Return of the PENUMBRA SA set. PBT's???
« on: Tue, 06 January 2015, 12:56:02 »
(can be drooled upon here)--> http://keypuller.com/penumbra-sa/

I have drooled over this set for quite some time. It was very unfortunate though that a came into the mechanical keyboard scene only months after these where all sold out. I have sense seen a few of these pop up here and there but I was always reluctant to make the purchase. I really would like to have these in PBT Dye sub. I understand the troubles that Signature Plastics faces when tackling a job such as Double shot PBT's. So I am willing to make a sacrifice to have these in PBT. I may just sound crazy to you guys for thinking PBT's are possible in the SA profile as I have yet to find any evidence of such a Unicorn existing. Even a blank set of PBT SA keycaps have eluded me. Maybe there is a reason that they haven't made them that is not immediately apparent to me but I'm sure you guys can help me out with that.

oh yeah and if you have this set post pictures!! Potatoes or not I want to see!

Quick question: can SP use PBT in SA moulds?
Or is this something exclusive to DSA?

As far as I know it would be possible so long as double shot was out of the picture. Will SP ever do it? I have no clue but would love to get my fingers on some.

If PBT SA is possible, I might try a crack at starting a group buy.

I know they can for some keys but not sure if they can for enough to have a complete set.

But you won't get doubleshot.

Any reason why you want PBT?

If it is to stop them going shiny, most A sets are shiny to begin with - that is part of their charm.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I'd love to be able to buy a penumbra SA set. If a group buy happens, if someone wouldn't mind sending me mail to chintimin@gmail.com so I make sure to get in on it, I'd be SERIOUSLY grateful.

Penumbra are semi-matte, but they shine up really quickly. I agree, it's part of the appeal of the profile to me somehow. It really fits the feeling of the caps. I don't think I'd want SA in PBT myself, either. I'd like to try some in POM, though ;) There are gloss, semi-matte and even matte SA sets out there. IIRC, the Commando set is matte.

wow this picture has made me fall in love that much more. I have never really seen how much they actually shine.
This type of shine though looks totally intentional. Thanks for the pic buddy!!

It's a pleasure. These are my <favourite> keycaps! I have Nostalgia, Cherry Legend Replicas, GMK Dolch, Nuclear Green, etc, but these are the ones that live on my keyboard. They just feel sooo good and look awesome, too.

There will probably be a few extra sets that Bunnylake will sell after shipping the outstanding orders out, but I'm not sure if he'll sell them through the thread or on the Ctrl|Alt store.

Not OP but the matt look of PBT is only one aspect of their appeal. The texture is undoubtedly nicer than ABS, even high quality ABS, and the sound is in my opinion much nicer. I haven't extensively listened to the sound of thick, good quality ABS but PBT has always seemed to have a nicer 'thock' quality

Would love to see the Penumbra set issued again. It would be great if it could be done in PBT, but if this presents too many technical difficulties, I would certainly settle for ABS.

It will be coming soon in fully sculptured SA ABS doubleshots. See towards the end of the first round GB thread, from about here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51026.msg1689499#msg1689499

SP have made some PBT SA profile caps, but only 1x and 1.5x and they're not going to be making more. They don't have the holders for dyesubbing them, either.
