folky rock type of band. Ive toured a few times, and gone on a bunch of tours with friend's band. I've been having fun lately learning guitar as well. I bought a Little Martin recently, easy to learn on and sounds good. I've mostly been playing early Bob Dylan tunes and some Cat Stevens on guitar.

He is me playing drums in a band called "Check Your Face" in 2006 @ CBGBs shortly before it closed:

Here are three songs I recorded with my last band, "The Mega Mega". When ever I listen back to them, I really wish we could have gotten off the ground. I really think these songs are good, especially "Animal" as a single type of song. I really like the end of "Perilous Tale of...." as well. Take a listen: https://soundcloud.com/kevin-caplik

Sorry to necro, but I recently took up the viola.  Although it has only been a couple weeks, I am finding that playing an instrument again is an incredibly enriching experience.

By the way, is there is a bigger/more recent thread for GH musicians?

I played violin from 5th grade - 9th grade. I wish I didn't quit but I didn't like my high school teacher. Now she just sits in her case under my bed  :(

Well I guess I'll keep this zombie thread going. I've been playing guitar since the mid-'90s. Started in high school and joined a punk band with some friends. I also once helped out a fledgling local boy band by recording some guitar tracks for their demo CD. Not my proudest moment. That boy band went on to get signed to a small time contract with a major label, and their songs appeared in Rush Hour 2 and the original Fast and the Furious film.

In my early 20s I had some local success recording parodies using a drum sequencer and my own guitar, bass and vocal tracks, and sending them to my local rock station's morning show (Rover was local to Cleveland at the time). That gig didn't pay but it was fun and I scored some sweet VIP tickets as compensation.

Later in my mid-20s I switched to classical guitar and that's what I've been playing ever since. It's really challenging but I don't make as much time to play as I should.

So that's my story.

Played trumpet in primary school. Sold it when I got to high school. Self taught piano including bass clef. Got lessons on violin in my early 20s. Still play piano fairly often and violin occasionally.

I played trumpet as well at that age.  Actually cornet first, and switched to trumpet too early.  Then the desire faded, and being a competitive runner is not exactly compatible with instruments powered by breathing.  I remember that my private teacher was not happy when I made that decision, because I was somewhat good.

Funny story about my first private teacher.  Supposedly, he was the best brass instrument guy in town, he didn't think that I was very skilled at the trumpet.  He tried to switch me to the baritone, but decided I sucked at that after five minutes of playing, and to keep going with my mediocre trumpet playing.  Then auditions came around and I got first chair.  When I told my teacher, he laughed for a couple minutes and then asked me to stop lying.  Way to kill a 12 year old's confidence, bud!  The guy was an arse, anyways.

I'm finding that the strings might be what I was meant to play all along, because I don't even have to try in order to practice.  I just get going, and an hour or so passes and I don't even notice.  We'll see what it's like when things get more difficult.

Well I guess I'll keep this zombie thread going. I've been playing guitar since the mid-'90s. Started in high school and joined a punk band with some friends. Who cares, you made some money and collected some checks.  That seems to be the big goal of life, anyways.

Used to play the bassoon. Yeah. I was that cool.

Helped me meet a lot of girls though. :thumb:

Wouldn't go back and stop myself from picking it up at all. I really loved it and even played at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, was pretty ace.

Kind of sad really that I met a girl whilst playing about 9 years ago, and she's recently left my life and it really tears me up inside. One of the best things that ever happened to me and I ****ed it up by wanting to get together with her.

90% of my life decisions have been awful.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Let's take a moment for inspirational talk.  Everything that was meant to happened has happened.  Events of the past shall be accepted and not dwelled upon.  All that matters is what you do with where you are now.

About the girl.  You didn't screw it up.  You took a risk, the risk did not pan out as you hoped, and now you know.  Now you can move forward with that knowledge in hand, learn from it, and give yourself the opportunity to meet more girls.  You're still you, and who you are is still good enough, you just have to sincerely believe that.

As you already know from your bassoon playing, girls love men that are skilled at...anything, really.  It shows them that you have the desire and dedication to learn something and challenge yourself.  It doesn't matter too much how good you are, but more that you can do something that can impress them.  Many females loves symbols that show you own things, are somewhat skilled at something, or have status.  The minor details and who you are as a person comes second, unfortunately.

Now the people that are worth sticking around in the long run actually care about who you are as a person, rather than superficiality.  Focus on them.

Checking in here.  I'm been playing the viola for about 3 and a half months now.  I'm officially addicted.  I'm having a lot of fun learning the instrument and playing music again.  Playing an instrument just for the joy and challenge is one of the best decisions of my life.  Might play with the violin, too, just to see what that's like.  Can't wait to see what the future holds if I keep playing!

