All thanks to you mate, for the brave, excellent start! Feel free to improve. For one thing, it came out too dark overall. By the way, I'm using GIMP on Linux, with zoom at 800%

Hah, exactly what I'm using!  Well, zoom varies, sometimes 200%, 400%, even 1600% at times but for this 800% has seemed the most useful zoom setting.  You can certainly see the dual tone bezel more clearly in your last version.  Shouldn't be too hard to lighten it up.  It's difficult to tell what colors are going to look right until you're done with a pass & look at it.  Sometimes doesn't turn out like you'd expect and needs tweaking.

Man, you guys have been busy on here. A Kinesis Contoured? Whoa.

Here's the blue-keyed 87U with a tweaked front lip for better accuracy:
(Attachment Link) 21556

I have kept my hunger for perfection busy, and I thought there was a little room for improvement, but then I quickly realized it is not possible to make this better.
The line around the F-keys, and near the arrows should be 1,5x wider, but since it is 1 pixel wide it is not possible to make it 1,5 pixel, and it would also stretch the key area.
The area between the Realforce sticker and the Esc is currently 2 pixel wide. It should be wider, but by adding 1 pixel there would make it just as wide as the distance between the Esc and F1 keys, which is not correct and
that would also mess the key area.
I concluded this was already as perfect as a pixel art can be.

Well done TexasFlood!

Now for a challenge, a M15! (which I don't have)

I had such good luck with getting help improving the Kinesis Contour (thanks to sordna) that I thought I'd go ahead and post my first take at an M15 and see what suggestions for improvement come out of it.

Damn fine work here in the last few days. I didn't think the more complex case designs would make it as pixel art!  :thumbsup:

Thanks.  And in case you were wondering, splitting it at this size ended up messy looking ever way I tried it.  If someone else can figure it out that would be cool.  I only found one clean way to split it which is pretty silly, :wink:

So yes I think it looks messy but maybe I'm just being too picky, here is what it looks like with the same angle split as the earlier image from the photograph I posted some pages back from the link you provided.

The previous one is total angle of about 56 degrees. If you can describe what you're looking for I can see how it comes out but I'm not going to try and guess what you want again and again, :wink:

OK, I couldn't leave it alone, thought there might be some easy tweaks worth trying, any better? After my own compare, I'm sure it is better so going to remove the previous image. This one is a bit messy if you look close but maybe usable in a signature.

There are 3 Kinesis model colors, black, white, and silver (silver has black keys). The first "white" Kinesis you did is almost the silver model with a tweak or two being needed.

Those look really good. I'm impressed.

I tried to close up the angle from the original image of an M15, but I didn't close it up as far. Here's what I achieved:
[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 21682
I used the angle that made for lines being stepped three pixels at a time, instead of two pixels, as in the original one with a wide split. The choices that provide a possibility of a passable result are limited - and the fact that the keys are four pixels wide make using a three pixel step risky already.

I corrected the image because I didn't use transparency properly around the rounded corners originally...

I split it at the angle that made the lines step in units of 3 pixels, unlike the original, which stepped in units of 2 pixels.

You can get a little more resolution out of the LCD screen.  I don't know how he does it though.

Thanks, I was sceptical but I can see it in the Dell Logo in the linked post.  Now I'm just confused as seeing it's real still leaves me clueless as to how to take advantage of it.  Did some quick googling, looks like it leverages the RGB layout which is very cool, but can you depend on that to always be the same as seemingly there are multiple types of pixel geometry used?

I think this works fine with all desktop LCDs.  It may not work with OLED screens that are used on smartphones.

Basically, how it works is you can divide each pixel three ways horizontally: R, G and B, because a full color square pixel is actually three vertical, rectangular, monochromatic bars.

