Hydro Dipping?
« on: Fri, 10 October 2014, 16:11:57 »
I was wondering if anyone has tried hydro dipping their cases. In the car community its a nice mod a lot of people do. Its relatively cheap and I know a guy locally that'll cut me a deal. They also do a bunch of game controllers. here are a few examples. Also wondering if I get this done if anyone else would want to send me theirs or send it to my local shop and maybe get a discounted price or something.

I'd want to do a woodgrain keyboard with brass caps.

That's the first thing I thought of--it's pretty common in the competitive shooting community around here. There's a guy near me that does it also.

Personally, I think it looks tacky more often than not and I'd prefer a solid color on my keyboards.

I never knew people did it to guns. thats pretty interesting. I wouldn't want anything like the examples I posted in OP or like the links posted above. It'd more so be as this

I'm guessing that game controller in the OP is made of plastic?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Seems a good fit for board cases. Thought the first photo in the OP was something like paper marbling (which would be awesome). Attractive abstract designs appear to suit it, but I could imagine plenty of uses.

Anyone have an idea how the images are printed onto the water?  Or is it an image printed onto a film that is put onto the water?

I saw a youtube video about it somewhere where it looked like they just sprayed a paint ontop of a water tank and then dipped the piece into it and swirled.

Found it

Looks like the film or print is laid into the water then sprayed with what I can only assume is a chemical to make it adhere?

Yeah.  I think you spray something on the piece as prep then spray something on the film then dip.

How would you get even prints like the dollar bills or skulls?

practice practice practice. It looks like he was kind of guiding the pattern with the angle he was dipping at.

Those dollar bills don't look a milimeter off though, that's insane.
If you can be so accurate, I definitely want to dip a case with my own image.

I've seen some pictures of a case done with red skulls as a design, looked very sharp.  There are kits sold for guns, bows, etc., mostly in woodland camo and the like, but some metal-look patterns too.

I might be convinced to dip one of my hhkb cases if I can think of something that would look good with one of my cherry sets.
