[GB] ANSI/ISO HHKB GON NS NerD 60% (Completing R1)
« on: Fri, 16 August 2013, 09:55:16 »
Updated thread: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60159.0

As far as I know everyone got theirs or is going to soon and this group buy is complete. :D
If anyone had any problems let me know.
Round 1 Info:
More
Items for following members are shipped out.

propingmantis - shipped last month

bunnylake - today
longweight - today
BimboBB - today

Others will be shipped as they are ready. ;)

STATUS: May 6, 2014: Production will be complete within the next week or two. Instead of the GH60 PCB, you will have the option to purchase the NERD 60% PCB which I highly recommend over the GH60 for this case so you can properly take advantage of lighting up the polycarb layer. If you have not received an invoice for the nerd pcb, please send me a PM.

I will be offering assembly for CONUS boards, ctrlalt can assemble in the UK. PM me for details.

This is the chosen layout:

Supports 1x backspace

Click for more info:
More

GON is kind enough to offer a run of custom new style ISO housings for the GH60. Please leave a reply or send me a PM if you are interested.

You can find more info about the housings here: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47120.0

This run would be for the housing only. Please refer to GON's original thread for colors, shipping costs, and extra parts like screws or stabilizers.

Minimum Order Quantity & Price
This run will require a MOQ of 5 and will be $155 for each housing.

Layout
I really want the ISO HHKB layout, but of course I'm willing to comprise with everyone so were all happy.
I wouldn't mind a split backspace either. Let me know what you like.

Order List
1. me (codyeatworld) - Paid
2. gropingmantis - Paid
3. BimboBB
4. Glod - Paid
5. elton5354
6. bunnylake - Paid

I'm interested. Though can't afford it! LOL!

Though Universal ISO would be the most accommodating for all. Especially those who want just the ISO enter. God if I have money and a GH60 order I'm all in here :(

I wouldn't mind making the bottom row accept 1.25 or 1.5 modifiers. His GH60 design allows this I think.

No i mean the left shift. Universal ISO accommodates the normal left shift as opposed to a 1.25 one, so that you'll have the big enter but with the normal left shift :)

You raised a good idea.
I will try to accomodate 1.25x + 1x left shift too.
(That will be 2.25x or 1.25x+1x if there's no problem. ;))
Even though I have made/assembled/tuned HUNDREDs of keyboards for others, I myself don't have a full-tuned Custom Keyboard now.
So Ironical!

Yes! Well we officially hit 5 orders.

When is everyone okay with paying?

I think the best thing to do is for me to collect your emails for GON and have him invoice you.
Or you can give him your email, as long as he gets them all.

Well we should all finalize and agree on a layout.

Do you want to support a full bottom row? or do you want no keys on bottom corners.

Are you sure? I want us all to be happy.

And I would feel bad if I didn't bring this up. komar said the led module will be at least 5mm from the bottom of the pcb, which means that this case wont support led module.
Because of this, I am curious if the middle layer could be made out of a different material.
I'm also open to any ideas.

Busy and traveling for the next week and throughout times in September; i am still very interested in this in HHKB form in grey, regardless of being able to light up the whole board. If this is a go and i don't answer just PM me and my tapatalk will ding.

If this is a go i also want GON to add a Kitty Pad PCB to my order. For the first time ever i made a soldering boo boo and fried the ability to light up the LEDs on this beautiful GON creation, i got it mostly working and then i managed to f it all up, whatever /longstory; just be nice to add that on to my GON order should this become live.

Wow! Good luck with this! Unfortunately I'm already too invested in a more traditional case setup with WFD's plate incorporated in the GH60 GB.

If this has a Round 2 when GH60 Round 2 eventually happens, I'll be all over this! :P

How is split backspace going to work for this, if at all? Like cody it would be a big bonus for me on a HHKB layout but not essential.

i dont think you need a split backspace for this layout; unlike the HHKB in which it works well because backspace is where \| is on a traditional ANSI layout

i like the 1x,1.5x,7x,1.5x,1x layout from the HHKB though

this is what i am hoping for and I AM STILL INTERESTED IN THIS CODY!

