[GB] Atom47 PCB for the Vortex Core - Round 1 (Completed)
« on: Mon, 08 January 2018, 17:26:18 »
Atom47 Group Buy

Current GB status
Every order has been shipped.

What is this?
This is a PCB designed especially for the Vortex Core 40% keyboard to be able to use QMK. Because let's face it, its programmability kind of sucks.
QMK however, does not suck. (Thanks to the community ;))

The PCB supports multiple layouts for those who are a bit more adventurous and want to have a custom plate made. It also supports RGB underglow and in-switch leds. There's a reset button under the spacebar and a caps lock indicator under the tab/caps key.

Layout options

Features
  • QMK Firmware
  • 6 Underglow RGB leds
  • In-switch leds
  • Through-hole micro usb connector (less likely to break off!)
  • South facing leds for the QMX/Zealencio users
  • Multiple layouts
  • Easily reachable reset button under the spacebar
  • cAPS LOCK INDICATOR

Pricing & Shipping
The PCB will cost you 35 dollars excluding shipping costs. SpaceCat design will be the proxy for the USA, Amtra5 will be the proxy for Australia and Mechboards will be the proxy for the United Kingdom.

Fill in the GB form to enter!
Thank you :)

I'd also recommend putting the price in the main post, as currently you have to click through to the form to see the price ($35).

For US orders should we place an order through the Google form or through Spacecat's website? I couldn't find a page for Atom47 on the Spacecat site

Thanx for making this, it is life saver for me! I like Core very much, but without solid programing options ... it is a little annoying to use.

Ordered one Atom47 of course.

I'm honered to be your first GB  :D

February 16th - GB ends, invoices being sent
March 10th - Invoices paid, PCB's ordered
March 20th - PCB's arrived and shipped a few days later to participants

This is just an estimate, but I hope I'll be able to get it to buyers before April 1st.

I can't wait for this. It will be really nice having the option of a staggered 40% in my rotation again, the lack of programming options really let the core down for me. Does anyone know of any options for replacement caps for this keyboard? The layout I've designed means the standard caps will be pretty much useless to me (I will be using the standard layout in terms of key placement and sizes though).

The sets from PrimeKB and some others including GMK Laser are compatible. Don't know of any others at the moment.

This looks awesome! I've not bought a pcb for a keyboard before, which components are already included/soldered and what would I need to get it working, other than the switches?

How do I cancel? Ignore the invoice?

I ruined the Vortex Core aluminum case with Dremel while removing a couple of stuck screws so I'm just going to harvest its MX Clear switches to use on a Planck.

There should be some sets on Aliexpress.

Every component is pre-soldered, so you only need switches and a plate.

Before all, thank you @maartenwut! I was looking for a 40% for months! I'm more active on reddit so I was a real stroke of luck when I have seen your message on Discord.

Since I'm starting in the 40% world, some recommendation of where we can buy a proper plate for this pcb?

Edit: I've already filled the form :)!

Cheers from Spain,
Angel

hehe nope, I have not the Vortex Core, but I feel dare and I want to do a handcrafted case and so on, but since I don't have a big knowledge about the plates on the market I would want to explore more options before taking the decision of making my own plate.

If I were making a universal plate for this PCB, to support all layout options available on that PCB, it would look something like this:

Edit: I think those screw mounting hole locations are correct, I would just need to confirm that with maartenwut. :)

Or you could do a "sandwich" style case, like this:

Googling around for a solution I luckily found this group buy the day before it closed.

After speaking with my proxy, I decided that all US and Canadian orders should be sent as a First Class Parcel. Canadian orders are going to be sent as First Class International Parcel. This means that the shipping method you choose will not matter if you're from the US or Canada.

I just finished sending everyone an invoice too :D
If you didn't get one, just email me at atomkeeb <at> gmail.com and we'll sort it out!

All orders for US & Canada will be shipped by SpaceCat Design as a First Class package.
All orders for the UK will be shipped by MechBoards UK as Royal Mail Signed For® 1st Class.
All orders for Australia will be shipped by Amtra5 as Parcel Post.
Shipping cost is included with the invoice.

For those who have not paid their invoice yet: you have to pay before the 10th of March or I'll consider your order cancelled.

Thanks again for your patience and thanks to the proxies!

A (screw head) is 4mm, L (thread length) is 5mm and the diameter is 2.5mm. You should be looking for an M2.5 screw.

Yes, and I will be selling leftovers of this round.

I have also ordered 20 prototypes before getting 100 of them, just to be safe. They should be here in a week or so.

Unfortunately I couldn't really keep to this schedule as I have been very busy with school but I will make sure to finish this GB as fast as possible.

Will there be any other components aside from the keyswitches and leds that we will have to solder on?

No, none at all. These are prototypes and it is much cheaper to solder those myself.

