SA Keycaps - Best Non-Linear Switch Compliment?
« on: Thu, 23 August 2018, 18:47:09 »
TL;DR: What are the best non-linear switches to compliment SA profile key-caps?

---------------------------

Long Version: Traditionally my favourite Cherry switch is MX Green, but I want to branch away from Cherry for my next build and try something new. I have a board with SA profile caps on Zealios and I'm not too keen. Having a tonne of wobble on the stems due to the higher profile, exacerbated by the tactile bump, doesn't feel great. I'm keen not to make the same mistake again. I've heard that heavier is better when it comes to SA caps, and I'd like to go for a clicky switch if possible (tactile is an option if not).

Recently I had the opportunity to try out some BOX Whites.
I found the feel intriguing, but they felt a bit light with SA caps.

Would BOX Navy/Jades work well, with the thicker clickbar?
If so, which do you think would feel better?
This is all a matter of opinion, of course.

Interested to see what people think.

(Next build will be plate mounted if that makes any difference).

I personally love the hell out of my CA66 with box Navies and SA Strong Spirit. It's just so much fun to use.

Box Navys sound and feel great. They're my favorite switch by far. Just make sure you're ordering from NovelKeys to ensure you get new stock.

I just ordered some old stock box blacks off of reddit...how bad is the old stock in terms of destroying keycaps?

I really wouldn't trust SA caps with them. They didn't outright DESTROY my Dashers, but it's not as if I'm going to put them on again or anything.

Hmm thanks for the info. It's a shame that I tend to love SA, lol. Why do they hurt SA and not other caps?

I personally didn't enjoy SA caps on my cherry clear board - much prefer that one with cherry profile pbt. I'm going to try linear switches for my SA set next, but otherwise I bet the click bar switches would be satisfying with them... but I don't plan to try kailh anytime soon after all the horror stories!

That is the biggest damn spacebar I've ever seen.

In any case. Looks like the consensus is new-stock BOX Navies.
I'm holding you all personally responsible if they're awful.

Not really - they were my more or less my default choice anyway.

Thanks all!

I put box navies on my Contra and couldn't stand them. I'm gonna try to desolder them but I have to desolder the controller first which is gonna be a *****...

They're way too heavy and way too tactile

Just remember they're REALLY STIFF. If you don't like stiff switches, you'll hate them.