Anyways, if you want the split backspace I think the GON top/plate would have the universal backspace option for single or split

I was interested in the split backspace so that I could have a Backspace and Delete key next to each other at the top there. I would post my layout but I think everyone is sick of seeing it by now.

i hope everyone is able to pay, if i am understanding correctly we can only have one person drop out......please clarify about extra fees, i already paid invoice.

Too bad the GH60 pcb group buy looks like its going to run at least another 2 months :(

As you know paypal charges transaction fee of 3.9%.
And I have to pay extra 2.5% when I withdraw the balance. So I added about 5% fee. But didn't noted this but included in the price.
So $155 became $163. And this is not applied this time first but has already been applied for a more than a month.

Pricing is the same as in my website www.GONsKeyboardWorks.com

Thanks,
GON

P.S. I think you guys could receive GON NS GH60 ISO ahead of its PCB....
Even though I have made/assembled/tuned HUNDREDs of keyboards for others, I myself don't have a full-tuned Custom Keyboard now.

Thank you :)

So this will definitely have blanks where the CTRL key normally is? The hole will not be cut, just smooth case like the HHKB?

What is the difference between hard and soft anodising?

How much will shipping to the UK be?

Sorry for all the questions!

Correct, there will be no "ctrl" keys, its true hhkb style!

His website also has a lot of colors that have not been posted on here much if you browse all his products.

Hard anodizing is preferred by some because it protects the aluminum from scratches a lot better. He can only hard anodize in gray i think, and its more expensive.
Regular anodizing is usually fine, less protective but comes in more colors. I haven't scratched any of my keyboards (lz-gh, gon kittypad, gon 38gt), and I move them around/travel a bit.

No idea about shipping...

I think the third one is black. Here you find some pics of dark-grey:

Shipping to DE is USD 30, so guess UK will be more or less same.

Don't worry Gold this is going on. ;)
I have already ordered a sample CNC Machining. ;)

And Checked actual fit with Original PokerX PCB.
So this GON NS GH60 Housing will surely fit GH60 PCB only if it has the same physical dimension as Original PokerX PCBs. ;)

Any update?

I shipped gon my lz-gh and gh60 and it was returned to me by usps a while ago. My box was 1" too big for what I paid, it never left the US.
I also initially lagged a couple weeks on getting it sent out in the first place, I'm sorry guys! Now the holidays are over I feel its much safer to ship this package.

He will be using the gh60 to verify the ISO layout design.

edit:  I will ship it TODAY!

Guys,

I have a problem and have a suggestion.

I think GH60 PCB does not have exactly the same dimension as PokerX, so I'm worried whether my GON NS GH60 Housing would fit GH60 PCB or not...

So.... what about including "PCB" for this GB?

I've almost developed NerD(New Emergence of Revolutionary Device, NerD) Controller.
I've finished Hardware design for TKL PCB and working on its firmware and GUI.

If you guys want to buy a PCB fitting this Housing together, I will include it for $30.
(I will solder the controller parts and flash its firmware)

I'm sure this PCB is the most Powerful now in the world.

The specification is as follows

USB Full NKRO & 6KRO Support(Toggle)
1000Hz(1ms) Polling Rate
Supports In-Switch Backlight Full LED and Side LED(The PCB has dedicated places for Side LEDs)
Editable Key Maps(Client Software is under development, to be released in a few months.)
Hardware MACRO(Realtime Macro without Software / Macro Recording with Dedicated Software(Software to be released in a few months, Realtime Macro recording is now available.)
Supports almost all Keylayouts including ISO!!!
Multimedia Keys Supported(Mostly for Windows as for now)

Controller SMD Parts Soldered and Firmware Flashed before shipping
1.6T PCB based on NerD Controller
MACRO: User can adjust each delay between key inputs.(User needs a Software to be released in a few months.
One Macro can include 1~2000 Key Inputs. User can save 2000 inputs at "one" key, or smaller chunks of inputs at up to  "70" keys.
(User can save 1 ~ 70 Macros)
Easy GUI Software Support(to be released in a few months)

Retail price of this PCB will be more than $50 later.
GB participants for this Housing only will be given this advantage($20 off).

If I design a 60% PCB, it will take about 1 month and I can ship the Housing+PCB in April.

Please think it over.... and tell me.

P.S. You can see TKL version of NerD at http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/pcbs/60-nerd.html

Did you actually tried to fit in the PCB or are you just worried it might not fit (aka not tested yet)?