I'm not a musician (although I was nearly a drummer in a band at uni), but I encountered this video recently:

http://faithreel.com/worlds-best-street-drummer/

I think I saw that guy outside Flinders St station a couple of times.  Not bad, not bad at all!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Ooh, think I missed this thread! For me, music is my #1 way to relax. I don't record anything, compose or whatever. I just play for myself, by myself. My first instrument is keys (piano, synth, organ) and I also dabble in wind instruments like flute, recorder and EWI. Where this interest goes even further is with the gear. I just love musical instruments, and I have a room filled with them. Not only piano, organ, synths and woodwind, but also guitars, bass, e-drums, trombone and other stuff that I suck at using. It's like a garage band without people and just a weirdo looking after the stuff, messing with it now and then.

Some of the gear:

Nord Lead 2

Yamaha DX7
Yamaha TX802
Roland JV-1080

Tenor clef! It's like playing in a brass band but without the weird extra sharps!
Former trombonist here checking in. Used to be professional, but can afford keyboards now :-). Haven't taken it out of the gig bag for a couple years other than for a quick show n tell at my kids pre-school.
Used to play a lot of styles, symphony, opera, big band, small-group jazz, funk, salsa, merengue...

10 years classically trained in piano and violin! Used to play in a symphony orchestra as well.

Lately I've been singing, and trying to teach myself guitar.

Taught myself guitar 18 years ago, but there's intervening years I didn't play. Played bass guitar in a band for a couple years. Also fiddle around on a piano here and there.

Current equipment:
Gibson Les Paul Studio
Marshall full tube amp with overdrive and chorus
Ovation LX
Shure Beta 58a

Favorite equipment used:
Vintage Fender Bassman 50 plugged into a Marshall cabinet
Paul Reed Smith Santana
Shure Beta 58a (personally, I think its the best stage mic ever)
Peavey Scorpion cabinet (mmm, beefy)
Fender Rhodes

I don't play much currently. The Gibson is in storage, and the Ovation is next to my desk, in an effort to present myself with 'easy' playing when the mood strikes. Trying to teach myself piano again, other than being able to play parts of a few songs.

Guitarist  here. Taught myself how to play sometime around middle school. Have quite a few guitars but I've really been enjoying my Ibanez j-custom lately.

I have always wanted to get into classical guitar, but would need to teach myself how to read music first... One of these days...

Former electric guitarist turned classical here. I can only barely read sheet music, it's a huge chore. But I've managed to muddle through and learn a lot of pieces that way, and each time I do it gets that much easier. So in a sense, playing classical is how you teach yourself to read music.

Hmm, well that certainly gives me hope :) Glad to hear I'm not the only one who can't read sheet music.  I imagine that if I buckled down and tried to work through a few pieces it would get easier as you said. Maybe this weekend...

How do you get the guitarist to turn down?

Put a chart in front of him.

That is funny, but I'm just not sure anyone can sight-read guitar sheet music the way some skilled pianists can. For several reasons: (1) the guitar has as many as four ways to play any given note, with at least two that might make sense for a given chord or melody based on the musical context of notes around it; (2) to account for this ambiguity, arrangers use Roman numeral finger positions, fretting numbers, string numbers and plucking fingers, all of which are helpful but add lots more data to be processed in the moment; (3) guitar sheet music also usually has a ton of notes that are way above and below the staff, because that's just the range of the instrument those are harder to read because the lines are small.

All this amounts to sheet music becoming little more than a reference for your memory after extended rehearsal and honing of your chord formations and transitions. Come show time, the sheet music is pretty much useless. So for those who can play by ear, what value does sheet music really provide?

Now, over on the classical side you've got some really creative arrangers and composers who create pieces so complex that you can never really get it all down just by ear. So sheet music is more useful there. But even still, once I learn a piece, the sheet music gets filed away never to be seen again.

I've worked with plenty of guitarists who could read fly ****. All you need is practice ;-)

If you're going to be a professional, you want to be able to accept all the gigs you're offered, not just the ones the don't involve sight-reading.

edit: and obviously if you're not going to be a professional it doesn't matter in the slightest how well you can read.

Time for more musician jokes!

Used to play the bassoon. Yeah. I was that cool... Helped me meet a lot of girls though.

You bassoonists always get the babes... Well, it is the most masculine-looking instrument.  ;?)

I've been a pro musician most of my life. I started playing piano at pizza parlors, restaurants and hotels around L.A. when I was 16. (It's hard to believe, but there were lots of pianos back then!)

