I've never used a 40-45% or ergo before, but I am super interested in this! Since I don't have any experience with layouts of this nature, I'll leave it to the veterans for input.
Will there be a non-hotswap PCB available? Not a deal breaker, but I would prefer one.
Love seeing Ergo. I would be more interested in this if I was more oriented to a 40% board, which I will in the future. Minivan is supposed to be dropping some kits soonish and I will pick one up and learn then, so let's see where this ends up in my timeline.
Otherwise, super cool idea. Not much a fan of the pad on the left because I value a symmetrical-looking board more than more keys, otherwise I'd get an 1800.
I also would like to see a different finish on the paint. That red looks too opaque. But maybe I just love the look of Ano and chamfered edges.
one with a smaller left side numpad might be pretty great
Glad to see this come to an IC. I’d be interested in 2.25 2.75 spacebars as those are pretty common sizes when you get a split spacebars kit.
I’m down. I love the Alice, but unfortunately can’t afford the mech market premium.
The left numpad would be a huge plus for this layout I think, especially when key Enter/+/- are on the right side of the left numpad. Care to say the name of the board in the photo?
I love the idea of a small form factor Alice. I know you don't have plans to include the numpad, but I wouldn't mind if you did.
Having a split backspace would be wise, but it would be cool to have the option of the 2u, if possible.
Adding a numpad is definitely something to look into as a future project. Maybe a 4x4? I guess we can call the one in the photos the Prime_EXL. I made 2 of them. One for work and one for home.
is there an ETA on shipping date? I want to know before i waste $ on another case.
I prefer layout with split space 2.0/2.25. It is more common than two 1.75 spaces m
would love a 45% alice! i prefer the 2x1u backspace. if you could make the 2x1u backspace with the bottom row from the 2u backspace, that'd be my pick.
the large num/macropad on the left is nice but i think it's too big for me personally.
As for the design/style, i've never had an integrated plate board so i'd be interested in trying one. I'm not sure if i like the rounded edges tho. your prototype looks like a plastic board because of them i think. maybe it's the glossy finish too.
How comfortable is this layout to actually type on? The Q and P, not to mention the mods on the outside, look like kind of a stretch.
Alice users -- thoughts?
I'm especially skeptical of an angled case with this layout.
How about adding some keys on the right side to be able to have [] and ;‘ as dedicated keys? Would also need a bigger right shift. A bit like the Lynx L50.
Definitely in for one as long as it’s <$200 USD. A 40% board with a decent amount of interest should make that feasible. Only other condition on my end would be color options. Less common colors like rose gold or forest green, or even some pastel colors other than the usual black/gray/silver would surely drive interest up.
This looks incredible and what I am looking for but is just probably out of my budget, what is your price estimate for this?
A 1.5u backspace would provide better compatibility with sculpted sets. The 2u backspace included in most base kits is R1, not R2. You wouldn’t be able to have a split backspace option though.
split backspace w/ option for 2u backspace
Super cool idea! Hope the final layout can be covered by a standard gmk set without additional kits.
Super cool idea! Hope the final layout can be covered by a standard gmk set without additional kits.
Little chance of that with the split spacebar, unfortunately. No matter what's chosen, you'll need spacebar kits.

Spacebars are actually easy nowadays. Spacebar kits are cheap and tend to hit MOQ.
So as I suspected it just doesn't really work having the option for 2u backspace and split backspace AND have kailh hotswap. So a decision needs to be made. Right now I'm leaning towards getting rid of 2u backspace in favor of hotswap. But I would love to hear some thoughts from others.
I think split backspace is best because like you said, R2 2u keys don't really exist and I don't like being forced to use even profile sets... Plus I'd like the extra key. As for Alps, what ALPS sets even support this layout? Just Lightcycle and Granite right? Seems like a lot of compromise (loose plate, no hotswap) for something very few people would be interested in.
... Could I make the suggestion of adding alps which means no hotswap, and 2u backspace?

Having both MX and Alps in an integrated and machined plate might be possible. Would have to pay around in CAD and figure it out. But the "pain in the ass" factor outweighs the number of people that would benefit from having it. If it we're a laser cut plate no problem. But not machined.
If we're going MX/Alps compatibility, cna I request that we go all the way so it's also compatible with Monterrey switches? This is available on some MX/Alps PCB's like the Minidox where the connectors look like this:I think split backspace is best because like you said, R2 2u keys don't really exist and I don't like being forced to use even profile sets... No no, my mistake. Just reread your previous response and you said that. Either way this is an awesome design and I'll prob join.
Nice! Hope to have some renders in more or less final form by new years. And maybe even an alpha prototype 3d printed.

