Odyssey is a 80% custom keyboard we designed from 2016. It's featured with the fancy aviation connector/cable.
The cases are manufactured by my friend EVE, the manufacturer of Moon and Mira SE.
We've already successfully fulfilled our R1 GB in China last year.
This is a Group Buy for an modified version of Evil80. We changed the aviation port (https://i.imgur.com/0GmL6pY.jpg) a little bit and changed the PCB to QMK programmable PCB.

If it is possible to get that R1 silver white pink combo with the pulse heart nameplate, I would be in to match my SA Valentine :)

Is there any chance you could offer a polycarbonate plate? Or share the cad files so we can get one done? Really interested in this board...

So, will the name plate actually be our custom text raised (and not engraved) as seen in the images above??  That would be amazing, but I doubt that is economically feasible for free.

Can you clarify if custom name plate would be embossed as seen in the photos or will it be engraved/etched?

Thanks for bring this up. I do need to clarify that all the nameplates will have embossed texts as showed in the photo. Here're more examples:

The nameplates will be cut by the machine and then anodized. For aluminum versions, the embossed texts will be polished. Brass versions won't be polished.

The legends can't be too complex that the machine can't handle. Please refer to the samples and get an idea what legends can be made.

Great now I need the brass version...any idea on weight difference between aluminum and brass? Any shipping estimates to the states or EU?

I don't know the weight of brass version. Aluminum case + plate + nameplate + bottom part = 4lbs.

Shipping estimates are listed in the screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/KGHS3

You guys know QMK is about to launch their GUI right?

I'm actually tempted to buy this now that they swapped the PCB.

Nope, if it's half decent it might be worth it I guess. Not a fan of qmk to be honest.

Why? Like what specifically do you dislike about QMK? Cause I'm not aware of ANY features that other firmware have that QMK doesn't other than GUI. Plus it's actually faster/lower latency than almost everything else.

The only complaints I've ever seen were from people who couldn't or didn't want to figure it out because they didn't wanna build the firmware themselves.

Probably has something to do with installing a build environment, cloning repositories, compiling and building software and a whole dedicated process and learning curve just to change a couple keys around. Seems a bit like overkill just for a simple task where I can push a gui button.

I get it, I'm a programmer. It sounds like fun and learning something new is always cool and fun to play with, but this just sounds daunting to me after 10 or so hours of doing it all day long..

If you are really a programmer I don't know how you can find the process to be daunting, it's almost entire automated with scripts. Either way though, this is what's coming: http://config.qmk.fm (still super early and not yet stable)

And while it may SEEM daunting, but I (as a c# dev, with basically 0 c experience) was able to add support for a new PCB, and then, like you once I had everything ready and it was time to flash, I was super nervous about what would be involved, but at least with windows it's literally EXTREMELY easy, much easier than I expected:

1. Clone Repository (install git if you somehow don't have it, then just run git clone https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware.git in whatever folder you wanna put it in, I used c:/users/<username>/desktop/kb)
2. Install MSYS2 (http://www.msys2.org/, there is nothing to configure, you just run the installer and you are done, should most likely use the x64 version)
3. Open MSYS2 MingGW 64-bit (you just open the shortcut)
4. Navigate to the folder where you cloned the repo (for me it was "cd /c/users/<username>/desktop/kb/qmk_firmware")
5. run util/msys2_install.sh (one time, for setup, basically just yes through all the options, you probably don't need all the drivers but it's so much easier to just have them all and not worry about it)
6. to build a firmware all you have to do is run: "make <keyboardname>:<keymapname>" or to build and flash you just do "make <keyboardname>:<keymapname>:dfu"

The keyboard names are just the folders in the keyboards folder: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards
The keymap names are the folders in the keymaps folder under a specific keyboard: https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/gh60/keymaps

So to build and flash the default GH60 profile you just run:

"make gh60:default:dfu"

Assuming your board is already supported, it only takes a few minutes to do the entire thing. Then you just have to setup your own keymap.

Either way though, once the site is done, you will be able to use it to build your firmware with it without installing MSYS2 or running the script, and then it's just a matter of flashing them which you can do yourself or using qmk toolbox i believe.

