DPI/CPI for trackballs
« on: Wed, 21 April 2010, 11:02:47 »
I was trying to find out the DPI or CPI for some of the newer trackballs out there.  However, I cannot seem to find that information readily available.  I know that certain ones like the CTS L-Trac allow DPI customability, but I was more curious about the ones from Logitech and Kensington, these in particular:

Logitech Trackman Marble (formerly Marble Mouse)
Logitech Trackman Wheel (wired or wireless)
Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman
Kensington Expert Mouse (7.0 gray/black)
Kensington Slimblade Trackball
Kensington Orbit Trackball with Scroll Ring

If anyone knows a good source for this info, please share  .  Thanks.

Try calling TrackballWorld (I kid you not, they do exist).

I'll shoot them an email this weekend.  It was more for curiosity than anything else that I was wondering.

I'd say that they're about 800DPI or so. I know the CST is 400/800/1600 switchable.

You can calculate it for yourself with a few simple spin tests  involving this magic number...

I actually attempted to do that with the Expert Mouse before I wrote this post.  I used a FPS and circle/sphere calculator along with some craptacular reverse engineering.  I came up with ~800 DPI for the Expert Mouse under Mouseworks.  I have yet to try this using the Trackballworks beta, but the DPI does feel different.  I am not sure if this is intentional or not so I am loathe to do it again.  To be honest, I was hoping for an official source to confirm/refute my findings - hence the thread.

That is a great image by the way. I believe I only used two decimals in my measurements.

Hey, I make no bones about it.  I'm proud of it, in fact.  I even put it as my title.  That said, all I know of pi is 3.14.  I have a pretty funny (Texas A&M) Aggie joke about pi, but it's pretty wordy, and I don't feel like typing it out right now.

Of course neither can get a job these days so everybody stay in school.

This is the disappointing part.  Around my company, the less educated you are, the higher you go.  I have a BA (history), and I am over a couple of people with their Masters.  My boss has a BA from some podunk university. The other two directors on his level do not have degrees.  Their boss does not have a college degree, either.  Our owner is very well educated, however.

Hello.

I'm interested on this topic,but...

Could you all please stop becoming so many offtopic? That stereotypical nerdy stuff is BORING!

I would like to know the DPI of Kensington SlimBlade Trackball, to see the (technical) advantages over the easily hackable
LaserTRAC (L-TRAC) 2545 Trackball that operates up to 1600dpi.
