    BOX 75
    "A box that provokes."

    dks | Lin Design Studio

    PREFACE

The BOX75 began as a project to design a keyboard I would use personally.
The name, "Box", pays homage to a response from Japanese architect Tadao Ando. When asked what architecture is to him, he replied "Chohatsu suru hako," or "the box that provokes"; and the BOX75 seeks to do just that: a black box measuring 20mm thickness lifted by a series of interlocking thin frames.
The frame as a structural expression that is part of the keyboard also supports the keyboard itself. My hope is that one looks at it and wonders how it comes together.

Cool design (saw your photos on Insta).

Just as a suggestion, you may consider changing the name of your studio to something different.

There is already a very well known designer that goes by Linworks. Calling yourself Lindesignworks is going to be confusing.

It's a really nice and simplistic design as I've seen on your insta. I'm really curious to see how it is built. However 50 units will most likely cause the price of the kit to be very expensive and not sure if i'm willing to spend a lot for this design.

So you've copied the central element of the Church of the Light, but turned a beautiful expression of negative space into something resembling a coffee table with applied embellishments. I'm not sure what this is supposed to provoke, but I can tell you I don't think Ando would approve.

    Show Image

Thanks for your comment. The design itself has nothing to do with the Church of light, or Tadao Ando in fact. The mention of Ando only relates to the use of "box". I am glad you are provoked nonetheless.

Will the leg edges be slightly rounded as to not scratch/dig into a desk or deskmat? I like the nice flat even look for the legs but have concerns that if the board was accidentally shifted it would scratch the desk/deskmat.

Really interesting board, interested in joining! There seems to be a layout disperenscy between the renders and the layout photo. The function keys are going to be 1/4/4/4/1 like the renders instead of the 1/4/5/3/1 right? I love how the lines go through the board; the structural expression you mention really sticks out to me.

Good catch. The function keys will be as the prototype photos and renders. Layout is updated as well. Thank you.

    definitely a unique design!
visually pleasing but might suffer from hollow sound with no additional bottom weight and tall legs.
do you have any plans to record a typing test with the prototype(s)?

I do like the design, however I do have concerns with the support system. All it takes is some unevenness on the legs or the surface and you could be typing on a wobbly keyboard. Additionally, I feels like I could scratch the legs if I don't use a deskmat, and if I do use deskmats it might introduce wobble because deskmats are squishy to a certain extent. Honestly I don't know how much these factors will come in play in reality, but I do think those are things to look out for.

Bl4ck is correct, there will be die cut rubber bumpers to pad the legs to give it some grip and reduce vibration. In terms of the support system, the design actually utilizes 6 points of support instead of just the 4 legs (2 rear, 2 on the side, and 2 longer surfaces at the front). There was no wobble prior to installing the rubber pads, and after installing them I am quite confident that it would not be an issue.

The accent pieces, "bars," are mirror polished stainless steel. Black PVD on black ano would be beautiful and is something I had in mind for a while. However, similar to Zava's comment on having a brass option for the accent, I am aiming to keep the options limited to reduce complexity. From a design standpoint as well, the original intent was and still is "stainless steel on black" to reproduce the contrast you see with a white on black setup: the black recedes to the background and emphasizes the accents.

For what it's worth, there's already an established maker using the name Lin. Maybe best to avoid confusion and change early on whilst you can? I don't personally care but just wanted to point out in case you didn't know.

Cool design (saw your photos on Insta).

Just as a suggestion, you may consider changing the name of your studio to something different.

There is already a very well known designer that goes by Linworks. Calling yourself Lindesignworks is going to be confusing.

Thank you both for the reminder, I am aware of that! A name change is possible but unlikely. Lin is, literally, the name I was born with, and its great if it's another designer's name too, I like this name. However, we do have very different approaches to design and I hope the designs are enough to differentiate us.

waiting for the prototype. I am a little bit worried about the structure.

Been following your progress on IG since currently I guess we are interested in everything 75% for obvious reasoins, your design stands out. Cant wait to see the prototypes

The photos in the IC are of the actual R1 prototype—the shots with the wooden floor. What I meant was the album will be updated again once the pcb arrives, apologies if the wording was confusing, I’ve rephrased it.

Interesting design, reminds me of trendy office furniture from the 1980's.  Would ISO be possible?