Anyway, I'll stop cheer-leading now. If you ever do decide to try QMK and want any assistance in getting anything working, let me know and I would be happy to help. I promise it's much easier than it seems at first, especially if you already have a background in code.

That option in the form was not accurate. We'll provide templates in both ai and dxf formats. You can fill in the template with anything you like, including the heart beat figure. I'll ask and guide everyone to make the nameplate design when GB closes.

How would one go about if they want a custom design on the nameplate? Can we work from a template you provide or do we just tell you what we would like and you chalk up a design?

I dont mind designing something myself, just wondering how it went last gb and what would be the most convenient way to handle this.

Seems like there will be both an AI and DXI file provided as a template. I'm not sure what a DXI is, but I'm assuming AI is an illustrator (vector) file, which works for me although SVG would be nice too. Is that correct zl_ramiel? Any chance of getting these early so we can have our files ready for when this opens?

GB will be opened on GeekHack after 6 hours.

According to the IC form. 76 people are interested in joining, and 16 are not sure. Since not all the 76 person are able to join at this time period, we set the limited available number in this GB as 60. Not sure if that number is accurate or not tho.

I'm in the middle of the ordering process. If I made a custom nameplate, where would I attach the file? Would I just send it to you separately?

Order placed thank you

My main concern is making the back plate.  What program do I use to make the file necessary for perfect cutting

Check the template file. It's pretty simple.

You can also tell me the texts and font you want to cut. Then we can make the file for you.

I ordered an extra nameplate and wondered if its possible to have it engraved with a different design? As in each plate having its own design? Also with the extra weight will it also have the logo on it? Thanks!

Sure you can have different designs on multiple nameplates.
Every weight part has the evil triangle logo.

new prototype has been finished. The major difference from the 2017 China R1 version is the female connector. Other cases are in production as well.

We also made some poly-carbonate plates for those who're interested. Free of charge but FCFS.

Please send me the file for your nameplate if you haven't. We can only send you the default version if you send the file to me too late.

The deadline for applying PC plates and sending files is 26th this month.

I don’t understand this business model, for a big factory like EVE does he not have enough money to hire a project manager? It’s a per project quote, it’s not like 3-4 months is the standard quote for everything. GB runners ask for timeline quote per groupbuy. Should EVE estimate the quote accordingly every time with consideration to his on-going projects?

Moon, Mira, Evil-80, all delays because “too many projects” at the moment. The way this hobby treats that as an acceptable excuse is beyond my comprehension. It’s rude to the on-going customers and future customers

Moon, Mira, Evil-80, all delays because “too many projects” at the moment. The way this hobby treats that as an acceptable excuse is beyond my comprehension. It’s rude to the on-going customers and future customers

While I did not participate in the Evil 80 GB, I did participate in the Equal Mountain GB, it appears EVE prides himself/themselves on the work done, I don't think I have seen any poorly manufactured boards posted that have come from EVE. For me it's worth the wait, even if the timeline is skewed due to too many projects or similar, if the work is exceptional can you really complain?

I don’t understand this business model, for a big factory like EVE does he not have enough money to hire a project manager? It’s a per project quote, it’s not like 3-4 months is the standard quote for everything. GB runners ask for timeline quote per groupbuy. Should EVE estimate the quote accordingly every time with consideration to his on-going projects?

This does not have anything to do with the quality of work. I partook in a lot of delayed GBs due to faulty parts (LZ-CLS, E1-V8,...). I am okay with delayed to fix corrections, but there is no correction to fix here, it is just EVE greedily takes on too much what he could not handle. He himself estimated the amount of time without factoring in his maximum capacity. It's like going to a restaurant that can handle 100 customers, but the owner is greedy. So at high traffic hours, the owner put out more tables and scrams more customers. Eventually he'll overwhelming the staffs and the service and food quality would go down. Know your capability

If EVE keeps doing this there will be a breaking point down the road. And when something breaks, not only you, as a customer, will have to wait for over-capacity, now there is more delay for fixes.

