Title: Cherry PBT Dye Sub Keyboards on eBay
Post by: litster on Thu, 04 October 2012, 13:00:44
http://www.ebay.com/itm/130776235154 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/130776235154)

Not really a great find, since a bunch of noobs are fighting it out, with 2 full days to go.  They have 20 feedbacks combined across 6 bidders.  The bid history is fun to see. http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=130776235154&showauto=true (http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=130776235154&showauto=true)

If you are one of the bidders, you are doing it wrong.  Either someone will snipe it from you right before the auction ends, or you absolutely over bid.

Why is this so expensive again?

Here are past prices:
May 13,2011 - $435 + shipping - http://www.ebay.com/itm/200605537797 - NIB
Jun 19, 2011 - $315 + shipping - http://www.ebay.com/itm/200619118890 - NIB

I wonder how much this one will sell. Dyesub caps are good, but I am not willing to pay that much. We should remember that those are auction prices which is maximum of the submitted prices. If anyone is buying them in hopes reselling, it is likely that the person is going to suffer losses because the winner is paying on top of everyone who wants to buy them.

LOL... that much for boring beige set on a crappy MY board... and I only paid $10 for my blue on grey Cherry dyesub set which even was on an MX. Not sure I have even seen the NCR G81-3000 with dyesub go for that much, and it even has a nice casebody to use as well.

It just goes to show how much imsto could make if he made a beige/gray set with cherry font.  Not that much obviously,  but he would have no shortage of buyers. One can dream.

Hey! I have one. It's in a really bad shape with missing keys/springs/stems... But maybe I can still get $150 for it. I was lucky to get it when it was cheap - only $25.

These genuine Cherry dye sub PBT keycaps are so expensive because they are hard to find, and they are not being made any more, and most of all, they are genuine Cherry.  Are they worth this much?  Maybe so, to the people who are bidding.

IMSTO's PBT caps are still in production and are not made by Cherry.

Wait, so your telling me imsto might have these after all?  Genuine Cherry is nice, but if I can get something that looks and feels bascially the same for one-third the price I am all in.  PBT and Cherry font is the end all be all for me. :)

I'll give you $20 for that blue on grey dyesub 'board. You'll turn a nice profit.

While these "can" be found for super low prices, I don't think it's the norm. Everyone knows Cherry Dyesubs are rare, so they go for a lot. Me, I'd go imsto.

He has them, yeah.  Look in his vendor subforum.  The catch is that he only has grey and blue keys right now.  What most people want is the classic white/grey colorscheme.

I have that exact same set (gray with blue modifiers).  I am in the same boat... can't wait for the classic colors. :)

It's ironic that you guys all laugh at them and call them idiots, and to turn around and look at us and see that most of us will jump on a $50 CC, and even pay up to $500 for a single one. What something is worth is relative to the buyer.

When imsto brings back white/beige with cherry legends, this will be obsolete. I know some people just like collecting originals, but in the end it's the same s**t.

How much one values genuine Cherry PBT dye sub is one thing.  Showing your high bids 2 days before the eBay auction ends is another.

HA! I got another Cherry dyesub MX last night for $35 shipped off ebay BIN listing. It's got Spanish sub legends side printed in orange too, and another windowed full touch shift lock key. Awesome. Got my eye on another one thats in auction in green legends. More people need to do thier homework and find the other 'brands' Cherry OEM'd for. Maybe after the green one auction ends I will share as there are a few more in blue just like one I already have. I just don't want the competition LOL.

Ok, so they aren't exactly keyboards, but... a goldmine of dyesubs on old TA/Royal electronic typewriters. Some models are MX, some MY, but be careful, some aren't Cherry even though they look like it at first glance.
These Beta (http://www.ebay.com/itm/TA-Royal-Beta-8100-Portable-Electric-Typewriter-/280790082154?pt=BI_Typewriters_Word_Processors&hash=item416064a26a) models are Cherry, as well as some Alpha (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Royal-alpha-700D-Electronic-Daisywheel-Typewriter-/270887084855?pt=BI_Typewriters_Word_Processors&hash=item3f1220e337), Gabrielle and Satellite (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Royal-Satellite-III-Electric-Portable-Typewriter-Processor-Ribbon-/221135448900?pt=BI_Typewriters_Word_Processors&hash=item337cb32b44) models.
They can be had cheap and come in several colors, so some interesting alpha sets for sure. The con is you won't get complete set for modern board, but for $30-60 average instead of $300+ it's a reasonable trade off if you ask me.

