Post by: senter on Mon, 18 September 2017, 10:10:00
Hi all, Senter here. After our 1st project Orange TKL  (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=90353.0)ended, now I'm presenting to you our 2nd design which is also a TKL but with a different concept.

Here are the renders for the current design:

We call it Time TKL.

The basic idea is that we want to design a case with complex structures.

All the parts will be made by high quality CNC aluminum.

Any way to do a version without the clock? maybe a Simple Time TKL - I loved the speed and results of your last GB and definitely want to get in on what you have next - the clock just seems a little to ornate for me.

This one has a higher risk of breaking...because I would constantly be picking it up to stare at the back. Wow, that looks nice!

Wow, you bring your 2nd project this quick!
Even now I am using Orange 80% to type this reply :)
If I join this I might not be able to type with this keyboard to look the back side.
So gorgeous.
If there are several choices for colors as many as 1st project, please count me in.
Hope the success of you 2nd project! :thumb:

P.S. This design looks not to be flat unlike Orange, doesn't it?

Without the clock we won't call it Time then. A board without weight is in our future plan.

What is the inclination?

Also, is confirmed to be a TKL already or you can still consider other layouts? (75% for example)

I really like this concept but I worry about that intricate ornamentation being too fragile and making production difficult in general. Perhaps a sundial instead of moving clock arms? Less moving/delicate parts could reduce potential problems down the road.

These gears and clock pointers are not movable on the current design. This will be a solid board.

TKL was our original plan. The design is almost finished.

I also found multiple people asked about the 75% version. Now I need to discuss with my partners about our plan.

It might be easy to assume that, based on the amount of people asking for the 75% version,  the majority would prefer that. Just wanted to add a voice saying that I love it as is, and the people who do are likely busy gushing over the build instead of asking for it to remain the same!

YES Please make it 75%, the endgame of the endgames!   I actually really like the design but i doubt I will join if it will be TKL again.

Or why not, make everyone happy and make 2 versions in this GB, TKL and 75%.  At the end only the case will be bigger/smaller, while the Time weights that should be the most important and difficult part will be the same for the 2 versions :D

Idk i would probably be in for anything that is a 75% or a 96-layout

Reddit is pretty much the only community that doesn't use TKL.

China/VN especially use almost nothing but WKL TKL.

It's not a clock. It's just decoration. The gears and the pointer are fixed

:(

I guess I'll try to modify it myself

This is case only? I am still totally in just want to figure out what else I would need. I look at that and am shocked! Showed a friend think there in shock also! I want it so badly.

Not just case, it's a keyboard kit. You still need to buy switches, keycaps, cable, stabs.

Another option is to use our assemble service. Then you only need to install your keycaps on it and the board is ready to use.

doubtful

i'm hoping for tx87, not phantom

We're considering to support some popular TKL bare-bones, but we don't have their measurements currently.

Message kin25 on telegram, he'll help you with those measurements.

I adore this; gotta have one.

One comment I'm seeing regularly (as I'm sure you're aware) is that the design is on the bottom, so you won't see it unless you're picking it up constantly. Got me thinking...

Is a matching case or cover possible? I'm in either way but man, that would really make this thing even more special than it already is. If not now, maybe a future group buy? Just a thought.

Personally i wouldn't mind the same suitcase style case as before my self! That helps keep cost reasonable. That could become a trademark for you all!

Another idea is perhaps something of this design Victorian/Steam Punk! https://i.pinimg.com/736x/10/90/e3/1090e3bc6c6a0e423693af4147783515--dslr-camera-bag-camera-case.jpg The board has a very classy flair and makes me think vintage Victorian area steam punk...

Actually the suitcase used for Orange TKL was not the the one we chose at the very beginning. We changed the original option because many people didn't like it.

I honestly thought I would stop buying keyboards, especially that of the MX variety, but I have to get this last one I think.
Though it all depends on the cost. I don't know what we're looking at due to the sorts of parts and cuts there have to be, but fingers crossed for something I can afford.
Then again, if I can't afford it and therefore don't drop my wallet on it, that has its own upsides.

