Is it time to hand New Orleans back to Nature?
« on: Mon, 30 August 2021, 17:17:14 »
Over half of the city is below sea level. Sea level will only continue to rise and storms will continue to become more severe.

A government cannot mandate the abandonment of a city, but if insurance companies stop insuring all the pieces that comprise it, then it will shrink rapidly as people move to more dependable locales.

Can anybody see any other plausible future for this area?

It's doable,  but with all the sticky fingers, you don't get as much concrete on the ground.

Isn't it too polluted to hand back without cleaning it up first?

What about the hundreds of thousands of people who currently reside there?

And in a couple of decades when some or many coastal cities are uninhabitable?

No, it really isn't.

It's not just the city and lowlands you have to protect, it has to back up through all of the rivers and tributaries, deal with a high water table, hurricanes, and just like Florida deal with the fact that it's SINKING. Anything you build to stop the ocean adds weight causing it to sink faster.

Something we've seen all over the country is that if you stop it flooding in one place it causes it to back up and flood someone else further stream. Everyone things just make the walls higher but that creates a choke point and it backs up and now areas that didn't flood before will now flood. So what do you do then, build up that area, okay, now the next area floods... repeat time and time again. Yes, at some point you may stop the flooding but whenever you stop water from flooding out of a river you also stop water from flowing into a river. Old flood planes become swaps as the water that flowed that direction now has no river to flow into. Enjoy your mosquito infested farmland. This happens all over the midwest.

Worse still...
Those hurricanes are hitting harder and harder because New Orleans is losing wetlands that cushions against those massive tides. We keep cut channels into them for shipping and building dikes to direct create deeper channels, these channels are directing the sediment into a very narrow area and all the lowlands that get washed away by normal tides are not being replenished by flooding sediment, they also serve to funnel the tides right up into the harbors and rivers and with no wetlands to impede it it flows in further and further.

Don't kill the insurance, don't force anyone to move.
When it gets destroyed, pay off the insurance, plow it under and don't allow them to rebuild there. Eventually it will be reduced to only a few small buildings and either it will die on its own or get destroyed as well.