Contrariwise, if you could find a working Beta typewriter, you could use (e.g.) Qwerkeys' or WASD's keycaps to make an awesome typewriter!

Edit to add a question:

Is there a source for good information about which models had MX switches?  I've been missing having an actual typewriter and if I can, would be totally into pimping one out with new keycaps.  For sure I'd then make the originals available to GH folk.
Title: Re: Cherry PBT Dye Sub Keyboards on eBay

The only one I know for a fact 100% has MX is Triumph Adler 825, as I have had one personally. Otherwise I am not sure about all other models. Out of the 3 I linked I think the satellite would be the best candidate as it is older. Most of the later ones that used Cherry at all seem to be MY as I suppose it was more cost effective.
As I said, I have one on it's way and am mostly only interested in the caps, though if it has more of the MX white linears I will want those too... but even still if you're willing to pay shipping on it I would be willing to send it on to you.

Post by: samwisekoi on Mon, 08 October 2012, 15:42:08
Thanks; that could work out.  I'd have to pay shipping anyhow.

Let me know if the machine is fully functional and clean enough to dress up with new keys.  Also, I assume you'd leave the typewriter-specific keys intact.

Thanks again,

You think that alpha 700d really has MX compatible keycaps with green legends? If so: It's worth it!

I'll make an offer on just the caps, and see if I can get him to pull them for me. Sellers sometimes do.

Kurrk over at DT discoverd it, I just expanded my search to find more models... you can see the thread (http://deskthority.net/photos-videos-f8/t-a-gabriele-7007l-caps-t3508.html), I think the Alpha and Beta are nearly identical to the gabriele model there, which is MY based.

Yep, but I convinced him to just sell me the keycaps. I wasn't expecting him to accept my $1 offer, so we settled in the middle, for $15-$20 shipped for just the caps.

I'll post my disappointment or excitement when they arrive. They went out on the 11'th.

I don't think they even come to the door sometimes to be honest. Like they just assume weekday no one home and don't even really make an attempt. I prefer to have everything sent usps since I've never had problems with the post not delivering things, but some sellers insist on ups or fedex for some damn reason.

This will just make a person lust for a full set even more haha

Typing on half and half is weird, and other PBT dont feel the same as Cherry original PBT, can't imagine mixing it up
Title: Re: Cherry PBT Dye Sub Keyboards on eBay
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Fri, 12 October 2012, 12:05:58
Using lasered set for the modifers isn't ideal, but it feels uniform. I mix with doubleshots and it doesn't bother me. All the letter keys (except the \|) are one thing, mods another it's ok to me.
I have some different color Cherry doubleshots set with same problem, same amount of completeness on modern board.
Title: Re: Cherry PBT Dye Sub Keyboards on eBay
Post by: tsangan on Fri, 12 October 2012, 12:11:25
I dunno then maybe its just me that needs it as a full set haha

Don't get me wrong I think they are gorgeous keys but having enough for just the alphanumeric is kinda odd to me esp since the colour tone doesn't match and what not

But hey like you said its a pretty good price
Title: Re: Cherry PBT Dye Sub Keyboards on eBay
Post by: litster on Fri, 12 October 2012, 12:13:58
it is a great price for dyesub.  but like tsangan, I prefer a more uniform setup physically and visually.  I wish there is a full set with these colors.  These typewriter caps look awesome.

Well the 510 I got just arrived... turns out to be brown dyesub with orange sublegends. The base color is of course yet a different color than anything else I have
More of those awesome linear white switches though, so I am still pretty pleased. Now I just need to do a good cleaning.

Unfortunately the typewriter didn't make it, arrived smashed to bits. But, that's fine as it saved me a good deal of time disassemble to pull the switch pcb.

