Title: More geekhack keys
Post by: iMav on Tue, 25 May 2010, 08:19:38
I have received some donations of additional geekhack keys and will be providing additional opportunities for members to acquire them.  What I would like to know first is who all is still interested in acquiring one of these keys?  (please don't respond if you already have a geekhack key in your possession)

No need to plead your cases nor feign humility at this time.  Simply PM me your mailing address if you are interested.  For the purposes of this give away, everyone is considered equally worthy as long as they express interest.

I will be collecting addresses until 2359 (US/Central time) Friday night (28 May 2010).  At that point, no one else will be considered and the next phase of the giveaway will begin.

Note, it's not THE geekhack key...it's a geekhack key.  A black and orange one would be nice.  This one just happens to have been produced white and red.  :)

Another one was created white and green for the Siig minitouch offering.

It was probably produced in red simply because that is a very popular color for the Esc key.

Thanks for the generosity of iMav and the Geekhack community!  I will treat it one of my very precious and swear not to abuse it (e.g. will not post its pics on other forums).

But no point I could get it for free, particularly I am just a foreign new member.  I just got 2 sets of Ducky black-on-black keycaps for MX switch yesterday, I would like to donate one of them to this community for expressing my appreciation.

I will send it to iMav as soon as I've got the GH keycab, thanks once again:)

This is a customized 108-key version for Ducky 108 keyboards (http://kbtalking.cool3c.com/article/16372), I wouldn't compare it with those of Topre, but better off let iMav or other experienced members to figure it out:)

If our fellow member is also interested in knowing more about the PBT ones (http://kbtalking.cool3c.com/article/16307), I can also send you a set or two for review (for free).  I'm sure the resellers/vendors here will be very happy to help, if you like to buy after all:P

P.S. I earnestly hope my gratitude wouldn't affect the normal business of the resellers here.

Yes certainly, it will be convincing if they are reviewed by a member like you.

Can you allow me to say your observation really,,, make me speechless, your last question about the dome 2-shot keycap of G80-1863 hasn't got answered yet, (I have been doing lots of asking around).

Can I suggest sending the 2 sets of PBT keycaps  (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=5065244498) together with the Ducky keycaps to iMav first, and then seek his help to forward them to you in US? I think this will be a more cost effective way to ship them, and you don't have to take the risk of disclosing your address to a new comer.

pang's so modest, I've been dealing with him to get a Ducky keyboard shipped over and it's been the most pleasant online buying experience I've ever had, the board should be here within the next day or so. New comer or not, he's a great member of this community, which I'm contemplating running away from once I get my board lest I end up giving into this unshakable urge to buy a topre.

Pang is great.  I am in the process of trading him a new Ducky for a new Endurapro.  I've already received the Ducky and he has been very patient with me getting the Eudurapro to him.  (delayed from Unicomp due to some other items I added to the order)

I've got an FK-5001 waiting for its GeekHack key now...however, bit of a problem. The profiles of the keys on this are wonky...and the Esc key is oversized. It'll be a challenge finding a spot to put the key.

Thanks iMav for being so generous :)

I presume the key profile of the Alps one is identical to the Cherry one? Looks the same in photos, just wanna be sure though.

Btw, Bosch used to make good stuff, but that's at least a decade ago before it was bought by Siemens and people went crazy for cheap junk!

Uhm? Haven't heard that. And Wikipedia claims they're still owned by the Bosch Foundation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Bosch_Stiftung) - which is why Bosch is one of the few brands I care about.

I think Robert Bosch GmbH is still independent, but this joint-venture thing (BSH) they did for home appliances is now mainly lead by Siemens (decision wise) for some time already. Well, I could be wrong, as I got this info mainly from hearsay (I work for Siemens). But as we talk about it... When we dropped production of mobile phones, some big bug made the statement "We can build mobile phones that are expensive but work for 5 or more years, but people want mobile phones that are cheap and break after 2 years (most people get a new one when the contract ends after 24 months), others can do this better" :D

Thank you for the wonderful birthday present, iMav! I'm turning 19 today, got a letter in the mail from Wisconsin. I thought for a moment that it was a card from my cousin Becky, but she moved to Florida a year ago. I open it up, and what do I find but a Geekhack key?

Excellent (if perhaps unintentional) timing. :D Thanks!

Actually, I smuggle the coffee in the keys; that's Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee, but I just say it's "cheap coffee used as padding for protecting the keys", and customs are none the wiser!

Or maybe I just thought it would look nice :) I'm quite happy with the photo, actually.

Sadly, the Geekhack key is sold out, at least from its originator, although some people here may have bought extras.

As I understand it, Geekhack keys were only made for Cherry keyboards. Somehow, though, Ripster has a picture of one on a model M13 IBM buckling spring tenkeyless.

I was just lamenting my own lack of foresight about this over on the Custom Keycaps thread.  I am really regretting ignoring the impulse to get one of those despite the fact that I didn't have an Alps board at the time.

(Sigh...When will I learn that little voice is usually right? I tend to get into more trouble when I think too much before acting.)

I got a HUGE wave of requests for these.  So much so, that we should probably do a new order (as I don't have even close to the numbers available to cover the requests).  Depending on demand, we are looking at $6 shipped in the US and $10 shipped international.

Please send me a PM with the following info if you are interested in this group buy:

Subject:  GH key group buy

Specify the number of keys for each switch type (Alps or Cherry).  Also specify whether you are able to pay via paypal.  Finally, please provide me with your name and mailing address.