I’m with Oblotzky, the design is too ornate for me but it sure is nice to see you try something different and new! Good luck with the GB!

I hope that the next project will be more of the futuristic. In appearance and maybe also from the layout and the features...wireless, attachable extras (eg. mechanical slider), a window to see the PCB and its LEDs or something else entirely

I know asking for a definitive time frame is totally out of the question.. but whats the time frame your looking at currently to start the group buy.. end the group buy and possibly have products shipping? I ask cause we are getting closer and closer to December and typically December/January is horrible for shipping cause of the Christmas Season here in the United States! I buying in either way if I can afford it and I will do everything I can to make sure I can afford this! I am just trying to get my expectations inline with what to expect cause never done a keyboard buy outside massdrop! I am going to assume this is going to be way different. Which totally down for.

GB will start in next month. You can check our lead time in our previous group buy for reference. We'll mainly use DHL express to ship the packages which is reliable and fast.

We checked the measurements. Unfortunately we found it's not that easy to make it compatible because of the position of mini-usb female connectors.

I'd say the price will be around $350 by rough estimation but I'm not sure for now.

People ask about ALPS compatible all the time since we started the IC for Orange TKL. This TIME our answer is Yes. The PCB will be compatible with ALPS. We will also provide ALPS version of plates.

The gears won't be covered since they won't be fragile at all.

The distance is about 2.4cm in our current design.

2. Unfortunately no, but we can provide the design file of the plate.

Will there be color samples for the case, plate, gears?

Also do you think if we have it pre built that Kailh box switches could be a optional switch choice? I know Gateron/Cherry's where offered with the first buy.

I know had some other questions sorry I been asking so many!

Very interesting design. I have a couple of questions.

1. Will it support EU ISO layout?
2. Will a non metal plate be offered? PC, CF...

Thanks!

Another question, will there be the possibility of an option for silver / chrome clock instead of the gold for the black case? I feel it would be slick and subtle, not too showy

I'm not sure if silver will look great or not. Now we're considering to provide only several best colors for the bottom parts. Color samples will be provided when GB starts.

For a 80% keyboard, I don't see why it's necessary.

We already have some thoughts about the color options based on the statistics of our previous GB. If you have some preferences, just leave a comment here. This is an IC post so we're still collecting opinions here for now.

This is such a great keyboard.

1. You had an incredible fast turn-around time on your last project. Especially considered how many permutations you offered. Is this something you expect on this as well?

2. Is the clock made of aluminum?

3. How heavy is the keyboard?

Really impressed how you manage to offer such a nice keyboard for an excellent price.
I'm really looking forward to this GB.  :thumb:

I'm touched. I don't think I'll have cash to get into this one, but maybe in the future.

Keep up the good work.

Fantastic news! I understand if this can't be disclosed yet and/or if you prefer to hold off on it until the GB post next week but do you have a more accurate estimate as far as pricing goes now that you had the prototype produced?

Yes, now based on my estimation, the price will be around $400 (or $450 shipped) which is higher than what I hoped. The main reason is the clock shaped weight inserts are very difficult to make and have a a lot higher cost than normal shaped weights.

Yea, that is a little steeper than I'd hoped personally based on your earlier estimations but it is also understandable due to the intricacy of the clock design etc. No doubt in my mind that it is worth it, just a little harder of price tag to swallow as a European customer (imports, VAT, etc.)

yea feeling the same way I really like this and am going to have to give it some serious thought. I am not in Europe but US so import isn't such a big deal. The biggest hang up is 450 shipped ((going with the highest end price)) then tacking on another 50-80 dollars to have it built. I am looking at over 500... which would be pretty expensive for a single keyboard even one as amazing as this! Though wait hopefully perhaps some how the price will come in a bit cheaper.