I don't see how using these alphas and other modifier is any worse than the oldschool white with beige modifiers doubleshot sets. Same thing.

Looks great! Could look great on a more modern board with darker modifiers, maybe.

It's stuff like this that make me jealous of you Americans. Even though Sweden is rather close to Germany it's somewhat extremely hard to find old MX (or at least MX compatible) stuff. Someone somewhere in this country ought to have something lying around. :<

Well everything kinda matches and feel the exact same when you type...

I'm just not one to mix and match too much especially sets wise and material wise, I tried out SP PBT, Cherry PBT, imsto PBT, KBC PBT and they all feel different in someways so I just couldn't see myself mixing them up. As for colour wise while those are gorgeous colours not sure how to match it and thats if I can get over the mismatch material/maker

I know where you're coming from tsangan. Some things set me off too, but I was mostly talking about mixing Cherry with Cherry. The modifiers on modern lasered set still use the same old thick key molds, even though they don't on the letters. So you still get a uniform feel but with crummy lasered legend. I wouldn't want to mix other manufacturer either.

Good news:
Cherry!
Beautiful green doubleshot
Center-stem capslock
Lots of cool names on the keys (I have an "XXX" key now. Who wants it?)

I recommend it to QWERTY lovers!

Research. Dorkvader, did the Alpha come with MY or MX? Just curious since I have one coming myself and trying to plan out if I will have enough of those white linears for some projects.
I got the seller to pull the caps for me, and mail only those at a steep discount (like $15 or $20 max). I'll ask him about the switches.

It's pretty awesome. The only non-doubleshot key is the spacebar. I love green, so this is a good haul.

I got one that Lysol directly linked, but all I really needed to know was that some electric typewriters have cherry-compatible keycaps. I'm getting better at determining them from the profile. Cherry keycaps are really sharp on the edges, and they come to a nice point at the corner.

I'm making a list, but I suspect the satellite 3 and the beta 8000 have Cherry, too. This is just from the pictures, though.

The beta 8100 is mine :D. Waiting for the invoice now :D. Thanks lysol for the great information.

BTW, the beta 8000 in ebay was made in Japan. So I think it's ALPS.

I was just wondering if you saw it in picture if you had the seller take any more before buy the caps. No need to bother them I can just wait another couple days until mine turns up.
If it's not made in West Germany, it very unlikely to be Cherry. Beta 8000 is definitely not Cherry, that caps lock gives it away. Cherry stepped caps lock the high part is 1.25 not 1.5.
The older ones with the sperical keycaps might be something like Cherry M7 switch, but that's just a guess due to the years made before 1985 it can't be MX for sure.

Post by: dorkvader on Tue, 16 October 2012, 09:18:10
I saw the spherical ones: They reminded me of beam spring keycaps: whatever the case, I decided to avoid.

I'm not sure about the 8100 being PBT. In this picture the keys look a little yellowed, which I thought was a more ABS kind of thing:

http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/6/9/5/5/1/8/webimg/591981231_o.jpg
On closer inspection, they are somewhat shiny, so I'm guessing cherry DS now.

It says made in west Germany, and the layout is pretty much identical to mine, so it's a good bet for cherry DS.

I think that is likely too, is seems to be the same thing except in color. I just wouldn't have guessed for the colored doubleshots. Either way it's some nice keycaps.

Would anyone here happen to know what the likelihood of a TA (Triumph Adler?) Gabriele 7007L having dye sub keys is?
I've scoured all Swedish sites I can think of, and this is the most interesting item I've been able to find. Don't know if it's worth 250SEK (about $40 I think) to try though. <:

Also, it seems there are a lot of Gabrieles over at German eBay. Just thought I'd mention it.

Ah, thanks. I thought I'd seen it somewhere! Too bad about the MY switches though.

The Gabriele 100's look a lot like the 7007L's, so I guess one can assume they are pretty much the same (at least when it comes to the keycaps and switches)?

