So Chobopants' white-on-black PBT Filcos got me to wondering if there's ever been a run of custom keycaps with the Rebel/Imperial Logos:

And if not, THERE SHOULD BE!!! Personally, I'd frickin love an imperial board, black bezel, white keys with black/gray lettering, and the windows and/or escape key being the imperial logo. I'd use that board with a permanent erection.

I want a key set in Aurebesh:

The reason why I found this board was that I wanted to mod a keyboard into a Star Wars-themed keyboard.

I'd be more excited about white on black, but I'm in general interested in Empire 'windows' keys. Or Star Wars themed keys in general.

I think the three colors we'd need are Black on White (for black kb's with white keys), White on Black (for the reverse), and Black on Red (to match the Imperial Guard colors). You can do Red & White too if you want to rock the Rebellion colors, but who wants to do that :-P

Depends on the red for the keys. There's a chance I'd prefer red on black to black on red. But like I said, depends on the red.

Such imperial stuff would be great for my das (which is in the mail) since people already call it das vader anyway.

The Group Buys subforum is littered with great ideas that never saw the light of day.

Amen to that. But I'd be in for 1 of each if you do it. I would say to keep it simple you need the following color combos:

  • black-on-white (imperial)
  • white-on-black (imperial and rebel)
  • red-on-white (rebel)
Personally, I think the red on white would look pimp. And white for the red-on-white should be a really BRIGHT white, like the WCK from here:

I know escape keys are everyone's favorite group buy item, but what about getting these in control keys (Filco/Rosewill/Leopold) so that I can have two imperial logos or two rebel logos CONTROLLING my keyboard. :)

Replacements for the Windows keys would be perfect... as Microsoft has been likened to an Evil Empire ...

The Imperial logo is a little bit off. Most importantly, within the innermost circle, the white and black segments should be the same size.

Here is a close-up photo of an original helmet from the Star Wars movies, taken by a fan during an exhibit. I think that it is from a Death Star gunner's helmet.
Note that the decal has been cut on the right side for better fit on the spherical surface of the helmet.

The proportions are quite easy to see, however.

Somebody should just post the Signature Doubleshot ESC key pricing at different volumes.  I only got quotes for the spherical key style.

$50 Setup fee
You supply a SVG file (vector graphics only)
Cherry MX Sphericals (like their Novelty keys but with Cherry MX stem)

Quote
50 pcs $2.43 / each
75 pcs $1.75 / each
100 pcs $1.41 / each
250 pcs $0.80 / each

The setup fee is only $25 per graphic.
$1.21 for 100 keys (in Round 3 it went down to $0.49 for a 1-unit key, no matter how many (25 minimum)).

There exist spericals (DSA-family) which a low profile which is the same accross rows.

The high profile (SA-family) differs accross rows, except that there exist only row 3 keys larger than 1 unit (ie stagering is only for 1 unit keys).

Ugh, what a mess. Does that mean that DSA has the proper (like DCS) modifier sizes?

DSA is all rows are the same, like IBM, which is great for Dvorakians and Colemakiens, etc.
There exist all modifier sizes. Could be a problem with specific space bars.

SA all rows are different, but keys larger than 1 unit exist only in Row 3. I hopefully get test samples for the whole keyboard soon, so I can test if it is OK to have the modifiers all from row 3, or not.

Is it possible to get DSA samples, too? The problem is, if DSA can't populate all Filco modifiers and spacebar, the difference in height will be most likely pretty disgusting and annoying.

I put up both just so people could see what it would look like in either color.

Are there any other requirements for the svg image?  Such as that there only be one shape, or all lines be continous? I kind of cheated on the design and it works visually but I'm not sure if it would translate well to a CNC machine.

If you look at the black on white image...all of the "white" shapes are actually traced shapes.  The black is created by those white shapes being laid over a "black" circle.  That black circle is a little larger than the outside white shapes giving the appearance of a black ring on the edge of the logo.

I'm not sure if that is enough for Signature to work with, or if I need to outline that outer circle shape as well.

Agreed.

I've been lurking here for a while and I still haven't figured the group buys.  I'm under the impression that there are extras sets of keys from the group buys that are for sale, but there's no obvious way to tell.

Maybe instead of a forum approach the group buys should each get their own wiki page?  Can you do polls on a wiki page?

If that would be cheaper than a custom run from SP, sure. When is round 4 starting, anyways?

Even more 'international friendly'?

I supported spacial layouts for the following countries:

That may be TOO international friendly.  I visited Colemakistan once, locals aren't nearly as nice as the Dvorakies.

I realize Texas would like to consider themselves a separate country, but it's a little too late.  They missed the annexation party by over 100 years.

As for the Star Wars keys, I'm in on any that someone wants to make.  Maybe clickclack can make a Spirit of Jedi series.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Signature Plastics can do anything special (read: double shot) with the space bars, unless pad-printing is okay.

Can't do 2-shot space bars?  That's just lazy on their part.  The space bar is the biggest individual canvas on the keyboard.  It seems to be a problem with Signature Plastics.  There are people here who would spend $100+ on a set of fancy keys, and yet we have to go to them with ideas for keys?  If they aren't actively selling keys to us then someone isn't doing their job.

Surely there has to be someone else in the U.S. who does keyboard keys.  If I had more free time I would have already pulled the trigger on an injection molding machine.

And it is a cantina.

From what I understand, it's not a question of companies that make keys (because there are others) but a question of who can do double-shot keys and there doesn't appear to be others in the U.S. from what I have seen. Most other key cap manufacturers use screen printing, laser or etched/filled methods of doing the keys, none of which are as durable as double-shot. Dye sublimation (like on Topre keys) is highly durable, but the printing color has to be darker than the key cap color (meaning, no white on black). Kind of leaves you with few options. But I agree, SP should have somebody that's actively cultivating relationships with the modder communities. It could be a good, steady source of income for them.

I agree w/ you.  Those colors look great.

Imperial key:  Black on White, White on Black and if possible, Red on White and White on Red would be amazing.  You know, I can also see that grey (GSC) working well, too.  I'm assuming you'll have some sort of vote for the final colors, right?

It shouldn't be that hard.  I found an Aurebesh TrueType Font file and that should make transition to svg easy--should is the key.

However, an Aurebesh keyboard would be just short of flying a geek flag in my office, but maybe they already know.

I believe it costs something like $25 to create each custom legend, plus the regular cost of making the caps once the mold exists.  So you'd need a pretty large group of people buying in to make it economical.

I'm asking WASDK how much a simple Aurebesh Set would be... maybe some cool SW themed pics on the modifiers... since the font is GPL (afaik), there wouldn't be any copyright issues...

If its too expensive, it could even become a group buy (1.50$ per cap on 50 orders > ~50$ for the Alpha set).

Am I missing something here?

I read the earlier posts as saying that WASD keyboards (check the vendor forums for details) will make you a set for $60.
If you think that is cheap go get 'em tiger.
No need to wait for a GB.

But maybe I am missing the point of what you were saying?