Sorry to bust your bubbles but this happened many times before in this hobbies. SA Godspeed, massive amount of China proxy orders are non-fulfilled, plus massive delays. Phantom GB 4 years ago on here, whitefiredragon deleted his account and ran away, overwhelmed with too many orders. Seth, 1 man gb runner and keyboard service, classified as a scammed for not fulfilling 2 on-going GBs. The last time we heard from Seth he auctioned off a Kmac on ebay that was supposedly commissioned to assemble by fellow GH member.

The point is I dont care if EVE estimated 3 months timeline, 6 months or even 1 year. You have to stick to that timeline if there's no ****ups, if there is ****ups, post pictures and I will wait. But you cant give me a timeline, and tell me it's going to be delay because whie manurfacting my order, he takes on more orders. Going back to that restauraunt example, it's rude to tell me I only need wait for 20mins for a table but it turns out to be an hour wait.

EVE just informed me that most of the anodizing has been finished. Several blue cases need to be re-anodized as the colour is not as accurate as we wished. EVE confirmed they can ship all the aluminium and brass parts to us in the next week. Here (https://imgur.com/a/0eMkd6N) are some photos of the finished cases.

We will do the QC again once we receive all the cases, even we have strong confidence that EVE will ship flawless parts to us.

I really appreciate all your patience as the shipping date comes so late. Please PM me if you want to change the shipping address.

According to the pictures on the Evil-80 Taobabo page it looks like they are using a JST-PH connector

So, if i find a PCB that fits the case and plate in terms of dimensions AND has afromentioned connector, i should be able to make it work if i am not mistaken
Please correct me if i'm wrong tho!

I am hoping that the lfk tlk fits dimension-wise

Don’t know about lfk, but b.87 seems to have what you need to use that connector. Don’t know if size would work though.

  • EVE told me all the production has been finished but they then realized that they missed the brass nameplates
  • EVE promised to ship kits to us "in the next week" on June 18. We haven't received any kits from them until now. After several times of communication, they finally agree to ship a part of kits to us by today.
  • As the 180 days PayPal protection is approaching, buyers can request a refund and reinvoice if you're afraid of scams.
Thanks for the update hopefully we can get this kit by the end of July.    ;D
Is there a better way to reach you? I have sent a couple PM's regarding a extra cable if possible but i have not heard anything from you and I fear that if some one does want to reinvoice they may have trouble connecting with you.

We have received all the cases from EVE. It has been delayed for various reasons in manufacturing. I hope I could do more but I didn't have contact with the manufacturer. Now it's finally under our control. The shipping should be started in one week.

When emailing zl_ramiel  i would also get a response from Huan, i just figured it was the same person, not to worried though since the boards are done. Seems like they also ran a GB for china peeps at the same time so that may be the reason its taking awhile. Also its only Huan doing the shipping one person. Hope it gets shipped soon though.

Huan responded to me about 4 days ago. He is still packing the keyboards, he has 60 gb china members and then the ones ran through geekhack i'm assuming. lol, funny story guys. apparently Huan is also the name of the fella over at kbdfans. so rather than an evil 80 i was greeted by some pbt 9009....whoops

So does that mean nobody has actually heard anything about shipping and fulfillment? It's been almost 3 weeks since Ramiel's email went out about the boards being in their hands and being prepped to go out and I have still not gotten a reply to my emails or PMs.

I emailed Huan today to see if we can get some information as to whether the kits will sent out this upcoming week. Have not heard back yet but the last email he sent me said he was still packing and attached another picture. Maybe Ramiel can get in contact with Huan easier than us but he hasn't responded to my message i sent him.

Got a update from Huan he is still packing the boards but the name plates screw holes were milled to 2.5m but the housing is is milled to 2m so Eve is creating the plates once more. The issue was reported to eve awhile ago so they will hopefully be done soon.

No kidding... I cannot believe how long the delays have taken to resolve considering how smoothly it seemed to be running at the beginning and how ambitious the original turn around time was slated to be.

-Boards on hand.
-Cut off communication
-Will not ship

Sounds familiar? This is E8-V1 all over again, if I could hazard a guess, the runner invests his money in something else and doesn't have the fund to send out the boards.

i have had to reach out to Huan with a app called Q i will provide the info Ramiel gave me

"I suggest you to join Evil's QQ group. They speak Chinese but someone can read English. There are also some Chinese buyers waiting for the boards there. The QQ group number is 471986695

If you are too eager to contact Huan and he doesn't response, you can call his cellphone. His number is 13382593386. It's a Chinese phone number of course."