This looks stunning, really hoping I can get in on this!
Have you finalized the layout for the whole board? Can you indicate the widths of all keys in the final design? (Trying to figure out what's needed to cover this with a sculpted keyset)
Keep up the awesome work, can't wait to see this come to GB! :thumb:
Has it been decided if the PCB should support hotswap? If so I think it will need some threads in the top of the case for the PCB to screw against the case.
South-facing hotswap sockets are a no go for me chief.
Perhaps too late, could we add a macro column to the left side? If so, could this let the USB be in the center?South-facing hotswap sockets are a no go for me chief.
yeah. Unfortunately it's a necessary evil to make room for the USB port. There isn't a good place for it in the middle without something looking off since the split is a little lopsided with more keys on the right.

Awesome, so excited to hear this board is coming along! I'm a huge fan of it and really hoping I'll be able to pick one up!
Have you thought much about colors yet or is it still too early for that?
ergo+45% = DREAM :thumb:
Looking real good! You weren’t kidding about getting this moving quickly!! :D
Sorry I missed most of the IC work, but glad to be here now!
Ergo 45 is right up my alley and should look dope with all these Space Cadet caps I have to put to use

Thanks guys! Pretty soon I need to figure out what colors everyone wants and get my hands on an actual prototype. This is taking longer than I expected but we're slowly making our way to GB time.

I'd love to see some sort of blue-gray or dark blue, but would also be happy with silver or dark gray if those are too difficult :)

I got 2 samples in the works. Trying for a dark gray and dark blue. But haven't yet heard back if I can get two different colors for a reasonable price.

I think if it’s going to be offered in one colour it would be best to stick with something neutral like grey, silver, or black. My vote would be for grey. If you’re going to offer multiple colours I think a red or minty colour would be cool.

I would like to offer 4 colors. Black, gray, blue and ?? This is all dependent on pricing. If 4 color choices significantly increases prices then one choice it is. Probably gray. I dont want this to be a super expensive board. Pricing for the PCBs (assembled in USA, Qty of 50) is $50/ea and that doesn't even include the sockets and their assembly. So might try to find a Chinese Fab to get costs down. . Things to work out.
Looking at the space65 gb most people went with black or grey. I think silver and blue were close for 3rd place and very few got red. It all depends on the tone of colour offered imo. I went with a red CA66 but that’s a nice wine red.I went with silver for the Space65, the gray was a little too dark for me.
I really don't know anything about the process of anodization, is it more expensive and difficult to be shades of a color? So like navy instead of straight up blue, or burgundy instead of red.
Really interested in this, just hoping it won't cost a fortune haha.
Even though you said you don't have an eta on when it will ship, am I right in guessing it most likely will run mid-late this year?

Is there a possibility of a full brass version?

Wow love it. As long as it is less than $200, I'm probably in.
** EDIT ** I got some preliminary pricing back and it definitely will not be $200 or less. A fair bit more. Not ready to share numbers yet as I don't have all the pieces in place.
I'm falling in love with this
Been eyeing this and really hoping I get in on this. Prototype already makes it yummy and happy that it's a single layout! :thumb:
aaaannnd......... Matcha pulls into the top 4 of colors lol.

I am wondering that could the USB port in center (position of old 3 leds) will be better (more comfortable) than on the left corner ?I thought about it, but I felt it wasn't quite right since if I centered it with the case, the port would be offset from the split in keys. Same goes if I centered the port with the spit.
And also if the 3 leds are in the middle will be easier to see when typing, it is more modern when stay in upper right corner but it harder to see I think.
Anyway, it is a very interesting project :)
I will be paying attention for updates, will be in for GB.
This looks great, I'd join the GB
This is dope, might be my first endeavor into ergo.
I would like to see the top bezel radius slightly tighter though

Any updates, by any chance?Still waiting on samples. The manufacturer has not done integrated plates in the past so I guess they have been experimenting on the best way to go about it so as to keep machining time to a minimum. Also they are having to fabricate custom fixtures to hold the parts in place. Last I heard they hope to have them done by the end of this week. No promises though.
Any updates on samples?

I definitely want one of these.
Looks great.
Very interested in this, depending on price!
in for 1. looks dope
I like this. :)
Definitely one of the projects I am most excited for at the moment!Seems like it. But then again I also expected to have the sames on hand a week or two ago. I'll just say I'll get the GB thread opened up as soon as I get the samples and both the machining and anodizing are good.
Do you think we’re still on track for a March GB or will it be a bit later?
when do you open The prime_E’s GB??As soon as I receive the samples and approve. They should be getting anodized this week and hopefully head my way sometime next week.
Unfortunate update: the anodizing facility won't do a custom matcha (aka green) unless there is a MOQ of 100 of that color so that is pretty much impossible. Color options will likely be black, gray, silver and red. Sorry.
rough machined case before any finishing or anodizing.
(edit: not sure why two images are showing...)
Looks great! So excited for this and it’s coming along nicely. Do you have any anodization sample chips from the anodized or are you going to do one of each for examples?

