Title: [IC] Doyu Studio Chiwi60 round 2

end of Update 19/02/16

Hi, Everybody!
I'm sennin32 from Doyu Studio.
It has been near a year since Chiwi60 1st round.
We face many issues of manufacturing this years.

Here is the interest check form : https://goo.gl/forms/wdTBwlzQ6PTnoGm83 (https://goo.gl/forms/wdTBwlzQ6PTnoGm83)

We're looking for better quality of PVD coated case.
Finally, we finished exciting sample and get them this week.
The coating manufacturer did a nice job.
Check images here!
PVD/DLC (https://imgur.com/a/EkshuPn)
Anodized (https://imgur.com/a/GKh8E)
Some more (https://imgur.com/a/8v2bG8y)

We also found some weakness of our kit which will effect how people feel when they're typing in first round:
1. Sound it not as good as we expect.
2. Support too many layout with low needs.
3. Some plate scratched.
4. Case damaged.
4. Brass is hard to avoid impurity issue, which will cause different shows up on the surface, and that will make some lighter dots.

So, here is what we might going to process second round this time :
First thing is we might going to fill the space in the keyboard with PC bottom, we call it 7 deg bottom for now.
We reduced layout support, keep popular layout only for a single plate, make switches more stable.
We've contacted with Manufacturer in Taiwan for several months.
The kit is going to be a Made in Taiwan product.
Our choice of companies are manufacturing for some of the most famous corporate.
They're experienced in making numerous kind of products from daily life to military purpose.
Also, getting updates from local cimpanies(100+km away from us though :))) will be much easier.
This time, we'll use stainless steel as the material of PVD/DLC(*1) coating premium version.
Reason why we did that is based on several manufacturer's advice.
Brass contains more impurities, and it will be harder to make it perfect.
Although stainless steel is harder to machining and polishing, but it will be easier for PVD/DLC and brings better result.
Since we are going to make it with stainless steel, somebody might want to get case without coating.
So it is also an option in the check.
we don't plan to offer universal usb port this time to reduce co complexity and cost. Offer better pricing.

Here's info we want to get from this check:
First thing to know is if there's enough people is interesting in this kit and let us to make it happened.
Color and layout thing is also necessary.
The 7 deg bottom which fill the space and make the keyboard sound better we mentioned above is also one of the question in the form.

Must include in the kit :
1. Case frame
2. PC bottom
3. Mount plate
4. Tiny weight
5. Screws and feet
6. Cats hair and teeth print on parts

Pricing per kit(include DO60 PCB) :
Stainless steel w/ mirror polishing & PVD/DLC coating : ~$400
Stainless steel w/ mirror polishing : ~$380
Stainless steel w/ sandblasted surface : ~$370
Anodized case : ~$160
ED aluminum : anodizing case +$5
7 deg bottom : Might + $30 each, we haven't get quotation of this.

*1 DLC for black and PVD for other color like gold.

So I'm just gonna ask even though the answer is 95-100% no; any option for HHKB? :P

There was a true HHKB layout option in round 1 so it's possible.

EDIT: I saw an option in the google form. Were you after a 7u symmetrical version instead?

Quick heads up: the IC form seems to be messed up. Even if I say I am interested on the 2nd round it says this:

All good, thanks checking. I was thinking I did something wrong for a second :) I will definitely join this one, this new finish is fenomenal.

WOW DLC? I'm no longer for 60% keebs but DLC alone could change my mind (65% would be the top notch tho). May i ask why R1 full brass was $250 and this is $380-400 btw?

Also, YES a bottom not in PC could be great, especially on the DLC/PVD version, BRASS/SS DLC BOTTOM  :thumb:
Since you are going All-In with DLC on SS, you could consider a thick brass plate too.

Bottom in brass/ss and DLC/PVD + Brass THICC plate would be instabuy to be honest.

Make sense, $250 was a steal for pvd on brass...

The cost of each case in last round is around $340...
(case with defect, surface treatment are major problem)
We think we'll make it lesser this time, but not much :(

Ya, not lot of people want it, and we'll release the plate design anyway.

You mean for the thick plate or for the 7 degrees bottom, or both?

Regarding the bottom i think it would be nice (premium finish on top and premium finish on bottom and extra weight). Maybe you can save a bit by integrating the small weight in the bottom and make an unique piece at bottom, since the whole bottom will be the weight with these materials.

Regarding plate maybe you can make it integrated to the top case to make it thick. DLC/PVD will cost the same since it will go in the same exact machine due the dimension of the frame, you will pay more in cnc sure but also no need to make standard plates later. Would totally spend +$100 or so for an integrated thick plate.

Idk i understand if this can't be made, i'm just listing 2 things that would make it appealing to me (at the current status, just DLC says "buy me")

Plate design is kinda useless when the only HHKB option is -true- hhkb with a 6u spacebar. Being able to get my own plate won't help, case won't support it.