Hard to say, Spharx bought a 110 and it turned out to be some foam and foil amstrad switch crap. This one (http://www.ebay.de/itm/TA-Triumph-Adler-Schreibmaschine-Gabriele-PFS-/321001983556?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D2810755138292402836%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D321001983556%26) looks interesting, it has some cool looking arrows keys.

That appears to be Cherry. The person probably had no idea what they were talking about, or possibly didn't even really check it out. Asides from a few minor differences, it is identical to a set I have...

There are some that have almost identical legend font to Cherry, but the corners of the keycap base are rounded not sharp. You can clearly see that the corners are sharp in the photo. I will guess they might not have been willing/able to remove a cap and just said no.

So far I have gotten 1 set for $10, and 2 for $30. Actually whole typewriter for that price shipped... 2 broken, but they had nice MX switch too so still quite a bargain. Still waiting on my Alpha to arrive but really hoping it makes it in tact and working. It's supposedly 'as new' and is supposed to come with several font balls. I think it will be fun to play with. I guess it depend if it's MX or MY on if I will keep it or just steal the caps and get rid of it though.

edit:
My TA Alpha arrived. It turns out to have Cherry M7 switch, which is predecessor to MX. They are quite interesting.

Not really sure. Seen some Cannon with alps before so maybe that. Here (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CANON-TYPEWRITER-Keyboard-NEW-PARTS-dont-know-what-model-See-Picture-/140872696383?pt=BI_Typewriters_Word_Processors&hash=item20ccaac23f) one with the keys assembly removed, it's plate so very likely mech of some sort. Since they have it out of the typewriter it might be easier to get them to take some additional pictures, remove caps etc and much cheaper too due to the shipping.

left shift is kind of interesting, the center post seems in the right spot but the other two are set ever so slightly further out than on a cherry doubleshot left shift of the same size

are they really older MY switches?  wondering if they're any good (compared to the new awful ones), didn't really spend any time typing on them though before i removed the caps

So I ended up picking up the keys in this listing as the seller was nice enough to pull all the keys and ship them to Australia for a reasonable price. I learnt that post-sale service is miles better than pre-sale service.

The key caps are dark grey on beige doubleshots (they match the beige from my white/beige DS set). So their colour is much darker in person than in the images. They are in much better condition than that second image (which is not the same board). They are not shiny at all and all have their original texture. The only visible wear is some yellowing on the blue keys, while the beige keys don't seem to be noticeably yellowed.

I'll put up some pics soon. Very happy with this pick up and they shall be going on my Poker and matched with the purple GMK mods :)

according to lysol anything with that semi-stepped caps lock isn't, also on some other models or pictures of that same model you can see they have rounded corners instead of good ol' sharp cherry slashers

after looking at this (http://www.lonestaronline.com/listings/details/index.cfm?itemnum=971563830) and this (http://www.totalofficesales.com/catalog/images/typewriter%202%20002.JPG) i'm almost positive these are cherry dye subs -- if not, then they're doubleshots with dyed sublegends; not sure why they'd do that, though.  i'm typing on an almost identical set (http://imgur.com/a/2VrDJ) right now and after looking at enough of those typewriters i don't see how they couldn't be cherry caps.  the problem is i contacted the guy via e-mail, with a picture, and even called him on the phone and he kind of hurriedly came back and said they didn't match and hung up.  that was about two months ago.  i'm thinking he either couldn't get the keycap off with ease or didn't care enough, so, someone else should probably contact this guy and figure out what is going on since it has been relisted about 50 times now and i'm tired of looking at it. :)

if they are dyesubs, you can automatically win at life (http://i.imgur.com/4Ysij.jpg) and enjoy a superior typing experience.  the only thing keeping me from contacting the person again are the sublegends, they're a little less pleasing to look at than on the set i have, but you can't deny the feel of cherry pbt.

that caps lock is also center stemmed.

i'm almost positive these are cherry dye subs -- if not, then they're doubleshots with dyed sublegends; not sure why they'd do that, though.
I am also pretty sure these are dyesub. I went through a lot of pictures, trying to start a list. Just as an added note: I don't believe ABS dyesubs exist, so they're either DS& pad print or all pad print or PBT dyesub.