I was really hoping for a lower price (although I do understand why it costs so much, don't get me wrong). But living in Europe sucks for that :( basing my calculation on the higher available estimated price, it would be $450 + shipping ($40?) + import fees (around $110 for belgium) + Paying someone to build it (another $40); That would cost me around $640 :( I'll have to just watch people be happy about theirs :(

You got me wrong. I mentioned it would be around $450 shipped using DHL express. So if you build it by yourself, the total will be within $500 without considering the taxes. I didn't know the taxes are so high in EU. That's really terrible to hear.

Depending on declaration value, the customs fees might be a bit lower. I recall that my Fox Orange purchase wasn't taxed very heavily.

The general rule for EU taxes (VAT [value added tax]), is that it's 20%. So a $400 item becomes has $80 VAT.

Yes, I won't make it that clear here, but no worries, taxes won't be a big problem according to our prior experiences. I'll make sure you pay as low as possible in every way.

Just curious but will it be cheaper to get a aluminum weight vs the brass weight? Perhaps that could be a point of saving for some of us on the fence.

It should be the machine time rather then the material cost that adds up the price of the weight, thus a alu weight instead wouldn't be much cheaper.

i suspect the given price is the price with alu weight

Dang ok! I might still end up getting it regardless. I really really want this board I even given up buying several other things I want in plans for it.. I just yea it be expensive but!! most likely couldn't buy much else for a while but it might totally be worth it. I guess I could save some money by doing the soldering my self but I worry. My KBD75 went together smoothly but that was like 220 dollars vs the 500 this things could cost... choices choices! Though I do know this is end game type board. I guess gotta wait and check out prices.. I was really hoping for closer to 400 dollars total.

Hi guys, I mentioned last Sunday that GB will start this week but things changed a little bit and we're not gonna start GB until next week.

You know normally people can start the GB first then figure things out in the process. For example, I can start the GB before the PCBs are fully tested, or even before the final design is determined. However, this is not the way we do it this Time. The early prototype will be sent to a reputable keyboard expert in the US for reviewing this week. Then we'll start the GB more confidently.

Please not that this change won't affect the time you will receive Time. We have a schedule for the manufacturing and everything is going well so far. We will start doing something before the GB closes to make sure a short lead time.

I'm really sorry for the change.

Don't be sorry cause you decided to do extra quality testing. I drop 500 bucks on a keyboard I will expect perfection. Thats what you doing making sure things are perfect.. its better to get these sorta issues out of the way now instead of waiting mid buy then having to delay shipments. The longer this takes to hit the better I think.. more time to save up. Don't be sorry for having to delay hopefully everything goes smoothly. I am glad your having the board tested by someone else also.

Collaboration with zFrontier

As many of you may know, FoxLab will be collaborating with zFrontier (http://en.zfrontier.com) to organize and fulfill the GB for Time TKL. Here are several reasons why we're doing it in this way:

Price

The price will be a fixed $458 with expedited free shipping. You won't be charged for PP fee or any other fees.

The board is much heavier than Orange TKL, so the price is like $400 or so for the board and rest for the international shipping from China to your country. Don't worry too much for the taxes as well.

I was trying to keep the price as low as possible in the whole process and this is the best we can do for this board. If you decide to buy it, I'm sure it will worth every penny you spend.

No need to apologies. I didn't make it clear. The following parts will be included.

There will be also some accessories like neoprene damping pad, rubber feet, screwdriver, and so on.

As many of you may know, FoxLab will be collaborating with zFrontier (http://en.zfrontier.com) to organize and fulfill the GB for Time TKL. Here are several reasons why we're doing it in this way:

  • zFrontier is professional on organizing the order information and sorting the boards. We made mistakes before on the such things but now problems will be less possible to happen with zFrontier's help.
  • Fast shipping. If you have ever bought keyboards or keycps from zFrontier, you may know the international shipping is very fast from zFrontier. They're VIP customer of DHL and many other shipping companies, so they have the priority to ship goods very fast, faster than we used to be.
  • Better cumtomer service. With the help of zFrontier, we will provide professional after sales service for this GB.

