Keyboards / Re: Is someone here, who quit the hobby and is only lurking now?
« Last post by Rhienfo on Mon, 06 May 2024, 18:20:21 »
Thank you two for sharing your thoughts on this topic. A snowblower community? OMG there really is nothing on this world that can't be turned into a hobby :D

For me the most time consuming part of the keyboard hobby is research. Searching for the next best thing, researching on others ideas and how they work out. Of course building stuff your self can be pretty time consuming too, but there is just sooooo much to discover. I mean how many switches are out there?!

That's not a problem I have now, I kinda know what I want now, and don't really deviate from it, I'll probably just use cherry blacks, browns or like gat x or nixies with like tx springs and a dry lube and nothing else really for all the other few boards that I want to get. For boards and keycaps I just browse geekhack and whatever gets sent in like discords and such. Once you know what you want it's gets a lot easier.

depends, keyboards gone, artisans? that **** is crack

Actually so true about resin

The artisan panels from Keycon 2024 have been uploaded! Apologies for the audio on the first recording, I was dealing with a bit of feedback that couldn't be corrected until after it had concluded. More info on them available in the link, but here are the panels and who the panelists for each were:

Artisan Panel #1 - Bogan Caps (Arium), Hello Caps (Hello?), LevelCaps (9999hp), and Rubrehose (badchad)
Intro to Artisan Making - Bogan Caps (Arium), PrimeCaps (DanklyFrank)
A Visual History of Artisans - PichaelThompson, Rmendis and CPTbadass from Tactile Zine
Artisan Panel #2 - Hunger Work Studio (Binge), Maison of the West (R3wfio), Mastonon (Mastonon), PrimeCaps (DanklyFrank and Lisabella), and special guest GAF (Kudos)

KBDfans now has an IC for PBTfans Lucy - https://kbdfans.com/collections/interest-checks/products/pbtfans-lucy

They say it will be dye-sub PBT. Did you change, or is their IC incorrect?

Keyboards / Re: Sonnet or Zoom 75, help me choose

I don't personally own a Sonnet, I run an Envoy, but I have used a couple Sonnet builds and absolutely love it. I used one with a brass weight and POM plate running Oil Kings and it was smooth as hell. I would say that the extra price you pay for a Mode keyboard is definitely worth it, the build quality and style of the sonnet are top tier.  :thumb:

The only vendors I'd trust for this are novelkeys, cannonkeys, omnitype, oblotzky, kbdfans, prototypist, dailyclack, clickclack, and prototypist.

Get two of those on board, and you're fine. You're not going to get two of those on board.

I own one AlohaKB set; Trailblazer.

I'm not really trying to rain on your parade or be negative, but it seems to me that this is NOT an interest check.

This is an advert. You're going to sell this kit whatever anyone here says or how many say they want to buy it, and I don't think you're going to take on board any input.

Keyboards / Re: Simple Questions, Simple Answers (FAQ in the OP)

I F'd up the top housing of a soldered in switch (complicated to explain; please just take that info, as it is). The switch is still functioning, but wonky.

Q: Can I swap out the top housing of a switch from the top-side without desoldering it?

Some plates have notches cut out on either side of the switch to allow the top housing clips bend outward. I haven't seen those in quite a few years though. If the plate is contacting the switch on all four sides, you're going to have to desolder. That said, it's a pretty simple operation and a great excuse to learn to solder. You got this!  :thumb:

Thank you! Didn't know about the plate specifics. But I have to say, I soldered the switches in by myself, with led free solder and desoldering this is a 50/50 chance damaging the PCB because it's almost impossible to get all the solder out.

It's amazing how much of a difference quality solder makes. I usually go with a 63/37 flux core solder which has the advantage of being eutectic -- a single, lower melting point that avoid that "gooey, semi-fluid" solder state you find on some cheaper solders.

For desoldering, I'd recommend getting a good solder pump with a soft tip (hard plastic tips on solder pumps never seal well around the component, IMO). I went through so many cheap suckers before finding the "Engineer Solder Sucker" on Amazon. I always add an extra dab of leaded solder before sucking just to make sure everything's good and melted. It's also more mass for the sucker to grab onto, in my experience.

TY! I found that pump. Might give it a try or.... I use this wobbly switch to build the next board :-X