How about 2x3u with HHKB blockers? You can use the same plate and PCB, just need a case that will cover the gaps.

To me that's the optimal 60% layout -- "true HHKB" 6u spacebar, but split. Doesn't get any better unless you do something exotic like ortholinear or Katana60.

And completely impossible to get caps for afaik. Not a single GMK set that has 3u right?

the pvd/dlc is extremely interesting.

can someone clarify if that bottom PC piece could be replaced with a "normal" ss bottom piece for those of us who don't use any of those RGB nonsense?

I would be in if this supported 7u hhkb with split space. Standard ANSI would be ok too I guess.

Making thick bottom with PVD/DLC stainless or brass is not possible based on quantity in round 1.
And the price will be insane. ($100 up for bottom only, 20 orders)

Thin one will not able to avoid the sound issue.
And the price might need +30 up for thin one.

I kind of liked the Chiwi60 with poly bottom design, although the sound I'm not sure if I'll be a fan of, I haven't seen many typing videos with them or touched one myself so I can't say.

Anyone have any input?

Bottom thick angled and DLC is +$100? It would be ok for me tbh

+$30 for a thin DLC? Totally OK Sennin. Tons of people paid +$50 or more (don't remember) for a bottom brass pvd for the Doro67, which was just a 3mm flat plate basically.

Please give us one of these option, these difference are totally acceptable, doesn't make any sense to me to have a PC/plastic bottom on the top made of SS+DLC

$100 up, and I have to sell at least 20 pcs of them 0.0...
polish and dlc/pvd coating cost around $30~$40 each for low quantity.
thin plate can use polished plate to make, polishing will be skipped.
I can add the option, but I don't think there's enough order to support it.

maybe the bottom can be made with brass+sandblast or brass +eplating. Afterall it's just the bottom and eplating shouldn't be expensive.

Since you are doing R2, please consider a better packaging (some form of foam at all will be tremendously helpful) and QC on the Chiwi60. A number of PC bottom has minor scratches on them so please keep those in mind Sennin  ;)

Seems like you are using another manufacturer too, which can be great.

If anyone wants to ask me anything on the R1 Chiwi, feel free to.

You could keep it plugged in while on the stand and use it as an rgb light.

In all seriousness though, dlc onto stainless steel should be more resilient than anodising.

I would be interested in a carbon fiber universal plate (compatible w/ gh60 arrow layout) and an inexpensive steel base instead of polycarb. Still have not built my R1 since I would greatly prefer the carbon fiber plate and also a heavier base.

to each his own, but I believe the point of the polycarb base is that it will be thick and fill up the interior.  I'm guessing it will not be heavy but probably not light.  And it will make the board sound a whole lot better, and allow underglow.  I guess if you go with the metal base you could just stuff the insides, but then no chance of underglow.

Cause we want to fill the space inside by bottom plate.
But if we do that with metal, the cost of bottom might similar to body.
Lucky people won't see inside with metal bottom installed.
So fill with foam or other item works too.
We also list this option.
But it does not look good when open it.

Can we put the HHKB in the HHKB layout chiwi60? (round1 or round2) as seen here https://imgur.com/edXhHm4.jpg?
I guess he designed his own plate based on our plate file.
we don't have this option now :(
And I don't have a original HHKB for test 0.0

Very interested in a WKL kit for an ED white w/ 7 degree case!

Consider me tentatively "in" as long as the angle is 7 degrees or lower (5-6 would be ideal but I know some people really like their steep boards).

But I would want to see (and hear) the solid polycarb bottom, as well as see what the finalized layout options are.

I really want to join!

Is there a prototype of the stainless steel version?

Is there a prototype of the stainless steel version?
No.
We made prototype with brass, but there's some tiny spot, I can't show the issue through pics, sorry.
Been told it is because of brass is harder to control, they get impure spot easily.
I asked several manufacturers, most of them suggest me switch to stainless to solve the issue.

Might able to push the end date a little.
We've arrange most of things with manufacturer before lunar new year @@
You might also consider get it later.
We have to make much more than people ordered this time because of MoQ and high fail rate in R1.

This photo option is "Stainless steel /w Sandblast Surface"
Is that right?

Forgive my ignorance, is the Chiwi60 a bottom mount case? It doesn't look like a tray mount.

It's top mounted.

Interested!
Would there be an option of the kit without the PCB? I have enough 60% PCBs of my own already!

You will need the DO60 PCB. I thought I could use my own PCB in round 1 and none that I tried (dz60, zeal60) had a USB port that extended far enough to be functional through the case (had both kinds of USB cutout cases as well).

About how far would you day the usb c connector on the pcb is from the case?