Collaboration with zFrontier

As many of you may know, FoxLab will be collaborating with zFrontier (http://en.zfrontier.com) to organize and fulfill the GB for Time TKL. Here are several reasons why we're doing it in this way:

  • zFrontier is professional on organizing the order information and sorting the boards. We made mistakes before on the such things but now problems will be less possible to happen with zFrontier's help.
  • Fast shipping. If you have ever bought keyboards or keycps from zFrontier, you may know the international shipping is very fast from zFrontier. They're VIP customer of DHL and many other shipping companies, so they have the priority to ship goods very fast, faster than we used to be.
  • Better cumtomer service. With the help of zFrontier, we will provide professional after sales service for this GB.

Price is a little steep

Price is approx 400 + shipping. Also no paypal fees (which usually ends up $20)

So if price was 400+20 (paypal) + shipping (40-60), which prices the board itself at 380-400.

I am with others its a bit to expensive for me. There is nothing wrong with that. The board is amazing and if I had the money I buy it.. but its just like a Ferrari there amazing but sadly out of my price range. Hopefully the next group buy will come in at a more easily manged price and look just as good. I will admit this would have been one of my end game boards but I was truthfully expecting a price closer to 350 with 400 out the door. The Orange was 290 so was basing my thoughts off that. I know TKL for 450 is a good deal and all that still doesn't stop the fact Ferrari might be a good deal but isn't affordable to the vast majority of people.

I apologise if this has been discussed or is obvious but what is the kit inclusive of? Case, weight, plate and PCB?

No need to apologies. I didn't make it clear. The following parts will be included.

  • Aluminum top and bottom cases
  • Aluminum plate
  • Aluminum weights (11 parts)
  • Aluminum nameplate (The ‘TIME’ logo above the arrow keys)
  • PCB: compatible with both MX switches and ALPS switches

There will be also some accessories like neoprene damping pad, rubber feet, screwdriver, and so on.

Will brass still be an option for weight and plate?

Any idea if there will be any assembly option?

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

Since zfrontier will be our proxy to sell the kits, there'll be no assembly services.

If you're in CONUS and really can't handle the soldering by yourself, I might be able to do it for you. You'll need to pay a CONUS shipping though.

It's not a limited buy.

Limited buy makes the board increases value after the GB.

We're not doing it in this way because we have the ability to make as many boards as you can buy.

We haven't thought about R2 currently because we always want to try new thing rather than old.

Super keen to find out what the colours are.

If a dark purple or rose gold is an option I will die happy.

I’m a huge mechanical watch nut but unfortunately this is dropping at the wrong time. No pun intended. There are a few other boards and keys sets I am interested in at the moment so hopefully this can be run again at some point so I can add it to the collection!

I think the price is fantastic for what your getting.

Good luck with the group buy!

Would switch plate support Alps switch also?

Can you explain?  You mean that they included the custom fees payment with the shipping of DHL (yeah DHL does that if you pay more)
Otherwise i don't understand why we shouldn't worry, with a fast math should be around $150 custom fees, more or less same for other EU people.

When will GB run?

https://en.zfrontier.com/collections/keyboards/products/foxlab-time

At the bottom, looks like it'll run from Nov. 2nd to Nov. 23rd. Although they have a typo and say 2th and 23th on zfrontier lol.

Quick question - will you have any colour samples before/during the GB? A few colours are hard to picture in my head personally, namely the Crystal Blue (which looks like a cyan colour, awesome!) and Emeral green for the case as well as the rose pink for the weight, do you have access to any colour chips for example?

Thanks!

The color options listed on zfrontier are actually photos of real color samples. We sent them those anodized pipes and they photographed them in that way.

Oh I see! Yea, the glare and the small picture size makes it a little hard for me to really see but maybe that's just me. The Emerald green looks like it could be very cool!

Before Christmas is still our estimation.

Since we're working with zFrontier now, we want to do it 'under promise, over deliver', so the lead time show on zFrontier is 2 weeks.

1. GB post has been submitted. GB will start on November 2nd (eastern daylight time), 8 PM, right before TopClack starts.

2. We just started a limited FCFS Chinese GB for Time TKL. All the 66 kits were sold out (https://www.zfrontier.com/post/detail/3058) in minutes.