DO THIS EVEN IF WE HAVE HAD PREVIOUS CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING GEEKHACK KEYS!!  :)

I'm harvesting addresses and keyswitch type from my PM's right now.  If you didn't include your name with your address, please resend (I'm deleting all PM's that didn't provide the requested info...because, frankly, they are pouring in and I don't have the bandwidth to reply to each one requesting additional information)

ah I needed that info, without hope for a response I included it in my PM.
3$ per extra sounds about right.

Question:

Is thise a pure red-esc geekhack order? Or would it be possible to also order the green G and H key or maybe some blank keys in lavender or whatever colour?

IF that would be possible would it be necessary/desirable to find out if we can get e.g. 25 ppl to order a set of 4 blank lavender keys so we get a order of 100 for one key type?

If iMav doesn't want to make this order get out of hand and keep it strictly red-escape geekhack I totally understand. Just was wondering if ... :D

So wait, on pricing I'm still not sure - I think, if I want 2 red cherry keys and 2 red alps keys  (since if we do a new run I'll just take a lesson from last time's dumbness  and get an extra of each) , that would be 6+3 each set and a total of 18 for all four.  Is this correct?

And if so what pp address is this sent to?  or will we get a response to PM with that necessary info?

Maybe it would be much more simpler to have a site where people can just place orders.
Or have Signature Plastics sell them (endorsed by GH), small percentage of the royalty to be contributed towards GH site subsidies.

That would be sweet. More generally, it'd be great if somewhere had a selection of custom keycaps available to buy singly. Signature Plastics link to the pimpmykeyboard (http://pimpmykeyboard.com/) site which has some amusing ideas (I quite like the "Panic" button), but they all appear to be stick on novelty keys rather than keycap replacements.

Just use blank keys and put a little booger on J.  Might match the color too, if you do it when you have a cold.  Winter's coming, so that should be easy.

These shipped this last week and members have started to receive them.  (don't panic if you haven't received yours yet...may take another week, depending on how far away you live from me)

You all should receive a handwritten note from me with your total.  Just to clarify, the paypal address to send the monies to is:  herzog [at] uhhh [dot] org

I expect everyone to post pics in this thread (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=10153).

I may have a few left, gotta check.  Lots more people asking...so maybe I get another batch.

BTW, several of you didn't send the money as a gift, as requested.  That's why I sent the the keys before asking for payment, so you wouldn't need the safety blanket of being able to file a dispute (and to save me the paypal fees).

Also, several have yet to pay...which I should have expected, but was hoping wouldn't happen (although it is very likely that not everyone has received theirs yet).

Anyways, I'll check what I have left later this week and see if I can fulfill the outstanding requests.

Of course!

DO THIS EVEN IF WE HAVE HAD PREVIOUS CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING GEEKHACK KEYS!!  :)

Hey iMav,

I received mine over the weekend. Haven't paid yet as I was extremely busy, my apologies. Will do so during the course of the week (and post a pic).

I am from Germany as you know so is there even an option for me to send the money as a gift so I can save you the paypal fee? Would actually prefer to do that as my paypal account is way old and I'd have to set it up again first.

Cheers,

Senor_Cartmenez

Last time I checked, I could choose to take processing and currency exchange fees from your account with my European PayPal account.

That, or it didn't tell me that WhiteRice was going to foot the bill after all.

The following members sent requests in after the last batch was sent out (and will have to wait till I receive the next batch):

AvroArrow (http://geekhack.org/member.php?u=1911)
bakageta (http://geekhack.org/member.php?u=6064)

blue6249 (http://geekhack.org/member.php?u=6117)
qnoxluke (http://geekhack.org/member.php?u=4301)

I need to tally up numbers (how many cherry, how many alps) and see what I need to order.  If you want some and are not on the list above, now is the time.  (if you PM'ed me info and did not receive keys nor are on the list...then you were simply missed and should re-PM me the relevant info)

We've got plenty of requests for Cherry keys to justify an order...however, we only demand for 6 Alps keys.  So unless there is a surge of requests for the Alps geekhack keys, I'm going to have to hold off on that order.

I will be PM'ing you all with instructions for payment.  Due to the low percentage of members actually paying for the last batch, I will be asking for payment up front.

(note, I gave away around 200 geekhack keys previous to this last batch...so if you think I am trying to make money on this, you are crazy)  :)

There are some things coming up for Topre (not from me), so keep your eyes peeled.

Actually, it is going to be too much of a pain in the butt to PM everyone individually.

My paypal address is herzog [at] uhhh [dot] org.

If you want Cherry geekhack keys, send me money (as a gift, if you have that option).  Somewhere in the message, put "geekhack X" (where "X" is the number of keys you want).  Also include your geekhack alias.

Same pricing as before:

USA:  $6 for the first key, $3 for each additional key.
non-US:  $10 for the first key, $3 for each additional key.

Also make sure there is a valid shipping address associated with your account (feel free to put it in the message).

Shame on anyone who hasn't paid for keys they got!  (EDIT >> that were supposed to in the recent batch, that is.  This does not apply to hose that were sent previous to that one...)
I have to make a deposit first, but I will make a donation (albeit a meager one as I have no income atm)  to offset some of the deadbeats.  It was very kind of iMav to make this place available to us, as well as showing great faith in people by sending us those without payment up front. and stiffing him is no way to repay that... So pay up, people!
