Well, our fearless leader gave me the go ahead to start these up again. It has been awhile since we had a monthly Geekhack DS, and I know a lot of us have been wanting one!
So, to kick it off we're going to go with red on white. Something simple, yet classy.
I dunno if it is just me, but I can't seem to fill out the form. It doesn't let me put in any information. :'(
I can't seem to get it. But I'm both on mobile and at work. Which is a recipe for disaster. I'll try again from home later tonight. :)I dunno if it is just me, but I can't seem to fill out the form. It doesn't let me put in any information. :'(
Hmmm, maybe try it again now. I had one order come in already, so it seems to be working, maybe.
for one set, is the $5 domestic shipping a flat rate? It usually costs me $2-3 to send a similar package that way. But, your GB your rules.
I'd buy this but can't really justify that shipping is more expensive than the actual item... I love purple though so lets see. When is the cut off for orders?
USPS is dumb. They just raised their prices a whole bunch, effective the 17th of this month. RIP Int'l shipping. :(
I don't see any purple color "BDE" on SP's website.
I do see a RDE that looks close to the color in your mock-up.
Nevermind. I see above the mock-up where you have RDE, but under it it says BDE.
Will there be a geek wack option?
Make sure this is over before CPT gets back. I'm positive he doesn't want a purple ALPS GH cap.

Does this mean that every month there is going to be a different color?
And what if I don't want an ALPS cap? Can I get 2 MX?

That is the plan. I don't know if I can sustain it once a month, or if I will eventually do them bi-monthly.And what if I don't want an ALPS cap? Can I get 2 MX?
No, but you can trade with someone. :)

If jdcarpe is ok with this I will order and accept your trade.
In.I bought two sets so I have another MX to trade for an Alps. Let me just see first if jdcarpe is ok with trades.
I don't need the Alps cap, if anyone wants to trade their MX for an Alps let me know
I got my order placed! If anyone is having trouble with the form, use tab to navigate to the fields. For whatever reason it wasn't editable otherwise.I used the "new" Google Forms for this, but I probably should have stuck with the old version. If you click in the field above where it looks like you should click, does it let you enter data then?
If it were only a couple orders, I would be fine with it, but then everyone is going to jump in and it becomes a logistical nightmare for me. It's just me doing this out of my home. I don't have a team or anything. :)In.I bought two sets so I have another MX to trade for an Alps. Let me just see first if jdcarpe is ok with trades.

I am also having trouble with the form. It loads, but the fields are greyed out and not editable. Tried on both Chrome and IE...not luck.

I was wondering the same thing. I would be up to get the monthly or bi-monthly caps, more so if shipping became a bit more Canadian-friendly (I understand you're not at fault). This will be my first GH key, so I'm pretty stoked. :p
Ordered ;D Now all I have to do is find an alps board. If you're looking for a modern board I would recommend the KBP V80-MTS. It comes with clicky, tactile (they call it quiet click), and linear variants depending on what you like. KBP also makes a 60% variant if you want that. Otherwise there are some really cool vintage Alps boards out there if you're into that; some even come with really cool and interesting switches.

Why does it have to be DCS. It's by far my last favorite profile. Next time, I think JTK would make a very nice option instead. Especially since they already have the moulds.

I'm not the best person to give recommendations regarding vintage boards since so far I've disassembled all of the ones I have ever bought. Building your own though is definitely a possibility if you can find a PCB. I think jdcarpe has been eluding to a GB for his JD45 which would be a relatively cheap (maybe probably) and fun way to introduce you to Alps.

Once this GB has closed I would love to see how many Canadian orders there are - for something this small I would probably be able to do a proxy to save us on the shipping :thumb:

Ps. Congrats on the 20k rowdy, I must have missed it :thumb:

You didn't put the country, but I see that from your forum profile. All good, then. :)
**** it - placed my order.
Pls don't forget to switch Sean's MX with my Alps, if he still wants to trade.

Since this is a fundraiser, and since jdcarpe is including the Alps caps to encourage Alps use, I personally don't want to trade anymore. Sorry about that.
totally missed this, great to see about to place my order good sir
You can ship them in a bubble mailer first class for 6.55 good sir and the tracking works, sometimes it just doesn't show up for some reason
So, I checked USPS today, and it seems that the minimum international shipping cost, using untracked First Class mail, will be $13.50 for each int'l shipment. Now, I'm not going to charge more than the $10 listed in the OP, because that's already asking a lot of our international members to pay, when the shipping cost is double the price of a set of caps. What this means is that the group buy as a whole will make up the difference in shipping cost. This works, of course, with a small-ish amount of int'l orders. If I were to see a large influx of int'l orders, I would have to charge actual shipping instead. I really hate USPS right now.
$10 for Canada doesn't seems right, for a whole Keyboard w/ tracking I paid $6USPS just went up like 30% as of today. And whoever shipped you that keyboard for $6 obviously didn't charge you the full amount they paid to ship it. Or they built some of the shipping cost into the sale price. :)

I will leave the order form open until the 22nd, with all payments due no later than the 31st. Based on my calculations, this GB should yield ~1 Click Clack to the geekhack mod team. :thumb:
Just updated my signature in the hopes it can help with the hype and get us over 300.
sweet! is this going to be a monthly thing? That is the plan. Seems to be running smoothly so far.
That is the plan. Seems to be running smoothly so far.
Next month I may have to increase shipping price for int'l orders, or use proxies. I just hate using proxies, because that increases the chance something might fail somewhere. Int'l shipping would need to increase to about $15 per order. Of course, I could always set it up to ship to int'l peeps quarterly, if they want to participate in 3 months worth of GBs, with combined shipping....
That price IS for bubble mailers! :eek:That is the plan. Seems to be running smoothly so far.