My Evil 80 arrived today! I just finished unboxing and inspecting it. Initial impressions; finish is not 100% perfect, there are some very minor imperfections, but I would say ano is 99% perfect. Machining is very precise, although the seem between the bottom and top housing is more pronounced than some customs I have handled. The tolerances and hardware fit tightly and it feels like a professionally designed kit, some great design work on the nubs for case alignment and the countersunk holes and screws are great. The aviation connector is high quality and looks to be well implemented. I will have better photos and more detailed info when I get a chance to sit down with the board at home.

One major issue, not everything I ordered was included in the package. I am missing one gold case screw, there were only 7 included in the little container. The package also only included one PCB, I ordered an extra PCB so that I could have two sets of internals (I also got a plastic plate) so I have emailed Remiel and am awaiting a response.

Well, I am at least glad that the boards are now reaching people, but it is very concerning that there are parts missing, especially with all of the delay times we have gone through. Hopefully that gets resolved quickly for you, and that this is not common for other entrants .

I mean...if it's missing parts it's missing parts. Are you going to somehow personally package everything? Nothing can be done if it's packaged missing a part aside from informing ZL.

Yup, missed a word but it's English most certainly. Every order should be correct, but it doesn't always happen, just have to hope it's right the first time otherwise you wait for additional parts which is sometimes the case.

Why should I have to hope for the best instead of contacting the guy packaging all the cases and check my order specifically for all the parts? I'm sorry but I don't follow your logic, you can keep that to yourself and let me handle this my way ok?

You're certainly welcome to your own opinion, I'm just trying to follow how you contacting someone who's supposed to package everything correctly, to ask them to package everything correctly for you is going to go anywhere when it's supposed to be packaged correctly from the beginning. But yes, you're welcome to handle it how you please.

So me telling the guy that the first people that received their cases were missing parts, wouldnt make him check even more carefully for the next shipment? If he's being more careful, am I not doing every gb participants a favor at the same time? Add to that, that I specifically asked him to check my package that it contained all the extra items through my own list that he can check off with, he may have the wrong information, thus the reason the first shipment were missing parts in the first place.

Here are a few more photos (https://imgur.com/a/ayk0nkT), I finished my initial build the other night. Custom polycarb plate, stickered and lubed silent blacks with 62G springs, and zeal screw on stabs. I am having a custom cable made by someone else so I have not yet been able to test or program the board.

A few more thoughts on the kit; the aviation connector is really cool, and mounting is well designed however the clearance on the cable and the PCB is a little tight. You have to put quite a bit of pressure on the cable and PCB to make it fit. The plates are pretty meh quality wise... I had already made a custom plate since plastic was not originally an option, but upon unboxing the brass and plastic plate ramiel included I was disappointed. The plastic plate has a ton of burs and the finish on the brass plate leaves a bit to be desired. I intend to do a bit of filing to clean up the brass plate before using it. I do not think I will use the plastic plate at all.

Huan contacted me regarding my missing PCB and hardware, told me he would send them right away. Until I finish the cable I don't really have much else to say. Programming the keyboard should be pretty straightforward however I am not really a fan of having a flash mode button on the PCB since it requires the case to be taken apart to flash a new keymap.

Didn't the guys opt for a QMK PCB? If so you can just bind a reset key which puts the board into dfu mode, the keycode for that is (surprise): RESET. Just put that somewhere you don't accidentally hit (uncommon key on the FN layer for example) and you never have to hit the physical reset button again.

Looks clean as F#$@ can't wait to get mine. Huan received more custom plates and will hopefully get the default plates today and then send out the rest of the boards. Do you know which program is used when programming the PCB?

For all of their issues I'll be happy if Massdrop sets up some stricter policies regarding groupbuy standards. The level of communication and how some details of this buy are being handled is unacceptable. No communication for months and no tracking for a $500+ purchase going through international shipping....

It makes no difference. Why should i use a 4th party app to arrange details laid out on this one? You use the platform you started on no matter what you are doing.. The standards of doing business on gb's like this just make me appreciate legit gb's. I will never join this crap again... Dishonest business at best and manipulation and liars at worst...

