No, this is a known thing. It's probably most famous on the IBM M15, but there were also well-known NMB models like these that had it. They always go immediately, as it's a sought-after feature.

My late father-in-law was an accountant and split space bar was his preferred keyboard style. I think that they started making them in the mid-late-1990s.

So what was the logic behind the thumb-operated BS?
This keyboard would be wasted on Donald Trump, BTW, as he never retracts anything. However, a "blame the fake media" key would be handy.