So, what you do is you have a background color, say {1, 2, 3} and a foreground color {100, 101, 102}. Your pixels may be aligned something like this, for a three pixel horizontal line:
{1, 2, 3} {100, 101, 102} {100, 101, 102} {100, 101, 102} {1, 2, 3}

You can make this line look like it's one third of a pixel longer by changing the color of the last pixel:
{1, 2, 3} {100, 101, 102} {100, 101, 102} {100, 101, 102} {100, 2, 3}

...Or, the first pixel:
{1, 2, 102} {100, 101, 102} {100, 101, 102} {100, 101, 102} {1, 2, 3}

Basically all modern full color monitors have the same R, G, B pixels (it is the standard), but it is true that this technique won't look right on a rotated monitor. Also, it only increases the horizontal resolution.

It is a technique that is used mostly for font rendering, since fonts (Latin fonts especially) really benefit from the extra horizontal resolution. Though, it can definitely be used in pixel art as well.

Here's an example of a tilted line done using subpixel anti-aliasing, at a normal resolution, then at 8x zoom.

Disclaimer: I've got a monitor using a DVI cable (typically giving a better image than analog cables) and using very crisp pixels.  I have also very good eyesight.

Am I the only one seeing the 'E' in the "subpixel" rendered DELL logo as green?  Looking at both Linux and Windows ClearType rendering, they're mostly using red'ish pixels to AA what's at left and blue'ish pixels to AA what's at right (even on light gray background).  I think the green component is too flashy in the 'E' on the various DELL keyboards in this thread (is green usage even correct at all?)

For example (right is correct subpixel AA):

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 21724

you need to see the picture at its regular size or it doesn't make any sense

On-topic: when's the G80-5000 (in a split state) coming?  : )
As long as it takes you to open mspaint and draw it? :wink: That's how I got my Rosewill image, decided to do it myself. I might try the G80-5000, if I have time, we shall see. But it would be nice if more folks gave it a shot.  You can get reference images and usually cut/paste at least parts from earlier work of others to get going. I use GIMP on Linux as I'm used to it and, well, mspaint is difficult to run on Linux, unless you have wine or something set up, which I don't on this box.

Everybody loves a comedian......unless you're in the crosshairs.

:)

I looked through the whole thread, and there are some borderline amazing renditions (accurate!). Very fun, very cool. Maybe someone who is motivated will set up a "pixel art wiki page" as a source for people to pull from.

I'll try a Datahand this weekend. I use Mac so MS Paint won't be my tool of choice. Maybe Paintbrush, which is a Mac equivalent, plus whatever other software...

Well I didn't mean to be "target" anyone in particular. Apologies if it came off that way.  I actually did start on a G80-5000 but it's a work in progress.  Pixel stuff isn't terribly difficult.  It's like any computer drawing, just tricky working with stuff that small.

I'd never done pixel art or even really knew what it was. There actually are some pixel art web sites out there which I looked at but I really didn't pick up a lot there, most of it seemed very geared to doing sprites for games or really serious artists who just happen to use mspaint.  There are some amazing, intimidating examples of what can be done on youtube.

I was a little hesitant but finally just dove in and got started.  I started with the Kinesis Advantage which may have been a mistake since I wasn't really able to "borrow" anything from existing work, had to do it all new.  Well technically my first effort was coloring the SIIG keys green to make a GHSS, hah.  The Kinesis Advantage was a bit more ambitious.  But it turned out pretty well.  It did take a while, working on it here and there a I had time, but I learned a lot.  By comparison, for example the recent Rosewill RK9000 wasn't nearly as difficult as a) I had learned a lot and b) there was work I could borrow from.

I was a little hesitant but finally just dove in and got started.  I wanted certain images and didn't want to wait around for someone to maybe do them for me.  If sealcouch was still around and whipping stuff up on demand I probably never would have tried it myself. So if you can pick it up then you can make whatever you want without depending on others and collaboration can be fun as well.

I started with the Kinesis Advantage, for a challenge, which may have been a mistake since I wasn't really able to "borrow" anything from existing work, had to do it all new.  Well technically my first effort was coloring the SIIG keys green to make a GHSS, hah.  On the other hand, it turned out pretty well and although it did take a while I learned a lot.  By comparison, for example the recent Rosewill RK9000 wasn't nearly as difficult as a) I had learned a lot and b) there was work I could borrow from.