I am having issues with terminating an existing usb cable of mine with the included connector. Keyboard usb keyboard device descriptor request failed when I plug it in, and the caps lock LED lights up.

Does the PCB come pre-flashed with firmware? Has anyone had any success flashing custom firmware to their board?

I am having issues with terminating an existing usb cable of mine with the included connector. Keyboard usb keyboard device descriptor request failed when I plug it in, and the caps lock LED lights up.

Does the PCB come pre-flashed with firmware? Has anyone had any success flashing custom firmware to their board?
Mine was flashed already

Anyone know if the PCB comes with resistors/diodes pre-soldered? My board arrived today but don't have it on hand currently to check.

Small update. Huan responded to an email and its a bit chaotic. I asked him whats up with shipping and here's his response:

"I'm very sorry, I didn't send your keyboard because EVE only made one nameplate, he missed the brass, he only made one for all two nameplates, he has contacted him to make a new one, I'm really sorry, now I only have one black one.(The keyboard on the photo is for other people, and yours is silver white.)"

I don't really know what he means. He seems to say the black one got made and the brass one didn't as I ordered two nameplates/weights one in black aluminum and one in brass, but in his attached photo its clearly the brass one he says didn't get made. Also I ordered a silver case which he clarifies isn't mine in the picture (as its not silver), but it has my nameplate on it that he says didn't get made? I emailed for clarification and haven't had a response yet....

Seriously? This GB has been running for 11 months and we are only now finding out about nameplate issues? I'm cursing myself for not taking the scumbag route and doing a chargeback when I still could. What a ****show. I would take a stock or blank name plate, I don't even care about the engraving, lol.

Also, why is the GB runner or Huan never updating this thread? We have to find out everything 2nd hand. If other entrants hadn't taken initiative, we would have absolutely no idea why we didn't have the boards that were supposed to ship in MARCH.

we already knew about the first nameplate issue, cuz eve made them with m2.5 threads. this time, there seems to be some missing nameplates.

I understand that several other group buys have equally bad projected timelines, but a >11 month wait on a 3 month projected timeline is, at best, incredibly annoying

Well, the good news is my board did actually arrive to my apartment.

The bad news is that is has a gigantic gash right above the name plate :(

Totally understandable though, would have been completely out of character for something related to this group buy to actually have gone smoothly.

I am pretty peeved.

I have reached out to Ramiel about this and have not heard anything back. I know he has no obligation to reply since the buy is pretty much completed but I am holding out hope that he will attempt to make things right somehow.
This really just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me very hesitant to enter any additional buys moving forward. Paying this much, waiting this long and receiving a damaged board is totally unacceptable.

Does anyone who has their board know what the right most indicator LED is set to by default or how to change it? It defaults to being on whenever the board is plugged into a PC with power and it's not a num lock indicator or any other kind of toggle-able indicator from what I can tell. The other ones are simply caps and scroll lock and they work just fine.

If you haven't received you board or have any other issues, you need to contact Huan through QQ

So you’re telling me to go buy a car at a local dealership, but when it’s time to go get my car, which I purchase locally, I have to drag my car-less ass to some bum **** middle of somewhere else to get my car?

They came to GH, had an interest check and then a group buy thread. Everything was done through this platform for the buyers’ convenience. But as soon as money exchanged hands, it’s for the convenience of the seller. Great deal. At this point I called it a wash, it is very frustrating and shady.

That's a bad analogy since Huan is not the gb runner and this is no purchase made by a registered businesses.

But yeah, if you can't take 10 minutes to make a QQ account and get in contact with the original creator to get your $500 board sorted, you will just have to take the loss, cuz ramiel is nowhere to be seen.

All I want to know is where’s the guy that controls the money? We paid that guy so clearly he has the power to make any executive decision. I don’t need to be led around in a circle just to chase tails after tails.

Although it was quite late and I had trouble communicating with the runner and Huan, I did get my board and I was even able to get replacement parts (I had ordered an additional PCB which didn't arrive in the original box) so I am very sad to hear that there are still people without their boards.

It looks like they were all manufactured at least so I am unsure what the cause of the fulfillment delays are...
