Realforce 88ub (45g topre)
« on: Sat, 25 April 2015, 17:07:42 »
So Ive had the keyboard for a few days and think Ive got a pretty good idea of what topre is along with the con and pro.
The keyboards Ive had so far are mostly Mx Red (MK50, K65, Shine 3). But the first and the one I had for the longest time is a Mx Black (6Gv2). Currently use a Mx Clear at work (G2Pro) that I trade my Ducky Mini that had Mx Brown. Also have loose switches so Ive tried all of them except some "legacy" and "clone" switches. Have also tried Razer/Kailh Green and Orange (review found here)
So far my favorite by far is Mx Red, I like it linear, light and silent :)

The keyboard

Not in love with the case, its slightly slightly lager than my Shine 3 TKL. The back feet down have rubber under them so it sits far less solidly on the table (compared to Shine 3). Weight wise it seems like its fairly close to the Shine 3. Upper right corner is the logo, would personally placed it centered like Corsair or not have it all. Would also have liked to have the seam under it instead of on the side, but that is minor
The case itself on top is has light texture to it, looks really good

The Switch: Topre (45g)

Its very different from any Cherry Mx switch Ive tried. Feels heavier than Mx Black with a super slight even bump around the activation point. The bump is nothing like the tactile of any Cherry Mx switch Ive tried, its more like a higher resistance than a click
Personally as someone who likes it light this is almost too heavy for me. Even using Mx Clear at work this feels really heavy
On the plus side it feels REALLY responsive and exact, with a activation point around halfway down before bottoming out.
The biggest plus must be how silent they are. Almost completely noiseless, thats the thing I like the most

The Caps

Somehow I dont get the same high quality PBT feel as my Ducky sets. Even my thin blank white set feels like its higher quality. Still a mile away from all ABS and stock caps. Compared to my Deep Space set or Shine 3 stock caps its MUCH MUCH more comfortable to type on
The print is really dark on black so the print barley visible, really like that. I prefer engraved caps over printed and this seems like the perfect middle ground
The only real screw up is the ABS Space. I really dont understand how you can sell a PBT keyboard with a ABS space. Then when you look at the price tag around $291 its kinda mind blowing

The pics!

TL:DR /Conclusion 8 / 10

Plus: Caps are nice, much better than any ABS set. Case has a nice texture. Very silent compared to Cherry Mx
Minus: ABS space, imo heavy resistance, price at $290 plus shipping, logo placement.

Topre PBT space bar IC thread here - that would remove one of your few minuses :)

To me 45g Topre (in HHKB) is much lighter than black, but a bit heavier than MX red (also 45g), but probably due to the different force curve.  I'd still like to try 55g Topre.  And I do prefer stiffer switches.

You pay for what you get - quality keyboard that will last you years and retain its resell value very well.

Yeah I had an 88UB (45g RF feels a bit lighter than 45g HHKB in my opinion, btw) and I felt that the switches were just a tad bit heavier than MX Reds, definitely not heavy compared to MX Blacks or MX Clears. Rowdy, you need to get yourself a 55g RF right away, mang. :P

Thanks a lot man, signed up the black/grey one. Still think its odd its not included but that would remove only real issue I have with the caps

At work right now and still find my Mx Clears far lighter than the 45g topre, guess Im more use to them but it still feels lighter. I think Im comparing the peak resistance to the avg, more even resistance and bump of the Cherry Mx swithc

I got it used and in not very pristine condition. Found both jam and chocolate within the keyboard, took two hours to clean and even with ISO and q-tips its not the level of clean I wish it was. But if it can handle that treatment and still work this well I almost think its indestructible :p

on a side note: who use their dirty paws, like an animal, with chocolate messy hands on a almost $300 keyboard?!

Guess that explains why he let it go for $115 shipped :)

Sounds like a fair price if it was in that bad condition.

115 shipped for a Topre, I wonder where in the world you can get that!
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.