Thanks. I'm only getting samples in gray and red. Black and silver are pretty self explanatory and I don't think samples are really necessary considering their cost. when is this Gb opened? After I get the samples and am happy with them.
Have a rough guess at price?I would rather not say until I get final pricing for the cases and an updated price for the PCBs as it's been several weeks since I got PCB pricing and it's likely no longer honored. It won't be long now before I have pricing . Sorry.

oh god. good lord. please, spread the love for this. don't make this a limited run.Limited to 500 kits. Better hurry!
Final won’t have the pocket or extraneous holes, right? I hope not. In for this 100% though
Is there a limit to my purchase quantity?Nope.
Would be great to know the full dimensions of the board. I know it's a 40% but looks like it extends out a bit because of the design (forgive me if the info is there, I couldn't see it on any of the updates posts you did). Very exciting project though =D

Posted them in OP. No but they are making progress i think.
Nice! I think you forgot the album link though. Are you going to wait for the other manufacturer before opening up gb or are you pretty happy with these results?
The new pictures look great! Will the gap between the spacebar and the case be reduced or is it just the angle the pics are taken from? Thanks!. Yes it's a bit too big. Need to get out my calipers and see if it's my design or the manufacturer messed up.

Is it too late to make the switches sink a bit lower? It could be the reason why the gap seems so wide between the keys and the edges surrounding it.

"It's going to be expensive. I haven't worked out final pricing but all I can say right now is it's going to be over $300 but less than $330. Price breaks at certain MOQs."

:( pricing is a bummer for sure. that last bit is not to say that 80 is required to go to production. 50 or so will be the MOQ. 100+ will lend a small price break.
will probably in for 2 of these, at least one. 2nd one depends on the colors available so I could mix and match the top and bottom.
in for two
Wow really love the layout, and I'm keen to try a split non-Ortho 40%. That price is hefty for me but hopefully I'll have some cash ready. If I don't, I'd 100% grab the 3D printed version you mentioned in the reddit thread.Looking forward to 3D printed version also :thumb:

Great board!
- is there an eta on when will the gb start? (Or gb will start as soon as you decide which manufacturer to go for)
- is the quantity capped at a certain figure and raffle will be implemented when the sale exceeds the figure? (I remember the MOQ is 80?)
- will the stab be plate mount only or we can choose for ourselves?
Thanks for your time and effort!
will zfrontier be a proxy for this gb? :(No, but there will likely be a Korean based GB.

Watching the vid, I only just noticed the PCB has 'north' facing orientation for the switches. I know its close to GB time but is that 100% set (or is the other way impossible due to space constraints)? I've found that GMK R3 caps fouls on the switch housing for everything except BOX switches, so would really prefer to avoid that. They are north facing mostly due to space along the top edge for USB. And yeah, it's pretty much too late to change the PCB anyway.
Small update. The revised top part of case is shipping tomorrow.Sounds great

oh, that's nice, since it's a 2-piece kit, bottom can be reused. saved time prototyping!
btw, will there be a POLYCARB version? :D leaning on a mixed alu + poly top/bottom combo :D
I watched the prime e prototype build stream. It feels like its very difficult to plug in the switches, will this problem be fixed? The switch holes are a bit tight. Working on it.

that new sample looks perfect! this is ready!
final checks, then green?
My body is ready. At this point, any keyboard smaller than a 60% that goes into group buy is instantly accounted for in my budget

Damn I love it but I find it so expensive, I know it's the layout but more than 300 for a 45%... :'(Yep I agree. The cost of non-chinese manufacturing unfortunately.
I know $300 keeps getting tossed around, but I don't see a price estimate in the OP (it's marked off in the to-do list, however).
Also, maybe a noob 40% question, but would it be possible to get a keycap sizing list for the modifiers?

It will be $320 for the kit. Extra PCBs will be $40. There will be an option for either all white indicator LEDs or an RGB mix. The LEDs will not come pre-soldered.
Here's a pic that shows keycap sizing:Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/AnMR7nE.jpg)
Was hoping for little cheaper pricing. I'll have to pass. Really awesome keeb either way :)
Pricing sounds quite reasonable to me considering how much time and money you put into prototyping and also it being made stateside. I’ll be in for one and +1 PCB.
Will the indicator leds be surface mount?

Understandable. Thanks man.

The US based manufacturer got very busy and hasn't completed their sample yet. I just can't wait any longer and it doesn't look like they will have time to complete the production run in a timely manner. So I'm going with the Korean manufacturer that did the samples I'm been showing pictures of. They have made many high quality keyboards for various GBs and I trust their work.
The indicator LEDs are reverse surface mount. Just a fancy way of saying they're surface mount and the LED protrudes into a cutout in the PCB. You can catch a glimpse of them here:

Thanks for the layout, OP!
So, with a Korean manufacturer, does that drop the price or does shipping negate any manufacturing cost savings?
Is shipping included in the price? No sir.
Then do you have an estimated US shipping price?I'll try to update the posts with that today but in the mean time you can add a duck Raven/sidewinder to your cart and get an estimated shipping amount from that. I think they might be fairly similar in weight.
50$ for me, ****...I'm ashamed of US -> International shipping.
What time will the group buy open?
