[IC] Artisan Boxes
« on: Sun, 09 August 2015, 21:54:18 »
People seemed interested in these, and I am able to get them :) Pricing will be box, + shipping, + group shipping divided by however many boxes are ordered. Can be seen here: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1-c.w4004-11124711960.19.8lAthi&id=45612404157

I don't really want to wait that long, so I will start GB for these this week.

Well, as far as shipping goes, I think I will use a courier. AFAIK they repackage, but from pictures I have seen of them they look fine. I ordered one already a few days ago, so I can report as how well it survives. If he offers international shipping, I will ask him to package them a bit more.

I've ordered a few in the past and they almost always arrive broken.

if that's the case (heh) it might be worth it to just buy a bunch of acrylic and get it cut to shape/size locally within the US

someone investigate that for me

I was looking into that. Would be pretty easy to do, but obviously more expensive.

Also spamray, did you order them directly from TaoBao? And how were they shipped, and through who?

Some through bhiner and some through tabaofocus. They were shipped using international registered mail.

Okay, I will ask them when they ship if they can put soft cell foam around the inside.

Not to derail your thread, but how much would it cost to some acrylic keyboard roofs done in the size of an HHKB, like EK's, but without paying $30+ shipping, even though that's probably what I'll have to do.

You reckon they'd survive the trip down here, given what SpAmRaY was saying?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Terribly I already have the super large one and it has cracks in it I would expect these to have minor cracks.

I would happily be down to get another but I would strong recommend not ordering the largest as they do like in my case have multiple  cracks although the proxy you use should take pictures to show you before hand

I rekon it should be alright as long as its not packaged like the industrial Model M I got shipped from the US, if not it wont be a big loss so I am ok with the risk.

On an unrelated related note, it sort of reminded me of this, which I hoped to get some day to display artisans:

People seemed interested in these, and I am able to get them :) Pricing will be box, + shipping, + group shipping divided by however many boxes are ordered. Can be seen here: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.1-c.w4004-11124711960.19.8lAthi&id=45612404157

I don't really want to wait that long, so I will start GB for these this week.

I'm in for 25-50 depending on the cost + shipping.

Once mine arrives, I am going to look into getting an acrylic lid cut. If there is interest, I can have multiple cut to go along with Seth's orders.

I'll check with him before I do, and see how things are looking.

Yes most definalty I can take a picture when I get home if you want but, its the same one as I bought a month or two ago although I got the largest size one which take like 100+ keys it came with a lid as I can mount it on my wall and the keys stand up correctly!

Yeah again if it is the same as what I got which looks the exact same it came with a lid, the body and base of the case was frosty, while the lid is clear acrylic

I would be interested in several. They don't look as nice as Martin's acrylic cases do, but he said he's not making any more anytime soon, so this looks like a good substitute.

OP, any update?
I am waiting until ghost juggernaut gets his and we will decide on what to do from there. Depending on quality, it could be possible to have them made on the U.S. If it is around the same price, I hope people don't mind waiting for them to be made in the U.S. I just want to see quality / how well packaged they are. And as far as cost go, I will invoice for case price + domestic shipping first, then once I get the bill for the international shipping I will calculate your percent, and once you pay the second invoice I will ship it out. If you end up not paying the 2nd one I will just refund.

Yep! Just waiting to see quality/shipping quality. I would hate to order them and have half of them come broken or have them be cheap plastic

If your not too fussed its coming from me, they are good quality, the acrylic is around 7mm thick, the sides use a frosted acyclic while the base and lid use a clear acrylic the lid opens super smoothly without much problems, the only part required to build are the inserts inside the box which all just slot together I would advice using a little glue and you might need to heat them up as they come somewhat warped but fit very well overall the case is good, I suspect the one I ordered is only damaged due to the size but if possible I would recommend getting these cut in the US rather than ordering for overseas as you will get a lot with cracks just due to the cheaper acrylic used and its super hard to stop it cracking, just worried as if you plan to sell these you may end up with a lot coming back, I would recommend getting them made and using a thick acrylic like what Martinyeah used for his box, as that is almost impossible to break! also pictures!

Thats the damage that mine came with just as a fyi to you.

Showing how the keys stand up when the lid is on, I would recommend mounting this to a wall in a picture frame type move as it will look rather nice.

Just showing how they lean against the lid to stand

The lid

Has a little frosted bit glue to it to use as a handle.

Also the cracks are not all the way through just internal to the parts

I'm potentially interested if we can be reasonably assured that they will survive transit. Still not sure why they don't make these out of a less brittle plastic.

Im still interested. I really think the damage is due to a packaging. BUT if you order a number of them and get a proxy to ship you can ask them to add extra packing material

I am going to work on a design this weekend. I just wanted to know what people would prefer in a box. I personally felt like 3x5 trays would be nice, and have a drawer system to hold multiple. If not that, then possibly a flat tray to display them all, similar to the ones this was originally started for.

Let me know what everyone thinks. I will most likely make the box for myself, but I can design something else for the IC if people don't like that setup.

Don't forget this :

Ohh also to note, they do not fit keycaps such as zombro's due to the size and other keycaps around that size, but fit most everything else

so you can make a slight improvment of the design :)

I would personally like something larger than 3x5, like 5x5 or larger. Just so I don't have to worry about buying another box anytime soon

I was thinking more along the lines of a storage case of sorts, with slide out trays. It would be less of a display case though. If people don't want it, I'd be happy to make one similar to the one from taobao.