Also, if you only get the keycaps shipped (under an ounce sometimes, under 2 Oz very likely) it's pretty cheap shipping, even to Australia.

maybe if I end up getting this, I'll put my green doubleshot keycaps on it, and use these on my keyboard, Since the typewriter works, it'd be a shame not to use it.

I updated my page with the guess that they are dyesub.

I didn't get any good view of them at the time, but they look double shot and sperical to me. Pics are not even taken by a potato cam.

i'm almost positive these are cherry dye subs -- if not, then they're doubleshots with dyed sublegends; not sure why they'd do that, though.

I updated my page with the guess that they are dyesub.
http://wiki.geekhack.org/index.php?title=Typewriters

Nice list. Great resource for anyone looking for these.

And yeah that's exactly what I requested with the Beta 8100 caps I got this week. Except it was easier in that case as I paid the full price for the typewriter ($15) and requested to ship only the keycaps afterwards.

Are you not using your green doubleshots for anything else? I'll take them off your hands if not :)

damorgue, I have seen typewriters with similar keys on eBay before. I do not believe they are MX compatible, but I don't really know for sure (Not having seen one).

jeroplane, They're on my spare grey G80-8113, which is not currently in use. I'm thinking of maybe selling it.

I posted a while back asking about typewriters. You seem to be discussing them a bit here, and I was wondering if you knew whether these are MX compatible or could estimade the odds of them being useful in any way? I didn't get any good view of them at the time, but they look double shot and sperical to me. Pics are not even taken by a potato cam.

They are most likely not MX-compatible. I have seen sphericals like that on typewriters, and while the stem mount matches the cross of MX stems, I believe the four "stabilising tabs" (not sure what they're called, but the four things that connect the key cap sides to the stem mount) usually extend to the bottom of the key. So while they can be placed on MX switches, they cannot be pressed down at all.

If you ever do sell it, you have a buyer right here :) I love that dark green, it's my favourite colour. I've been looking around for another Alpha 700D or 610 to get that set, but haven't found one yet.

At least that might make them usable. I am not above removing those supports to make them fit. I have removed ribs from molded parts before and it is usually very easy with a plier to remove them without damaging the rest. There are like 20 of them stacked in a shed close to where my parents live. I might go have a more thorough look sometime. I could probably only find use in the alpha block though, as the shapes and stabilizers of the others might be more of a hassle to adapt to a modern layout.

Thx

some old cherry sphericals for reference, as mentioned they will fit onto an MX stem but can't recede into the switch housing.  i'd probably recommend a dremel or something for those since you'll need to grind down some of the plastic stem portion, too, but the ones you showed may be different.

Ah, I see. I thought there were only the ribs that extended to far down and thus hit the housing. Those could easily be removed. I see the problem you mentioned now, that will be much harder to fix.

Probably going to check them out. I am visiting them now, unfortunately I don't have any keycap to compare it too, and don't have my cad files either. What is the normal diameter of the cylinder in which a normal MX socket is located in a keycap?

Don't have calipers for a more accurate measurement, but it's approx. 6mm at most.

By the way I managed to get a Triumph Adler Gabriele 7007L with ES layout that I still have to receive . The deal with that CompacTA 400 didn't go trough because the seller didn't respond anymore after sharing some emails.

Quoting my posts in Deskthority you can see how I'm talking about another source of Dye Sub keycaps.

Quote from: guilleguillaume
I got a nice surprise today with a Triumph Adler CompacTA 600 that also has MY Linear switches.

Quote
It has Dye Sub keycaps and AWESOME MY linear switches that feel fantastic, almost as vintage MX Black.

I didn't need to open any switch because there is a key that uses a switch as stabiliser with a different Stem so it doesn't activate the switch. I can see how it's made and will take pictures of it so everyone can see innards of the switch.

They don't use any spring and instead use some kind of metal leaf in the bottom left of the switch. They feel fantastic and nothing to do with the ones that 7007L has. This typewriter was in better condition and must be because of that that the switches feel way better.

Will post the pictures once I've cleaned all the keys.

