Is this why if I click a link to geekhack I can connect fine but if I just type the URL in I get a refused to connect message?

This is definitely an inconvenience. Is there anything you can do client side to avoid this?

Ya now that I think about it, it only happens on mobile. When I'm at my PC it's fine.

The SSL certificate is not installed on the GH server correctly. This can be verified here: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=geekhack.org.  The certificate chain is incomplete.