$15 O_O
I know you've covered this, but is there really no way to send bubble mailers internationally? My local post office never hassled me about it. And if you print your own shipping on stamps.com or via Paypal, they'd probably make it through fine.
Oh man! Soooooo close to 300 caps. Surely there are 5 more orders that will come in before tomorrow. Let's do this! :cool:If there is a price break at the 150 mark (since different stems are probably different MOQs) then even buying out the difference might actually mean more cash for GH.

Yes, different stems are different MOQs, unfortunately. I will be buying some extras in case of shipping damage or whatever. I think the donation amount will remain in the neighborhood of what I listed, just because I didn't markup the caps a great amount.Oh man! Soooooo close to 300 caps. Woop woop! My first GH GB order :D
And supporting GH along the way - nice one :)Yeah! Really happy bout that :D Really wish I was part of this community earlier :[ Can't wait for the cap!! :D
Order form is closed. If anyone would still like to place an order, just send me a PM.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Will post updates regularly.
I just tried to use the form to no avail. Hopefully some of the group alternate ways to use this form will work for me.
Putting a key in a bubble wrapped envelope is maximum 4$ international non-tracked cheapest according to my relatives in America.
Senor carpe, I sent two standard caps to Malaysia in a bubble mailer for $5 the other day
Dimensions, Shape, Flexibility, and Uniform Thickness (201.4.0)[/list]
Dimensions:
Minimum: more than 11-1/2 inches long, or more than 6-1/8 inches high, or more than 1/4 inch thick.
Maximum: 15 inches long, 12 inches high, and 3/4 inch thick.
The length of a flat-size mailpiece is the longest dimension. The height is the dimension perpendicular to the length.
Shape: rectangular, with four square corners, or with finished corners that do not excced a radius of 0.125 inch (1/8 inch).
Flexibility and deflection: flat-size pieces must meet flexibility criteria in 201.4.3 and the deflection criteria in 201.4.6. Flats mailed at saturation or high density prices or flats mailed at basic carrier route prices and dropshipped to DDUs do not have to meet deflection standards. All other flats not meeting deflection standards are subject to prices as stated in DMM 201.4.7.
Uniform thickness: the contents must be uniformly thick so that any bumps, protrusions, or irregularities do not cause more than 1/4 inch variance in thickness (201.4.4). When determining variance in thickness, exclude the outer edges of a mailpiece (1 inch from each edge) when the contents do not extend to the edges.
Mailpieces that do not meet the standards for flexibility in 201.4.3, for uniform thickness in 201.4.4, or for polywrap in 201.4.5, must pay applicable prices as follows:
- First-Class Mail—parcel prices.
- Standard Mail—parcel prices.
- Bound Printed Matter—parcel prices.
thanks for putting this together... this was my first GB ever and I can't believe how organized and streamlined everything was.
You guys are very welcome! I want again to thank everyone who is participating in this buy, both for supporting Geekhack, and for making everything from orders to payments run smoothly.
I already placed the order for the keycaps with Signature Plastics, and according to Melissa, the lead time for production of these is only four weeks. There is a good chance I can start shipping these to you guys before the end of February!
Look for February's buy to start in about a week. I think I can keep the price structure the same next month. We had great support this month, and I expect nothing less each month going forward. I will probably add the option for international buyers to combine shipping for up to 3 orders, to save on the high cost of shipping compared to the keycap sets.
I will be making the donation to Geekhack soon, which this month will total $250. Thanks again, everyone!

Great news, everyone! The keycaps are here! (I placed the order a little early, since I knew what tier we would hit).
I should be able to sort and pack these during the weekend of 20/21-Feb. Then I plan to start shipping them out the following week.
And I already made the $245 donation to Geekhack. Thanks again, everyone, for all your support!

Great work! here's hoping we increase the donation total each month :)
Great work! here's hoping we increase the donation total each month :)
Funny thing about that. Donations to Geekhack aren't tax deductible, AFAIK. That means that, while I'm not keeping that amount each month, it is going to be reported to the IRS as "income" at the end of the year. Since I don't have any way to offset that "income" with an expense for Carpe Keyboards, I will probably end up owing a tax liability at the end of the year. I may have to start holding some of that amount back, to pay in federal income taxes. :(
Oh wow that sucks! I get why you would need to do that, and if you do I respect that decision and as long as most of it goes to GH it's all good!Great work! here's hoping we increase the donation total each month :)

Ah, good to hear! I was beginning to wonder if any international orders were being received yet. Everything shipped a while ago, except for those few who requested combined shipping.
