[IC] GMK βeta - Launching August 28
« on: Mon, 20 July 2020, 11:36:12 »

Here is the IC for my latest set, GMK βeta.

In collaboration with Krelbit of Switchmod.net and Oblotzky, we have been able to translate one of my favorite Betamax cassette tape sleeves into a keyset, using stock GMK colors.

The Colors

The colors used will be L9, 2B, RO2, and V2. The legends will be CR, which is black.

The Kits

Our kit's aren't 100% finalized. We will have either 1 base and 1 alpha/accent add-on kit, or 2 base kits. Please fill out the form below to express your interest in either.

DO YOU LIKE JUSTSYSTEMS HIPRO? SO DO WE!

PLUS KRELBIT IS A HUGE WEEB AND WILL ONLY SELL SETS WITH SOME SORT OF JAPANESE-BASED INSPIRATION.

SO HERE'S THAT. LOOKS PRETTY SICK.

Regarding split/extra spacebars, OG Spacekeys will be running in a few weeks on my site, so you can get L9 spacebars from that.

The Dates

The group buy will run from August 21, 2020 to September 14, 2020.

The Vendors

US - Switchmod.net
EU - Oblotzky Industries
Canada - Deskhero.ca
SEA - iLumKB
Oceania - Daily Clack
China/International - zFrontier

Last but not least, I leave you with some board renders, on the Kei and No. 2.

For updates and discussion, please check the keyset section on the Switchmod.net Discord Server: discord.switchmod.net

Please fill out the interest check form!

Outstanding. Love the beta key and the additional accents, which feel like they maintain a sort of diagonal symmetry around the alphas.

I’m in for a regular base kit.

Also, I think it would be cool to add white or light grey accent keys. It would resemble the white circle things used to rewind/fast forward the cassettes and it would add some nice contrast to the grey and beige

This looks vvv nice! The only thing is that red color is too neon imo, maybe worth making it less vibrant?

Base kit compat is great. Mod-colored tilde and pipe would be nice to have, but I guess you omitted them on purpose, which is fine.

Show Image

The proposed JS base, if that is preferred to the smaller JS add-on:

Show Image

The JS add-on and JS base kits are missing the R1 `~ー, R3 #~む and R4 \|ろ keys needed for JIS and ISO. The JIS-only 半角/全角 key is present, so it would make sense to include these as well.
The R1 -_ほー key is missing the ー quaternary (top-right) sublegend used on ANSI JP layouts, which these kits are based on.
The R1 0(わを key has a small を quaternary sublegend when, in fact, it should be regular size (like the わ below it) since a small を character doesn't exist in hiragana. (This has been a common mistake in hiragana kits ever since GMK Serika.)

In summary, these are the suggested changes for the JS kits:
  • Add R1 `~ー
  • Add R3 #~む
  • Change R4 \|む to \|ろ
  • Change R1 -_ほ to -_ほー
  • Change R1 0(わを to have a large を sublegend
All molds exist / will exist by the time this gets quoted. References:
Kana sublegends reference
Standard ANSI JP layout
GMK Bentō R2 base kit
GMK Mecha-01 base kit

Hope this helps.

Edit: added missing links
Edit2: updated Mecha-01 link

The cassette sleeve is pretty vibrant itself. We actually had a sort of tough time even finding a perfect-match RAL tone. I believe for our purposes, and considering the goal of using stock GMK colors, RO2 will work just fine.

Super in for the regular alphas with red accents, GB soon pls 😤

Also would love a R4 1.25u Caps Lock if possible (for those that like to swap caps and control)

Both sets are good looking, I like the JS Hi-pro colorway a lot.

I’ll publicly request a couple windowed keys for caps and some 1u.

So much love for the UK ISO included in the base kit.  For that reason alone I will be buying.  An alternative MOD set might be a nice addition.

So it's just a very classic colorway with orange accents?

The JS one looks nice and clean if you're into that. I like the choices made in the base kits.

Am I missing something? Is the hype just because it's hiney?

In summary, these are the suggested changes for the JS kits:
  • Add R1 `~ー
  • Add R3 #~む
  • Change R4 \|む to \|ろ
  • Change R1 -_ほ to -_ほー
  • Change R1 0(わを to have a large を sublegend

I agree with these recommendations.  The last two are required to make even the ANSI layout correct, which should probably be a minimum bar, and as for the first three -- while they wouldn't go so far as to offer full support for JIS keyboards (which I would love, but unfortunately would require a much more extensive kit) -- they would at least allow for correct placement of alphanumeric and kana characters on JIS keyboards, meaning that only the punctuation is off. I believe the same is true of ISO boards, although I will defer to konstantin there as he has done more research on the state of kana input on non-JIS boards than I have.

I agree with you completely.  I'm tired of JP sets not properly supporting JIS like it should be.

In therms of the set... Great colorway, probably going to be a buy. :)  Can we also have some smaller spacebars?  I think JIS should come with smaller spacebar for all the mods the layout has.  That'd be a nice addition.

I'm still a bit weary of the ETD of the set and the terrible QC though...  but this looks great.  Hopefully it'll look great out of production too!

yes, there should not be a color matching phase as the colors are all stock GMK colors. I do not think it will "jump" anything in the queue as those orders were placed before this one will be.

GMK won't actually put you into the production queue until all the vendors have submitted their purchase orders - after the gb period

Waiting to get the preliminary quotes from GMK to make any decisions there.

I suspect this has already been caught, but the scooped F and J keys in the JS base kit don't have sublegends.

No that's totally understandable, JIS is a fairly obscure use case. Just thought it'd be nice to pair it with the width conversion key for completion's sake. There's still physical compat for it, so it's all good :thumb:

With the GB start date shifted to next week, will the GB run past September 14th? Running a few days longer might be helpful for those who are paid bi-monthly.

Hello guy, I would like to ask what is original function of 1U "red keycap with 2 lines of JP letters" next to grey Esc in JS Base set? Is it a "JP Esc" key or something completely different? Google Translator translated as: "Half size/Full width". Thanks for explanation.

It is not an Esc key. JIS keyboards use this key for toggling between half-width and full-width characters, as well as toggling IME input on and off (the function labeled Kanji). You can find more information about this particular key here.

That being said, nothing's stopping you from using this key as an Esc novelty if you want to :)