I played at Disneyland when I was 18, then transferred to Walt Disney World when it opened, and was there nearly 10 years. That was a great education. I learned to play and write in a bunch of styles, and also picked up banjo, guitar, mandolin and accordion (and actually got paid to play them!). I also did some promotional touring around North America with Disney groups, and participated in the opening of Tokyo Disneyland.

After leaving Florida, I did studio work in L.A., and played at hotels, country clubs and house parties around southern California, as a soloist and leading some small groups; then did the same around Monterey and San Francisco. I also got to play at jazz festivals around the U.S. with some excellent bands.

In addition to composing and arranging, I'm a music editor, and have prepared scores for publishers and recording artists. (My specialty is piano and keyboard music, which can be tricky.) My favorite music is jazz (from ragtime and blues to funk, and just improvising), classical (early music to 20th century), tango and musette (on accordion—hey, somebody has to do it), bluegrass, world music, movie music, and a few other genres.

I've never been big on aggressive, high-volume music. It's great that people like it, but I miss things like variations in tempo and dynamics, key and meter changes, the creative use of space, the expression of feelings (besides rage), and so on.

Some of the people I studied with have also pointed out that while you can impress people with technique, you're not as likely to touch them. In other words, too much technique can interfere with musicality, and turn a performance into more of a gymnastics demonstration. I've generally found that "less is more". Of course that may not get you the mansion and the Bentley.

I'm also totally baffled by the whole celebrity-DJ thing. Someone's a star because they play other people's music? Okay, they can segue really smoothly from one tune to another, yeah, I get that... But doesn't it also seem like something club owners would dream up to avoid hiring bands? Sometimes I feel like the kid in "The Emperor's New Clothes" on that one. Maybe I just haven't seen the right people spin turntables.

Anyway, it's impressive how many of you guys are musicians, too. I suppose KBs and music have always had something in common. Besides computer music itself, it's all about being dextrously creative, right? Type on!

i'm not saying you'll dig this, but you might be interested to know there are a bunch of wimps out there making aggressive high-volume music that features all of those things :) i suppose out of all things, key changes are the least common in my 'neck of the woods' but it does exist. big points that get forgotten in a lot of 'loud' music that i find in bands like these: syncopation (everywhere!!), odd/shifting time signatures/tempos, lots of use of dynamic range in terms of volume and space. basically think of... i guess, metal and punk, but played by wimps who like jazz and philosophy and poetry and a bunch of other non-aggressive crap that most people write off. it's very musically engaging... but i would not call it accessible.

yes, you hit the nail on the head. I'm mainly a jazz drummer, but I absolutely love metal (especially technical metal don't hate me).

Can't believe I haven't seen this thread.

I play guitar/bass.  My band has been on hiatus for a while, but we are still writing songs.

If you get bored the best collection of our music is at http://purevolume.com/CommonwealthFL

Just took a listen. I like your stuff. Reminds me of MXPX and FPK (South African band, "FokofPolisieKar").

I "dabble" in drums, bass and guitar. I have a 7 piece drumset with double bass pedal, 6 string 5 string basses, 12-string steel string and an old (1973) Ibanez electric, but play the electric guitar most. Started learning guitar, switched to drums, then tried bass and finally came full circle back to guitar.

Was in a punk band back in the day, wrote some songs, had one gig. The drummer broke some sticks, singer forgot the words and we sucked overall, but was good fun, for us and the audience, thankfully. Homemade effects pedals in a peanut butter jar with toggle switches on top that I switched with my toes 'cos I couldn't afford proper footswitches  :p still make most of my own effects / gear.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Circlee pitt!! Stage dives!! and PCB soldering!!

That's how I picture both of you, trenzafeeds and CommonCurt  ;D

Awesome stuffs, guys! I love your music!

As for me, I play guitar. I mainly play pop punk/punk rock music, and I rarely use my first 2 strings in my guitars.  :))
I'm currently using a japanese telecaster, run through a mesa single rec. The mesa is quite an overkill, though, as I haven't played live since i moved to Australia..

My wife bought a digital piano (Alesis); she used to play when younger, and wanted to pick it up again. My oldest daughter took a liking to it, so we signed her up for lessons. She's in love with piano now.

Her interest inspired me to pick up my old B♭ clarinet. I played it all four years of high school, and one semester of college. In college, I realized I didn't want to invest so much time to keep up with the other, more advanced players, so that was the last time I played.
But now I invested in a couple of instruction books and started practicing again. The first few practices were rough, but it wasn't long until memory kicked in. I forgot how much I loved to play.