Did you actually tried to fit in the PCB or are you just worried it might not fit (aka not tested yet)?

I got GH60 rev.A PCB from Cody, and tried to fit my Housing.
But it didn't fit. USB connector of GH60 rev.A was located too much inside.

I heard the final rev of GH60 has been corrected with this matter.
But I don't want to take risk, not only for me, but also for you guys who trusted me and ordered me Housings.
If we are all in the same country, shipping cost doesn't matter. So I can recall if the Housing and GH60 PCB don't match. But as you well know, we all live in different countries and shipping does matter.

That is why I suggested replacing PCB.

And I do sure NerD60 PCB is the best for NS 60 Housing.
I give you members $20 off, for two reasons.

1. I want to get rid of risk.
2. Members should wait 1~2 months until Windows GUI to be released.(LED control or Simple Macro Function has no problem now. But Key remapping needs GUI.)
Even though I have made/assembled/tuned HUNDREDs of keyboards for others, I myself don't have a full-tuned Custom Keyboard now.

the best way to look at it is this

the gh60 pcb will almost certainly fit, however for an extra $30 dollars you can have another nice pcb that will fit no matter what and have full support for the layout

Its also worth noting the gh60 will need an extra module for led support, and that probably wont fit in this case.
His pcb will also have pads for side/smds leds to light up the polycarb middle in the case.

I think this is the best option for everyone honestly. I'll also assemble any boards in this gb for free.

You can join now. But there's a bit of difference. ;)

1. The Housing NerD 60 will be the same as other GBers, $163.
(If you want anodized color bolts for the housing, $16 will be added.)
2. NerD 60 PCB will be allowed for $50 not for $30 as other GBers. I gave the other GBers $20 off because I changed the condition after the GB had been closed, but for a new joiners this discount will not be applicable.

So Pricing will be 1+2+shipping. ;)

Let me know if you want to be in.
Even though I have made/assembled/tuned HUNDREDs of keyboards for others, I myself don't have a full-tuned Custom Keyboard now.

Apologies Gon I just had a look at the housing and it's beautiful work, I was just looking for something more traditional like in the mockup. Your pcb sounds fantastic and as soon as the software is out I'm picking one of these out for my build. Will they be available on your website?

Hi Guys,

Here I got the final version of GON NS NerD 60_ISO today.

59022-0

I think this housing will not fit a GH60 PCB because this housing fits PokerX(Not PokerX_II).
PokerX1 and 2 have slightly different USB connector position. And NerD60 has the same USB Connector position as PokerX_1.

You can assemble almost all kinds of layouts with this housing&PCB set, only if bottom left and bottom right keys(2 keys) are blocked.

One of the differences from (PokerX_2 and GH60) is, ESC and 1 keys have the same direction as all the other(except for ISO enter switch) switches. So, when you apply Full Backlit LEDs to this kbd, LEDs at the 1st row will make exact harmony. ;)

As I told you, you can easily tune both In-switch backlight LEDs and Side LEDs at the same time, for each kind of LEDs has their own dedicated position to be soldered on.

If there is no issue on this final version, I will proceed mass(?) production.

Thanks,
GON

Guys~

Your NerD 60% Happy Housings will come next week from CNC Machining Company.
I will check their quality and send them for blaster and anodizing.

I think I can finish this in 2 weeks.

So I will invoice you for your new PCBs. ;)

Hi guys,

I have invoiced you for NerD 60 PCBs fitting "NS NerD 60 Happy for GH"
(It was GH60 at the beginning... but it doesn't fit GH60. So... I think it would be better to change its name. lol~)

Plz check your paypal and make payment.

And the value of the shipment(US and some countries require the sender to declare the value of the shipment) will be about $40. ;)

Thanks,
GON

NerD 60 Happy is not directly recognizable in the picture because they are already packed in shock absorb-er. ;)

Guys~ If you need proper SMD LEDs and Resistors or etc, you can order them at my site.
http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/others/14-ledssmd-50-pcs.html

The site will automatically calculate and impose shipping on you. But don't worry I don't think it will cost more shipping just because a few LEDs and resistors or small stuffs. I will give you a refund for extra shipping.

