Entire Column of Keys on ErgoDox - Fail
« on: Sun, 06 April 2014, 13:08:49 »
Dear Geekhackers,

Please help! I finish soldering my ergodox keyboard last night and an entire column of keys on the right hand does not work.  This is the side with the teensy so that is good i guess. I assume that this is probably caused by one of my solder joints on the teensy being sub par but i am not sure. I have looked at both sides of the teensy and all the joints look groovy.  Could something else cause a column not to work?  The column that is problematic is the third from the left on the right hand half.

I am thankful this is on the right hand and not the left. there are so many more variables with the left hand (trrs, i/o expander, etc).  Guys please help me i really want to get clickin on this bad boy. I got my round 4 SA set ready to go on it (plus some random SA Caps from crap bags).

So teensy right?  how do i test this stuff with my multimeter?  i have this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EVYGZA/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In all likelyhood you have a bad joint at one or the other end of the pin which connects that column on the PCB to the teensy.
Add a little flux, and reflow both joints and try again. Post well lit, focused close ups of both sides if that doesn't work so that we can see what you've got.

I'm referring to the two joints which share a wire/pin and serve to connect the ergodox keyboard PCB and the teensy PCB.

OldDataHands I am not sure what you are talking about. Do my images help at all?

Highlight reel (more photos are inside album):

Here is the back of the right hand teensy.

Here is the front of the right hand teensy:

Here is the column that doesnt work.  It is SW#:4.

looks like i am good now. thanks to the fellas on IRC.  It appears that i didnt have enough solder on the front teensy pins. so i reheated them bastards up and added just a tiny bit of solder.

excellent!

For posterity:
many needed more solder, most of the teensy-side needed re-flowed. In a nice solder joint you should see a concave surface extending all the way across the pad and a ways up the pin/part. In your nicely focused pics I can see pad with no solder around many pins, particularly on the teensy side. This likely means that the pad did't get hot enough and that the solder, while very nearby, isn't making a connection. re-heating until you see the solder flow across the pad will correct the "cold" joint and fix your board! All the cold joints should be re-flowed to ward off intermitent problems.

(edit: s/an connection/a connection/)

yea i fixed up a bunch of the joints on the top side of the teensy to make them look a lot nicer. also i didnt know which pin was for the malfunctioning column so i did all that looked lackluster.

i am good to go now though!