You can see pictures here: Triumph Adler Gabriele 7007L (ES layout) (http://deskthority.net/photos-videos-f8/triumph-adler-gabriele-7007l-es-layout-t5194.html#p100239)

Will add more pictures of both typewriters once I've cleaned all the keycaps.

So, the typewriter arrived today just as I was heading out the door, not enough time for photos, but I am able to confrim the keycaps are cherry compatible - dye-subs for the gray keys, doubleshots for the bright green.  Switches are pre-mx linears of some kind, probably m7's.  I don't like them - they are heavier than mx blacks with a weird progressive force curve - longer travel than mx, gets heavier as you press down on them.  All in all not bad though, that code key is pretty sweet.

They look like the vintage MY found on many typewriters.

Excellent keycaps! I've always liked the typewriter keycaps, and this is my favourite of the lot (dyesub green!) even the doubleshots are nice. I had a few doubleshots in the same colourway with my typewriter keycaps. Excellent pictures, too.

The fulltouch "LOCK" key is great, but it's a shame both shift's are the same size.

I'm pretty sure these caps are cherry compatible - I can see part of the switches in one of the photos (third picture with the flash, look at the outline of the z+x+c keys), and it looks to be the same Cherry MY switches as the Royal Alpha typewriter I just bought.  Price is more than I'd be willing to pay (as I'm not a huge fan of this colorway), but that red on light gray/beige code key is pretty cool looking.

It's the same typewriter as Triumph Adler Gabriele 7007 L .
Mine has double-shot 'erase backwards'-key and a white carriage-return switch ..

Decent deal on a Triumph Adler Gabriele 7007 typewriter (vintage PBT dye subs) if you are in the UK (free next day shipping for UK buyers, according to the listing, at least):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TA-Triumph-Adler-Gabriele-7007-DS-Electonic-Typewriter-/370860286593?pt=UK_BOI_Office_Equipment_Supplies_Office_Equipment_ET&hash=item5658fee281

edit: Okay, I'm not sure if these are MX compatible caps or not - there is a difference between the 7007 and 7007L, apparently (7007L - definitely MX compatible, 7007 - unknown).

This made me go look up Hermes typewriters.  Now I really want a mint chocolate chip cap set for my white RK9000

I believe these are vintage Cherry/BSP dye-subs (looks like navy and light blue on light gray), not sure about switches, probably vintage MY's (if so, the keycaps should be MX compatible) - just note that this ships from Alaska...

Nope. Check the corner of keycap, it's too rounded.

You're probably right.  Although the vintage dye-subs caps I have from TA typewriters are similar when it comes to rounded corners, and they are MX compatible.  Here's a pic - the vintage dyesubs are the 3 teal on light gray keys on the numberpad, the other keys are imsto dyesubs and modern BSP dyesubs:

I was also able to track down a few more pictures of the various Cyclo models, some were manufactured in Germany, some in the Czech Republic.  Based on color scheme I think this model is from the Czech Republic, I suppose that makes it less likely for these keycaps to be MX compatible.

If anyone's interested in these, before you bid consider contacting the seller and see if they'll pull a cap for you.

Reallyhard to tell with the pictures being that shaky, but the corners might be too rounded.

I was going to reject it on the basis of having too much area on the top of the keycap. Again. too hard to say for sure without better images. Those are like the ones where I accidentally press the button when I'm moving the camera to a new angle, except worse.

You can see it best in the third picture, very clear ^ gap between the spacebar and adjacent keys like how SP keys do. On Cherry it's hard straight lines.
I have a very good eye for these things, having to rely on equally bad or even worse than those picture when buying. I have only been wrong about Cherry keys one time in my own purchasing.

Thanks for the identification :) Good to know that tab is an original Cherry dyesub, not a replacement. It looked very odd to me at first.

It seems we can not directly place the order on Taobao.com.   But can here for the keyboard cap:

Taobao requires the use of a proxy/agent which is what that site is that you listed. There are many to choose from and even a few forum members who proxy as well.

Shipping is based on your location, and, for me at least, I see a cheaper FedEx option, ie: $32.30 economy shipping via USPS Parcel Select and a $14.16 standard shipping option via FedEx Ground.