Thanks,

well if he mass produces these again this ended up being ANSI OR ISO (See bunnylake's photo) the plate layout allows both though i think GON pre-programmed in ISO on the provided Nerd60 i got, i forgot, eventually there should be a UI like the GH60

This thread should probably be moved into GON's subform. (Its more like a small sale and so he can edit my posts.)

I just sent you a PM. I definitely don't want to miss this again. A few posts earlier it was mentioned that he pre-programs the ISO layout since the GUI isn't finished yet. Is it possible to have the ANSI layout preprogrammed instead? Also, does the PCB support through-hole LEDs on the switches?  I saw GON make reference to some SMD LEDs earlier, but I'm not sure if that is for internal case lighting or not.

I am sure GON will pre-program it for you, maybe for a small fee, if needed but there should be a way to program it soon, maybe even a UI, the ones from round 1 were ISO but the PCB supports a bunch of layouts, almost as many as the GH60

There is through hole LEDs ON the switches, so the actual backlighting is through hole BUT you have to solder in SMD Resistors to make them work

Additionally bottom leds, the ones that make the middle polycarb layer glow, those are SMD LEDs, and like the backlit LEDS they require their own SMD resistors as well.

Diodes are either SMD or through hole.

it is a lot of work, but its not impossible for newblies, SMD LEDS and Resistors you can easily do by running a flux pen across the solder points and pre-applying the solder to the PCB, then use tweezers to hold the resistors or diodes over the solder and use the other hand to run the soldering iron to heat the joint, its not a perfect method but it works even with my shaky hands and no complex soldering skills,

im actually thinking about taking a day off work just to build mine proper because i am too impatient to make mine over the course of several days.

---

Although i haven't built my ANSI/ISO HHKB GON NS Nerd60 (whoo what a name!) yet, i just wanted to say that GON is excellent to do business with and his english is fantastic; not sure if he uses a translator but he understands everything you're saying.

Thanks Cody and GON!

Oh and GON, please consider making a ergonomic board :D

it is a lot of work, but its not impossible for newblies, SMD LEDS and Resistors you can easily do by running a flux pen across the solder points and pre-applying the solder to the PCB, then use tweezers to hold the resistors or diodes over the solder and use the other hand to run the soldering iron to heat the joint, its not a perfect method but it works even with my shaky hands and no complex soldering skills,

im actually thinking about taking a day off work just to build mine proper because i am too impatient to make mine over the course of several days.

Thank Glod for giving a bunch of explanation on NerD 60 PCB and GON NS NerD Housing. ;)

I don't use any translator, because as you might know English and Korean have totally different syntactic structures, which imposes too much burden on automatic/computerized translation. Such a translator often distorts original meaning/intention.

My English is not perfect. I, sometimes, do make mistakes. ;)
If I had any chance to stay in an English speaking country for about a year or so, I would speak still better English. lol~
So... If I upset you with my clumsy English, it is not because I intend to do so but because I'm not a native English speaker.

I will consider making a Ergo layout board someday. But as for now, I have to concentrate on NerDy GUI. ;)
When the GUI is finished, I promise I will make various layouts. ;)
Even though I have made/assembled/tuned HUNDREDs of keyboards for others, I myself don't have a full-tuned Custom Keyboard now.
So Ironical!

You still type better English than what I attempt to do each day here on GH  8) .   Hence never feel bad about your use of English here when it compares favourably to many here already.

GON, your english is more than sufficient for anyone to understand. No need to ever apologize! This GB is so tempting, if I didn't already own your 38GT, I'd be all over this. But right now i'm at a dilemma lol.

I spoke with Cody through PM who has been very helpful.  He just informed me that GON has setup a page to buy this board on his website and provided me the links.  I just have a few more questions before I place the order.  I'm plan to have GON solder the case LEDs, diodes, and resistors (for the glow affect), but I can solder everything else myself.  For the switch LEDs, will I need to purchase through hole diodes and through hole resistors?  I already have LEDs, so I won't need those, but I'm not entirely sure about the resistors and diodes.  I see both through hole and SMD are available for purchase on GON's website, but I suspect that the SMD are specifically for the case LEDs.

You can solder DIP(I recommend DIP for NerDs) diodes on the NerD PCB.
But resistors should be SMDs -- 2012(MM) size.

Cheers,

Glad there is a lot more interest this time around.

I will update the OP with detailed instructions on how to order.