Okay, I know a way to do it. I will make some autocad drawings, take it to a few different places, and have them cut. I will then make it a DIY pack w/ acrylic cement.

Acrylic cement? To, like, put the slots where we want them?

I was using switch testers as displays for the few artisans I have, but would prefer acrylic boxes so as to use the keycap stems as little as possible.

Nope, I know a way to do it so you only need to cement the walls

This. Today marks the day I've run out of room on my switch testers for artisans.

In terms of slide-out drawers, are you talking about something similar to the old GasMask/HKP acrylic displays?

Exactly that. I have a thread about what I'm making. I should have a sample here soon.

If people are looking for storage solutions I use these from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/18-divider-storage-container-94456.html

$3, grab a bag of cotton balls, stick a few into the bottom of every well, boom - instant artisan portable transportation. Obviously not as nice as these acrylic ones but it cost me $3 and has a lid.

Someone asked about these before, and I finally got around to grabbing the link.

http://www.containerstore.com/s/gift-packaging/containers/boxes/small-clear-amac-boxes/123d?productId=11000251&green=5F5F5FDC-8C06-5BBE-0018-C5505D78F1C5

I have the #60140 boxes, and they are the perfect size for single keycaps. I'd still rather have something better,  but they work really well and aren't too pricey.

Interested in an artisan box. I have heard bad things about the one originally linked to, but it seems we have some promising alternatives. Definitely interested in what is produced State side.

I would REALLY like for this to happen, or at least ghostjuggernaut's. It seems artisan boxes are hard to come by, or are no longer in production, but surely there are many others out there that have need for them. Especially now that the keycap community has grown and we're seeing more artisans for other switch types.

I'm still waiting on info. The manufacturer I am using is pretty backed up right now, and a prototype isn't high on the priority list. Once I get info I'll update GH.

Hauteware Boxes came in -- Verdict: Can't recommend

The boxes look great, and fit *most* artisans perfectly. However, it attracts dust, fingerprints, and scratches easily. My second box came with a ton of scratches from shipping. It does look sleek, but im pretty annoyed at some of the shortcomings (and the fact that i mistakenly chose DHL shipping costing me way too much for these little boxes  :'( -- I'll most likely trade 1 for another artisan box or sell it off to recoup some loss)

The lid is pressure-fit to stay in place. The lid is ANNOYING to remove-- basically, have to jam ur nail under the lid to get it open. The artisans are also hard to remove, which is expected because of the snug fit.

One cool thing is that the little separators can be remove to allow varying sizes, like mods or spacebars

The problem comes when you have some artisans that protrude a bit, like Booper Bruce/Keyngv3's nose/ Any BS artisan/Nightcaps Turtle Shell. The lid fits really close to the acrylic seperators and barely leaves the artisans any room to extend outward.

All in all, i'd say ~nope~ Go for the one that everyone likes from taobao, and don't use taobaofocus, maybe bihner?

If someone were to organize a group buy to have these type of boxes cut to people's specs (color, size, depth) I think they'd get alot of orders -- considering how much the artisan game is growin'  The slightly OCD would appreciate sure appreciate it! Hell, if I ever get the time, I may look into it! :))

Well that's a bummer. They look sleek but seeing it in your photos, in a more realistic setting, makes them more fashionable than functional.
You say there's really close space from Bruce to the lid; does that mean Bruce will fit at all? I have the sliding-lid version from TaoBao and Bruce will not fit at all.

Funny that you mention Bhiner instead. I was thinking of using FOCUS next because Bhiner ripped me off in my last order.  :))

In that case, taobaofocus may be better, perhaps if i didn't mistakenly pick DHL, prices would have been better --

They literally just stuck the box that was shipped to them in a DHL bag and sent it over to me ~ so the company handling fulfillment could have been at fault for the scratches all over my 2nd box.

Bruce will not fit at all, the lid would put too much pressure on the top of it & it barely get the sides down to secure it  :'(

overpaid on taobao again --- but am really happy with this one

its tall enough for all artisans!!

and trays come out as well as seen on my timestamp for MM

My one criticism is that the little separators are fragile and really only kind of hold them in place-- they will fall out of place easier than higher walled boxes~~

other than that, I can recommend  :thumb:

Excellent! I saw nguyen had that one and was intrigued, so I looked it up on TaoBao.
I like how it's clear, but I'm still iffy about the drawers. I'd like to be able to look at all my caps at once, but I guess this solution is the best if you want a drawered organizer. And it's tall enough for tall caps! I bookmarked it, so definitely plan on ordering one in the future.
Can you move the rows and columns around? I have wider caps; if so, are there enough to maybe fit a space bar in there?

Can you move the rows and columns around? I have wider caps; if so, are there enough to maybe fit a space bar in there?

Unfortunately you cant but it does have that far right space for larger artisans or 1.75 blanks and what not -- my keybutos where a bit too wide for the regular spaces so I had to nestle them in those.

I know what you mean by wants to see them all at once, but im liking the idea of a box now, im even throwing my artisan stickers all over the sides :P

probably wont go in on the alu hitlu boxes now