Any extras available to buy? Do you happen to know if someone makes this for the Vibe as well? Someone on reddit said that someone made one for the Vibe but I can't seem to find it.

Extra's will be available after the group buy. Also: the prototype works! I accidentally ordered one wrong component so new ones have been ordered and I'll sell those on mechmarket pretty soon after the group buy along with the extra's. Here's a pic of the usb port:

As you can see, it's ****ing perfect, like it's supposed to be there. I'm very happy with it and will order a hundred of these, pre-soldered. After that I'll ship them.

How does the stabilizer go into the plate? I am swapping mine out but cannot get it in. Does the bar go above or below the plate?

The bar is supposed to be under the plate, before soldering the switch in. There's also one way to get it in.

The prototype looks great! Thanks for keeping us updated even with the delays.

I was thinking of installing hotswap adapters from Zeal:
https://zealpc.net/collections/accessories/products/gold-plated-hot-swap-sockets-for-pcbs

Do you think the board is sturdy enough to withstand the insertion force of the initial installation? Also, are the solder holes standard sizing? I already got these shipped and I'm a little worried that they'll be too big/small to fit.

I've got no idea, but it should be fine.

Edit: Asked Zeal and according to him it should work with the standard size of 1.5mm, the standard from Cherry.

Also, are the solder holes standard sizing?

Yes, they have the standard diameter of 1.5mm.

I'll put the pcb design on github after shipping for everyone to be able to make their own case/plate.

Ah, thank you! I was attempting to make one just for the 7u layout but was getting extremely hesitant going through without 100% confirming I have the screw holes precisely where they need to be.

I'm getting a quote for the universal plate that was posted on page 1.

How many of these were manufactured, and how many were sold in the group buy? That will give me an approximate upper bound on the number of orders I might need.

There were about 85 sold during the group buy and there is interest for more.

You can count me in on that interest check. I don't feel like desoldering these switches just so I can get to the plate.

I designed my own plate files, but they have not been tested. Should be very accurate though. There are two versions: one which supports the fn1 and shift, and one which supports one 2.25u shift key. I recommend using plate mount stabilizers as pcb mounted stabilizers do not fit in the Vortex Core's case.

Here's a pic of the default one:

I got a rough quote on plates from a New York City vendor at about $45 each for a batch of 20. However they don't stock 1.5mm aluminum so that includes the cost of a big aluminum sheet that can make many more than 20 plates. I'll keep asking around to see if I can get the price lower.

Alright guys, here's the current situation:

The manufacturer used a different Micro USB connector. While they do just work fine, and are pretty sturdy, it's not the USB connector I had in mind. The manufacturer gives me the option to have them replace the connector, but that will probably cost a lot in shipping and import taxes. To give you somewhat of an idea, shipping from them to me was already over 150 USD. Here's a pic of the connector:

And this is the one meant to be on the boards:

The difference is in the four pins for securing the connector to the PCB. Look closely and you'll see that the current connector is soldered onto a hole.

Two options:
1. Use the connectors as is, because they're secure enough and we don't want even more delays
2. Spend a lot of money on shipping back and forth, causing even more delays. I'm not even certain if the budget allows for that.

What do you guys want?

Hey, so I finally got through to re-flashing the QMK since I had got an XD75RE and was looking into adjusting the layout of that.

So far, all went well reflashing the XD75RE.  But when it came to plugging in the Atom47 board, I just got the white lite on the caps lock, hit the reset button (also tried PN + right CTRL to go into reset) and got blinking white LED under caps lock, but the QMK Toolbox didn't see/connect to the Atom47 PCB.  Is there something that I am missing here?  I have atmega32u4, at90usb1286, atmega32u2, atmega16u2 as the microcontrollers.

I tried turning it off and on again and still no luck.   I'm having a fear it might be bricked, because I can't type on it anymore when I used to prior.  But nothing has changed since I was last using it to type on the default maps.  It was working, but just been shelved for a few weeks.

This is my first bit into QMK boards, so any bit of help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Well, went back and swapped USB cables... it worked.  /smacks head

But now the darn caps lock LED doesn't want to turn off.  What is turning on the white LED under the tab/caps lock?  It's not tied to caps lock (at least when I'm toggling it) so I'm a bit perturbed what it is.  Is it stuck on a layer or something?

Not sure what it was, but if you are using the configurator it's been fixed now.

Thanks for the update.  I'll give it a shot. Thankfully I had been a bit procrastinating on fixing the light being on and was just going to desolder it off.  I've been adjusting my key binds with the configurator but haven't flashed it to the board.  Been really liking it, the swapping of right shift and layer key was my favorite part, since it allowed me to do / and shift keys.

Thanks!

This would probably be solved pretty easily by moving the capslock indicator code to the keyboard instead of the keymap, but I don't want to do that because it would force that for everyone.

Is there going to be a round two of this GB?

If you haven't seen it yet, the IC (along with a prototype) for round 2 is going on.
