hhkb more tactile dome swap.
« on: Tue, 15 November 2016, 23:48:30 »
ok, the basic idea for this thread is to share some things that i've found.
i decided to swap the rubber domes out on my hhkb.
just to try these other domes that i harvested from another keyboard.
out of curiosity to see what they would feel like.

i harvested the domes from my sony BKE-2011

the domes inside this keyboard have the carbon foot inside them, instead of a spring.
so i had to remove that to make room for the spring.

here is a comparison shot of the traditional topre dome, vs the sony dome.

and here is a photo of how nicely all of them fit into the hhkb.

and lastly..
a photo of them both cut in-half to see the difference in thickness of the dome itself.

i think that the domes from the hhkb are much more thin on the collapsing walls.
was hoping for more grams of force than more tactility.
but in the end i don't mind what the outcome was.

essentially it has become much more tactile. and a bit louder. but its not that bad tbh.
i told myself that i would stick with it for a few week before i swap them back.
they feel a bit more firm than stock domes. and there is definitely a more noticeable bump.
it is a nice change. but also, not cheap to get one of the sony keyboards just to make this mod work.

i think this post may trigger some people.
if it does. i apologize.

Awesome project. Looks like a lot of work.

Was the original BKE-2011 a decent keyboard for typing or not?

If you 1v1 me in a cage fight I will use an AK-74 for ranged and an IBM model F 122 for melee

yes, but not the best layout.
nor could you use it without its proprietary hardware.

Do you think you could upload a typing video with the news domes sometime? I'd be interested in the sound.  :)
